Episode 57 - Coach Tineisha Hatten with Cheerportation
In this episode, I interview Tineisha Hatten, who is a Head Tumbling Instructor and a full year and Rec Program Coach for Outlaw Cheer and Dance in Massachusetts. Tineisha is also the owner and operator of Cheerportation. We discuss the inspiration behind creating her business, advice she would give anyone looking to create a career out of their passion, and her favorite and most challenging experiences as a coach.
Tineisha Hatten - As an athlete, Tineisha cheered for 10 years starting in middle school all the way through college. She also did 2 years of all-star cheer. Since graduating college, she has been coaching various all-star, college, and high school teams for 6 years. She ran into an issue with a school not recognizing their cheer team as a sport and not being able to use the gym for practice space or use the school transportation resources to travel to a practice facility. In 2022, she created Cheerportation LLC to help cheer teams have an extra resource. Cheerportation also offers services to parents who need rides for their athletes anytime throughout the season in the New England Area.

Episode 55 - Building your Feeder Program with Coach Catharine Dittrick
In this episode, I interview Catharine Dittrick, an Early Childhood Educator and the Head Junior Varsity Coach at Milford High School in Michigan. We discuss how to instill a growth mindset in a youth level program in order to build future generations as well as why it is valuable to develop a strong sub varsity program.
Catharine Dittrick - Catharine began as a middle school cheer coach in Michigan and moved to coaching at the youth level to help develop and grow the Milford Program, her Alma Mater. Catharine's family also grew up in the Milford program. She is going on her fifth year and is the head JV coach at Milford High School. She has experience in choreography for D3 schools in her area and has coached tumbling for their rec program. Catharine continues to help out at their middle school to make it a smooth transition for athletes as they head up to the high school level. The Milford Program had not been to regionals since 1989. In 2020, the long awaited return to regionals was broken and this year (2023) Milford is top 10 in the state consistently week by week. Their goal is to make the state mat once again, as it has been 34 years since the program was able to do so.

Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I answer the following question:
"I am going to be a head coach next year and this year at my school we added a Pom team. We’re struggling with it I feel like. They do all the material we do and do all of the cheers. There is no difference. No kickline, no “Pom” dances. No nothing.
The coach has come off like we need to do everything together and In my new role I want to be able to set a boundary. What are normal pom/cheer games like? I can’t even remember when I was in high school.
Are we suppose to be next to each other at all times? Should it be okay for my girls to do something different then pom does?"

Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I answer the following question:
"We’re taking our squads to UCA camp in a few weeks. This is my first year at our school and want to add a fun tradition while at camp. Not really sure what I’m looking for, but maybe something special you do for your team while you’re there or a continuous game you play throughout camp with some type of winner at the end of it. Any suggestions?"

Curious to see if anyone else experiences this and how do you handle."

Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario:
"How do you and your assistant coach divide responsibilities when there is no jv squad? I held the jv/assistant position in our program for 5 years before moving into the head coach position this past year. When I was the assistant, my head coach and I had a much more cohesive dynamic and shared vision for our program than my assistant and I seemed to have this year. (My assistant was a first year coach, and there was a lot of over and under-stepping.) Trying to make sure I can provide my assistant with a clear list of expectations and duties so that things go smoother next season."

Episode 24 - TAKE 5: Building Confidence in Coaching Stunts
Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario:
"I’m a fairly new HS assistant coach and this will be my first normal cheer season. The head coach has me run practice sometimes, so I’m wondering how I can be more confident in coaching my girls when they are stunting and I’m alone with them? I’m terrified someone is going to get injured on my watch. I cheered in high school and part of college, but the squad I coach is way more advanced than the squads I cheered on. I feel inadequate and insecure when it comes to stunting. Any tips or resources to gain confidence are most welcome!"

Episode 22 - TAKE 5: Tryout Options
Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario:
"I would love to get some opinions from other coaches. This is my first year as a Varsity head coach and will be my first time doing tryouts. Here are my options. What do you all do? We have a small school with multi sport athletes. TIA
Option 1: Hold a two day tryout clinic and an official tryout afterwards. Set a certain score and if you don't make that score you're not on the team, no exceptions even if you've cheered for years.
Option 2: Do not hold a tryout in April/May. Invite everyone who is interested in cheer to all spring/summer events and have a tryout in August allowing those candidates to build their skills over the summer.
Option 3: No tryouts at all, everyone can join"

Episode 18 - TAKE 5: Academics and Attendance
Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario:
"Looking for some advice… my team’s practices last week went amazing and then all of a sudden… I get an email from one of my flyers that she is having a “family emergency” Thursday night at 9:30 pm. I was a bit skeptical, but the show must go on. I readjust my whole routine Friday before the game, but my captains came to me letting me know that they were confused about the girl’s absence as well.
Turns out today that she wasn’t having a family emergency (as per my captains) and her parents held her out of the game because she has “bad grades.” I’m kind of at a loss for what to do, but it seems like I can’t count on this kid, which is frustrating because she is one of my better flyers. I know school comes first, and I’d be happy to help her out if needed, but this has messed up the entire routine and stressed everyone else out. What would you do if you were me?"

Episode 16 - TAKE 5: Choreography Tips and Adding Game Day Elements
Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario:
"I am in desperate need of some help!! This is my first year coaching. I don’t have much cheer/dance experience AT ALL. my squad is medium-ish (12 girls)…but all are beginners. These girls are incredible and I just adore them. We are only doing sideline this year because we lack the experience. They get better and better each day! Here’s my problem. I don’t know the first thing about choreography!! I’ve watched hours of videos and I don’t really want to copy some else’s work…..is that even allowed??? The girls want to do a halftime routine for basketball homecoming. Our school song (although not a super big deal at our school) is the notre dame fight song. I’d like to put together a game day routine for my girls to do along with that song and make it more of a big deal at our school. What do I do??? Where do I start???? I’m so overwhelmed just thinking about motions, counts, steps…….PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!"
