17. Van Neistat (Filmmaker) The Spirited Man’s Crash Course on Life

17. Van Neistat (Filmmaker) The Spirited Man’s Crash Course on Life

Van’s channel has been my favorite thing on YouTube ever since its launch, which my friends can attest to as I’ve forced all of them to watch his content. Bert Kreisher is quoted as saying there’s no one like Van in the world, and compared his level of genius to the likes of Dave Chapelle.
It’s hard to put Van Neistat in a box. He is what happens when poetry, philosophy, filmmaking, and craftsmanship intersect. Given the choice between a fully pimped out MacBook pro and a typewriter, he chooses the typewriter every time. He’s a “repair it” instead of “replace it” sorta guy, and his hand made approach to life leaks into everything he does.
He and his brother, Casey, wrote, directed, and starred in the HBO show, The Neistat Brothers. They started vlogging before vlogging was a thing. After their tv show, Casey and Van took separate paths. Casey went on to pioneer vlogging as we know it today YouTube, and Van continued to build his filmmaking career working on projects with the illustrious contemporary artist Tom Sachs. He also directed a feature film, and has worked on many other notable projects.
One year ago, Van pulled back the curtain on his otherwise mostly private life, and launched his own YouTube channel, The Spirited Man. Casey introduced Van as his favorite YouTuber as Van does not watch YouTube, making his work one of a kind and original. Van has since gained millions of views, and coined a filmmaking style he calls the industrial essay film. His videos feel custom, explore a wide variety of profound life lessons, and have a way of unlocking the spiritedness most of us lose when we grow up.

10. Elliott Bisnow: How To Buy a Mountain, and Become Friends With the Most Powerful People on the Planet in Your 20’s

10. Elliott Bisnow: How To Buy a Mountain, and Become Friends With the Most Powerful People on the Planet in Your 20’s

Right before I joined Mike Posner on his walk across America, he asked me if Elliott had hit me up..

I said no, who’s Elliott?? His response? “ELLIOTT IS THE MOST AMAZING HUMAN ON EARTH, MEET HIM AT ALL COSTS!”

The next day, I got a FaceTime from a random number, and picked up to see a face I immediately recognized. I was in shock. This was someone I had been reading about in business books for years, someone Kody and I saw as a hero. Elliott Bisnow.

Years ago Elliott dropped out of college, and wanted to meet other up and coming entrepreneurs. He had a crazy idea.. Cold call amazing rising business leaders and invite them on an all costs paid ski trip with other amazing entrepreneurs. He got the founder of Toms to say yes. Then the founder of Vimeo, Thrillist, and College Humor among others. He then convinced sponsors to cover the costs.

The event was such a hit that he started to double this invite only gathering each year. It grew into Summit, now employing hundreds. His speakers include Jeff Bezos, Quentin Tarantino, Bill Clinton, Kobe Bryant, and Richard Branson. Elliott specializes in making surreal experiences, and has hosted these events all around the world, even renting out cruise ships.

More recently, he and his co-founders bought America’s largest ski resort, Powder Mountain, and are working on re-inventing the modern mountain town. Some of his neighbors here are Reed Hastings (the founder of Netflix), and Tim Ferriss.
