Part 1: How can the Hotel Industry survive COVID-19? With Rainer Stampfer from Four Seasons Hotels

Part 1: How can the Hotel Industry survive COVID-19? With Rainer Stampfer from Four Seasons Hotels

Welcome to part 1 of my conversation with Four Seasons Hotels President (Asia-Pacific Region) Rainer Stampfer

What we talk about:

  • 00:00 - COVID-19 & Hospitality Crisis
  • 08:48 - COVID-19 Scenarios and the Future
  • 16:34 -  Trust & Relaxing Holidays
  • 20:57 -  Travel & the Future

About The Four Seasons:

Four Seasons Hotels Limited, trading as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, is an international luxury hotel and resort company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Four Seasons operates more than 100 hotels and resorts worldwide. Canadian businessman Isadore Sharp founded Four Seasons in 1960. While a young architect working for his father, Sharp designed a motel for a family friend; its success motivated him to try creating his own hotel. He bought a large parcel of land in a run-down area of Toronto and planned a stopover for business travelers; the Four Seasons Motor Hotel opened in 1961. Four Seasons built more hotels, including the 1963 Inn on the Park, a $4 million two-story resort hotel in suburban Toronto that housed Canada's first discothèque. Upscale luxury became part of the brand when the company expanded to London. When a developer approached Four Seasons about building a hotel in London, Sharp planned it to compete with the city's old-world, elite hotels, such as Claridge's and The Connaught. The hotel opened in 1970.

Part 1: Youth Crime & Violence In Colombia - Catalina Cock Duque & Artist Juanes Fight To Save The Youth

Part 1: Youth Crime & Violence In Colombia - Catalina Cock Duque & Artist Juanes Fight To Save The Youth

👩🏻 Catalina Cock Duque, Co-Founder of Foundation "Mi Sangre" is with us today.

What we talk about:

  • 02:10 Colombia’s Youth Violence and Crime
  • 13:00 The "Mi Sangre" Program
  • 20:36 Becoming an "Agent of Change"

Mi Sangre was co-founded by Catalina Cock Duque and Music Star Juanes. Here his comments on the What and Why of the foundation in a Billboard article (Source = https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/6730154/juanes-philanthropy-colombia-mi-sangre-foundation):

As Colombia's civil war winds down, the Latin rocker, 43, shares with Billboard his hopes for his Mi Sangre Foundation, which has provided support for thousands of landmine victims since 2006.  The name Mi Sangre [My Blood] is inspired by the same sentiment behind my [2004] album of the same name: It’s about my children, my children’s children, my land, my roots. It’s what hurts and what’s important to me. When I wrote [2000’s] “Fijate Bien” about landmine victims, I was living in Los Angeles; I would speak to my mother every day, as I still do, about what was going on back home in Colombia. But it wasn’t until I went and talked to people face-to-face that I understood the gravity of the situation. I remember being invited to sing for wounded soldiers. Hearing firsthand the stories of people who had been directly affected by the conflict, it moved me to the point that I said, “I want to do something. “Colombia’s transition toward a peaceful society is our priority. The government is negotiating for peace with [left-wing guerrilla group] FARC. After nearly 60 years of fighting, so much blood has been spilled, but it’s a historic moment because we will be able to start a new chapter based on forgiveness and reconciliation.

Part 2: 21st Century Megatrends And How COVID-19 Impacts The Japanese Society

Welcome to Part 2 of: Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Sexism & The COVID-19 Pandemic

  • With Prof. Takeshita from the University of Shizuoka - School of Management and Information

What we talk about:

  • 00:00 Megatrends of the 21st Century: There are some megatrends that will continue to drive our post-pandemic world such as China’s economic power, coupled with sticking to old ideologies such as of human rights – as seen in the treatment of Hong Kong.
  • 11:13 COVID-19 & Social Impact
  • 13:51 Repatriation to Japan & Cultural Differences
  • 17:25 Japan & Culture of Apology: The Japanese culture is very conservative and the culture of "shame and apology" derives from the basic value of "wanting to fit in". According to surveys, despite having one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, the Japanese are amongst the unhappiest people.
  • 20:25 Key Learnings: Takeshita San tells his students to see the positive in the current crisis and make it an opportunity for change and growth.

