Episode 68 - Emotions
WARNING: very unfiltered/emotional episode ahead. Skip to episode 69 for something less intense 🙏 From Albert: I know I said I wouldn't watch the launch trailer, but I was compelled to after information began to leak early.  Needless to say I am blown away.  I am speechless.  I am in a brand new realm of emotions.  It feels like A SPACE ODYSSEY, or ANNIHILATION, or INTERSTELLAR - my atoms have begun to rearrange in ways I never could have dreamed. I cannot put anything even remotely coherent into words.  I am overwhelmed, and I am sad, and I am happy, and I am overjoyed.   I can't summarise my existence right now. I don't  understand life anymore.  I feel disconnected and upset, and overwhelmed, so overwhelmed...but beneath it all I am very, very happy :) instagram.com/deathstrandingpodcast twitter.com/deathstrandpod facebook.com/deathstrandingpodcast reddit.com/u/deathstrandingpod patreon.com/deathstranding

Episode 67 - Silence
Albert records an unplanned and brief mini-sode to announce changes in his podcast-making tools and schedule, quietly reminisce about the path to this moment that began 3 years ago, and asks the audience how they will go about making their way through ‘The Silence’ - the last two-and-a-bit weeks left until release. Going dead silent on all media (media blackout)? Seeing the final trailer? Send voice mails to deathstrandingpodcast@gmail.com and I’ll feature them all on the next show.

DSP aims to showcase Kojima's work as an intricate and nuanced intersection of diverse subjects, from film to tv, philosophy, manga, science, history, technology, art, poetry and more, and explore the ways in which all of these have collectively served to make his games all the more universal, enduring, and quintessentially human. Both bodies of work - Kojima's own, and his seemingly infinite array of influences across all media - are worthy of their own separate ongoing discussions unto themselves - but when taken together, both are immeasurably enhanced as a result. DSP's ultimate goal is, likewise, to enhance the audience's appreciation and experience of Kojima's art and his influences, by revealing and delving into the connections (strands) that exist between them. Video Games (interactive art/entertainment/storytelling) are a legitimate launching pad for wider and deeper learning about ourselves, each other, and the world we live in. Of all the forms of media that exist, games are closest to real life - both games and life are inherently interactive experiences that require active participation and engagement for them to be what they are. When this unique and profound connection to the human condition is tapped into and leveraged properly, games truly have the potential to be the most enriching, moving, and immersive form of art ever. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 CONNECT deathstrandingpodcast@gmail.com Instagram.com/DeathStrandingPodcast Facebook.com/DeathStrandingPodcast Twitter.com/DeathStrandPod DeathStrandingPodcast.Tumblr.com Reddit.com/Kojima Discord Slack WATCH/LISTEN Spotify PodBean YouTube Apple Stitcher iHeartRadio (Pending) SUPPORT You can support the show and help it improve and grow - improving equipment, hiring help and booking cast and crew as guests on the show. 61 - A Peek Behind The Curtain (Feat. Ashler and Nav)
👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [2:00 skip intro] Dani, Nav and Ashler start predicting what we can expect from what's gonna be shown at the TGS event, where Death Stranding will have its own stage for the much anticipated gameplay presentation. Also, the true meaning of connection: Bridges seem to want every city to connect with their chiral network, but is that really the right way to go when reconnecting the world? Wouldn't a true connection involve the possibility to accept the will of some cities to remain independent? Accepting other ideas and point of views could be a way to forge a different (and even stronger) connection. DSP aims to showcase Kojima's work as an intricate and nuanced intersection of diverse subjects, from philosophy, to manga, physics, art, poetry and more, and explore how these have served to make his games all the more universal, enduring, and quintessentially human. Both bodies of work - Kojima's own, and his seemingly infinite array of influences across all media - are worthy of their own separate ongoing discussions, unto themselves - but when taken together, they are immeasurably enhanced as a result. DSP's ultimate goal is to likewise enhance the audience's appreciation and experience of Kojima's art, by revealing and delving into the connections (strands) that exist between Kojima and both his own art and that of others. Video Games (interactive art and entertainment) are a legitimate launching pad for wider and deeper learning about ourselves, each other, and the world we live in. Of all forms of art, games are closest to real life - both are inherently interactive experiences that require your active participation and emotional engagement for them to be what they are. When this unique and profound connection to the human condition is tapped into and leveraged properly, games truly have the potential to be the most enriching, moving and immersive form of art ever. