Prudence Robertson on pro-life reporting, EWTN Pro-Life Weekly, and the dawning of a post-Roe America

Prudence Robertson on pro-life reporting, EWTN Pro-Life Weekly, and the dawning of a post-Roe America

Where can we go for truthful reporting in a time when so much of our news media has returned to the age of sensationalism, dubious tabloid-style journalism, and blinkered partisanship? If we're searching for truthful and reliable news on the pro-life cause, we need look no further than EWTN Pro-Life Weekly. Today we speak with Prudence Robertson, host of EWTN Pro-Life Weekly, the leading national media coverage source dedicated exclusively to pro-life news. As Robertson stated in an interview with NCR, her pro-life convictions have been "strengthened by seeing the beauty of adoption, attending a faithful Catholic college, and witnessing the fruits of how reasoned, charitable dialogue can persuade people to become pro-life.” EWTN Pro-Life Weekly https://www.ewtn.com/tv/shows/ewtn-pro-life-weekly Prudence Robertson on Twitter https://twitter.com/pruspulse

Samuel D. Green on Reason for Life and sharing the pro-life message through Christian communities

We speak today with Samuel D. Green, President & General Counsel of Reason for Life. Reason for Life encourages, equips, and educates Christian leaders who are hesitant to address abortion, helping them see that sharing the truth about this subject is both essential and loving. Before founding Reason for Life, Samuel spent five years at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), where he engaged in litigation to defend the sanctity of life, freedom of speech, and religious liberty. Samuel has also worked as a litigation associate at a large law firm (Jenner & Block), as a member of a presidential campaign’s legal team, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.  Samuel finished first in his class at Pepperdine University School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 2011. He also studied political science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he graduated, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2008. Samuel has provided legislative testimony, preached sermons about the sanctity of life, and given presentations across the country to various groups or their chapters (including Students for Life of America, 40 Days for Life, Summit Ministries, Teen Pact Leadership Schools, the Federalist Society, and the St. Thomas More Society). Samuel has also participated in media interviews and published articles with various outlets, including Newsweek, The Seattle Times, The Hill, Washington Examiner, The Federalist, and The Daily Signal. Additionally, Samuel authored a legal brief in the historic Supreme Court case that overturned Roe v. Wade. Reason for Life: Changing Hearts, Saving Lives https://reasonforlife.org

Dr. John Bruchalski on Tepeyac OB/GYN and his conversion from abortionist to pro-life advocate

Dr. John Bruchalski on Tepeyac OB/GYN and his conversion from abortionist to pro-life advocate

We speak today with Dr. John Bruchalski, a physician who has committed himself to the practice of holistic and life-affirming medicine.. Nearly 30 years ago, Dr. Bruchalski and his wife founded the Tepeyac Family Center, a pro-life obstetrics and gynecology medical practice. Tepeyac’s mission? To provide affordable care to all women, especially those in most need and those experiencing unexpected pregnancies. Dr. Bruchalski also started the Divine Mercy Care network, an umbrella organization, to support Tepeyac. Prior to starting Tepeyac, Dr. Bruchalski was a physician who performed abortions and specialized in advanced fertility treatments. After several alarming and heart-gripping experiences, he began rethinking his career and found a new, life-affirming vocation in medicine. Dr. Bruchalski is a doctor, husband, speaker, teacher, and we speak with him about what it means to be a pro-life physician and the culture-shaping vision and mission of Tepeyac and missions like it. Amb. Sam Brownback on American identity, serving as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, and the human right to life

Amb. Sam Brownback on American identity, serving as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, and the human right to life

We speak today about the relationship between the human right to life and the right to religious freedom.  Our freedoms of thought, conscience, and religion are natural and interdependent rights, and when rightly understood, they serve to elevate our conception of the meaning and purpose of human life—the goods we recognize that are a part of the created order, and what this created order suggests about our origins and our destiny. The human right to life is the first and more fundamental of all human rights, but the human right to religious freedom matters, too, because to be human is to pursue the truth. Today we speak with Amb. Sam Brownback, who served most recently as the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom and continues to work with coalitions around the globe to promote and protect the right to religious liberty.  He is currently serving as a fellow at the Center for Religous Studies at The Catholic University of America. Before his appointment as U.S. Ambassador, Brownback previously served as a U.S. Senator and the 26th Governor of Kansas. Amb. Brownback is a prolific attorney, politician and diplomat and we speak with him about the importance of religous liberty, the human right to life, and what faith means to him personally. Amb. Mayra Rodriguez, ex-Planned Parenthood director and whistleblower, on becoming unapologetically pro-life

