The Power of Awe: Microdose Mindfulness in Less than a Minute a Day to Transform Your Life | An Interview with Author Dr. Michael Amster

Have you ever wanted to meditate but thought you could not quiet your mind or just can’t find the time, or maybe you have tried and it just hasn’t “worked?” You’ve been frustrated because  you understand that science has proven the physical and emotional benefits of mindfulness, but you just can’t get over this hump or plateau.

Today’s guest, Dr. Michael Amster, has the solution–and it takes less than a minute a day. With this practice, the practice of accessing awe (as in wonder), Dr. Amster and his colleague, Jake Eagle, found an easy, and remarkably simple, scientifically-proven practice to overcome burnout and anxiety, ease chronic pain, find clarity and purpose–and a sense of calm and acceptance with what is, all the while savoring what is–in less than a minute a day. They call it The Power of Awe, which handily, and helpfully, was recently published and available as a remarkably accessible book, with science, observations, history, and practices.

When Dr. Amster is not blazing the trail for new mindfulness practices and conducting scientific studies that back their effectiveness, he’s a pain management specialist, leads meditation practices, and engages in the power of awe every day.

In this interview, we dig deep into the Power of Awe, its benefits, and how you just might tap into what is arguably the most powerful tool we can tap not only to ease this daily practice of being human, but to learn to experience life as it truly is, full of wonder.

Self-love is a superpower: How to be body-positive and take charge of health in teens and adults with Dr. Karla Lester

Self-love is a superpower: How to be body-positive and take charge of health in teens and adults with Dr. Karla Lester

Usually, we don't think of love or self-compassion when we think of the actions needed to have a healthy body. If you're anything like me, you think of pulling yourself up by the boot-straps, or hunkering down, or really "following the rules." Turns out, that's part of our culture too. And this toxic sort of thinking has seeped  into how our teens see themselves too. So-called "almond moms" (and dads) think they're helping their teens be healthy (aka attaining "thin privilege") when the real culprits are shame and often a health condition called insulin resistence.

In comes Dr. Karla Lester, board certified pediatrician and life coach and founder of IME Community, who is working tirelessly to teach kids--and their parents-- to love themselves as they are and also take empowering action to improve their health.

Dr. Karla and I talk about how she found her purpose in teaching self-love and healthy habits, and we delve into everything from "thin privilege" and toxic media messages to body positivity and the science around insulin resistance, and living a healthy lifestyle--physically and emotionally.

You’ll want to listen to this episode, about how Dr. Karla  has her own lived experience with weight, and being a human, making mistakes , developing her own self compassion and working to help others do the same. It’s a message of humanity, a hard look at media and our own complicity in the childhood obesity epidemic. And an educational look at weight gain, insulin resistance, and shame—and mostly, it’s a message of hope.

Living the Big, Full, Happy, Joyous Life, Alcohol Free | A Conversation with Kay Allison, Author of Juicy AF*(Alcohol Free)

Living the Big, Full, Happy, Joyous Life, Alcohol Free | A Conversation with Kay Allison, Author of Juicy AF*(Alcohol Free)

What is it like to live Alcohol Free? Whether someone has a problem with alcohol, or just wants to see how their life might change by being alcohol free--or if you're just "sober curious" and you see that more and more people are starting to live alcohol free, this conversation is for you. Heck, even in Portland, Oregon, where I am--beer haven USA / IPA capital of the world--a duo of women developed an app to track and discover all the AF hotspots in town (Olivia & Sarah Sears). Suddenly, and wonderfully, people are experimenting with what it means to be AF.  For me, livening alcohol free has led to nothing short of miraculous. I thought I was living wooping it up—alcohol gave me the courage I never had. I thought I could say the things I really meant. That I was creative, funny, smart. And all that was true—but it was not alcohol that gave me that. That’s just who I was. And it was alcohol that actually covered all that up, and I didn't even know it. So, finding a way to live alcohol free? That, my friends, was the keys to the kingdom. That has been responsible for all the happiness, love, joy, and success in my life. And that is what today’s guest is here to talk about. Living a Rich, Full life. Alcohol Free. Author, coach, and successful entrepreneur, Kay Allison , author of Juicy AF (alcohol free) is an award winning innovator who helps professional women break their drinking habits and get free from booze, free from shame and free from anxiety. She was a professional success as a Sr. VP of a global ad agency when she first when AF. After Kay Allison went AF, her life unfolded exponentially. She increased her income 600% and married the love of her life. She’s free of shame. And wildly happy. Her book, Juicy AF* (*Alcohol Free) Stop The Drinking Spiral. Create Your Future, and her course “30 Days to Freedom for Professional Women” provide a step-by-step guide for high-achieving women. This interview is a game changer. We talk personal. We talk real. And Kay sets out the 5 spiritual laws from her book Juicy AF that guides women to a life that is not only AF, it’s a life that is truly free. Who Am I? What's the Cure to BurnOut and How do I Find Purpose? and Other Important Questions--and Answers--with Mayda Pac, International Coach to Professionals and Other OverAchievers

