KoC 7 - Kubernetes (Part 3) What does it actually take to run Kubernetes

Are you sure you want to run your own Kubernetes? Kubernetes is the current container orchestration front-runner, but even its fans admit... it's complicated. Robert and Lew discuss their experience with the platform, some options to offload the work of running it to cloud providers, and some tips on making Kubernetes less of a burden to your developers. ============================== References (not Recommendations) ============================== Kubernetes: https://kubernetes.io/ Docker: https://www.docker.com/ Sevice Mesh : Check out Kumulus on Cloud Episode 3: https://youtu.be/1qBGiCitT8I?t=10 Heroku: https://www.heroku.com/ OpenShift: https://www.redhat.com/en/technologies/cloud-computing/openshift =========================== Subscribe and Listen to the Kumulus on Cloud Podcast HERE: 🔈 =========================== Podcast: ➡︎ YouTube: https://youtube.com/@kumuluspodcast ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us/podcast ➡︎RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/cdbb0314/podcast/rss ============================== Connect With Us 👋 ============================== Kumulus: ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us ➡︎ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@KumulusTechnologies ➡︎Twitter: @kumulustech Lew Tucker: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/lewtucker ➡︎Twitter: @lewtucker Robert Starmer: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rstarmer ➡︎Twitter: @rstarmer ➡︎ Mastadon: @rstarmer@hackyderm.io

KoC 6 - What makes Kubernetes the container manager for Cloud

KoC 6 - What makes Kubernetes the container manager for Cloud

Kubernetes very quickly became the container manager of choice after its release in 2014 and has retained its popularity since. By abstracting away much of the operational complexity of running anywhere from 2 to 2000 (and more) containers, it simplifies running containers at scale. It can monitor a 'fleet' of containers, restart failed ones, and scale groups of containers up or down according to application needs. In addition, Kubernetes also has API-enabled controllers to manage versions and deployments. This provides an extra layer of automation, making deploying individual, containerized applications much easier for developers. Robert and Lew discuss some of the key features that make Kubernetes such a powerful and popular application manager (simple app scaling and updates, self-healing capabilities, and more) and also point out a few areas that still need improvement (and caution). (Hint: persistent storage). ============================== References (not Recommendations) ============================== Kubernetes: https://kubernetes.io/ Docker: https://www.docker.com/ Docker “Swarm Mode” https://docs.docker.com/engine/swarm/ =========================== Subscribe and Listen to the Kumulus on Cloud Podcast HERE:📱 =========================== Podcast: ➡︎ YouTube: https://youtube.com/@kumuluspodcast ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us/podcast ➡︎RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/cdbb0314/podcast/rss ============================== Connect With Us 👋 ============================== Kumulus: ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us ➡︎ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@KumulusTechnologies ➡︎Twitter: @kumulustech Lew Tucker: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/lewtucker ➡︎Twitter: @lewtucker Robert Starmer: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rstarmer ➡︎Twitter: @rstarmer ➡︎ Mastadon: @rstarmer@hackyderm.io

KOC - 5 - part 1 - What is Kubernetes

KOC - 5 - part 1 - What is Kubernetes

You can learn how we got to containers as the default way to run applications efficiently and how Kubernetes changed the container orchestration game. Robert and Lew talk about the fundamentals of container function and how they simplify the process of breaking up large monolithic applications into smaller, more manageable pieces called microservices. This approach allows for easier maintenance, improved security, and greater resiliency. Containers allow for better segregation and isolation of these microservices, reducing the impact of any failures. Further, microservices can be built by different development teams, and each can have its environment and resources. Docker revolutionized how people thought about containers, making it easier to package the necessary libraries and tools to build containers and greatly simplified container deployment. Even as containers were becoming more popular, a piece needed to be added. Tools like Amazon's EC2 and VMware's virtual machines formalized the process of running virtual machines, and something similar was needed to manage the lifecycle of containers. To date, Kubernetes was the orchestration system that quickly took the lead. It can monitor a 'fleet' of containers, restart failed ones, and scale groups of containers up or down according to application needs. In addition, Kubernetes also has API-enabled controllers to manage versions and deployments. This provides an extra layer of automation, making deploying individual, containerized applications easier for developers. Join Robert and Lew for part 2 of 3 where they dive deeper into the value of Kubernetes for developers and operators. ============================== References (not Recommendations) ============================== Kubernetes: https://kubernetes.io/ Docker: https://www.docker.com/ Solaris Containers: https://www.oracle.com/solaris/technologies/solaris-containers.html LXC Containers: https://linuxcontainers.org/ =========================== Subscribe and Listen to the Kumulus on Cloud Podcast HERE:📱 =========================== Podcast: ➡︎ YouTube: https://youtube.com/@kumuluspodcast ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us/podcast ➡︎RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/cdbb0314/podcast/rss ============================== Connect With Us 👋 ============================== Kumulus: ➡︎ Web: https://kumul.us ➡︎ Youtube: https://youtube.com/@KumulusTechnologies ➡︎Twitter: @kumulustech Lew Tucker: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/lewtucker ➡︎Twitter: @lewtucker Robert Starmer: ➡︎LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rstarmer ➡︎Twitter: @rstarmer ➡︎ Mastadon: @rstarmer@hackyderm.io

KoC 4 - Infrastructure-as-Code - Time to Say Goodbye to Your IT Department?

KoC 4 - Infrastructure-as-Code - Time to Say Goodbye to Your IT Department?

Infrastructure-as-code (IAC) has changed how IT departments manage both hardware and software-defined infrastructure. Does the codification of infrastructure in the cloud (AND data center!!) mean that IT operations teams are no longer needed? Special guest Michael Damkot joins our co-hosts Robert Starmer and Lew Tucker to break down what IAC is, where the value really lies, and whether traditional IT departments should fear its adoption.

KoC 2 - Zero Trust - Cybersecurity in the Cloud - with Robert Starmer and Lew Tucker

KoC 2 - Zero Trust - Cybersecurity in the Cloud - with Robert Starmer and Lew Tucker

Traditional Network-based security models that aim to achieve a security perimeter - think VPCs and Firewalls - just don't cut it anymore when it comes to digital security.

Whether you have resources in the cloud or not, how do you secure operations to connect to partners and grant access to your employees and contractors in a manageable way? How can you ensure that security becomes a process that all of your employees can make a fundamental way of life rather than something that is bolted on? By taking security down to the application level, the zero-trust model ensures that each transaction comes from a trusted source. Is it the way forward? Let's find out!

KoC 1 - Was Moving to the Cloud a Mistake?

Lew and Robert jump into the topic of the year (apparently), Is Cloud Worth the Cost?  We discuss what the news is saying, and delve into the why and the reality of what Cloud really costs, and how that compares to how a self run Datacenter may "appear" cheaper, but is that the reality?

Is Cloud Computing just "Water Vapor?"