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 CONNECT deathstrandingpodcast@gmail.com Instagram.com/DeathStrandingPodcast Facebook.com/DeathStrandingPodcast Twitter.com/DeathStrandPod DeathStrandingPodcast.Tumblr.com Reddit.com/Kojima Discord Slack WATCH/LISTEN Spotify PodBean YouTube Apple Stitcher iHeartRadio (Pending) SUPPORT You can support the show and help it improve and grow - improving equipment, hiring help and scoring behind-the-scenes cast and crew interviews. I had to process a significant amount of emotional overwhelm as I recorded this, and also returning to recording after a while in general...this may sound a tad sappy, and feel free to liberally roll your eyes, but I'm just so grateful to have this space (IAV) to ground with you all, connect back with myself, and with each of you listening in, through this truly life-and-medium enriching material. It's very easy for me to feel alone in this endeavour, but hearing from you and seeing your engagement with this material, observing how closely you resonate it and the particular way in which this outlet treats it...it is beyond reassuring. Beyond kindred...I'm truly, sincerely grateful. This is my shot-by-shot, deliberate (slower paced, as is my MO) examination of this latest glimpse at the genre-defining masterwork-in-the-making, Death Stranding. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 Welcome to Death Stranding Podcast - your source for news, analysis and discussion centred on the upcoming title from Kojima Productions, as well as the game's incomparable and unique creator Hideo Kojima, and his many eclectic inspirations. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 CONNECT deathstrandingpodcast@gmail.com Instagram Twitter Facebook Tumblr Reddit Discord Slack WATCH/LISTEN Spotify PodBean YouTube Apple Stitcher iHeartRadio (Pending) SUPPORT You can support the show and help it improve and grow - improving equipment, hiring help and scoring behind-the-scenes cast and crew interviews. Hence why we all sound pretty dope on this episode, which will improve even further as we continue to refine our set-up & receive support from our legendary Patreon Saints - I love each and every one of you! If you like what you hear, head over to @justice4wardo on Twitter and/or Instagram to show him lots of love and appreciation - I don't think we could take another Eduardo-bandonment! hehe. Everyone...it's nose-to-the-grindstone time over at Kojima Productions. Silent, dutiful, productive hours are wiling away, whittling this genre-creating masterpiece into shape. And! They have a giant whiteboard/calendar of some kind in the studio, counting down the 80 days that are left until E3, 2018 (well, maybe they do, if that's their style). We have zero expectations or entitlement for anything being shown of course, but based on Kojima's teases about a huge reveal in 2018, we've decided to cautiously peek our heads out of the cave of conservativeness and gaze upon the fertile, vibrant fields of HYPE. Join us as we break down the FINAL minute of the third trailer in the Season Finale of Threading The Strands, cover what news there is, and dive into all things speculative and predictive. Congratulations, Master Del Toro and your phenomenal team! Original episode description follows...It looms up ahead, this vast titan, it's visage incomprehensible, severed hands stranding deadly, snaring chords out for prey...possessing and consuming the earth. Emily O'Brien & Troy Baker confirmed for Death Stranding! We recorded this just before the announcement was made, but our speculation on what the DICE Awards might reveal is still relevant as of time of publishing. We shall dive into our thoughts on our two brand new cast members on the next episode! Original episode description follows...who is the child? Is it human? Is it Norman? Is it Mads?...Is it us? and who are the grasping dead ones, who encircle and drag their victims to another realm...are they corrupted souls? The restless undead? Are they the jackals to the Palm-Monsters' wolves, to the Hand-head Colossus' lion...to the Gestalt Feeder's great white shark? These are the questions swirling around every Kojima and Death Stranding analyst's mind and soul right now, and a million more...but that is why we relish this material as much as we do! And even when (or if) we do get answers, it's almost certain to open a whole host of new questions. DSP aims to showcase Kojima's works as an intricate and nuanced intersection of diverse subjects, from philosophy, to manga, physics, art, poetry and more, and how these have served to make his games all the more universal, enduring, and quintessentially human. Both bodies of work - Kojima's own, as well as his seemingly infinite array of influences across all forms of media - are worthy of their own separate ongoing discussions unto themselves - but when taken together, both are immeasurably enhanced as a result. 16 - The Unseen And The Golden Mask