Mayra Rodriguez, ex-Planned Parenthood director and whistleblower, on becoming unapologetically pro-life

The reversal of Roe v. Wade is changing the landscape for the human right to life across America. We know of so many states where the human right to life is being affirming, enshrined, and upheld. Unfortunately, however, many states and cities will continue to perpetuate abortion. Planned Parenthood and abortion businesses are multi-billion dollar Goliaths whose power remains intact, even though abortion is no longer recognized, as it unfortunately was for too long, as a right. Today we are excited to speak with Mayra Rodriguez, former director of three Planned Parenthood facilities. Mayra left the abortion industry, and in 2019 Mayra prevailed in a $3 million lawsuit for wrongful termination against Planned Parenthood. Mayra sees her life has having been transformed by the mercy of God, and now sees it as her life mission to expose Planned Parenthood, abortion businesses, and to make abortion unthinkable. Mayra is a speaker, wife, mother, and courageous pro-life leader. Mayra joins Tom Shakely and Elli Jochims on Life, Liberty, and Law. Catherine Glenn Foster and Josh Craddock on the twilight of Roe and the dawning of U.S. Constitutional protections for the human right to life

Catherine Glenn Foster and Josh Craddock on the twilight of Roe and the dawning of U.S. Constitutional protections for the human right to life

The overturning of Roe v. Wade continues to send shockwaves through not only the United States of America, but also our allies internationally. For the first time, many are discovering that the overturning of Roe and the ending of our extreme abortion jurisprudence actually doesn’t change that much on the ground in states that will continue to be pro-abortion, and that in states that are embracing pro-life law and policy, most American pro-life law mirrors European-style protections—for instance, Mississippi’s law which the U.S. Supreme Court just upheld protects life at 15 weeks of a preborn child’s life. This means that Mississippi’s abortion laws are, actually, more liberal than the abortion laws on the books in nations like Italy, France, or most other European allies. If Roe’s reversal means that even pro-life states will generally mimic European-style laws, where killing is still permissible throughout the first months of a child’s life, does this represent a true pro-life victory? No. There’s more to be done—Americans United for Life will continue to call upon the Executive, Legisltive, and Judicial branches to clarify that abortion is fundamentally incompatible with constitutional justice. We will continue to call upon the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify that natural human rights precede the letter of any constitution, and that our first and most fundamental of all human rights—the human right to life—means that unborn children are entitled to the equal protection of the laws. Today we feature an important conversation hosted by our friends at Live Action on June 24th, 2022, the day of the release of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision and its reversal of Roe v. Wade. Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life speaks on what true constitutional justice looks like, and how the pro-life movement can cast a vision of a truly brighter future for all. Catherine is joined by Josh Craddock, Affiliated Scholar at the James Wilson Institute and Noah Brandt, Director of Government Affairs at Live Action. Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life joins Steven H. Aden, Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel and Tom Shakely on AUL's "Life, Liberty, and Law" to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade and the future of pro-life advocacy. “Today, the U.S. Supreme Court has correctly and courageously reversed Roe v. Wade and restored a future full of hope for Americans of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs. No more will the national fiction of abortion violence be perpetuated as if it could be a constitutional right. After nearly fifty years and the loss of more than sixty-two million American lives, Americans can once more choose to protect human life through their elected lawmakers,” said Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life. “Today is a promise of hope for all members in the human family, but especially for women and those millions who will now be protected from prenatal violence,” said Catherine Glenn Foster. “The work of Americans United for Life and the Pro-Life Movement has truly just begun. We invite all Americans to walk alongside us in the days, months, and years to come to enshrine pro-life laws in every state to uphold the human right to life, and to work toward the urgent and still necessary goal of abolishing abortion in American culture. We must clarify, as a constitutional matter as much as a matter of fundamental justice, that abortion shall not exist in the United States of America. And we must simultaneously strengthen American programs ensuring every person, born and not yet born, is equipped and empowered to thrive.” A New Day at Last: U.S. Supreme Court Reverses Roe v. Dr. Catherine Ruth Pakaluk on American birth rates, pro-family policies, and paths to glory in everyday life

