As kinesiology grows as a profession it is important to learn about how other Kinesiologists are changing their practice, moving into different positions or working with other professionals.

Are you a Kinesiologist interested in Research?  Learn from one of the original Kinesiologists in Canada who helped shape the profession of Kinesiology.  

In this episode, we talk with Fergal O'Hagan and learn about his journey into become a kinesiologist, the importance of our profession and how he has helped shape the Trent U kinesiology program.  Fergal is one of the OG Kinesiologists in the business. His perspective is very unique starting all the way back in 86' where he was involved in the discussion of regulating kinesiology as a profession.   

Fergal O'Hagan is a Registered Kinesiologist, academic and researcher. Fergal completed a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education (Saskatchewan, 1984), Masters degree in Adapted Human Biodynamics (McMaster University, 1987), Ph.D in Exercise Science (University of Toronto, 2009), Post-graduate Diploma in Work Disability Prevention Research (Universite de Sherbrooke, 2011) and postdoctoral fellowship (Social Science and Humanities Research Council CURA program).   Practicing in the field of occupational rehabilitation with a range of clinical populations for 25 years, he successfully developed, implemented, evaluated and managed rehabilitation programs for acute and chronic disability. He is presently on faculty in the Department of Psychology at Trent University. O’Hagan’s research focuses on psychological and social process affecting work disability and the reintegration of workers following sickness absence.

Director and Kinesiologist at Breast Rehab located in Ottawa, Ontario. Madison graduated from the University of Ottawa in Human Kinetics and has been a registered member of the COKO since October 2018. Madison is very passionate about women’s health which helped lead her to finding a unique clinic opportunity with Breast Rehab.
In this episode, she tells why she declined all her grad school offer letters, what helped her decide women’s health was her niche, and the most important thing to do as a new kinesiologist.

Francesca is a Registered Kinesiologist and Online Trainer with over 14 years experience in the fitness industry. Francesca holds an honours degree in Kinesiology and Health Science from York University, and she has taken numerous courses since in the areas of postural restoration, assessment, and disability management/return to work planning. Francesca is also the owner of FitFX Training where she trains clients online. In this episode I interview Fabian Rayne. Fabian is the President and CEO of FabYourLife Inc., a multidisciplinary health and wellness company in Markham, Ontario. Fabian graduated in 2000 with an Honours Degree in Kinesiology At Western University.

Fabian has been practicing as a Registered Kinesiologist with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario since April 2013. Recognized for his leadership and dedication to his field, Fabian has served on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Kinesiology Association. Fabian is also bringing his knowledge to the classroom as an Instructor at the University of Guelph-Humber.

Michelle Jacobs, R. Kin - Family Health Team

Michelle Jacobs is a R.Kin and a CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist working for the Kincardine Family Health Team (KFHT). Michelle graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Kinesiology (Honours) in 2013 and then Niagara College graduate program Exercise Science for Health and Performance in 2014. It took a few years for her to get where she is at the KFHT and each step taught her something about what she wanted out of her career. Her role at the KFHT is to provide exercise prescription for the variety of rehabilitation programs offered as well as run health promotion programs. Working with such a wide patient population challenges her to use many of the skills she has learned over the years. She finds the work very rewarding when her patients make a lifestyle change that helps to manage their overall health. Michelle has truly found her dream job!

In this episode we talk about being "more than an assistant", helping the community at large and moving outside of the box.

Richard Bucciarelli, R. Kin - Sports Scientist

Richard Bucciarelli, MS, B.Kin., R.Kin, CSCS, CSEP-CEP, USSF “A”, is a professional fitness coach, sports scientist and coach educator, and the owner of Speed Training, a sport-specific strength and conditioning company in Toronto. Richard has worked at some of the highest levels in the sport of soccer, both in Canada and internationally, including the Canadian National Women’s Soccer Teams and the Toronto FC Academy. Richard is presently completing his PhD in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences with a specialty in biomechanics of speed and acceleration training in soccer players, at the University of Guelph (expected 2021). He also works as a Professor in the Fitness and Health Promotion program at George Brown College, and in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Guelph-Humber.

In this episode, we talk about the missing piece in sports science, why he still has his R. Kin designation, and how the best investment you can make in your career is education.