This episode was originally published on Feb 13, 2018. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [2:00 skip intro] "A Curse Descends Upon Those Who Disturb The Burial..." Could the floating hooded man be a higher level 'fellow Sam', proudly flaunting their upgraded equipment and, well, ability to fly? And why do The Unseen, the incorporeal (though not entirely invisible) creatures, take a humanoid shape? Does this suggest an earthly origin, and possibly imply a BRIDGES experiment on human beings gone wrong? These and many more angles are explored in this, Death Stranding Podcast’s 16th episode, and the 4th instalment of our ongoing eight-part sub-series, Threading The Strands, breaking down Death Stranding’s trailers minute-by-minute, episode-by-episode. We are joined once again by Mitchell, whose notes add greatly to a multifaceted, wide-ranging discussion on not only this minute, but the premise of Death Stranding overall. Our wonderful Reddit community is the star of this episode, particularly CrazyMangaFan, whose Junji Ito piece proves particularly fascinating, leading to even further and richer veins of discussion. In addition, we answer the age old question of which is better: Super Soakers, or Nerf Gun? Plus we attempt to memorise GunGuy and DriverGuy’s real names, Patrick and Kyle…or was it the other way round? Ah, we’ll get there! 15 - Don't Even Breathe
This episode was originally published on Feb 2, 2018. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [2:00 skip intro] "Sam!" It all began as this particular tale of humanity always begins...a feeling of betrayal, the curse-gift of irrepressible curiosity...and an unquenchable yearning for the absolute, unfiltered truth. Could we have a clear point of origin for BRIDGES? A Death Stranding App? And, could the Water Purgatory be our shared, smartphone-portable, always-social space? On this, the fifteenth episode of Death Stranding Podcast, Albert is joined by Daniele, Dean, and our newest guest, Mitchell, to break down the third minute of the third trailer of Death Stranding. Needless to say, much in the way of tantalising possible glimpses into the potential central narrative of the game bubbles to the surface, and, like the grasping hands of the Unseen Underlings, we are dragged along into another world of predictions, analysis and general discussion - nearly 3 hours of it in fact. Prepare yourself for a thorough examination of everything this minute contains, and catalyses deeper consideration of/speculation upon...like, for instance, the fact that Mads, in all likelihood, was at the core of the Fourth Explosion, having beckoned and surrendered to the Inter-dimensional Interlopers himself? Also after losing two hosts one after another, Mitchell and Albert hold the fort with even-deeper-deep dives and partially-sort-of-ok Bane impressions... This episode was originally published on Jan 24, 2018. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [2:18 skip intro][3:16 skip regular rundown][4:46 our week in DS/RobinGaming][11:17 Shape of water / intro to thalassophobia & rotifer][26:50 structure of the show][28:55 Winding Refn][31:55 MGS Survive][40:50 reddit rundown][1:17:59 no women in game / motherhood][1:26:35 hourglass “theory”][1:31:59 thalassophobia/fear of ocean & fear in general][1:47:50 Humans pushing the boundaries of what is known/opposing their natural habitat][2:04:37 Norman Reedus Podcast/part about DS][2:07:15 turning Norman into Sam][2:11:16 DS will not be isolating experience][2:22:21 outro][2:25:40 bloopers] "The Depths Below." Could BRIDGES have gone 'a bridge too far? On this episode we delve into Thalassophobia, the fear of the ocean, abyssal depths, and the unknown, as well as the themes of Water, Woman and Womb. We extrapolate this to Death Stranding's premise and visuals, and discuss, for instance, how natural forces tend to push the ever-curious human spirit back, at least initially: the waves of the ocean continuously force us away from the deep places of the world (forbidden knowledge), and gravity's entire purpose is to keep us away from the stars, away from the unknown. After persisting through this rejection from nature, telling us to keep within our ken, at one point, both with the ocean and outer space, the resistance 'gives way', and we find ourselves in a space of both discovery and vulnerability...the promise of enlightenment wrapped in untold, otherworldly dangers. We also discuss Norman's recent interview, and his account of what it's like to work with Kojima. He elaborates on his and Kojima's process, and provides tantalising glimpses on how iconoclastic Death Stranding's mechanics of connection (in a time of increased physical disconnection, despite social media 'connection') will be. Examining Kojima's last title to make deductions and speculations regarding his next one is made additionally worthwhile for the cathartic effect that giving voice to both MGSV's strengths and shortcomings certainly brings. In other news, Daniele's computer has gone to the big computer parts bargain store in the sky (Vaio, in memoriam 2011-2017), Alin is haunted by occasionally strange and hilarious audio assailants, including rustling paper, thudding sounds, and frankly terrifying ring tones. We discuss the article, as well as IAV's plans for Death Stranding Podcast coverage and content in the forthcoming months. 9 - Once, There Was An Explosion
