Mimi Thi Nguyen (The Gift of Freedom)

Mimi Thi Nguyen (The Gift of Freedom)

Heavy hitter alert. This month I talked to artist, activist, scholar, illustrious zine maker, and my very old friend Mimi Thi Nguyen about coming to the US as a refugee as a child; getting into punk through Maximum Rocknroll; falling out of love with punk because of a bunch of shitty men involved with MRR; falling back in love with punk through Evolution of a Race Riot, a zine project she made in response; connecting the dots between her refugee experience and the legacies of US imperialism informing her work as a scholar; the statement she wrote about the massacre in Atlanta. Plus I talk a bunch of shit about pop punk and threaten to break a 50 year old's glasses. We didn't talk about the Legend of Billie Jean, and that's my fault, but you should read Mimi's old Punk Planet column about it.

Erin Yanke (It Did Happen Here)

Erin Yanke (It Did Happen Here)

Erin Yanke fuckin rules. I asked her on the show to talk about her incredible podcast, It Did Happen Here, but we also touched on her band Noxeema, the film she worked on, Arresting Power, growing up in Humbolt and the Bay, interning at NPR, and I somehow forgot to ask about the fucking DEAD MOON BOOK!!! This is why you gotta keep your notes in front of you when doing interviews and not wander around your house like a toddler. This is a good one so please listen, and remember to rate review subscribe whatever in all the places you can do that I need affirmation.

Elizabeth Whitney (Enliven Studios)

Elizabeth Whitney (Enliven Studios)

This month I talked to Elizabeth Whitney, my dear friend in New York who is an empowerment, sex, and wellness coach and the only person I've ever seen wear a Supreme fanny pack on her waist. Imagine the freedom! We talked about being born into a Christian cult, the Footloose soundtrack, her seemingly innate interest in fashion, getting into cigarettes and punk in the psyche ward at 14, her struggles with disordered eating, running away to live in the Bay at 16, finding community while living in a punk house for 20 years, getting over shyness through waitressing, how moving across the country can be alienating but shift your outlook, training to be a sex coach. There's too much to mention it all but it's an incredible conversation. There was another issue with the audio syncing incorrectly, so about halfway through it starts to sound like Elizabeth is interrupting me all the time, but she isn't! She's very considerate. It's just the internet fucking up.

Marissa Chavez (Official Bootleg)

Marissa Chavez (Official Bootleg)

Talked on the phone with my cool friend Marissa Chavez from Austin, TX, about her wild childhood, her outlaw family, dropping out of high school to sell weed, oogling around the American West trying to find the best heroin, getting sober, staying connected to the streets through photography , her handmade t-shirt label Official Bootleg, and so much more. Marissa is a magnetic personality and her kindness, generosity of spirit, and willingness to connect and share with others are center stage in this interview. The animals you hear in order of appearance: Marissa's cat Alice purring, my cat Growler screaming, my dog Rubi barking. There were some unexpected issues with the phone recording software, and so for a time at the beginning our conversation is slightly out of sync and it seems like we're talking over each other. I did my best to get rid of the worst of it, but try to bear with it, because it goes away eventually and this convo is too good to miss.

Nick Anglin (Black Young and Educated)

This month I talked with Nick Anglin of Black Young and Educated, about Civil Saturdays, BYE’s ongoing Saturday afternoon protest against PA Section 508 which gives police discretion to use lethal force when they “perceive danger,” organizing in this current moment, building sustainable movements, and where he sees BYE turning their attention once 508 is amended. Give these kids your money! They accept Cashapp or Venmo! Episode photo by Shane Berman.