Welcome to: Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Sexism & The COVID-19 Pandemic

  • With Prof. Takeshita from the University of Shizuoka - School of Management and Information

What we talk about:

  • 00:00 Intro
  • 03:03 Consequences Of Yoshiro Mori's Sexist Remarks: Since the recording on February 12, 2021 the President of the Tokyo Olympic Organization Committee, Mori, has resigned, due to international pressure after his sexist and discriminatory comments against women. This could be a circuit breaker for Japan's archaic and inequality-driven culture.
  • 14:05 Chances of 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021: What are the odds for the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 to be held in July of 2021, after having been postponed due to the Covid19 crisis? Not very high according to Takeshita San. Japan is estimated to have spent anywhere between 25bn and 35bn USD so far on hosting the Olympics, making it the costliest Olympics in history. Sponsorship money for the event stands at close to 6bn USD.
  • 19:00 COVID-19 & Economic Impact: The economic impact of not hosting the Summer Olympics could be severe not only for Tokyo but also for the Japanese economy itself.

Part 1: Electric Cars & Future Mobility - With fox e-mobility CEO Philippe Perret and Patricia Falco Beccalli

Part 1: Electric Cars & Future Mobility - With fox e-mobility CEO Philippe Perret and Patricia Falco Beccalli

Welcome to part 1 of my conversation with fox e-mobility CEO Philippe Perret

What we talk about:

  • 00:00 - Electric Vehicles Are Booming According to Philippe, the time – the ZEITGEIST - is right to move fully into the Electric Vehicle (EV) market. Apart from Tesla, there are now more and more car producers such as Ford and Volvo that announced to change their complete fleet to be powered by batteries only in a few years’ time.
  • 06:40 – Mia 1.0 vs. Mia 2.0 The Mia 2.0 is 95% recyclable and has zero C02 emissions. It is 950kg light, has a range of ca 200km, takes about 30 minutes to recharge, and is targeted at the inner-city area only – be it to B2C and also to B2B customers for the "last-mile delivery".
  • 09:10 – EV Branding, Pricing and Range
  • 17:45 – Small Electric Vehicles - The A-Segment EV sales have shot up almost 140% during 2020 in Europe and the global market share stood at 4.2% of all ‘traditional’ cars that same year. The biggest competitors to the European car market – also in the segment of EVs – are China and the USA. Despite this, many customers still have concerns regarding EV pricing and affordability, range and battery recycling.
  • 23:10 – Who buys Electric Vehicles?

About fox e-mobility AG:

The aim is to develop fox e-mobility AG into one of the leading pure battery electric vehicle companies in Europe. • 00:00 Intro
  • 00:38 What Voters Want?! Adam believes that Democracy and Politics are mutually EXCLUSIVE in both: philosophy and practice! Driven by this belief, Adam created MiVote with the intention to disrupt the established democratic process. He believes that the current process is flawed and does not allow for true democracy, i. e. creating policies guided by the electorate’s needs.
  • 11:18 The Role of the Media: MiVote helps governments to really listen to their voters using blockchain technology. It helps voters to gain information about proposed policies to make educated choices. The ‘4th estate’, the media, is playing a vital role in the democratic process but needs to be 1. Based on "truth and media laws" and 2. Diversification of media companies. Media monopolies endanger any democracy.
  • 18:55 Loss of Values & Diversity
  • 25:10 Adam's Key Insights: Adam thinks that the key to democracy and a good life: understanding that having the right to vote is a privilege, not to be afraid of people and their opinion and live ‘your truth’ and be authentic.