Dr. Catherine Ruth Pakaluk on American birth rates, pro-family policies, and paths to glory in everyday life

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020 and Americans entered into what authorities assured us would be "two weeks to slow the spread," many predicted a baby boom would be the natural result of this time of closeness in quarantine. Yet there’s been no baby boom. And in fact, it looks like family formation and birth rates may, in fact, be continuing to decline as a result of the pandemic and the economic fallout of more than two years of ad hoc state and fiscal policy decisions. As human persons, we’re make for relationship. We’re made for each other. We’re made for family and for community. We’re made for love. These insights are at the heart of Americans United for Life and our mission to advance the human right to life in culture, law, and policy. So what do these challenging trends in birth rates, family formation, and economic portend for American life—and a possible poe-Roe cultural and political environment?  We’re thrilled to speak today with Dr. Catherine Ruth Pakaluk, Associate Professor at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Pakaluk joined the faculty at the Busch School in the summer of 2016, and is the founder of the Social Research academic area, where she is an Associate Professor of Social Research and Economic Thought. Formerly, she was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Economics Department at Ave Maria University. Her primary areas of research include economics of education and religion, family studies and demography, Catholic social thought and political economy. Dr. Jeffrey Barrows on physician assisted suicide, the importance of solidarity for human dignity, and laws protecting patients from suicide and euthanasia

Dr. Jeffrey Barrows on physician assisted suicide, the importance of solidarity for human dignity, and laws protecting patients from suicide and euthanasia

America has been grappling with suicide for decades. The anti-life logic of Roe v. Wade in 1973 made it inevitable that suicide, and the effort to legalize suicide, would join abortion as a major national issue. Although the Supreme Court, thankfully, ruled 9-0 in the 1997 case Washington v. Glucksberg that the Constitution contains no right to assisted suicide—the Court in essence punted the issue to the states, allowing assisted suicide to be imposed on the state level. So although the Court saved us in 1997 from a Roe v. Wade style national imposition of assisted suicide, the Court did not find that the Constitution is incompatible with the injustice of suicide and suicide assistance. What has taken place over quarter century since that 1997 case is a slow but steady increase in states permitting suicide assistance—most commonly through what is termed “physician assisted suicide”. Dr. Jeffrey J. Barrows joins us today to speak about physician assisted suicide, why suicide prevention (rather than assistance) is at the heart of good medicine, and how to respond hopefully and positively to the challenges of life. Dr. Barrows serves as Senior Vice President of Bioethics and Public Policy for Christian Medical & Dental Associations. Steve Aden and Katie Glenn on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, and the ability for justices to evolve

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has wrapped up its weeklong hearings with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who appears set to succeed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Judge Jackson describes Roe v. Wade as settled law and would be a reliable vote for abortion on the high court, yet describes herself as an originalist. Steven H. Aden, Chief Legal Officer at Americans United for Life joins Katie Glenn, Government Affairs Counsel, to speak about Judge Jackson's surprising claim and reflect on what Justice Jackson might for the future of the Supreme Court and for abortion jurisprudence.

Dr. Donna Harrison on chemical abortion pills, the risks of abortion pills to women, and the post-Roe pro-abortion strategy

Today we share an important talk by Dr. Donna Harrison, a physician, board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, who serves as CEO of the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Harrison recently joined Clarke Forsythe, Senior Counsel at Americans United for Life, for one of AUL's "Quarterly Calls" on timely and relevant issues facing America and the pro-life movement. Dr. Harrison speaks on chemical abortion pills, the risks of abortion pills to women, and the post-Roe pro-abortion strategy. As background to Dr. Harrison's talk, consider watching this VICE News piece, entitled “Inside Texas’s Underground Abortion Pill Network”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR3uexqGgXo VICE News documents the trafficking of chemical abortion between Texas and Mexico. Notice how misoprostol is casually referred to in the video and used, independent of mifepristone, and how little information is given about what mifepristone and misoprostol are or how they work or their risks. This is the pro-abortion plan for “post-Roe" America.

