In the show this week ... lots of new releases. The opening gambit Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter - All Of My Friends Are Going To Hell (from her forthcoming album coming in october) jumps straight in as one of my favourite things of the year. Can't wait to hear the album. New releases are coming in thick and fast from the likes of Papernut Cambridge, Alien Nosejob, DJ Black Low and The Serfs. We spin Scottish outfit The Flowers all the way back from 1979 and their seminal tune, Life After Dark and my oldie discovery of the week has to be Black Winds by Little John & The Monks. Plenty of other unknown unknowns- enjoy.

Bottom of the Pops 111 16 January 2023 - The Ealing Club (London) Where The 60's Began & Jeff Beck Too
This week, quite by chance, i ended up down a dingy set of steps just around the corner from Ealing Broadway station at the door of the Red Room club formally known as The Ealing Club all thanks to my old friend Nell and the fact that the new Elizabeth line train decided not to stop at Acton on Monday afternoon
She said, i thinkyou may be interested in this spot it's where the earliest versions of the Stones & The Who played. We poked around for a bit and then hopped on the bus back to Acton.
The next day as i started to discover more about the club on the news came the story that Jeff Beck had died
Of course.... at the one and very same club Beck and the earliest incarnation of the Yardbirds played regularly... queue twighlight zone intro theme!
So here's a bottom of the pops celebration of all those who ended up the biggest and greatest were actually bottom of the pops themselves.
Because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know.

This week as we run up to Christmas they haven't been that many new releases of note so i find my self going down various musical wormholes as the night draws in at 4 pm , so, a bunch of half known and unknown oldies in the show with a few new tunes to boot and no Christmas tunes.. if i have to hear that bloody band aid warbling about them not knowing it's Christmas time once more i'll go insane.
Had it ever crossed anybody's mind that a good portion of the planet really doesn't care if it Christmas or not.
In this week's show you'll hear, amongst others, The Iftan Band from Mogidishu, The Warumpi Band, Jody Reynolds ( He wrote Fire of Love as covered by the Gun Club) Towns Van Zandt, The Velvets, The Clean, The House of Love, Booker T & The MG's, The Staple Singers and many many more in our version of a xmas mega special

We met many moons ago in the early days of his project to make a film celebrating the life and times of Sinn Sisamouth otherwise known as the Elvis Of Cambodia
See the trailer here. https://vimeo.com/577770320
Chris asked if he could contribute and here at Bottom of the Pops we jumped at the opportunity.
If you want to contribute too we'd love to have you on the show just get in touch at metalpostcard@mail.com

Bottom of The Pops No.79 22 May 2022
This week the dreadful right wing Morrison govt has been turfed out and Australia has a new labor leader who has fought all the labor culture wars since the early 80's and loves to do a bit of pub dj'ing and playlist making on the side . His choices can be a little obvious but who cares when he likes Radio Birdmen, The Style Council, The Falling Joys, The Saints and of course Nick Cave. So let's start the show with some of Albo's faves before we jump into the new shit.
Including Fat Earthers, Whitney K, Michael M, The Conspiracy, Tee Vee Repairman, Plastic Beatniks, Woog Riots, Occult Character & more

Because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; That is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know we don't know.
This week it is the 300th issue of our weekly BOP chart and newsletter so the show will be a bit longer because i feel like being self indulgent.
Saw the David McComb (Triffids) documentary "Love In Bright Landscapes" premiere on Friday night at the Randwick Ritz with an all-star band including Robert McComb, Evil Graham Lee, Mick Harvey, Rob Snarski & others following the film. Superb and rather sad but it reminded me how amazing the Australian underground music scene was in the early 1980's.
Also on the show a brand new tune from The Chats, some great French gear old and new, some Euro Synth Pop as well as Fleetwood Mac, Yazoo, Telephone, The Creature Comfort, Loom, Ron Trent, Trans X, The Comet Is Coming, Forest Swords amongst others.

BLAH

Bottom of the Pops - Nuggets of Spotify - Episode 69
I wanted, initially, to do a show that completely ignored the world around us. But i just can't bring myself to do that when songs just keep popping into my head, and, as with most of the time i've spent on the planet, music and writing are the only two things that can help me towards understanding things that can never really be understood.
As we say on Bottom of the Pops
Because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; That is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know we don't know.

The first classic 2022 album has been released by UK Act Yard Act so you'll be hearing from them, as well as from the improbably named Baron Von Toll Booth, 1977 Bristol Punk band The Cortinas singing about Valerie Singleton, remember when rabies was the top disease to get and lots more too.

Still pretty quiet on the new release front as everybody slinks back to work, as long as they / you haven't ben laid low by the dreaded global lurgi.
Sad news of the week is that we lost the great Ronnie Spector so something to remind us of her on the show. Also, somehow, back in the earlier 20teens Woodpecker Wooliams bypassed us.. I correct that huge mistake in this week's show with a track that has just been on repeat all week here at BOP towers. Also on the show some Stewart Lee simply because in this day and age we need him + tunes from Applebim, Pachanga Boys, Patrick Cowley, Fag Cop, Ed Kuepper and many more
As we say on Bottom of the Pops

Something old, something new, something borrowed etc etc... This week we start with a Cajun feature.. things were pretty dark down there back in the day. Also this week we have special guest the enigmatic Victoria in the house who selects some Sex Pistols, a banger by X Club and some luscious pop by Sydney artist Rainbow Chan. We also have the Cockney Rejects, remember the late great R Dean Taylor and as always a few more tunes to tickle the palate.
Don't forget share amongst your friends pets and family.

What's new this week on Bottom of the Pops?
The passing of Robbie Shakespeare the week before last doesn't seem to have garnered much attention, here at Bottom of the Pops we think that is madness and we'll try to redress the balance somewhat.
Otherwise, the usual fare, something old, something new, something borrowed etc etc

What's new this week on Bottom of the Pops?
Unfortunately it's death that kickstarts us into action this week Mensi is gone, Nesmith is gone and Andy Barker of 808 State too.
We pick up on some tunes we missed from 2021. The excellent m(h)aol from Dublin, London's Wu-Lu and also from the UK DJ Pitch and My Computer

Because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; That is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know we don't know.

Also, lots and lots of new releases and last week it was Spacemen 3 finishing off the show, this week I revisit the Beta Band and a miniscule amount of what happened afterwards. For me they were the ultimate 90's band.. not those showoffs from Machester, not those cheeky chappies from the south and not those hairy ones from the Pacific NW... The Beta Band had it all and like any perfect band (think Velvets, Triffids etc) they were never going to make it mega big.. they were just too good.

This week we've got it all. The fab Sister Cookie from New Orleans, an old house tune they used to play at Tonka parties at the Zap in Brighton back in the day. Kevin Morby covering a Bill Fay song in a playground next to the Seine. The Spacemen 3 covering the MC5. As well as a great tune about Koko the Gorilla from Mosco and song that sounds like it could have almost been on Dylan's Desire and that's only the half of it.
