Award-winning filmmaker Ky Dickens is best known for her acclaimed documentaries that shift public policy and culture. She’s been hailed a storyteller at the intersection of film and complex social issues - demonstrated by receiving the Focus Award for Achievement in Directing and the Change Make Award for influencing social change through art and film.

Her 2021 Film, #TimeToCare premiered at SXSW and then for the United State Congress. #TimeToCare goes behind the scenes with social influencers whose surreal caregiving journeys made them TikTok sensations. Her film ZERO WEEKS (Amazon), about America’s paid leave crisis, premiered its trailer at the White House Summit on the United State of Women, hosted by Oprah & Michelle Obama. Her 2019 film, THE CITY THAT SOLD AMERICA (Freestyle Releasing), is about Chicago’s crucial place in American consumer culture and modern advertising. The film is a sequel to Emmy-award-winning ART & COPY. Her groundbreaking film, SOLE SURVIVOR (CNN FILMS), profiled lone survivors of otherwise fatal plane crashes. From 2019-2021, Ky rolled out a series of award-winning short films about Americans dying of curable diseases due to the Medicaid Gap (CRITICAL CONDITION, ON THE EDGE & LEFT BEHIND). In addition to her feature film work, Ky directs commercials for some of the biggest brands in America. Her clients include Netflix, Google, Facebook, TikTok, and Johnson & Johnson. She’s an active member of Film Fatales Los Angeles and a member of the Directors Guild of America.
Having a brother on the spectrum, Ky’s been active in the special needs community her entire life, starting in high school, where she spearheaded the district’s inclusion program. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors from Vanderbilt University and lives in Los Angeles.

221: Dr. Pamela Douglas - What's the best way to raise a baby?
Dr Pamela Douglas is an Australian GP, researcher, author, and an international leader in caring for parents and babies, with a special interest in perinatal mental health and breastfeeding medicine.
Over the past 20 years, Pam has published the evidence base to the programs known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC, or 'The Possums Programs'), translating the research into education programs offering a paradigm shift in the way we help families who face breastfeeding, baby sleep, and cry-fuss challenges. Her groundbreaking work is detailed in 30 international research publications and her best-selling book, The Discontented Little Baby Book.
In this conversation, we discuss how to optimize infant development, parental well-being, and grow joy in early life. Pam emphasizes the importance of experimentation and frequent, flexible breastfeeding in the early days and also discusses the Gestalt method of fit and hold.
In terms of sleep, Pam acknowledges the polarizing nature of the sleep training debate and highlights the need for individualized approaches to sleep based on the unique needs of the baby and family. We also discuss the importance of understanding the biological needs of babies when it comes to sleep, emphasizing that sleep distress in our society is often caused by societal and health system-induced beliefs and practices that are not evidence-based. Pam highlights the variability in babies' sleep needs and advocates for a more evolutionary and intuitive approach to parenting that focuses on meeting babies' sensory and motor needs.

219: Dr. Lyndsey Hookway - What must I know about babies and sleep?
Dr. Lyndsey Hookway is a pediatric nurse, researcher, author, lactation consultant, and advocate for gentle parenting practices. Lyndsey believes that sleep is an art and a science influenced by various factors such as relationships, stress, and social interaction. She challenges the cultural trend of actively managing sleep through non-responsive approaches like cry-it-out methods, emphasizing the importance of communication and responsiveness in parenting.
The amount of sleep a newborn needs can vary greatly, from 8 to 18 hours a day, so it is important for parents to understand their baby's individual sleep needs and cues. Lyndsey encourages parents to focus on the present relationship with their child and make informed choices.

Takeaways
- Parenting is a journey of uncertainty and constant change, and parents need to embrace this uncertainty and navigate it with grace and compassion.
- Mainstream parenting narratives often create narrow expectations and can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It is important to disrupt these narratives and find parenting approaches that align with individual values and circumstances.
- Open communication and collaboration between partners are crucial in parenting. It is important to have conversations about expectations, roles, and values before a baby's arrival to avoid conflicts and resentment.
- Western cultures lack adequate training and support for parents, leading to feelings of isolation and overwhelm. Building a community-based approach to parenting can provide the necessary support and guidance for new parents.
- Babies are highly sensitive to their caregivers' emotional states, and tuning into their needs and emotions can create a strong and nurturing parent-child bond. New parents need support and reassurance from a community or village-like network.
- Seeking support and validation from others is important to counteract the narrative that parents should cope independently.
- Breaking generational cycles is a process that involves bending the cycle rather than completely breaking it.

200: A Random Show with Traver Boehm
To celebrate the 200th episode of this podcast, I asked my good friend, Traver Boehm, to get weird and do something a bit different. I sent him a text asking him to think about a couple of random things he loves or is inspired by so we could talk about them. Neither of us knew what the other was bringing to the table. A surprising feast ensued.
I've long loved the podcast conversations Tim Ferriss has with his pal, Kevin Rose, so I decided to emulate that here. This chat is informal and unpredictable. It's also filled with random stories, lots of laughter, and it's quite different than any other I've done before. Please let me know what you think. If you like it, perhaps I can invite more friends to have similar chats.
And a huge and grateful THANK YOU to everyone who listens and shares the podcast. I appreciate you.

