Living on the B Side
By Birgit Livesey
Through honest conversations and personal reflections, I explore how music supports us emotionally, creatively, and spiritually. From favorite songs to powerful memories, every episode highlights stories where music made a difference.
Music. People. Stories. Transformation.
My mission is to nurture a mindful community of music lovers who believe that one song can change everything.

Touched by Sound: Blanca on Energy, Trauma & the Power of Music in Therapy
In this rich and energetic episode, I am joined by the multi-passionate and deeply intuitive Blancaāmassage therapist, holistic life coach, Zumba instructor, dancer, and certified canine massage therapist. With decades of experience in the healing arts, Blanca shares how music has always been her silent co-therapistāwhether she's working with trauma survivors, veterans, or even dogs.
Together, we dive into:
⢠How music shapes the emotional landscape of a massage session
⢠Why silence can be just as therapeutic as sound
⢠Navigating energy exchange as a practitionerāand how music supports that
⢠The darker misconceptions about massage and the importance of boundaries
⢠Using specific playlists for dogs during canine massage
⢠The personal story that brought Blanca to a powerful emotional reckoning
From spa music to salsa, from trauma to trust, this conversation will inspire you to reflect on how deeply music moves through our bodies, memories, and healing journeys.

Restoration Through Sound: Jay Davids on Music, Faith & Holding On When Life Falls Apart
What happens when life throws you curveball after curveballāgrief, heartbreak, depression, loss of identityāand somehow, youāre still here?
In this moving episode, I sit down with Christian singer-songwriter Jay Davids, whose life reads like a roadmap of trials, but whose voice carries the weight of healing. Jay opens up about the personal storms heās weathered: losing his father as a teen, going through a painful divorce, surviving financial collapse, and walking through seasons of deep emotional darkness. But at every turn, one thing remainedāa song. A melody. A whisper of hope.
We talk about how music became his lifeline, even when he walked away from it. We explore the moments he wanted to give upāand the one song that helped him hang on. That song, "It Was You All Along," written in the midst of his lowest point, has now become a source of comfort to others walking through their own valleys. And in many ways, itās the heartbeat of this conversation.
⨠In this episode, we explore:
⢠How grief and faith intertwine in Jayās songwriting
⢠The difference between masking pain and truly healing it
⢠Why music can feel like a faithful friend when nothing else makes sense
⢠What āsuccessā really means when youāre rebuilding from rock bottom
⢠The unseen power of sharing your storyāeven when it still hurts
This is an episode about what it means to start again. Not with everything neatly resolved, but with honesty, grace, and music as your anchor.
If youāre in a season of transition, emotional exhaustion, or quiet rebuildingāthis oneās for you. Come as you are. Thereās space here for all of it.
Listen now and let this conversation wrap around you like a warm, familiar song.

About Jay:
On Long Island, where musical legends like Billy Joel had set the bar high, a kid named Jay discovered his passion. Growing up in a Christian household, worship was a way of life. The atmosphere of his home resonated with a chorus of melodies. After all, dinner table sing-alongs and impromptu guitar sessions were the norm, interweaving bluegrass, gospel, and praise tunes. This haven of warmth and unconventionality embraced āadoptedā family members, overflowed with love, and nurtured faith.
Jayās heart is dedicated to restoration, and his prayers echo with the hopes of bridging divides between fathers and children. His journey is a tapestry woven with threads of pain and triumph, loss and redemption, all intricately bound by faith and resilience.
With raw honesty, Jayās message touches the heart. He combines hard-earned experiences with catchy hooks, delivering profound truths and finding peace in the Comforter of broken souls to communicate emotions through song that words alone struggle to convey. Jayās musical style seamlessly blends the rough edges of classic and southern rock, the irresistible groove of R&B and funk, and the nuanced melodies reminiscent of the piano men whoāve left an indelible mark on generations. All of this is grounded in his faith and in the musical foundation of Contemporary Christian music that has surrounded him his entire life.
Jay serves as the Worship & Creative Director at Morning Star Fellowship in Quakertown and Pennsburg, PA.

