Doctors, Assassins, and Other Tyrants - Book launch with Katy Campbell

Katy's newest book is now launched! 'Doctor's, Assassins, and Other Tyrants' is a fun adventurous return to the world of Para Sympan, crafted by a fulltime mom, writer, and LegendFiction mentor. Find out why Katy dived into Arthurian legends, interviewed guys to learn to think more like one, creating strong characters without stereotyping, themes of relatability, and found her own way to handle teen trauma with slatherings of humor. Get inspired to write your own novel by hearing how Katy enjoys her adventures!

Meet Katy: https://youtu.be/YUnpp1fieVU Website: https://katysfables.com/ DOCTORS, ASSASSINS, & OTHER TYRANTS In this sequel to Love, Treachery, and Other Terrors, seventeen-year-old Augustine has a near-perfect life. Until he’s kidnapped by a band of highwaymen. As if tying him up and dragging him away from home wasn’t bad enough, the ruffians start spouting nonsense about how he is the illegitimate son of some horrible, honorless, murdering prince named Justin. Augustine, of course, doesn’t believe these vile rumors. By his mother’s own account, her late husband was the perfect man in every imaginable way. She would never lie to him about something as important as his father… right? In this quirky, medieval fantasy Augustine must find a way to escape his captors and uncover who he really is. It’s a story of providence, heroism, and learning to embrace the truth.

The Good Death of Kate Montclair with Daniel McInerny | LegendFiction

The Good Death of Kate Montclair with Daniel McInerny | LegendFiction

Daniel McInerney is an author of fiction for adults and children, an associate professor of philosophy at Christendom College, and the author of 'The Good Death of Kate Montclair.' His fantasy series for children is called the 'Kingdom of Patria,' and it follows the story of refugees from the Trojan War who land in the new world 3000 years ago and are kept a secret by the US government. Our conversation starts with Patria, a hidden kingdom in Northern Indiana that was discovered by Thomas Jefferson, and a series that follows an 11 year old boy named Oliver Stu as he discovers the kingdom and the hijinks that ensue.

We chat about Daniel's latest novel, 'The Good Death of Kate Montclair.' The book is about a woman, Kate, in late middle age who is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and sees the next 14 months of suffering as an intolerable prospect. The book is inspired by 'Brideshead Revisited,' and about a group of people dealing with death and the question of belief. It also delves into the personal and moral struggle around euthanasia.

Daniel believes faith-inspired fiction is the master category of storytelling and how he is proud to be one of the authors at Chrism Press, a publisher dedicated to better Christian fiction.

ABOUT DANIEL MCINERNY

Daniel McInerny is a native of South Bend, Indiana; a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (BA English) and The Catholic University of America (MA and PhD Philosophy); and an associate professor of philosophy at Christendom College, where he teaches courses on the Philosophy of Art and Beauty and Ethics and Imagination, among other topics. Daniel is a fiction author, dramatist, and screenwriter. His humorous Kingdom of Patria series for middle grade readers can be found on Amazon. Daniel and his wife Amy have three adult children and one preternaturally adorable grandchild, and they live in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Imagination & Reality: The Wardrobe we use to see and understand creation | LegendFiction Show

Imagination & Reality: The Wardrobe we use to see and understand creation | LegendFiction Show

Nate Hile and Shari Suter from Grail Country join Dominic to chat about imagination as a 'truth-bearing faculty.' Not the fanciful kind of daydreaming, but deep imagination, imagination that reveals truth about reality to us. We touch on George MacDonald who speaks of imagination as divine, a power of synthesis and revealing. Coleridge distinguishes between primary and secondary imagination. We discuss how dogmatism represses the imagination. It is vital to encourage imagination, but to also "teach children to dream nobler dreams." Imagination is more than mental muddling. It is the way that we see and understand the world. Imagination is made up of stories or 'wardrobes' that we use to make sense of reality. These wardrobes come in many forms, including literature, film, or even music. These wardrobes can be used to uncover new ways of perceiving and interpreting the world. We touch on several examples like C.S. Lewis' 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,' and J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings.'

Handling teen rebellion in stories (and real life?)

Handling teen rebellion in stories (and real life?)