This episode was originally published on Dec 13, 2017. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [Skip Intro 2:00] "Speculation Becomes Reality." Once again, *just* as we finished recording, a new collection of Death Stranding reveals dropped in the form of IGN's 'Mechanics and Lore' interview with Kojima! We'll dive into all of that *actually tangible* information regarding the game - directly from the creator himself, by the by - on the following week's show. The gifts just keep on falling, like so much Timefall rain, don't they? Original episode description follows...With the release of the sublimely crafted, speechlessness-inducing and thoroughly astounding third trailer for Death Stranding, the evolution of our understanding towards story, world, lore and themes has taken an *explosive* leap forward. On our longest episode yet, each host expresses their first interpretations of the new trailer, along with a segment dedicated to the possibly intentional (and if not, then nevertheless fascinating and intriguing) parallels and allusions of the name Sam (featuring Ray, my partner, her focus being interpreting human behaviour through her coaching work) with the work of Samuel Beckett and others. Our uncontainable joy, excitement and appreciation for what has been revealed drips like death-realm oil over every minute of this one. This will be the the first of many, many episodes dedicated to absorbing, processing, analysing, breaking down, speculating upon and discussing not only the third trailer, but the ways in which it retroactively adds new dimensions (and possible angles of interpretation) to previously released information and material on Death Stranding. Ohhh Yeah... Immediately after we finished recording this episode, Norman Reedus was announced to be attending The Game Awards, as was predicted on the show! Talk about surreal. Anyway, on with the original episode description...We are DAYS away from a potential Death Stranding reveal, and Albert, Steve and Luis leapt at the chance to discuss/speculate/analyse their Kojima/Del Toro-loving hearts out faster than you can say "Schwarzschild Radius". Much is discussed and said, and our three intrepid hosts even have an impromptu category-by-category predictions session at the end of the episode. When this unique and profound connection to the human condition is tapped into and leveraged properly, games truly have the potential to be the most enriching, moving and immersive form of art ever. 6 - The Game Awards 2017
This episode was originally published on Nov 20, 2017. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [Skip Intro 2:00] "What Are You Up To, Keighley?" With Geoff Keighley twitter teasing (tweasing?) a Death Stranding appearance at TGA, we dive into our thoughts on the possibility, followed by reading your comments from Reddit and addressing our main topic (How Mads and Norman will play off each other in Death Stranding). We discuss how their respective styles will compliment one another, and what we'd each like to see from them in terms of acting range that we haven't seen from them before. There's also an IAV Podcast tease, and it turns out that Albert is what shall now be known as 'a good Podcast mother' (making sure my fellow hosts are looked after, fed and well)...go figure! 5 - Del Toro's Tease (Feat. The Game Professor)
This episode was originally published on Nov 13, 2017. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [Skip Intro 2:00] "Games As An Educational Experience." On episode five, we welcome Sam (a.k.a. The Game Professor) from Games As Lit to the show. We discuss how Del Toro has officially teased us with a potential TGA/PSX reveal, and we also cover the wider subject of 'the worthwhileness of games' - how they can be far, far more than mere sources of distraction, recreation or competition. Hint: we kinda/sorta think they could actually be the next evolutionary step in human artistic/creative expression...so there's that. Plus, Steve tries to stealthily eat a burrito during recording, or so we suspect... This episode was originally published on Oct 21, 2017. 👍🌈🦀🐟🐋🐬☔️👶💀 [Skip Intro 2:12] "We Are The Ones Who Play." On this week's episode, we have our first six-person panel. Reddit.com/r/DeathStranding redditors Albert, Steve, Ed, Josh, Luis and Dan discuss Kojima's Blade Runner 2049 RollingStone article, what we'd all like to see carried over (and left behind) from The Phantom Pain for inclusion in Death Stranding, as well as speculate on what other games might have an influence on it. As usual we also touch on some of Kojima's (many) influences/likings/kindred artists' work. Tim & Eric, Eric Andre and Breath of the Wild get slightly incongruous shout-outs as well.
