EP #70 Who are you Black Man. The human being.
Fight the Funk Podcast Episode #70
Who are you, black man? Update on where I'm at and sharing some of my writings while absorbing all that I've endured over the past few years of this culture war.
Now more than ever, I believe any black male that makes it to a healthy old age is a miracle.
This episode is short and not just for black folks, but for all people on this journey of self-knowledge.

Fight The Funk is dedicated to exploring mental health, culture, and the world around us. To create an environment of openness and respect for every individual's personal journey with mental health.
Episode 68 This Life We Live
Its' been a while since the last episode.
A few of the topics:
- Finding myself being righteous in a cigar shop
- LGBTQ+
- Being psychologically tortured for being different
- Willie Lynch Document
- Bruces Beach
- Coops
What I’m about to say does not get in the way of putting my head down and building and creating. Hopefully, this just allows my supporters and followers more permission to openly continue to rock with me from all walks of life, even the secret celebs you know who you are.
And if I’m not for you, you are absolutely free to keep it moving. 2020, was month after month of psychological torture, mainly who I am as I am was painfully not excepted. It’s a dark tragic comedy to be stuck being you and you are being encouraged to be your authentic self.
I am Neurodivergent...autistically gifted I will not see it as a curse like I once did growing up. Punishing myself for being different. I am not in need of being fixed or broken in like an untrained dog. My mother's son. Fully aware of right and wrong. Have never had a drug problem nor committed a crime.
I do know shame and humiliation as someone who was a down-low black dude, publicly outed for my bisexual past, I’ll never be the same after that. Letting go of resentment. I will still speak on LGBTQ+ matters, not much because it’s not my passion. Exploring Mental health as a black male is my passion. I will still defend the rights of LGBTQ+ in the circles I find myself in.
Mainly because I have no filter. One truth that has been learned through all this. When you help bring powerful rich spoiled white males down, you don’t just walk away from that and think you're going back to living a normal life.
On a positive note: Discussing Coops and how they can help black and underserved communities.
Mandela Grocery’s Stores' vision responds to Dr. King’s call for creative job expansion: Jobs for the people in the neighborhood. Jobs that build income, skills, and community amenities. Jobs that function for our neighbors. Cooperative jobs can be jobs in various industries that are complementary and essential such as groundskeeping, design and building, food production, and food distribution.
Ep 67 The Freestyle
This episode is a few thoughts on politics on the local and federal level.
Nov 9, 2021 Freestyle

Fight The Funk Podcast #66
On this episode of Fight The Funk Podcast.
Sharing some basic thoughts on this Mon, November 1
I also speak on the passing of my Auntie. Sharing some of my influences on how I live my life such as The book #Essentialism and recent conversations I've had about "focus." What comes to mind is 2pac and Scarface hit song "Smile." Scarface says "A man without a focused life will drive him insane." Very important for men and women to work from a healthy place.
The main point of this episode. Amongst all the bullshit our leaders and people in our own world can stir up, what do we need to do to stay whole, happy, and healthy?
#64 Thoughts from Dave Chapelle's Special: The Closer
In this episode, I discuss Dave Chapelle's comedy special called the closer it's considered to be very controversial but I think there are important takeaways that can foster real conversations.
Love it or hate it, it's has made people talk about their discomforts with gender and sexuality within different communities.
#65 DTC/ Liberty EcoSystem
In this episode, I talk about the efforts of a group I work with Down Town Crenshaw which is part of Liberty EcoSystem.
Down Town Crenshaw looks to stabilize a black community that has sustained decades of casualties.
The American profit margin and our American identity from the foundation have utilized black pain. The black community is only 9% in LA county as well as similar numbers around the nation.
In our efforts to purchase the Crenshaw Mall we were able to raise over $100 million, joined with 300 plus organizations, lead marches, rallied, and fought tooth and nail. At the end of the day, our bid was not honored, in spite of having the best bid. The history of redlining and the desire to not see “communal black wealth” remained a strong force against black liberation. The fight will continue, in the pursuit to purchase the mall as we once again “need solutions that match the scale of the problem, within the city of south-central and every black neighborhood around the country.
We look to create lasting relationships and strengthen ties as global citizens.