Saurabh Sharma of American Moment on Justice Stephen Breyer's retirement, the stakes for pro-life law and policymaking, and post-Roe politics

At Americans United for Life, we’re committed to advancing the human right to life in culture, law, and policy. We do this at the federal level, by working with and influencing all three branches of our federal government, and we do this work in the states, by working with advocates and lawmakers to pass robust laws that protect children, their mothers and fathers, and whole communities. You can’t foster the kind of culture needed for a thriving America without family, without friends, without working together with a shared vision of a better future. We need allies in the work, or else it doesn’t get done. The same is true in politics, especially at our federal level. Americans can elect powerful pro-life politicians, but if they’ve got no one to work with when they get to Washington, DC, if they’ve got no allies, no reliable staffers, no support—what can we really expect them to get done? Saurabh Sharma, President of American Moment, is working to improve Washington and build community for the leaders who need it. We speak with Saurabh today on Justice Stephen Breyer's retirement, the stakes for pro-life law and policymaking, the work of American Moment and its mission and priorities, and potential post-Roe politics. Clarke Forsythe on Roe v. Wade's anniversary, the Supreme Court's need for courage and humility, and decades judicial and scholarly criticism

Clarke Forsythe on Roe v. Wade's anniversary, the Supreme Court's need for courage and humility, and decades judicial and scholarly criticism

"There is a wide-spread myth that Roe v. Wade is settled and entitled to respect as judicial precedent. The purveyors of this myth must ignore the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions going back to the earliest days of the Court—which point to judicial criticism and legal-scholarly criticism as keeping prior decisions unsettled.  "Most importantly, they purveyors of the myth that Roe is settled and entitled to respect as judicial precedent must ignore four decades of detailed, comprehensive, and specific judicial and scholarly criticism of Roe itself. It is precisely because Roe has never been settled that it is entitled to no respect as precedent. In fact, because Roe is radically unsettled, long-standing principles of precedent dictate that it must be reconsidered." These words are from Clarke Forsythe, Senior Counsel at Americans United for Life and author of AUL's just-released, “A Survey of Judicial and Scholarly Criticism of Roe v. Wade Since 1973: Legal Criticism and Unsettled Precedent”. We speak with Clarke today about his new and important survey of judicial and scholarly criticism of Roe and what lessons that advocates and lawmakers can take away from the past half century of popular, constitutional criticism of Roe and abortion culture. Aubrey Schlackman on Blue Haven Ranch, the virtue of hospitality, and offering what you have for mothers considering abortion

Aubrey Schlackman on Blue Haven Ranch, the virtue of hospitality, and offering what you have for mothers considering abortion

Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses have been on the decline in America for years now. It's common knowledge amongst Americans within the pro-life community that life-affirming pregnancy resource centers today outnumber abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood by more than three to one. If you were to scatter all those pro-life pregnancy resource centers evenly across the country, every county in America would have at least one pro-life pregnancy resource center. What makes America's experience since Roe all the more remarkable is that there is no pro-life equivalent of Planned Parenthood—there's no mega-NGO or national nonprofit organization organizing the alternatives-to-abortion movement. It's everyday women and men, the hometown heroes who we sometimes imagine only still exist in our cultural imagination, who are building the alternatives that charity, justice, and simple decency calls for. Aubrey Schlackman, Founder & Executive Director of Blue Haven Ranch, is one of these American heroes. We speak with Aubrey today to learn what drew her, and her husband Bryan, to the issue of abortion alternatives, what sets Blue Haven Ranch apart, and how supportive communities can come together to promote resilient alternatives for the future. Carolyn McDonnell on the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs oral arguments and how to champion mothers in the new year

Carolyn McDonnell on the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs oral arguments and how to champion mothers in the new year