Sue Johnson (Sue Johnson)

Sue Johnson (Sue Johnson)

WHAT’S UP this is episode 31 of Radio Harvester. A good number. On my 31st birthday I got my ear pierced at the Queens Center Mall. This month’s guest is queer filmmaker Sue Johnson, who I met at a screening of Off Course, a 15 year retrospective featuring 13 of her films spanning from 2003, when she’d first picked up a camera, to this year! We talked about growing up in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Eric’s Trip, working at Struts Gallery, witnessing the Women’s March as a Canadian, Kenneth Anger, Chicks on Speed, queer joy, queer pain, and so much more. Plus I whispered the intro bust and departing salutation crouched in my parents basement and they sound hella weird! Please give it a listen! Rate (5-star only), review (glowing, please), subscribe (there’s only one way to do this) on iTunes! I keep forgetting to ask people to do that but it’s important for analytics and I don’t quite know what analytics are but I know I need them!

WHATS GOOD this month I talked to Shani Banerjee, Pittsburgh wildass and singer of Empty Beings and Maenads, about growing up in Pittsburgh's Bengali community, hanging out at bars with her bluegrass dad, finding punk, escaping an abusive relationship, and so much more. This is a good one, Shani is cool, and I used the word autodidact incorrectly in the intro. Fuckin sue me. Guest appearance by Basti the dog. Here's the Maenads video we talked about.

She is such a delightful person and I'm so glad to know her and I can't wait for you to hear this conversation.

The Jamie we talk about throughout the episode is Jamie Ewing from Bent Outta Shape. As mentioned in the outro, here's something I wrote a year after Jamie died. It includes a link to download a zip file of most of their recordings if you wanna check that out. And if you like it, maybe buy some of the records. There's links for that as well.

And as promised in the intro, here's the info about my newsletter Life Harvester.

WHAT'S GOOD welcome back to Radio Harvester after we had to take June off cause I had LYME DISEASE (oy vey) !!! Very excited for this month's guest, Madeleine Campbell, who runs Accessible Recording and does the zine Women In Sound. We talked about growing up in The Triangle, the parallels between punk/hardcore and modern avant garde composers, getting into recording, doing zines, and THE LUNACHICKS (mostly talked about the Lunachicks, tbh). This interview rules and you should definitely listen.

Mark Cross (Mudd Guts)

Me and Mark sat down at his art gallery, Mudd Guts (http://muddguts.com), and talked about the suburbs being weird, getting into graffiti, getting into tattooing and opening his own shop (http://www.rosetattoonyc.com), sobriety in adulthood, anonymity at the level of press radio and film, being a "wretched flesh formation," and more. Please enjoy. I don't know why my outro sounds so bad but it's like the last two minutes of the damn thing, suck it up.

Megan March & Jon No (Street Eaters)

This month's interview is with John & Megan from Street Eaters! This is the first extended cut of an older, shorter podcast. I intended to put it out a few weeks earlier so it would be out while they were still on tour, supporting their new record The Envoy out soon on their label Nervous Intent Records but I fucked up and it's too late and they're home now. What are you gonna do! I think John and Megan are both really cool, smart people and I'm very happy to have spoken to them. Also this interview took place at Carmine's Original on Norman Ave in Greenpoint! What a place, one of my historic favorites. RIP. Also my email address is sliceharvester at gmail, in case you needed to know.

Faiza Kracheni (Bondage / Body Pressure)

This month's guest Faiza Krachenisinger of Bondage and Body Pressure, coordinator at Austin School of Film, all around cool & stylish gal about towntalks about getting into hardcore as a delinquent teen in Austin, TX; being a brown woman in punk; the grim reality of punk/hardcore message board culture; dudes trying to shame you for wanting to look fly on tour; etc. Plus I earnestly apologize for two different things in the intro and disingenuously apologize for one thing at the end.

Ted Leo (Ted Leo)

This month I sit down with Ted Leo and we talked about his punk roots in Jersey, why going to college is stupid, how to dress well as you get older, Skrewdriver records, touring, etc, etc etc. Ted is a handsome mensch who makes good music and you should listen to what he has to say! He has a new record he's kickstarting, so bless him with some cash. If you're wondering why we didn't talk about the current political climate it's because this interview happened a long ass time ago! Luckily, Ted was on This Week In Atrocity last week talking about the artist's place in the current political climate and it's a great convo, so if you can't get enough of the man TL, listen to that.