Jane completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo. After receiving her degree from University of Waterloo, she continued her education with Certifications from Roy Matheson and Associates, Gray Cook and the Functional Movement Systems, and the Center for Research on Pain and Disability to name a few. She’s spent the last 25+ years working with thousands of patients from a variety of backgrounds. In this episode, I interview Sarah Snable, R.Kin - Certified Professional Ergonomist and Co-Owner of PROergonomics. Sarah co-founded PROergonomics Inc., an ergonomics consulting firm, which was established in 2013. She has more than 14 years of experience working as a consultant and as an in-house Ergonomist/Ergonomic Specialist. She has expertise in conducting physical and cognitive demands assessments (PDAs/CDAs), office ergonomic assessments, job matching assessments, and delivering ergonomics training to support her client’s ergonomics needs. Sarah holds a B.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo and a certificate in Environmental & Occupational Health from the University of Victoria.

In this episode, Sarah tells us how she fell into an ergonomics role, the process to become an Ergonomist and the stigma still associated with being a kinesiologist.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Ottawa he began his company Fitness for Freedom, a mobile Kinesiology company. Jonathan operates under the following principles: to care, be honest and treat people the same way he would like to be treated. In this episode, I interview John Bocti, Registered Kinesiologist and founder of Kinnected Chain. John has been a member of the health sciences community since 2007. In college he learned how to assess human movement and create goal centred programs. Throughout his continued education he was involved in undergraduate thesis work, exploring the science of human movement, and how to better maintain and enhance it. From here, while completing his graduate degree, he explored cognitive decline among the older adult population and the underlying effect of this on human health and movement. John is focused on enhancing athletic performance, along with maintaining independence and mobility among the older adult population. His approach to each person is individual, ensuring the appropriate plan is set to help you reach your goals.

In this episode, we discuss his humble upbringing, how a reference letter changed his path, and talk about one of the scariest moments in his career as an R.Kin.

Alis Bonsignore, R.Kin - Exercise Physiologist

In this episode, I interview Alis Bonsignore, R.Kin and Exercise Physiologist at Cleveland Clinic Canada. Ms. Bonsignore obtained her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Guelph-Humber. While there, she discovered cardiac rehab during a placement and was inspired by the way that exercise and nutrition could alter the state of a disease on a physiological level and help individuals with chronic condition achieve better health outcomes. She went on to complete her Master of Science at the University of British Columbia in Cardiovascular Physiology and Oncology. A lifelong learner, she is currently pursuing her PhD from the University of Toronto in an emerging field of “cardio-oncology.

In this episode, Alis tells us the number one thing to learn if you want to go into this field, imagining Kinesiologist's in a health liaison role and how you don’t need to be working as a front-end therapist to be an R.Kin.

Katie Fair, R.Kin - Adult Recreation Therapy Centre

In this episode, I interview Katie Fair, a Registered Kinesiologist in the community with ARTC. ARTC or Adult Recreation Therapy Centre is a day program for adults and people with health concerns, who need physical, social, cognitive or emotional supports. This includes therapeutic activities for adults with various physical challenges, frail, socially isolated, and those with early stage Alzheimers or dementia in a group setting. Katie runs classes and exercise programs as the Kinesiologist.

Her experience began in her youth with Horses and interest in how they move. After being told she wasn’t smart enough to go into Kinesiology and a volunteer experience because of her uncle, she now has been an R.Kin for 6 years. Her experience started began like any R.Kin, in a physiotherapy clinic, where she discovered aqua therapy. 

In this episode we discuss how Victoria jumped into the deep end and made a splash creating Pure Movement and how volunteering helped her decide what she didn’t want to do.

In this episode, I interview Ryan Wight, Registered Kinesiologist and CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist. Ryan has a lot of Kinnections so bare with us as we list them. Currently, Ryan works as a supervisor for LIV North INC in Hamilton while co-owning a boutique fitness and rehab centre called PEAK Conditioning & Rehabilitation Inc. He has experience teaching at Fanshawe and Brock, being a Kinesiologist or Ergonomic specialist at various places and of course some personal training throughout. Currently, Ryan sits on on the COKO Council for District 5 and the Health, Wellness and Fitness Program Advisory Committee as Chair at Mohawk College.