It’s been a full and fruitful year! Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health presented the most comprehensive oral argument the U.S. Supreme Court has heard on abortion—covering a spectrum of abortion issues, including stare decisis, the undue burden standard’s viability line, women’s social reliance upon abortion, the distorted legal history of abortion, federalism, and the impact of safe haven laws. This case is primed to overrule Roe v. Wade and nearly fifty years of a federal constitutional travesty that manufactured a woman’s right to abort her unborn child. Instead of speaking in vague terms, today we will break down each of the Supreme Court Justice’s arguments and questions presented on December 1st.  We are joined today by Carolyn McDonnell, Americans United for Life Staff Counsel. Carolyn focuses on amicus briefs, federal legislative affairs, and international advocacy for the human right to life. Carolyn recently joined our team and we are excited to kick off the New Year reflecting on lessons from 2021 and casting a vision for the future.  Pro-Life Legal Analysis of Oral Arguments in Dobbs v. Abby Balmert, AUL Law & Policy Fellow, reflects on this year’s life advances and the privilege of playing a part

It has been a monumental year in the pro-life movement and Americans United for Life has flourished. Our team has adjusted to pandemic challenges and capitalized on crucial opportunities to advance the human right to life.  In 2021, this movement proved to be resilient, creative, and strong. In the summer of 2021, AUL hosted legal fellows and undergraduate interns in its Washington, DC office. These fellows spent countless hours researching, writing, and preparing for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health and other crucial decisions like allowing the Texas Heartbeat Act to remain in effect.  Today we are joined by Abby Balmert, an AUL Law & Policy Fellow, who played a huge role in AUL’s strong presence this year.  Roe’s Reversal Would Not be Unprecedented https://aul.org/2021/12/14/reversing-roe-v-wade-not-unprecedented/ Americans United for Life | Give https://aul.org/give

Peter Atkinson on The Merry Beggars, life-affirming art and entertainment, and creative advocacy

Christmas is coming, and it is a time where we remember the importance of family and friends and gather around the table or in the living room to enjoy a Christmas classic. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder and harder to sift through the junk on TV and find something that highlights the beauty and fun of art and life. Peter Atkinson is an off-broadway star who has made it his mission to produce wholesome, engaging audio entertainment for the whole family. His entertainment company the Merry Beggars is merging with Relevant Radio in order to provide world-class entertainment to families across the United States. We are interviewing him today because his distinctive work—uplifting mothers, fathers, and family life, affirming the good where it is, nourishing goodness where it isn’t, and enlivening the culture—all of this intersects with the vision of the cause for life in America. Peter has found a way to combine his gifts and talents with advocacy for the dignity of the human person. We think Peter is the perfect person to help us celebrate this season of light and love. Katie Glenn and Steven Aden reflect on Dobbs oral arguments and the empty shell of Roe v. Wade

Last week, Americans United for Life represented those with a pro-life worldview on the steps of the US Supreme Court and within the halls as well. Katie Glenn and Steven Aden on Dobbs oral arguments and the case’s main questions and opportunities

Americans United for Life works every day to defend the human right to life in culture, law, and policy, and today we get to see the fruit of our team and supporters’ passionate, justified, righteous efforts. Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health is a case that has reached the Supreme Court because America is a place where all life should be embraced. For too long, the legal precedents of Roe and Casey have had a costly hold on American law, misrepresenting the beliefs of the majority of Americans and distorting our very own Constitution. This week, we get to witness history.  https://aul.org/

Lyman Stone on missing abortion data, America’s falling fertility, & incentives for family formation

Lyman Stone on missing abortion data, America’s falling fertility, & incentives for family formation

There are stark social consequences for America’s declining fertility. What can we do to reverse the trends we’re seeing? Politicians on both sides of the aisle propose incentives and resources for family formation, it is difficult to know which options would be successful. Good ideas for policy change begin with good data, and through commitment and cooperation we can move in a pro-family, pro-life direction. Good data, however, is something that is unheard of when it comes to abortion. The abortion industry wants to hide the stories of mothers who have had traumatizing experiences with chemical or surgical abortion, and they have manipulated the government to rollback requirements on reporting. Today we are joined by an expert in data analysis to help us sift through ideas for strengthening the American family. Lyman Stone is currently an adjunct fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a Research Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, and a former International Economist at the US Department of Agriculture, where he forecasts cotton market conditions. His work has been covered in the The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous local outlets. Brad Wilcox on the fate of families during COVID, how marriage and abortion trends are correlated

Brad Wilcox on the fate of families during COVID, how marriage and abortion trends are correlated

