#42: Leaderboard Blindness
What if you never looked at a leaderboard for an entire tournament? Or purposely had no clue what you were shooting for the day? I think we've all threatened to do this, or at least posed the thought experiment. But what if you actually did it? Baylor Head Coach Mike McGraw did it with his players, and he wrote it down in his book "Better Than I Found It". Listen up and learn. And maybe you'll be compelled to experiment for yourself! #40: How I learned Acceptance TWICE in one qualifier
I know I haven't been at this whole mental coaching thing that long relative to so many awesome, experienced coaches out there. But I do have quite a bit of playing experience under my belt. And in my own life I have learned that there is a very high correlation between high acceptance and player better. In this episode, I tell a story about how I learned acceptance twice in one competitive round of golf. Thanks for listening! For lots more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com. Have questions? #38: Your Practice Isn't Hard Enough
Just me this time, and I want to address how so many players are too casual in their practice relative to a tournament or competition.  If there is a dramatic difference in intensity from practice to tournament, then their will be a big difference in mindset as well. So here are some ways to give yourself the best opportunity to play your best when it matters. Thanks for listening! For lots more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com. Follow me! #36: Year in Review
This has been a really good year. When I look back over the whole year in retrospect it really looks like a roller coaster. A lot of lows where I was going through a slog of building a new business from scratch, waiting for new players to work with, and trying to think of new things to create and post. But so many highs, with a ton of newly learned skills, so many things that I created, and best of all dozens of people that I would've never talked to had I not started this venture.  So long story long, I have one person to thank for making this all worth it: you. Merry Christmas everybody! On this episode, I go through an excerpt of "Better Than I Found It" by Baylor Head Coach Mike McGraw. #29: Special Guest Boston Univ Coach Bruce Chalas on Perspective and Counterintuitive Thinking
I talk with Boston University Head Women's Golf Coach Bruce Chalas to talk about his philosophies on the mental game and how individuals improve differently from each other. Coach Chalas is a counterintuitive thinker, something that a lot of golf coaches aren't because they're afraid they might say something wrong. Coach Chalas is more interested in the long-term improvement of the person rather than the short-term good scores, yet his coaching has produced some awesome results! #27: How to Stop the Vicious Circle
You know the feeling. You're playing a round of golf. You're playing well for several holes. But inevitably you encounter some kind of difficulty, whether you hit a bad shot or you drew a bad lie in the rough or you have a long par 3 with a tucked pin or you're coming down to the wire at the end of a tournament. This happens pretty much every round. It's very rare that a round of golf goes perfectly smoothly from start to finish without any hiccups.  But that event happening doesn't define you. It's how you react to it that defines you. Thanks for listening! For lots more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com. Follow me! #23: What is Golf Mental Coaching?
I've learned a lot over my 16 years of playing competitive golf. From treading water from age 12 to age 25, to learning so much about myself under Robert Linville and Precision Golf School from age 25 until now at age 28, I have caught at least a glimpse of the value of mental coaching. And it helped me so much I decided to make it a life goal of mine to help other players learn the same things. #20: I Need to Evolve
Sometimes you have to look hard at yourself. Actually, all the time you have to look hard at yourself. You have to constantly deploy self-awareness against yourself.  And when I do, I realize that I have been leaning to heavily on my own past experience and not pushing myself hard enough to evolve my knowledge and improve. Like I said in Part 1, my goal is to normalize mental coaching to the point that going to see a mental coach is the default for a struggling golfer. So if I have an ambition as big as that then I need to get better. So this is me checking in on myself and telling all of you my intentions. Question of the day: What would it take for your default when you're struggling to call up your mental coach instead of your swing instructor? #18: The pressure of an entire country on your shoulders
On this episode, I compare my experience in my county amateur tournament to Rory McIlroy in the Open Championship 😂  But truthfully, being the local hero with the pressure of an entire country is serious pressure. And I know players that have had to deal with this. There’s a way, but it’s difficult.  *Shane Lowry is from Ireland, not Northern Ireland. Big difference. #16: Stick to the Process No Matter the Pressure
In the middle of the biggest moment of my playing career I abandoned my routine. The same routine that I had been diligently doing for over a year before it. I did this because I just wanted to be present and soak in the cool moment. But what I didn't realize was that sticking to my process was HOW I would've enjoyed the moment even more. Whatever process you might have, stick to it even in the biggest moment. Don't let your emotions or the pressure sway you. Follow me on Instagram! #14: The Next Shot
I challenge you to find me something more important in golf than the next shot. It doesn't exist.  Some might argue the last shot is more important, because where you are is a result of that shot. But that shot has no bearing on you anymore. There is only one shot that you can have an affect on. And that's the next one. If you have any questions I'd love to hear em! Seek out failure. Embrace it. Love it. Welcome it with open arms. Because failure shows you what you need to improve on. Where you haven’t been thorough enough. #10: Perspective
On this 10th episode of The Mental Golf Show, it's my anniversary! So it brings me back to the time when my perspective truly shifted. I used to play golf with blinders on, and nothing else mattered. But once I learned to release control and let go of the result (which for me came as a result of meeting my then future wife Kayla) I began to improve at a much quicker pace and play better and win tournaments. Your perspective doesn't have to come as a result of meeting your significant other, but in order to play to your potential your perspective must be right. You must have things in their proper place. #8: Gary Woodland Plays the Long Game
I've done a little research on Gary Woodland since he won the U.S. Open last Sunday. I didn't know this but in 2012 and 2013 he made a change to his agent, swing instructor, AND hired a new mental coach. These changes paid off relatively quickly by him winning some tournaments in the next year. But the big payoff took quite a long time. It was 6 YEARS before he finally won a major, despite being a regular player expected to win. He took his time, never lost his perspective, and it paid off. And I'm betting that this perspective doesn't change anytime soon for Gary. Subscribe and leave a review! Thanks for listening! For lots more, head to joshnicholsgolf.com. Follow me! #7: The Long Game
5 minutes? More like 5 years. Patience and playing the long game. I believe this is a universal principle for success. But obviously it is not a "get rich quick scheme" or "7 steps to playing better golf". And that's the point. It is a marathon, and it requires patience. Behind every great player is an anonymous stretch of hours and weeks and months and years of hard work. I'm reluctant to prescribe tactics and tips, but I am fully committed to pushing players and people into believing in core truths. Running a MARATHON not a sprint. Subscribe and leave a review! #5: Tiger's Win at the 2019 Masters
When you make mistakes, do you learn from them? Mistakes are inevitable. Everyone makes them. How people differ is how they RESPOND to their mistakes. Good players, mentally strong players, analyze their mistakes. They look hard in the mirror and figure out WHAT went wrong, WHEN it went wrong, HOW it went wrong, what that wrong feeling FELT like, and ultimately devise a PLAN to improve so as to correct that mistake in the future. This is what Tiger did coming off multiple close calls in the 2018 majors, and used what he learned to win the 2019 Masters. Waaaay behind the curve on this one, but the lessons and principles to be learned from Tiger's epic win are timeless. Hope you get some value out of it! Thanks for listening! #4: Increase Your Self-Belief
For most of my life I have fought low self-esteem, and I always seemed to have a string of thoughts running through my head like the ticker at the bottom of a news channel telling me self-critical lies.