Who Am I? What's the Cure to BurnOut and How do I Find Purpose? and Other Important Questions--and Answers--with Mayda Pac, International Coach to Professionals and Other OverAchievers

Who am I if I’m not a lawyer, a CEO, a doctor, in finance, a chef, a restauranteur? That’s the question that so many of us have asked ourselves—and are terrified of the answer. But how can I go on, day after day, with so much stress, so much pressure—and not just pressure the job puts on me, but the pressure I put on myself to succeed?
In so many cultures—including western culture—there is emphasis on career success, and we have learned—and given kudos for—to work harder and harder and harder.
And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with working hard or being ambitious or wanting to succeed. But where things unravel is when we focus so much on this success, so much on our jobs, that we lose our sense of the whole self, lose our relationships, maybe even lose ourselves.
And that’s what happened to today’s guest, Mayda Pac. She spent 16 years in high finance, from Paris, to London, to Wall Street. And she excelled. And she pushed herself to the point of ignoring cancer for 2 years and passing out on the street. And even that did not stop her. She still had deals to do.
It was only when she had a moment of clarity that she took the terrifying leap of leaving her career in high finance, knowing what to do with her life at all. But she knew that if she didn’t take that leap, she might not be so lucky next time.
Listen in to this conversation, where Mayda candidly tells her story and how she ended up where she is today, along with many, many pearls of wisdom that will undoubtedly resonate for you today.

Don't Be Scared. Be Prepared | An Inspiring Conversation with Dane McCormack, a Regular Guy Who Lost His Memories only to Regain Real Perspective & Love of Life

Don't Be Scared. Be Prepared | An Inspiring Conversation with Dane McCormack, a Regular Guy Who Lost His Memories only to Regain Real Perspective & Love of Life

What could be more humbling than losing one’s memories? Not knowing who you are, really, and what you’ve done? Not recognizing faces? That could reasonably strike terror into most people—quite understandably.
And yet, for Dane McCormack, a Tasmanian-born and raised man living on mainland Australia, it never occurred to him. Instead, despite having lost most of his short and long term memories to cancer and its subsequent brain infection, amongst other devastating losses, Dane methodically went in search for his memories. And he did so through writing.
He spent 12 months in the hospital where he was given 24 hours to live several times. Despite losing the toes off his right foot, 20cm of his bowel, his long and short term memories, his sense of smell and taste, he did not lose his sense of humor.
His story is one of inspiration, and as he explained about his incredible journey, “I'm a lot worse off because of it, but I'm also better because of it.” Listen in to this captivating story about a regular man who lost his memories, only to gain the gift of slowing down, being present, and accepting—and loving—life as it is.
As Dane says, “Don’t be scared. Be prepared.”

Riding the Wave of Mindfulness with Sarah Ariaudo, Author, Speaker & Leader Supporting Cancer Fighters & Their Families

Riding the Wave of Mindfulness with Sarah Ariaudo, Author, Speaker & Leader Supporting Cancer Fighters & Their Families

For me, there is nothing quite like a deep conversation with a fellow mindfulness practitioner and teacher. And that is exactly how I felt—and I think you will feel—in this conversation with Sarah Ariaudo, author, speaker, mindset coach, and creator of the Mindful Based

Healing program to address the mental and emotional

well being of cancer fighters and their family.