Marriage and childbearing are at an all-time low in American history. This certainly affects the decisions of those who are considering abortion and delights those who are selling it. The emotional, financial, and relational toll of the past year and a half have left people with less optimism for family life and fewer connections to make it a reality. On the other hand, isolation and reflection in the past year have made some reconsider their desire for family. Unfortunately, the realities of pandemic life have driven many families apart. The Institute for Family Studies has conducted research pointing to this conclusion, and today we’re joined by IFS and AEI scholar Brad Wilcox to discuss the results. Erica Bachiochi on whole-life women’s rights, reliance interest in Dobbs, and common good thinking

Erica Bachiochi on whole-life women’s rights, reliance interest in Dobbs, and common good thinking

With Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health on the horizon, a host of voices have spoken out about the Supreme Court’s opportunity to rediscovery human right to life in its fullness in the United States Constitution. Fifty years ago, children in the womb were legally marginalized by a majority vote of 7 men on the U.S. Supreme Court who deemed those not yet born as merely “potential life.” Our culture has vastly changed in these past five decades—whether the Court has changed along with it is the question that the outcome in Dobbs will answer. Erika is advocating on many fronts for the human person and for the human family. Erika is a wife, mother of seven, fellow with the Ethics & Public Policy Center, director of the Wollstonecraft Project at the Abigail Adams Institute, and a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School. Erika is the author of The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision, in which she offers an original look at the development of feminism in the United States, advancing a vision of rights that rests upon our responsibilities to others. Erika, along with 239 other pro-life feminist scholars and professionals, has made her voice heard in the upcoming Supreme Court case. Their message? Roe and its progeny Casey may have foisted abortion upon Americans, but no woman relies on abortion for success in this society. We speak with Erika today on her book, on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, and on reclaiming common good thinking. https://aul.org/ Wollstonecraft Project: https://www.abigailadamsinstitute.org/aai-wollstonecraft-project Twitter: @erikabachiochi

Senator James Lankford on the battle for Hyde, Court action on Texas law, civics and compassion

Senator James Lankford on the battle for Hyde, Court action on Texas law, civics and compassion

Abortion history in American law and policy is a dark chapter in American history. Some have accepted a culture of abortion as the new popular norm, but Americans United for Life, partners like you, and many bold elected officials are not giving up. With Texas abortion law procedures on the Supreme Court’s docket and Dobbs on the horizon, it is time for individuals and states to prepare our responses to the overturn of Roe v. Wade. It takes boldness to remain pro-life in Washington, DC today. This season we’ve been analyzing the discussions happening in all three branches of government, and today we have a special guest who is on the frontlines. We are joined by Senator James Lankford, who has represented the people of Oklahoma since 2011 and uses his position to advance a culture of life. He believes in an America where people of all ages are embraced and is working daily to defend the human right to life. Visit us at https://aul.org/ today! Students For Life America's momentum and the effects of abortion on mental health and self-worth

Students For Life America's momentum and the effects of abortion on mental health and self-worth

Convenience and empowerment—this is how abortion is marketed by Planned Parenthood and its allies. Abortion is framed in terms of rights—but precisely whose rights matter is the question at the heart of America’s continuing abortion conflicts. How we talk about rights and whose rights we focus on changes the way people perceive the deadly procedure that is abortion. No matter how abortion is framed, it communicates something to our culture: you are only valuable if you are wanted, and someone else gets to decide your worth. How are these messages affecting those of us who do have the chance to live? Sarah Zarr is a warrior for life who has invested her career in building a culture of life on college campuses. As a regional manager for Students for Life, Sarah equips college students as they build campus chapters, host events, and develop leadership and advocacy skills. Sarah joins us today to discuss the widespread effects of abortion messaging on mental health and self-worth, particularly among the college students with whom she interacts on campus. https://studentsforlife.org/2021/06/01/students-for-life-confronted-by-wild-pro-abortion-protestors-during-texas-rally/ Twitter: @StudentsforLife

Dr. Michael J. New on Marist's misleading abortion poll, identifying red flags in media, and 40 Days for Life