#63 Gentrification: The perpetual state of David and Goliath.
Episode #63 Maagic Collins Show
Gentrification: The perpetual state of David and Goliath.
Cali Recall Sept 14th, 2021, this Tuesday
Fight for the John Luis Voting Rights Bill
Come on and vote...dude.
“Housing is Key.” Renters and Landlords can close the gap of the back rent caused by the Pandemic.
Downtown Crenshaw Mall Sold to David S.
Gentrification as a whole
For this episode, I’ll be using source material, “Malcolm X, Gentrification and Housing as a Human Right, found on Truthout.org. Written by Jon Bartlet who is the executive dir. Of the Metropolitan Tenants Organization Based out of Chicago.
A passage from Mr. Bartlet’s article is below:
In 1823, the US Supreme Court in Johnson v. McIntosh legitimized the concept of ownership through conquest. In Johnson, the Court held that “savages” (the Court’s term for Native Americans) had no right to sell or control the land because the land was “discovered” by settlers. Only the US government could give Native people the right to sell or transfer the land.
“Ownership through conquest.”
The outside investors then develop the land to fit the needs of the downtown elite. They build new and high-cost apartments and high-rises and demolish and get rid of properties suitable for people of more modest means. Many of the first people to move into a changing neighborhood are described as “pioneers,” the same term used to refer to the initial invaders of North America who imposed the White man’s ways on the Native peoples.
This means families who have often lived in these neighborhoods for decades are forced to relocate. Tenants in particular, because of the lack of secure tenure, face an onslaught of economic pressures to move. Outside investors will often close buildings and evict all the tenants as they develop properties to cater to wealthier non-community members in an effort to get them to move into the community. Tenants are then forced to find and move into an ever-shrinking supply of affordable housing.
At the same time, landlords are increasing the rent as the neighborhood becomes “hot.” In the end, the vast majority of the tenants will be forced out. It is beyond their means to resist these economic forces on their own.
For the full article and list of laws such as the three listed below click the link: Truth.org
- Laws to limit foreclosures: Banks and other agencies ought to be
held accountable for their actions in creating the housing crisis.
- Laws to end lockouts, self-help evictions outside of the legal
system: No tenant or homeowner should lose their home
without due process.
- Mandatory inspections laws: Municipalities and other
government agencies need to be responsible for ensuring that all
residential properties meet certain codes of health and safety.

#56 Fight The Funk Podcast w/ Jonathan Wicks
In this episode, I have a conversation with Jonathan Wicks about his work as a Clinician | Music Educator | Founder | Entrepreneur
I talk to Jonathan Wicks about his work as a clinician.
A clinician is a health care professional who works as a caregiver of a patient in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, clinic, or patient's home. Clinicians work directly with patients rather than in a laboratory or as a researcher. A clinician may diagnose, treat, and otherwise care for patients. We also talk about the social justice movement and how it affects his life. Humanity is more connected than ever before. Travel has made the world feel smaller, as modern planes ferry hundreds of people to the opposite side of the globe in less than a day. The internet — and the ability to chat in the high-definition video — allows us to interact with one another and connect with people we perhaps would have never met under different circumstances. This has also allowed us to rally around causes we care about, raising awareness and helping to change society for the better.

#43 Continuum of Learning and Teaching
#43 Fight The Funk Podcast
We are all on a continuum of learning and teaching.
Such as learning how to balance social ills and still finding ways to enjoy life.
Two main ideas were explored in this episode:
- A term called ‘trauma-free Blackness.’ phrased termed by John Black, a CNN writer.
One of the examples he uses is the Black Joy Parade in Oakland, an annual celebration that takes place during the winter.
Making trauma-free blackness a norm. That is part of the work.
Exploiting, enjoying black life is often like binge-watching trauma porn.
- Don't Fox News yourself.
As the research and learning take place it is important not to Fox News yourself.
You can create an inner narrative of dark and gloom. Preach fear to yourself.
Something to monitor while going over information to solve problems.
- Information informs how to make adjustments.
- Too much information leads to paralysis, over action.
- Being emotionally addicted to toxic news stories erodes your wellbeing.
If too much emotion is added to information it becomes toxic...
= Manic episode
= Depressive episode
= Disorienting
= Numbness
In a Global world, an information age?
How do we allow information to affect us? There is no easy answer.
It is one of the challenges of a lifetime. Like everything else in life.
The challenge to find balance.