Sound, Signals & Stillness: How Silvermouse Uses Music to Shift Consciousness
What happens when music becomes more than entertainment ā when it turns into a tool for presence, healing, and human connection?
In this episode of Living on the B Side, I sit down with Joanne and Justin of Silvermouse, a genre-defying music duo weaving together psychedelic soundscapes, improvisation, and brainwave entrainment to create something truly unique. Their performances, often held in community gardens or tucked-away natural spaces, are not just gigs ā theyāre experiences. Invitations to come home to yourself.
We explore:
⢠How their journey began through raves, jam bands, and creative curiosity
⢠Their partnership with the Monroe Institute, a leader in audio consciousness research
⢠The science and soul behind brainwave entrainment and how it subtly shifts states of mind
⢠Why setting ā the natural world, the people, the intention ā matters just as much as the sound
⢠And how music can be both meditative and freeing, especially for those who struggle to āquiet the mindā
This is not about fixing anyone. Itās about creating space ā through sound, presence, and deep listening ā for something gentle and real to emerge.
If youāve ever felt intimidated by meditation or longed for a more intuitive path to mindfulness and connection, this conversation might just offer the soft doorway in youāve been waiting for.
š§ Tune in and allow yourself to be surprised by what music can really do.

100 Episodes Later: Dropping the Mic & Leaning Into What Feels Right
100 episodes. Five years. Countless conversations about the power of music. During this personal and honest milestone episode, I reflect on my journey with Living on the B Sideāthe moments that moved me (to tears even!), the struggles I faced, and the lessons I have learned along the way.
I open up about the journey between passion and promotion, why turning this podcast into a business hasnāt felt right and hasnāt taken off so far, and the exhaustion of trying to fit into the traditional podcasting mould. After much reflection, I have made a big decision: this will be my last solo episode. From here on, I will focus on 1 on 1 conversation only, which I realised is me choosing joy over pressure, connection over numbers, and the freedom to create on my own terms.
If youāve ever wrestled with the balance between following your passion and the expectations that come with it, this episode is for you. Letās embrace the B-Side of lifeāwhere the real magic happens. š

About Melissa:
Intuition guided Melissaās creative decision of recording her second album - āStripped Backā - in a pared down setting. Her naked voice intimately placed against the backdrop of just the guitar played by Tom Gamble or the piano played by Arthur Lea. All this gave space for her own voice and plight to clearly emerge. Later, rising from this understanding was the idea of Sing for Sane ā a Big Sing and mental health initiative in which Melissa would extend invitations to anyone who wanted to sing with her to come and do just that. People from all walks of life would stand alongside her in public spaces, and during her concert performances, to sing on stage.
Melissa captures the audience with her own set intention which is to emit love through her music. This is evident through the emotion in her voice and her songs which see rootsy folk-blues traverse jazz and gospel tones.

I have picked the song āEvacuate the dancefloorā as the theme song for this episode because it appeared to me at a time when I needed a spark, something to remind me of the reasons why I created Living on the B Side.
Listening to the lyrics and hearing āEvacuate the dancefloorā has given me enthusiasm, passion and determination to continue to spread the word about the power of music, how it can be part of the medicine we need to keep well and healthy. Plus, I share what type of ripple effect I want to create through it all.
Whilst all is not roses and sunshine, having this medicine in my life allows me to find balance and strength to carry one. But press āplayā to hear me explain more about choosing this song and whatās been happening in my life and where I need your support.
Join me in this episode where I share all the above and a little more on the how and why this song has helped me re-centre myself.

These Dreams: An Introvert's Anthem of Hope and Inspiration
In this episode I embark on a musical journey back to the late 1980s when a song had the power to touch our hearts, stir our spirits, and inspire our dreams. Join me as I delve deep into the enchanting melody and lyrics of "These Dreams" by Heart.
From the moment the first notes of "These Dreams" filled the airwaves, it was clear that this song was something truly special. The hauntingly beautiful voice and music pulled me in it struck a chord deep within. When reflecting on my early teenage years I share a personal connection to the song that continues to resonate through the decades.
As the years passed, it became evident that "These Dreams" was more than just a tune; it was an anthem for introverts and dreamers, like myself. The song encapsulated the power of dreams, the essence of hope, and the inspiration that can drive us forward. It serves as a comforting reminder that it's okay to be introspective, to dream, and to find strength in quiet moments.
In this episode, I try to unpack the layers of meaning within the lyrics, exploring how "These Dreams" has been a constant source of encouragement and lifting my spirits. The song's timeless message still holds the power to ignite a sense of purpose, especially when the world becomes overwhelming.
My hope is that, through this discussion, you too will come to love and appreciate "These Dreams" as much as I do. Let it become part of your soundtrack to your moments of reflection, inspiration, and determination. If you find yourself in need of a lift to keep pursuing your dreams, this episode is the dose of motivation and inspiration you've been waiting for.