After ignoring her own health for the sake of her dedication to work, she was forced to confront her situation—and found yoga, and mindfulness as two core practices that brought her back to health, and brought her back to her whole self.

Her practices are accessible for the everyday person, and are created to support cancer fighters whose lives have been disrupted by all the anxiety, planning, financial and family stress this disease causes. She’s a leader in this area, forging new avenues for science-based practices that, if she has it her way—and she should—would be available to every single cancer patient, for free.

What really struck me in this conversation, though, was her utter humility, and how she walks her talk by using mindfulness in her every day life, and especially with her family.

If you’ve ever wondered about mindfulness and thought you could not access it, I get it. But you’ll walk away after this podcast with the hope—and the tools—to give it a try, one minuet at a time.

Finding Her Purpose in Finding Food Freedom for Herself and Others: A Conversation with Melissa Rohlfs, Board Certified Health Coach

Finding Her Purpose in Finding Food Freedom for Herself and Others: A Conversation with Melissa Rohlfs, Board Certified Health Coach

I know. I know. Just what you wanted right before the holidays! That's exactly why I chose to publish this podcast about eating well post-Halloween, and pre-Thanksgiving here in the US.

It's because I needed to be reminded of eating well, for health and well-being--and where eating unconsciously, or to "eat my feelings" backfires.

Welcome to this honest and practical conversation with Melissa Rohlfs, a Board certified health and life coach, who understands all too well what it feels like to stuff feelings, treat emotions with the sugar demon, and how out of control and serious this really can be.

And how it isn't our fault. How a multi-billion dollar industry has gamed us into eating more. And more importantly, how we can give ourselves the gift of eating for health and well-being--and the grace to be human.

We talk about some of the solutions Melissa has found over her years as a health and life coach, and she lets you in on them right here, on the Fully Mindful.

In fact, that’s kind of her style—generous and real. She offers a free guide to body freedom and peace, and if you’re interested, follow her on instagram and set up a call with her. You won’t regret it.

Empathy, Self-Compassion & Self-Care: Coach Kristin Taylor's Journey into the Dark Night of the Soul (and out the other side)

Empathy, Self-Compassion & Self-Care: Coach Kristin Taylor's Journey into the Dark Night of the Soul (and out the other side)

Have you ever felt like your mind was spinning out of control and you just thought that if things could just slow down, maybe, just maybe, you’d get a handle on things?

Or ever felt so disconnected from your body that you honestly felt like a head walking around on a stick?

Well, I sure have. And it turns out I’m not alone. And more importantly, there’s a way out of this morass that we get ourselves into sometimes. And even better? We don’t have to do it alone.

Kristin Taylor is one of the good people out there who know just the right tool to give you at just the right time to help us when we need it. With 20 years of experience as a coach and counselor, Kristin uses mindfulness, psychology, and somatics—along with her insanely beautiful soft empathy and her keen observation and intuition—to help us dig our way up and out and into something really beautiful.

And in this pod, she lets us in on a couple of these tools that we can use right away.

So, whether you're a coach who wants to learn from an exceptional coach, or a fellow human on the long journey into the night themselves, you'll want to check out this conversation with Kristin.

What I love about Kristin, is not only is she ridiculously well trained and educated in this stuff—she’s lived it herself. Which always, always earns credibility in my book. If you’ve lived it, you know it, and I’m ready and willing to learn from you.

So settle into this intimate conversation on coaching, mindfulness, body-oriented insights and self-compassion.

Everything is Impossible and Possible: A Conversation with Dr. Chris Willard on Mindfulness, Recovery & Presence

Everything is Impossible and Possible: A Conversation with Dr. Chris Willard on Mindfulness, Recovery & Presence

It's kind of fascinating how much we don't really know, isn't it? Sometimes, though, when we look back, we can't believe what we didn't see or appreciate. Imagine the surprise at being whisked away in your early 20s by your parents in an effort to save you from yourself and try to get you on the path sobriety, only to find yourself at a retreat with the great Thich That Hanh. Just let that gel for a moment. It's kind of like being whisked away to learn a thing or 2 about basketball when you've hardly played, only to find yourself at a basketball camp with LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Damian Lillard and Shaq. Or a writing camp to find Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami, and John Irving. You get the picture.