Is it foolish to assume we can trust research institutes who conduct public opinion polls? How do we know what is true? Why are pro-lifers so often mischaracterized? This season on Life, Liberty, and Law, we are tearing down lies that are being projected to Americans from news outlets, social media, and even from the floor of Congress about the value of life. One of those abominable messages we keep hearing is this: an America where abortion is unlimited is actually what most Americans want. We want to equip you for conversations about life. When each of us share our concern for the most vulnerable in our society with our friends, coworkers, and neighbors, hearts are changed. Today we have brought in one of the best experts to give us tools on how to trudge wisely through the media’s depiction of abortion policies and culture. Monica Sewell on attacks on motherhood and opportunities for counter-cultural commitment to family

Monica Sewell on attacks on motherhood and opportunities for counter-cultural commitment to family

Our society is increasingly degrading human beings full of life to means toward the end of productivity. This season, we want to identify and address pro-abortion messaging that degrades women and erodes each person’s understanding of the value of his or her life. In the weeks since Texas’s heartbeat bill has passed, pro-life efforts have taken a prominent place in the media. In a hearing on SB8 last week, a Texas state rep boldly claimed that parenting prevents a woman’s success, and even her destiny. This presumption sounds outlandish, but it is widely accepted and affirmed, leading to a corrupted definition of success in our society. Today, we want to make a case against the message presented by Donna Howard. Motherhood, fatherhood, and family are building blocks of a thriving nation, not an outdated norm. Katie Glenn and Lisa Hogan on WHPA House vote, pregnancy resource centers, & what pro-woman means

Katie Glenn and Lisa Hogan on WHPA House vote, pregnancy resource centers, & what pro-woman means

Every day, women are being sold the lie that abortion is their only option. As the Women’s Health Protection Act was discussed in the House of Representatives, pro-abortion members accused the pro-life community of being pro-birth only, not pro-woman. According to JMIR Public Health, as of 2020 there are 2,527 crisis pregnancy centers operating in the United States. This number dwarfs the amount of operating abortion clinics and reveals the generosity of local communities. The pro-life movement is not only about fighting for the lives of babies, but also about providing mothers, fathers, and families with support and encouragement to embrace unexpected children. Americans United for Life exists to advance the right to life in culture, law, and policy, and while our presence is strong in Washington, DC and state capitals, our work would not be complete without champions for life who engage daily with families facing unplanned pregnancies. AUL Government Affairs Counsel and pregnancy resource center director Lisa Hogan discuss the legal and practical approaches to holistic care for women. Lifeline Children’s Services CEO Herbie Newell on 2 pillars of the pro-life ethic: family & adoption

Every child deserves a loving family. Being part of the human family means stepping in for those who are vulnerable and sharing hope even in the worst of circumstances. This is why adoption is an essential part of the pro-life movement. At Americans United for Life, we advance the human right to life in culture, law, and policy, and it is through partners on the ground that we take daily steps in a pro-life direction. Today, we are excited to hear the story of Lifeline Children’s Services, a partner that is providing hope to thousands of families and children around the world. Lifeline is the largest international adoption agency in America, serving families in all 50 states and abroad. Lifeline’s efforts start at home, here in the US, where their services connect mothers facing unplanned pregnancies with resources, options counseling, and if they desire, families who are seeking to adopt. Mark Miller, General Counsel to Gov. Kristi Noem, on South Dakota's chemical abortion executive order, Americans United for Life and its impact, and the impact of pro-life law and policy

Chemical abortion promises convenience, but causes silent, isolated pain. This week, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem issued an executive order urging the state’s department of health to create rules surrounding chemical abortion pills distributed through the internet. This increasingly popular method of abortion is on the rise because of its anonymity, but that is exactly the reason why Americans should be concerned. For the sake of the mother’s health, a serious procedure like abortion should not be anonymous. Women deserve much better from so-called healthcare providers. It seems every week we are discussing a new state-level pro-life law. This is because of the men and women who work day in and day out to protect life in their states. Today we are joined by Mark Miller. Mark serves as General Counsel for the state of South Dakota and works with Governor Kristi Noem as her “Unborn Child Advocate.” Mark and his team celebrated a great victory this week, and they know the fight is far from over. Join us as we discuss Mark’s pro-life journey, his experience behind the scenes of pro-life state legislation, and the implications of Governor Noem’s executive order. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/09/08/abortion-restricted-south-dakota-governor-kristi-noems-order/5768880001/

Katie Glenn on the bravery of 228 members of the U.S. Congress calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe

Katie Glenn on the bravery of 228 members of the U.S. Congress calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe

Courage always begins in the heart, and although we don’t think of it this way nearly often enough, the virtue of courage (or bravery, fortitude, whatever you want to call it) is the foundation for every good and true act of politics and action of politicians. We see the importance of courage powerfully in Mississippi’s recent brief in defense of their state’s common sense 15-week pro-life protection law. The Court will consider Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization this fall and will likely reveal its ruling in June 2022. Americans United for Life is filing two briefs in this critical Supreme Court case, meant to guide the thinking of the justices on the path to not only upholding Mississippi’s common sense pro-life law, but also reversing Roe v. Wade and ending the violence of abortion across the states. We must overcome cynicism in our politics if we want to build a better America, and that starts by recovering the virtue of courage in our imaginations as much as in our lives. We speak with Katie Glenn, GA Counsel at Americans United for Life, about Mississippi’s powerful arguments, what we’re arguing at Americans United for Life, and why there will be a fundamental reckoning if the Court does not protect life in this case. Ernest Hemingway's 'Hills Like White Elephants' and abortion's violent and coercive nature in every time and place

In a way that only he can, Ernest Hemingway uses a literary device known as the Iceberg Theory to tell stories that lead readers to personal, emotional conclusions. In the short story "Hills Like White Elephants," Hemingway alludes to abortion without ever saying the word or even mentioning a baby. In this story, you’ll hear a man and woman talking over beer and liquor at a bar in Spain while they wait for a train. The emotional space between them is tense. Another character is present—a character whose life is on the line. Today's episode is a little different than Life, Liberty, and Law's typical programing—it is a reading of Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants," sharing this timeless and timely short story and the lessons it imparts.

Abby Balmert on the human right to life in the law, Casa Teresa, and working with women in need to create a culture of life

Abortion is erroneous. And the reality is that women are often in terrible situations and abusive relationships when they face pressure to choose abortion. To capitalize on vulnerable circumstances, abortion activists ignore the connection and love that exists between babies and their mothers, declaring abortion is the only choice. At Americans United for Life, we affirm the dignity and incredible capabilities of mothers. Each summer, Americans United for Life hosts legal fellows and undergraduate interns from around the country, all of whom have unique stories about how they came to join the pro-life movement. Today Abby Balmert, an Americans United for Life Legal Fellow, joins "Life, Liberty, and Law" to share her experience in the pro-life movement. Abby is pursuing her J.D. at Georgetown Law after four years as a policy advisor on Capitol Hill involved with the Pro-Life Caucus. Abby speaks about her unique experiences, including her work with Casa Teresa in Orange County, California, which exists “to provide pregnant women in crisis a loving home to begin their healing journey and to break cycles, transform women and help families thrive through effective, caring residential programs.” We celebrate the movement to affirm and equip women throughout motherhood.

Jean-Paul Van De Walle on abortion activism at the European Parliament, the human right to life in Europe, and the hope of pro-family policies

While we usually focus on what is going on right here in the United States, today we have the opportunity to discuss what is happening on the human right to life across the Atlantic. In June, the European Parliament adopted the Matic Report, an extreme pro-abortion step that seeks to enshrine abortion as a fundamental right. To break down what pro-life advocates are doing to protect life in Europe, Tom Shakely and Noah Brandt speak with Jean-Paul Van De Walle. Hadley Arkes on human rights, natural law and moral reasoning, and ‘recovering the things we used to know’

“Judges have delivered themselves into our hands—if we have the political wit to spring the trap. On the other hand, if we don't act, if we acquiesce in this, then we may be sleepwalking. We may be merely going through the motions when we vote again later this year on partial-birth abortion. It may be unavailing. It may become a gesture without consequence.” Those are the words of Professor Hadley Arkes, pro-life legal maverick and friend of AUL’s “Life, Liberty, and Law”. He delivered those words at an Americans United for Life legislators conference in 1998, prior to the ultimately successful effort to forbid the horrendous practice of partial birth abortion. Today we delve back into the Americans United for Life archives to listen to Professor Arkes’s full address, which continues to provide insight into our efforts today in courts and legislatures to protect women and children. Let’s journey back to 1998, where Americans United for Life Senior Counsel Clarke Forsythe introduces Hadley Arkes.