#41 The Great Opportunity
The inauguration is coming up. Another stressor.
On top of a pandemic, the homeless crisis, white supremacy, great depression levels unemployment, the silent mental health crisis, and overpacked hospitals.
Are you doing your best? Then follow that up with some grace for yourself.
Below is some of what I discuss:
🎧 The Civil Rights Leaders gave their life to deliver the blueprint to this generation.
🎧 We've always thought famine and sickness were abroad, but it was really in our mind the whole time.
🎧This generation has a chance to mold something that is truly theirs.
🎧What comes from us can't be appropriated.
🎧 If you are a Youth fighting for black lives to matter your elders look up to you with joy. It's a dream to see you thrive.

#39 What Is Winning
📻In Society winning and losing can become an unhealthy obsession.
🎧"How" you win and lose is just as important as playing to the best of your abilities.
🎧Politics become unhealthy win it is turned into a sport. "What team are you on?"
🎧Turning it into a sport doesn’t challenge your politicians to represent you. If they know you are simply on their team because of the party you undermine your own vote.

#38 Better Dayz
I believe better dayz are coming.
One of my favorite books by Malcolm Gladwell was the tipping point.
At some point we will break the back of this virus, we just need to keep buying time.
The more the vaccines are administered, the more we start to turn the corner.
🎧 Pray for LA - A prominent black lives matter activist started a pray for LA campaign for all the lives lost.
🎧 Youth - guilt/shame - Your not alone
🎧 Physical humor use to be the funniest thing to me until my mother's stroke.
🎧 Lock in on that Andy Duframe vision. Keep chipping away until we reach better dayz.

#33 Obstruction of Resources
This episode like many falls into that trap of pointing to the dysfunctional elements of government made disturbingly clear during the 2020 pandemic. At one point the Hill reported, the head of the Senate had an 18% approval rating. 2020 leaves no dought that the rating is well earned.
🎧 What this episode taught me. Don't eat chips and stop drinking the fizzy water before tapings.
🎧 Goal Setting: Further breaking down goals as a continuum, not a random list thrown together every year.
🎧The Anatomy of telling women or a black person to smile. Similarities and subtle differences.

#32 New Decade
First Live Streamed Podcast of Fight The Funk.
This Podcast is about setting goals. Real goals, the ones that stick to the bones.
🎧How do a passion and a vision turn into reality using goals?
🎧Black Lives Matter 2021
🎧 Entertainment and sports pick back up. Black athletes. Politicians. Humanize these people.
🎧Fantasy football is one of the best examples of dehumanizing people.
🎧For your elected officials to be successful you still have to be locked in on to what's happening in government. All ways doing my part so people have the same opportunity and more. Whether you participate or not the decisions made in government will affect you.
🎧Normalizing shit that should not be normal.
🎧Our government dealing with Covid-19 is like B-Ball player Shaq trying to guard a top point guard in his prime.
🎧Kwanzaa: This day is about faith. In self. Community. The personal spiritual journey.

#13 Sugar & Media
This episode is about the preservation of our mental health.
Below is a message from Nami:
Message from Nami California: America is experiencing a mental health crisis. Recent reporting from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that mental health and suicidal ideation has worsened since the onset of COVID-19, with one in four (25.5%) young adults reporting they had seriously considered suicide in the previous month.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (currently 1-800-273-8255) provides 24/7, free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The Lifeline consists of a network of more than 170 independently operated local and state-funded crisis centers across the U.S. The Lifeline is effective in reducing suicidal and emotional distress, and in 2020, is estimated to reach 2.5 million people. But people experiencing mental health or suicidal crises need easier access to Lifeline. 9-8-8, an easy-to-remember three-digit dialing code for mental health emergencies, would help those in crisis more seamlessly access lifesaving resources.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
🎧 When social media was introduced to the general public, suicide rates and mental health challenges went through the roof. These are magnified now that the pandemic has made it necessary for more people to be online. Social media is the 7-Eleven of mental health challenges.
🎧 The situation is similar to the introduction of sugar to the general public which created a wide range of ongoing health problems.
🎧 Hotline 988 would be a national lifeline similar to 911. This number is easier to remember and would provide quick access to services for those in mental health crises.