Enter Dr. Chris Willard, now a Harvard psychologist, author of 20 books including Growing Up Mindful and Alphabreaths--and soon out, AlphaBreaths 2. Now sober for decades, and trained in mindfulness and psychology, Dr. Willard talks early recovery, trauma, mindfulness, working with kids and adults, and how, as the title of the episode says, everything is impossible and possible, all at once.

Truly a conversation you won't want to miss. Plus, I promise to share the mix-tape Chris mentions near the end....as soon as he sends it!

The Only Way Out is Through: Former US Attorney, S Amanda Marshall,, Rising from the Ashes to Hope.

The Only Way Out is Through: Former US Attorney, S Amanda Marshall,, Rising from the Ashes to Hope.

“Yes there are 2 paths you can go on, but in the long run, there’s still time to change the road you’re on.” —led zeppelin. Haven't we all wondered what life would be like if we had made other choices?  Haven't we all felt, at times, a little like Dr. Jekyl, Mr. Hide?  S Amanda Marshall (Amie), former US Attorney for the District of Oregon turned lawyer for those of us who've hit our bottoms, been accused of doing perhaps worse, and those of us who need a true believer in our court, tells how her whole life aimed toward greatness, reached a fever pitch, and came crashing down all around her. Alcohol. Anxiety. Terrible mistakes. They nearly cost her her career, and nearly cost her family and her sanity.  But when there is an inkling of willingness to be pulled out of the pit of despair, a surrender to what is, and when one alcoholic identifies with another and believes for a moment that even they can be helped, the magic happens. And that is what happened to Amie Marshall.  We talk about what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now. And how surrender and humility combined with a willingness to believe and a whole lot of hard work, mindfulness, and self-care restored Amie to a woman of hope, a woman who gives, and a woman who is kind to others, to self, and who helps others climb out of the pit of despair and back into a life worth living. Debbie Harrell and The Secret Sauce of The Collective Good

Debbie Harrell and The Secret Sauce of The Collective Good

It's kind of crazy that we ever think we can do this thing called life alone. And yet we operate in this fantasy on the daily--with all sorts of negative consequences. We isolate. We fear. Or the opposite: We think we know it all, and well, we all know how that goes. One of the negative consequences of this "pull yourself up by the bootstraps---all on your own" mentality is that we kid ourselves into thinking everything is just fine, fine, fine (queue up Alanis Morisette for all you fell 90's music lovers). And this can make us numb to our reality. Until it all kind of falls apart. Turns out we can even be "fine" after something that we'd all agree is pretty traumatic. But at what cost?
In comes Debbie Harrell, resiliency coach with a hell of resiliency story of her own. Like me, and many others, she convinced herself that everyone was fine....until it wasn't. And when the reality of it all hit her, she re-awoke to something she's known all along: that we do not do this thing alone. And as f-ed up as the world can be, we can also do some pretty beautiful things together. And we're going to have to if we want this thing to continue. You're going to love this conversation as we get real about what happened and what life and hope and the collective good can do.

Repeatedly Dead Fred: The True Story of a Regular Man who Died 20 times and Found Recovery and Hope

Repeatedly Dead Fred: The True Story of a Regular Man who Died 20 times and Found Recovery and Hope

We're all going to die someday. It's this lesson of impermanence that none of us will escape. But imagine dying more than once....in one summer. And imagine that the medical experts you're relying on don't really seem to know what is happening with you, and you're not even sure they're actually listening. In comes Fred Rutman, a regular hockey-loving Canadaian man. An economics professor just living his life. And that is exactly what happened to him. Listen in on what he experienced, how he advocated for himself, how he recovered fully after one doctor literally threw a book at him--one that saved his life. Fred shares how he came to learn about and practice Intermittent Fasting--not to lose weight, but to recover from major cardiac events--and how this practice has not only led to full recover, but he's a better man with a better life. And he's helping others do the same. You bet your life, you won't want to miss this conversation. Katie Joy Duke: "Still Breathing," an incredible Journey of Love, Loss & Reinvention