Song of the soul: How one song helps me find the light in the darkness
In this episode, I'm going to be using Jiminās (of BTS) song āāSet me free part 2āā to talk about why this song is my second song in a trilogy of songs given to me by music, and how I apply it to my current life.
This song for me focuses on having determination, passion and overcoming and basically stepping into my true self. I feel I'm at a point where I need to get out of my own way much more, what do I want in life and how do I want to spend living it?!
It is time for me to step up and more into who I truly am, let the world know and ditch fear and concern about who says what, where and when and why.
This song is truly a wonderful anthem for anyone that struggles with letting go of these emotions and empowering to keep that determination and passion going to overcome our often self-created hurdles in life.

How to become more intuitive with the help of music, with Peta-Ann Wood
Do you know how music is part of being clairaudient?
I did not until I met Peta-Ann and her deep ability to see and feel music on a completely different level. She is a woman that approaches life from an angle of acceptance, love and inclusivity and in a way that is elegant but also rebellious. She is the definition of āElegant Rebelā and it is also her mission to make each and every one of us understand that we too are unique and need to share this with the world, without apology.
Part of her journey through life is deeply connected with music. And music is there to nudge her, sometimes gently other times more forcefully, to make her stop, listen and receive messages sent to her that she needs to hear and learn from.
In our chat Peta-Ann shares situations where music literally changes her mood and life. Also how growing up she always felt this deep and powerful connection to it, how this incorporates with her Woo Wooā lifestyle and what she wants others to realise when it comes to having music in their life.
A powerful and rebellious chat that hopefully will make your ears prick up a little more when it comes to songs and sounds that are around you.
During chat we discussed:
⢠Her music story; from childhood to today
⢠The importance of music in her life
⢠Examples of how music can bring deep & lasting memories for us
⢠The power of music combined with intuition
⢠Elegant Rebel ā the story of staying flat after break cancer & how music is connected to this
⢠Why tuning into clairaudience is needed for personal development
⢠Two songs that mean a lot to her,
⢠Why āWoo wooā is not what people think it is
⢠Peta-Annās message to everyone

Peta-Ann is the Founder of Elegant Rebel, providing support for other soul-full rebels in rediscovering their uniqueness and celebrating all that they are and can be. Elegant Rebels choose to follow their inner-knowing instead of societal norms and take heart-centred action filled with compassion, kindness and grace.
Peta-Ann is also a breast cancer thriver, having a bilateral mastectomy in her mid-40s. Post mastectomy, she decided to elegantly rebel against societyās version of normal and chose to āstay-flatā ā meaning no prosthesis and no reconstruction.
This decision came after much soul searching, trial and error and discovering the really odd things that may occur to your mind, body and soul after having a bilateral mastectomy.

More than words: How to Use Music to Build Self-Love
How do we cultivate more self-love? How can we start to pay more attention to ourselves and give us the time and attention we need to embrace our uniqueness and accept us for who and how we are?
I started to ask myself these questions (again) after recording the interview with Barbara in episode 69 (you can listen/watch it right here). She went through a process of looking at her life and make changes, which have led her to a happier life overall ā AND starting to love herself, too!
Self-love. It sounds so easy in theory to achieve this, yet most of us start off great and then feel we fail because we arenāt consistent in looking after ourselves. Or we find it super hard to even try to give ourselves what we so deeply want of others and give to others.
How can we find ways to fall in love with ourselves and continue this path, no matter what life throws at us?
I believe we need to do āMore than Wordsā and jump into action mode. When it comes to us and provide what we need, words arenātā enough anymore. I have picked this beautiful song by Extreme as the song to accompany this episode as the lyrics so beautifully highlight the need to stop talking about what we can and should do and start taking the steps to find our love for ourselves.
During this episode I try to share my view on what self-love is, why it is important and how music can help us with this process to create awareness on own āself-love scaleā, ways to incorporate on our journey and fill our own cup up first.
I also mention a Spotify self-love playlist that you can use to remind yourself to keep working on that important part of your life. Go and give it a listen and please get in touch if you have more to add to this list.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5krG8JZ9XWyctGh7LbcJQm?si=2e8c6ae9609d42e5 Letās make sure we all love ourselves more deeply and passionately so we can love others equally.
The rock band Extreme's song I refer to during this episode is 'More than Words' https://youtu.be/UrIiLvg58SY ''Saying "I love you"
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel''
During this episode I chat about:
⢠How can music help us with self-love (3:19)
⢠The best way to start your self-love journey (8:02)
⢠How to help yourself with this journey (12:10)