Part 1: Does Democracy Work? Our Conversation With MiVote Founder & Chairman Adam Jacoby

Part 1: Does Democracy Work? Our Conversation With MiVote Founder & Chairman Adam Jacoby

Welcome to: Does Democracy Work? A Conversation With MiVote Founder & Chairman Adam Jacoby

  • 🧔🏻 Adam Jacoby, Founder & Chairman of MiVote

What we talk about:

  • 00:00 - US & Democratic Process MiVote Founder Adam Jacoby and me, we're talking about the democratic system and the communication between voters and politicians. Adam tells us that just because we have an election, does not mean that we are living in a democracy. He questions how, for example, how a bi-partisan political system can actually ensure that the needs of the population are catered for.
  • 08:55 - Political Apathy & Outrage The main problem seems to be that the political system and politicians display the disability to really listen to the people. Polls are based on too few choices, created by a preconceived base. There is a huge need to educate and communicate better between voters and the political system. Many people cast their votes based on family traditions, some opinion leader in their friendship group, or their short-term needs, such as tax affecting their pay wallets directly.
  • 18:54 - What is MiVote?

Money is a tool to do many good things. It’s a fundamental enabler and especially women need to become smarter with money matters and start investing.
  • 10:00 Business & Women In Business Till today the business environment does not make it too easy for women to be successful. But many women stand in their own way and feel inferior, never enough, and are eaten up by self-doubt and overanalysis. Patricia's Perspective: My Conversation With "Trader's Weekend" Host Marcus Schult

How To Build A Brand (Part 2) - With "The North Face" Founder Hap Klopp

How To Build A Brand (Part 2) - With "The North Face" Founder Hap Klopp

Welcome to part two of my conversation with "The North Face" Sports Apparel Empire Founder Hap Klopp:This is what's in it for you in detail:

00:00 - Intro & Learnings In Building "The North Face"

For Hap failure is just a guide to finding the right strategy in achieving an objective. Failing is ok and needs to be embraced by a company’s culture. In order to have motivated staff, the best strategy is to hire motivated people.

07:00 - How to deal with failure

17:24 - What it takes to be successful

It is fundamental to listen to the team and stakeholders of a company in order to build a sustainable business. The fundamental reason why Hap sold The North Face in 2000, was that the business needed more management, fund raising and process than what he enjoyed. Creating new products and innovation are more of his interest.

20:48 - Leadership Advice

More about Hap Klopp:  In 1968 when Hap Klopp traded-in his corporate aspirations for the life of an entrepreneur, the support network for such endeavors was not nearly what it is today. However, Hap knew that he had what it took to run a successful business and lead The North Face for 20 years as his CEO. He sold the company in 2020 and today The North Face is valued at 13 billion USD.  After the passing of his father, Hap Klopp ran the family business while finishing his undergraduate degree at Stanford. He then went on to complete his MBA while orchestrating the sale of the business. After graduation, he went out to interview for positions only to find that no one was willing to hire him to run something – they all wanted him to start at the bottom and work his way up – which sounded pretty boring.

Hap’s focus was on consumer goods, marketing, sales and branding; which landed him an interview at Proctor and Gamble. During the course of the interview, he was introduced to the corporate mores that have pushed so many of us to pursue the life of an entrepreneur.  In short, P&G expected each employee to wear a white shirt and tie every day, to refrain from the use of nicknames and to dutifully mind their post until an opportunity for advancement was presented. It was settled, Hap was not cutout to work for anyone else, “I didn’t want any part of it…I didn’t fit into to it” – so he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey.

How To Build A Brand (Part 1) - With "The North Face" Founder Hap Klopp

"The North Face" Sports Apparel Empire Founder Hap Klopp shares his insights on how to build a brand. This is what's in it for you in detail:

00:00 - Building ‘The North Face’ Brand

07:00 - Fitness & Technology

17:24 - COVID-19 & Future of Gyms

20:48 - Successful Brand Building

Hap Klopp strongly believes that branding comes down to the true DNA of a business. It has nothing to do with a company’s name or logo. He describes what the  DNA of The North Face is. In order to build a long-lasting business, looking for ‘disruption’ is key. When setting off, Hap looked into other sectors and industries in order to make sports apparel more appealing, so that people would be able to stay out longer in ‘the wild’. In order to have and keep a motivated team, he strongly believes in hiring motivated people! Only motivated people are open to look for innovation. Digitalization is and will drive future trends and not only in the Fitness Industry.