Katie and I talk about her journey through the loss and grief to finding purpose, both in the loss of her first-born daughter, and in her continual reinvention after that loss and now on a journey of living with cancer. Katie is the author of Still Breathing, My Journey Journey with Love, Loss & Reinvention, a memoir about the loss of her first daughter, who she birthed stillborn at full-term, her transformation with her husband and family through that grief into becoming an author, an advocate, coach, and mother of Moxie-- who is vibrant and curious and who, in the most tender of moments, holds space for her parents' memory of Poppy. Katie, a former lawyer, found her purpose which she describes as "it always comes back down to one word, which is love. That is at the foundation of, of everything." Join us for this powerful conversation where we go deep, we go real, and we talk of loss, of love, of hope, and of purpose.  My path to healing was both long and winding. Eyeless Mind: The Incredible Story of a Blind Teen and His Family's Journey to Diagnosis, Recovery & Advocacy for CVI

Eyeless Mind: The Incredible Story of a Blind Teen and His Family's Journey to Diagnosis, Recovery & Advocacy for CVI

Stephanie Duesing, parent, author, educator and advocate, talks about the devastating discovery that her straight-A, water-polo playing, artist son at age 15 was blind--and had been his entire life without anyone, including him, knowing it. Stephanie candidly talks about this discovery, and her family's harrowing journey to get her son a diagnosis and treatment for CVI (cerebral-cortical visual impairment), a common form of visual impairment. We talk about how her son navigated exceptionally through life with the love and support of his family both before and after the diagnosis. We'll dive deep into her family's experience, how there were helpers along the way, and how trusting themselves and their love for one another supported them along the way. And we talk about how stumbling into what was a devastating discovery but catapulted Stephanie into advocacy in the CVI world, and how this experience forms the basis for her book, Eyeless Mind: A Memoir about Seeing and Being Seen, a must-read for anyone who suspects a family member or friend has CVI, or for anyone who must rely on self-advocacy to get the health care they deserve. Cover art by Stephanie’s son—it’s the cover of the memoir!

Everything Changes. Like All the Time. A meditation on the reliability of change.

Everything Changes. Like All the Time. A meditation on the reliability of change.

Oh our crazy thoughts! Wouldn’t it be great to shut them down, like even for a minute? While we can’t control our thoughts, we can be aware of them. And we can let them pass by. Again and again. Change is reliable and good. Can’t wait to practice with you.

Grounded and Steady: Be the Mountain, a meditation in groundedness

Grounded and Steady: Be the Mountain, a meditation in groundedness

It’s been a heck of a week. These happen all too regularly. Whether outside circumstances shake our worlds, or our own internal world is a little chaotic—sometimes we need to practice groundedness. Remember who we really are. Unwavering. Here. Now. This is a practice in groundedness.

"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)": Conversation with a Living, Working Poet, Michael P. Thomas

"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)": Conversation with a Living, Working Poet, Michael P. Thomas

All of Bob Dylan's fans will immediately recognize the title of this pod. And for good reason. Welcome, Michael P. Thomas, poet, editor, professor. A living, working poet whose poet-musician, Bob Dylan, is among the long list of poet-artists who moved him to pursue his purpose--to be a poet, and to bring poetry to the masses (because we need it). Settle in, get real with Michael P and me as we explore what it is to be a poet, a teacher, and to uncover your worth and find your purpose. *Uncut version: The whole shebang (even the recording blips and daughter's drums in the background, you know, just to remind you we're all human). And if this conversation got to you like it did me, please join Michael and I at Living with Poetry | Mindfulness in Everyday Life May 26 online | 4p PST and 7p EST https://www.eventbrite.com/e/living-with-poetry-mindfulness-in-everyday-life-tickets-328364796947?utm-campaign=social%2Cemail&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-source=strongmail&utm-term=listing