Listen to music to help strengthen your family bond, chat with Jenn Abbatiello
Music loving parents listen up ā this episode is for you! I have invited Jenn Abbatiello to spill the beans on how to strengthen the bond between parent and child by using music.
From how music effects your childās brain and hence emotions to incorporating music in our daily lives, Jenn shares her own experiences and tips on this topic. Also, through working with many parents she believes that to parent with compassion, empathy, kindness and love it is up to us adults to learn to regulate our own emotions first.
Tune in and listen to a wonderfully insightful chat around parenting, emotions and how music definitely can help you with that.
During out time together we chatted about:
⢠Why we adults have to learn to regulate our emotions (for our kids)
⢠Who struggles more with emotions - mum or dad?
⢠Tips for parents and how to integrate music with their parenting
⢠Why it's important to ensure both boys and girls are emotionally regulated and well
⢠Her favourite song & band & some cool stories around that
⢠What type of music her own kids listen to
⢠How important music is in her home and how it helps with her parenting
⢠Why we should expose children to all emotions and music that makes them feel it
⢠Song that describes her life and or business right now
⢠Final words (includes a FAB quote!)
More about Jenn:
Outwardly my life looked idyllic; successful career, beautiful family but on the inside I was a mess. Desperate to stop my child's tantrums. It wasn't until I learned to shift my lens and look inwards that I was able to decode my own triggers. What message they were sending me. My child was a mirror showing me parts of myself that remained unhealed. When I healed those parts I was able to look at my child with a different lens of love and compassion and finally break the cycle.
I became more loving towards myself, my now 2 boys and my husband as well. I found more joy, confidence and calm in my parenting AND life.
This is why I am committed to helping other momās break cycles of guilt, anger and shame. Music is a part of that healing journey.

Billy Coleās Biography:
At the age of 17 I went to The University of New York at Morrisville where I studied musical Instrument repair. With diploma in hand, I applied for work but found that no music store wanted to hire me. So, I opened my own shop "Cole's Woodwind and Brass" Soon after I married my high school sweetheart Mary Alice. through many serendipitous twists and turns, we raised our family with our little music shop. Today, after 45 years of working on horns, I reflect back with great appreciation for a life that has given so much. In an effort to give back I travelled to the impoverished nation of Haiti in 2016 to teach instrument repair. After returning several times, I founded Horns for Haiti Inc. in 2020, an organization that teaches band instrument repair and how to start your own music business. To date, we've trained dozens of musicians and music teachers how to repair and started two businesses. Billy Shop D'Haiti, Musical Instrument Repair and the Haitian Music Supply Company.

The best is yet to come; Using intentions to create a better life
In this first episode of 2023 I share with you why I chose to set intentions rather than āNew Years Resolutionsā or big goals.
I also decided to have monthly theme songs and share how these are connected to my intentions, plus I share some ideas how you can use intentions for yourself. I give you an example of my January theme song, which I hope explains what I try to achieve through this process a little more.
Plus, why I did not do a ā2022 in reviewā episode and why that was a blessing in disguise as it allowed me to realise a few things that I needed to move forward.
During this episode I chat about:
Ā· How my December 2022 did not turn out as I planned
Ā· Why this was a blessing in disguise
Ā· Quick 2022 review for my podcast
Ā· Why I am setting intentions instead of goals
Ā· My theme song for January 2022