Part 1: NGO Impact Investing & Smiling Gecko with Hannes Schmid & Patricia Falco Beccalli

  • 00:00 - The Start of Smiling Gecko
  • 07:20 - Supporting the RIGHT Way
  • 17:50 - Smiling Gecko Today & Education
  • 25:33 - Education is the Key

About Smiling Gecko:

Traditional NGOs tend to focus on a single topic (e.g. the construction of wells, the running of orphanages, medical aid, etc.) that they then roll out at various locations with similar needs. While this approach often brings tangible short-term improvements to people in the project area, it does not solve the underlying problems. Smiling Gecko has adopted a holistic approach aimed at improving the quality of life of an entire community through cluster projects. This vision guided the organization from its very start in 2014, and Smiling Gecko has since created many jobs and apprenticeships in agriculture, tourism and the catering industry, crafts, trade and teaching. Until 2025, there are many more projects in the pipeline, focusing on crafts and industrial production. As the cluster projects are based on commercially viable business plans, they are closely interlinked with the existing economy in the region. The individual projects are to be self-financing in the long run. They are to generate sufficient funds to run the local school and thus secure the education of the next generation. Cluster projects thus create model rural communities that operate as self-sustained entities and offer education and training for gainful employment in proper jobs. The cluster project model is of course transferable to other regions, and will make a substantial contribution to the sustainable growth of the Cambodian economy by 2050.

Part 2: NGO Impact Investing & Smiling Gecko with Hannes Schmid & Patricia Falco Beccalli

Part 2: NGO Impact Investing & Smiling Gecko with Hannes Schmid & Patricia Falco Beccalli

Welcome to the second part of my conversation with Hannes Schmid: Star Artist, Social Entrepreneur & Founder of Smiling Gecko.

The Timestamps:

  • 00:00 - NGOs and Human Capital
  • 10:13 - Impact Investing
  • 15:41 - Re-thinking Philanthropy
  • 19:30 - Who is Hannes Schmid?

Also, enjoy part one of our conversation here on the platform, too.

About Smiling Gecko: Traditional NGOs tend to focus on a single topic (e.g. the construction of wells, the running of orphanages, medical aid, etc.) that they then roll out at various locations with similar needs.

Vintro: Connect, Pitch & Pay with Noor Sugrue and Patricia Falco Beccalli

Vintro: Connect, Pitch & Pay with Noor Sugrue and Patricia Falco Beccalli

Welcome to my conversation with Noor Sugrue, founder of Vintro. This is what we bring to your table:

00:00 - What is Vintro?

07:52 - The Business Model

11:14 - How Does Vintro Work?

16:56 - What Entrepreneurs Need

23:31 - Deal Flow & Technology

32:48 - Mentors, Supporters & Success

37:52 - Key Lessons

About Noor Sugrue & Vintro in her own words:

It's 2017. I am sitting in my aunt's living room over the holidays, watching Shark Tank with my family. While we were all fixated on the amazing entrepreneurs we were seeing on TV, I started thinking about the entrepreneurs that didn't make it onto the show. Great ideas are born every day, from people who come from all over the world and from all walks of life, yet every day these amazing ideas die because their creators struggled to find the necessary backing.Historically, people who control resources have limited time, so they shut themselves off from people who aren’t in their immediate network. This makes getting in front of people who can back you incredibly time-consuming, beyond difficult, and wildly expensive.I started thinking about ways to use technology to break down barriers between people with powerful ideas, and the people who can help bring their ideas to life. Vintro was my solution. It's about leveling the playing field and providing equal opportunity for everyone. Our goal is to help you craft the future by eliminating unnecessary barriers to valuable resources.
