14. Life Outside of Sport- Iain Hume
Apologies for the delay, there’s been a few technical issues at our end that has delayed this episode.
What Happens Once the Game is Over?
Each week PGA Golfer Louis Harrington, Former Premier Footballer Dean Hammond & Life Outside of Sport Creator Liam Deacy will sit down to explore the highs and lows of life away from the field of play.
This week, we speak to former Tranmere Rovers, Leicester City and Canada Striker Iain Hume.
Early rejection led to a move from Canada to Tranmere. Iain progressed through the youth routes before signing for Leicester City On deadline day at the end of August 2005. Hume was Craig Levein’s most expensive signing in his first year as manager. Hume formed a fantastic strike partnership with Matty Fryatt and became a fans favourite at the then Walkers Stadium.
Following Leicester City’s relegation to the third tier Iain desperately tried to stay in the East Midlands but a dodgy contract and putting family first led to a move to Barnsley, where every changed.
On 8 November 2008, Hume sustained a fractured skull and internal bleeding following an elbow to the head, prior to challenging for the ball, from Chris Morgan against Sheffield United. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and underwent surgery. Hume fought back to return to the field but the head injury led to a stigma that plagued him until a move to Preston.
In 2014, Hume joined Kerala Blasters FC of the newly formed Indian Super League, and played the next two seasons with Atlético de Kolkata, winning the 2016 ISL season before returning to Kerala Blasters in 2017–18 Indian Super League season. He then played for FC Pune City next season in ISL.
Now back in home in Canada, Hume is using all of his experience to support the next generation. He’s in a good place and has a lot to offer after a life in professional sport.
Hume talks passionately about rejection, financial constraints, mindset, injury, the love of the game, being present and his exciting post lockdown plans.

What Happens Once the Game is Over?
Each week PGA Golfer Louis Harrington, Former Premier Footballer Dean Hammond & Life Outside of Sport Creator Liam Deacy will sit down to explore the highs and lows of life away from the field of play.
This week, we speak to former Leicester City and Sunderland winger Matt Piper.
Matt came through the youth ranks at his home town club Leicester City and scored the last goal at their former home of Filbert Street in a 2-1 win over Tottenham on May 11th 2002.
Matt was then sold to Sunderland for £3.5 million in order to save Leicester from administration. Unfortunately, injury forced him to retire early from the game leading to a battle with alcohol, drugs and eventually a suicide attempt.
A stint of rehabilitation at Tony Adam’s Sporting Chance rejuvenated Matt and led to the formation of his FSD Academy with business partner Owen Johnson.
Matt’s autobiography Out of the Darkness with Joe Brewin is available now - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Out-Darkness-Bottom-Story-Football/

What Happens Once the Game is Over?
Each week PGA Golfer Louis Harrington, Former Premier Footballer Dean Hammond & Life Outside of Sport Creator Liam Deacy will sit down to explore the highs and lows of life away from the field of play.
In this special episode, we sit down with author and journalist Mike Calvin to talk to him about his fascinating career on Fleet Street, working with the likes of Former England Cricket Captain Sir Alastair Cook, Rugby legend Gareth Thomas, Millwall Football Club and his new book Whose Game is it Anyway?.
Football has never seemed so distant from its fans. Many have been alienated by the greed and shameless self-interest of the Premier League, and no one can predict how the global game will look post-pandemic. In Whose Game Is It Anyway?, Sunday Times best-selling author Michael Calvin searches for a reason to believe. Written at the height of the Covid-19 crisis, the book is a thought-provoking, deeply personal account of the role sport and particularly football plays in everyday life. Part memoir, part manifesto, it takes the reader on a tour of the world's greatest sporting occasions and into its outposts in sub-Saharan Africa, the Amazon Basin and the Southern Ocean. Drawn from Calvin's experience as an award-winning sportswriter, covering every major sports event over 40 years in more than 80 countries, it offers first-hand insight into such icons as Muhammad Ali, Maradona and Sir Bobby Charlton. With settings ranging from a jungle clearing to a township in apartheid South Africa, this is sport as you've never seen it before.

8. Life Outside of Sport - Steve Walsh
What Happens Once the Game is Over?
Each week PGA Golfer Louis Harrington, Former Premier Footballer Dean Hammond & Life Outside of Sport Creator Liam Deacy will sit down to explore the highs and lows of life away from the field of play.
This week we speak to former Leicester City defender Steve Walsh, signed from Wigan Athletic for £100,000 the teenage centre half went on to play over 400 games for the foxes and become a club legend.
Walsh scored some of the most important goals in the clubs history at that time including two goals in the Play Off final at Wembley versus Derby County in 1994. He captained the side during their golden period under Martin O’Neill with two League Cups wins, European football and regular top 10 Premier League finishes.
Personal demons were never far from the surface, and these were fully unleashed following his unceremonious departure from Leicester City under Peter Taylor in 2000.
Depression, acute anxiety, alcohol issues, bankruptcy and divorce have plagued his post career life and in this honest conversation Walshy talks candidly about football, life and the contrasting worlds of the old-fashioned and modern day game.

7. Life Outside of Sport - Mark O’Brien
What Happens Once the Game is Over?
Each week PGA Golfer Louis Harrington, Former Premier Footballer Dean Hammond & Life Outside of Sport Creator Liam Deacy will sit down to explore the highs and lows of life away from the field of play.
This week, we sit down to hear the extraordinary story of former Derby and Newport County defender Mark O’Brien.
Aged 16, having made his Championship debut for Derby, O’Brien had a pigskin valve inserted in his heart and doctors told him the best-case scenario would be it lasted for five years, warning it could fail and he would never play professionally again. As it happens he made more than 200 career appearances, coming up against the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Fernandinho, Toby Alderweireld and James Maddison along the way.
He netted the winning strike against Notts County that secured the Great Escape for Newport County in 2017 and wrote his name into County folklore.
Not that he knew it but a League Two defeat at Leyton Orient in January 2020 would be his last professional game. A ligament injury and a fractured elbow put paid to the rest of his season but palpitations during lockdown led to a trip to a cardiologist and another seven-hour operation at Glenfield hospital in Leicester, this time to fit a mechanical valve.
O’Brien treasures an unlikely career and speaks with candour about the panic attacks, anxiety and not having the “get out clause” playing football gave him.