29# Achievements and Setbacks
Happy Kwanza - December 27th - Self Determination
Talked a bit about how people are finding ways to grieve for their loved ones. Writing the last words they were never able to share. Sharing funny memories.
The Oakland Post had a story about Good News. The good news stories you don't get to hear around the nation. Refreshing, one story, in particular, was about the youngest incoming mayor Brandon Scott of Baltimore, the youngest Mayor since 1904. He is rocking a huge afro, something straight out of the '70s.
I also talked about the government during the time of the taping. No plan for Federal Unemployment, no stimulus, the eviction moratorium would be ending Jan 1, and a pending government shutdown was coming. By the end of this taping, the new Stimulus package had been signed.
Be well.

🎧My uncle had 32 trees planted in his honor.
🎧Breaking down the natural law of being active and patient.
🎧What destroys organizations? (Making sure everyone gets their voices heard)

#26 Knowledge Is Infinite
In this episode, sharing some thoughts.
🎧 Why do I take a class even if most of it is repetitive? It's to learn that one thing.
🎧 Defund The Police: If we still don't know it's about reallocating funds to the community that needs it most. Then there is no debate to be had.
🎧 The push back should be against defunding public schools.
🎧 The Biden tape: There was a tape after the election where Biden is going off on some pretty mild-mannered Civil Rights leaders in Geirgio who raised concern over Biden's cabinet picks.
🎧 What Black Lives Matter has done to preserve black life should never be overlooked. Without Black Lives Matter, countless more black children, women, and men would have been regularly taken with no one ever knowing, going back to how things have always been in black and brown neighborhoods. You can absolutely hate some of the tactics but they have saved so many lives and brought attention to the atrocities that should have never been normalized.

#25 Three Months
This episode was dedicated to a friend of mine who was always upbeat even towards the end of his life. Pastor Bill rests in that eternal light.
These next three months will be hard but it doesn't have to be devoid of joy and happiness. Loving on the people who make you feel whole and healthy.
Rededicating self to practices that have work in the early parts of this year of 2020.
Finding three-month challenges that will bring you to a new year.
Help your family and neighbor through the holiday season.

#24 Conversation w/Renu Beniwal & Melissa Morgan
This conversation was dope.
Renu Beniwal has traveled to Haiti as a Program Development Consultant for Grace International. Providing resources and monitoring about 100 small businesses. She helped build up programs such as the "Year Up Chicago." Since this year has taken up being a plant momma. Check out Renu's work on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/renubeniwal/
Also on this episode, her long time friend and mine, Melissa Morgan. Founder of AllThingsBlack.us Melissa comes with just as much experience. She is all things communication. Has worked in anti-bias education, nonviolence, diversity, and inclusion, hate crime education, racial justice, youth empowerment, the arts, technology, marketing...I'm leaving stuff out. 🎧2020, not a total waste. Lessons learned: slow down, reinvest in family and community, prioritize, take care of ourselves. What do we hold on to from the old “normal” as we create the new “normal.”
🎧Online is good for reaching out, connecting to others. The downside, we are in the dark ages of social media, with so much access with no regulations. Need to examine how it impacts the mental health of individuals and society as a whole.
🎧Protecting joy: Plants, gardening, walking outside, cooking, sleeping in, no commute, finding the funny, having good people close, mindless comedies, being around people who like to laugh and have a good time, dogs, animals. A gift to people for next year: Listening. Connecting. Love hard.

#23 Conversation w/Elizabeth Leiba
Had a chance to sit down with Elizabeth Leiba.
Liz is a Professor at Brown College - she brings a refreshing approach to the classroom. Calling it the "flipped," student-centered classroom. The professor gives mini-lectures, then students work in groups to gather and present information, rather than using the old school, “Sage on the Stage,” where the professor talks and the students take notes. She is also a Co-host of The EdUp Experience - An exploration into the many facets of the educational system. I ask her the most important question, What are her thoughts on "I'm black-kady-black-black."
🎧 The goal is to create power, confidence, knowledge, for a collaborative learning environment.
🎧 Address the unique needs of adult learners who have a different set of challenges and stresses than students right out of high school.
🎧 The future of higher education: remaining relevant, best practices, accessibility for students from marginalized backgrounds, diversity, on-line learning, how to make higher education affordable.
