Episode 2: Dr. John Hernandez talks about his journey to becoming president of Irvine Valley College and pledging LUL as a PhD students at 38 years old

Hermano Dr. John Hernandez is the new president of Irvine Valley College in California which leads all Orange County community colleges in transfers to UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Davis and UC Riverside. 

He previously served as president of Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California.  He is a first-generation Cuban immigrant and pledged the Alpha Line at the Gamma Epsilon Graduate Chapter in Washington, D.C. at 38 years old when he was a PhD student at The University of Maryland College Park.   

In this episode Hermano Dr. John Hernandez discusses his journey in becoming president of Irvine Valley College and why he decided to pledge La Unidad Latina at 38 years old as a graduate student.

In this episode, Founding Father Hermano Henry Villareal talks about how he went from being kicked out from Arizona State University as an undergraduate, to then having to go back to community college, and eventually making his way to Cornell University as the first Latinx Administrator. 

Henry then goes onto talk about being shamed for speaking Spanish in elementary school, and finally coming out to his hermanos 35 years later at the 35th Year Anniversary Gala held in New York. 

Hermano Henry was one of two administrators who helped establish La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., at Cornell University.   

He is a retired dean of students and currently lives with his husband in Northern California.
