Talking with...WB Welch!
*****
About WB Welch: While she's spent most of her professional career in marketing and customer communications, WB has had many hobbies over the years, including photography and natural skin care and holistic remedies. She studied and became certified in personal training and corrective exercise, and she’s always been an adrenaline junkie. She’s been bungee jumping, skydiving, owned a Yamaha R1 for a time (before it was so woefully stollen), and she was getting pretty decent at staying on top of a skateboard before chronic illness slowed her down a little. She’s currently working as an email developer while writing in her free time. She often focuses on the darker side of human emotions, striving to write honest fiction with texture. Publishing credits include Blood Drops, The Last Letter, and Wet Water, as well as “Baby Muncher” in the 16th edition of Thrice Fiction. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Southern Methodist University.

An Intro to "Pulp" Fiction
In addition to being the title of a much-discussed movie in the mid-1990s, "pulp" fiction was a type of literature that was popular in the early 20th century. I discuss some of its unique characteristics and explain why its influence is still felt in the work of many contemporary writers.

Stream of Consciousness Writing
I mentioned stream of consciousness in passing during last week's discussion of Modernist and Postmodernist literature. This week, I describe this technique in more detail, and explain how it can work well in both fiction and nonfiction writing.

The First Amendment, Continued: Defamation and Libel
To expand upon what I discussed in last week's episode, the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution places limitations on certain types of speech. Another type of speech that is not protected is defamation--in particular (for writers, anyway), libel. I discuss the elements needed for a defamation suit, distinguish between public and private figures, and explain the "actual malice" standard for libel set forth in the landmark 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan.

A First Look at the First Amendment
We've been hearing a lot lately about the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution...but let's face, it, the First Amendment is never not relevant, so all kinds of writers should have some understanding of what is and isn't protected under it. However, it is also frequently misunderstood, so in this episode, I provide basic information on the "freedom of speech" clause of the First Amendment in relation to several recent events.

Gothic Fiction, & Lots More...with Cassandra L. Thompson!
On one of the most, umm, eventful evenings in recent history, I spoke to Cassandra L. Thompson about gothic literature, founding a publishing house, and a number of other topics.
About Cassandra:
Cassandra L. Thompson has been creating stories since she got her grubby little hands around a pen. When she is not busy managing a house full of feral children (human and canine), you can find her wandering around in cemeteries, taking pictures of abandoned things, exploring lonely patches of woods, or in the library doing research on her latest obsession. But mostly she is staring off into space, imagining other worlds and things that go bump in the night.

Memoir: It's Not Just about the Writer
Memoirs are more than just first-hand accounts of the writers' lives, and involve more than stringing together a series of random happenings. In addition to describing some common features of memoirs, I explore the benefits this type of writing has for writer and reader alike.