Katy, Joe, and Dominic tackle the popular trope of 'The Teen is Always Right' in fiction, real life, specifically the "junior knows best" trope where a teenager disobeys their parents because they feel held back. They analyze how this trope is portrayed in media and how it can be done well or poorly. We bring up movies like Guillermo del Toro's version of Pinocchio, 'How to Train Your Own Dragon,' 'Totoro,' 'The Nutcracker and the 4 Realms,' and 'Tangled' to explore these ideas of teen rebellion vs dark authority. - 📚 We discuss the "junior knows best" trope where a teenager rebels against their parent's authority, which is a common theme in many stories. - 🎥 They analyze how this trope is portrayed in different movies, including the recent Pinocchio movie, and how it can be done well or poorly. - 👪 They also discuss their own experiences as parents dealing with teenage rebellion and appropriate ways to respond. The way we see it, there's a legitimate space where rebellion and disobedience has meaning in our stories, because it shows up where our character is immature, or where the system is too autocratic. Or both. We use stories, and our daily lives with our loved ones, as opportunities to self-reflect and grow in wisdom. ABOUT DOMINIC A young, Catholic dad and novelist passionate about worldbuilding and Catholicism. Dominic is graduated from the Writer’s Institute for Children’s Literature, self-published a children’s novel, and works full time as a marketer and graphic designer. He is married, with a small girl and a smaller corgi. When not reading or watching shows in his downtime, he's recording podcasts and procrastinating about writing stories. He is the founder of LegendFiction. Website ABOUT KATY Katy a humor writer and lover of fairy tales. She went on to study entertainment media at John Paul the Great University in San Diego. It was there she met her husband, a man who only dressed in flannel and had a cup of Starbucks coffee permanently affixed to his hand. She returned with him to his home state of Washington where she too, developed a taste for Starbucks (though not for flannel). Writing Children’s Stories with Tammy Fernando

Writing Children’s Stories with Tammy Fernando

Sometimes stories are unexpected, and storytelling appears in unusual times in life. This is Tammy’s tale, where she draws from her experiences as a nursery teacher, midwife, and nurse, to create a series of children’s books. Enjoy her lovely British accent, her love of Sinhalese cooking, and her adventures into creating, illustrating, and self-publishing children’s books.

MEET TAMMY
Sri Lankan born, Tammy Fernando is the debut author of ‘A Prayer from the Heart’: a Christian, fiction story for young children which helps them process their desires in the light of God. For a long time, Tammy has wanted to speak to children about God, to show them how loving He is and how He ultimately wants them to share in the never ending, Heavenly party. Though Tammy was trying hard to make this happen by offering schools ‘The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd’, God had other plans. Tammy’s career as a children’s author took her by surprise when, in 2015, the Lord nudged her to write! With insights from her experience as a nursery teacher, midwife, nurse and family story teller, Tammy wrote her first story about a child’s deepest desire.

Chris wants a forever-friend to play with. And his persevering prayers are eventually answered in his new friend, Shani. In her story, it’s easy to see that God overarches its entirety, as the Holy Trinity turns up in every illustration. With this unique offering, what Tammy wants to tell all children is this: “that with God, everything will be alright.”

Creating broken characters and stories of hope with Tasha Kazanjian

Creating broken characters and stories of hope with Tasha Kazanjian

Tasha has a fascination for realistic, gritty stories that push characters to discover their depths. It's a little surprising then she sees herself as Lucy in Narnia, open to wonder and creativity. But it is that openness that drives her fascination for broken characters truly open to reality, as beautiful and harsh as it is, and honoring authenticity in their adventuring.  Most importantly, stories should point to hope, however dark the world seems, as a way to show redemption and change.

ABOUT TASHA KAZANJIAN
Tasha writes fantasy, usually for either middle grade or adult markets. Currently, she's working on a couple of short stories for an indie publisher, and revising an adult fantasy novel featuring ice age dragons. She loves reading, usually old books, and watching either Studio Ghibli movies or 80s flicks (the more synth music, the better). And when not doing any of that (or working), she's probably baking.

Alien worlds, morals, and Markmakers with Mary Woods | LegendFiction

Alien worlds, morals, and Markmakers with Mary Woods | LegendFiction

Mary Jessica Woods was raised and homeschooled in the Chicago suburbs, where she read as many adventure stories as she could get her hands on. At the age of ten, she realized she was doomed to be a writer and has been following the muse ever since. Still seeking adventure, she headed out west to Wyoming Catholic College, where she climbed mountains, rappelled off cliffs, and studied the Great Books.

After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in the Liberal Arts, she returned to the Midwest to work as an editor. Mary also volunteers as an editorial assistant for the literary magazine Dappled Things, and her nonfiction has appeared in America Magazine, Catholic World Report, and First Things. In her mind, she spends most of her time on distant planets or alien spaceships, but she actually lives in rural Michigan. WEBSITE

ABOUT MARKMAKER: He swore to paint the truth. Now he is living a lie. For the Noxxiin people, tattoos define identity: they commemorate birth, ancestry, accomplishments—even crimes. As a tattoo artist living on an ancient generation ship, Mariikel Serix has sworn to record the truth. So when he becomes an unwilling accomplice in the banishment of an innocent man, he is horrified that he has broken his oath—and his eyes are opened to the misery of the Underbelly, the realm of the outcasts.