199: Erin Skye Kelly - Can you end money fights forever?
Erin Skye Kelly is a multiple award-winning author who has helped thousands of people pay off millions of dollars in consumer debt and ultimately change their lives, through her online course, Get the Hell Out of Debt.
Erin has written two best-selling books:
- Get The Hell Out Of Debt - The Proven 3-Phase Method That Will Radically Shift Your Relationship With Money
- Naked Money Meetings - Ending Money Fights With Your Partner Forever
In spite of her terrible stage fright and general Canadian awkwardness, she has shared the stage with legendary motivational speakers such as Tony Robbins, Phil Town, and Gary John Bishop.
She wrote her first book, Get the Hell Out of Debt, after her own struggle to become free from consumer debt. She was tired of listening to middle-aged men in suits tell her to consolidate and refinance her debt when all that seemed to happen was she’d end up in more of it while they profited from it.
Her seminars and workshops are judgment-free zones made up of equal parts personal growth, rock concert, and love. She is hired to work with ordinary humans who want to achieve extraordinary things, and because of her track record helping people create a trajectory of success, the phrase she most often hears when people meet her for the first time is, “Wow. I thought you’d be taller.”
Check out her new book, NAKED MONEY MEETINGS: ENDING MONEY FIGHTS WITH YOUR PARTNER FOREVER: https://amzn.to/3LsRrLU
Find her on Instagram at @GetTheHellOutOfDebt, and you can see the students who are in the thick of debt rehabilitation or who got the hell out by searching the hashtag, #getthehelloutofdebt. You can also find Erin personally on social media @ErinSkyeKelly.
Facebook: Her Get the Hell Out of Debt community is second to none - they support one another, offer advice, vent frustrations, and celebrate wins - big or small. While our Facebook group is private, it is a major incentive to join the Get the Hell Out of Debt Course and/or buy the Get the Hell Out of Debt book!

189: Vienna Pharaon - Can you break family patterns and liberate the way you live and love?
Vienna Pharaon is a licensed marriage and family therapist and one of New York City’s most sought-after relationship therapists. She has practiced therapy for more than fifteen years and is the founder of the group practice Mindful Marriage and Family Therapy.
She received her master of science in marriage and family therapy from Northwestern University and trained extensively at The Family Institute, Bette D. Harris Family & Child Clinic. Pharaon has been featured in The Economist, Vice, and Motherly and has led workshops for Peloton and Netflix, among others. She currently lives in Upstate New York with her husband and son.
THE ORIGINS OF YOU is her first book, and it zeroes in on our Families of Origin, the early caregivers who provided the first lessons on everything from love and conflict to safety, communication, and trust. There’s no guarantee that the education our Family of Origin (FOO) provides us will be healing or even functional; to be sure, families frequently miss the mark in significant ways, creating wounds, beliefs, or behaviors that are reflected in the life choices or relationships we choose as adults. Vienna traces a direct line from present-day behaviors that limit us back to the family systems in which we were raised. But she doesn't stop there. She also:
- Unlocks a healing process to help us fully understand the family dynamics and dysfunctions that created what she calls “origin wounds.” We all have some version of these wounds; some are difficult to identify, and others can be hard to manage.
- Identifies the five most common wounds that derail us in subtle and not-so-subtle ways—wounds that, if left untended, can leave us questioning our worthiness; yearning to belong; longing to feel prioritized by others; unable to trust; or lacking safety. But our origin stories truly can be the road map to healing, once we’re willing to really look.
- Illuminates the practical work needed to heal them and leave behind the limiting beliefs and behaviors that don’t serve us through personal and client stories, tested frameworks for difficult conversations, and invaluable guided introspection.
- Teaches us vital techniques like how to pivot—that critical moment when we replace unconscious programming with a new pattern of behavior to better serve our needs—and to respond with understanding instead of with hyperreactivity, turning conflict into connection.

185: Bonner Rinn - Can disabilities empower incredible possibilities?
Bonner Paddock Rinn is the Founder and Chairman of Project Possible (PP), a 501c3 non-profit that serves children with disabilities. PP was established in 2009 to raise awareness and build and support early learning centers that provide services for children with all types of disabilities and their families so that they can live a life beyond limits all around the world. He began by raising funds to aid the construction of an early learning center in Orange County. The foundation has now helped the establishment of early learning centers around the globe, including Tanzania, Northern Uganda, Kenya, and Nicaragua.
PP promotes the idea that anyone can make a difference if they dedicate themselves to looking beyond their personal limits to achieve their goal, just as Bonner himself has done.
Team Jake was formed by the parents of four-year-old Jake Roberts, Steven, and Alison, to celebrate his life. Jake had severe cerebral palsy and passed away suddenly in his sleep in January 2006 at 4 1/2 years old.
When Jake passed away, Bonner experienced a lightning bolt moment that changed his life. He had just completed his first full marathon, the Orange County Marathon, raising $30,000 in donations for children with disabilities. This race, developing a close friendship with Jake's family, and meeting young Jake, fueled Bonner's ambition to be the first person with cerebral palsy to climb Mt Kilimanjaro unassisted in 2008. He set out on a mission to raise $250,000 to help provide the therapy needed for all the young kids like Jake.
Jake's legacy took Bonner on to his next and most extreme physical challenge four years later when he became the first person with cerebral palsy to complete the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in 2012, where he raised over $700,000. When asked what kept him going in the last 10 miles of a 140+ mile grueling race, he replied, "It's Jakey. That boy lives in my heart forever, along with all the other special needs kids out there."
All of Project Possible's Centers in the world are named Team Jake Centers, including our Team Jake Virtual Center, an online training and support for organizations and families worldwide.
