Ep. 18 | A Maestro’s Melodies

Ep. 18 | A Maestro’s Melodies

Critics describe Tomáš Kačo's genre of music as "sui generis" – referring to his highly original way of blending classical, jazz, and traditional Romani music. His journey from an out-of-tune piano to a grand Steinway at New York's Carnegie Hall is akin to the American dream. On that journey, apart from the necessary good luck, has been diligence, persistence, curiosity, and courage.

EP. 7 | Mandatory Korean Military Service As a Musician (ft. Benny Char)

EP. 7 | Mandatory Korean Military Service As a Musician (ft. Benny Char)

Benny Char is a Korean American songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and spent most of his life in Seoul, South Korea. Benny graduated from Seoul International School and is currently attending Berklee College of Music as a Contemporary Writing and Production major. With his partnership with CJ E&M, Benny released his debut album “GENESIS” in 2016.  Random question..! Do you ever wonder what's going on inside fellow Korean men's heads when they’re about to leave for mandatory Korean military service? This has been a rule for Korean citizens (men only) for many years now, but I personally feel that there are some unspoken truth/voices about how these men really feel about it. Especially as a musician, it can be worrisome to be on a pause with their music for a couple of months. That’s why I’ve invited Benny Char to ‘grab coffee’ with me to discuss about his mental health of his preparation before, during, and after his service. Find out more behind the scene and how this mandatory service will change affect his music career. Thank you for joining us for coffee ☕

EP. 2 | YouTube just for fun? SIKE. (ft. Serin Oh)

EP. 2 | YouTube just for fun? SIKE. (ft. Serin Oh)

Starting a YouTube channel is not always an easy process. It takes lots of courage, time, and consistency but it’s a lot of fun! And with this experience, it allows you to go beyond in learning more about yourself than what you think 😉

Born in Suwon, South Korea, Serin Oh moved to Ohio with her family at the age of six. Growing up in church, she was surrounded by gospel music in her formative years. During her time at Berklee College of Music, she dove further into her passion for jazz and r&b, whilst also rediscovering her Korean roots through the lens of K-Pop. This led her on a search for a sound that would allow her to express the duality of her identity through her music. However, it wasn't until she moved to Valencia, Spain for a postgraduate course that her search finally came to fruition. Here she met her long-time collaborator and sole producer Luke Helder - a film composer hailing from the UK, and together the duo began working tirelessly on bringing the musical world of serin oh to life. Serin released her first single, shower thoughts, in June 2020. Serin's second single, other woman, was placed in Spotify's renowned New Music Friday editorial playlist in 8 countries, in addition to RADAR Korea. Her next single, mm+i, releases 27/01/21.

Come join Serin and me for coffee to hear why we both started doing YouTube and what our journey has been like in this field by far ☕

EP. 1 | Young Adult Life...Pandemic...What Now? (ft. Dorothy Chan)

My first "Let's Grab Coffee" EPISODE 1 is out ft. Dorothy Chan. She's from Hong Kong and now lives in LA. She's a talented musician and vocalist, who has a band with her boyfriend called SUNDIAL (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2DT...). We each shared about our experience living in LA, early-stage young adult life, and how our music careers are being affected by this Pandemic.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dorothy Chan is a graduate from Berklee College of Music with a bachelor's in Electronic Production & Design. Dorothy began classical piano at age 5, then vocal training during early high school. At 15, Dorothy was exposed to audio engineering and began sequencing productions on Logic and Ableton for songs she wrote. Since then, Dorothy has worked with record labels in the music industry like Heroic Recordings, Seeking Blue, and Create Music Group. Her knack for writing infectious melodies has helped deliver viral hits like sundial's "Your Text", "Dive", and "who cares!", which have charted on major Spotify playlists and US Viral 50.
