Movie Geek & Proud: A Movie Podcast

By Movie Geek & Proud

This show reviews movies good and bad, old and new, of all genres. Hosted by Rob, a movie geek who loves going to the movies. Most of the films reviewed will come from my unconventional personal collection as well as films you don't see get much attention or love with a motto: There are no such thing as a "guilty pleasure" film. Be Proud of your taste in movies. I want to prove my theory that every movie has at least one fan.

Ep. 111: Inception

Ep. 111: Inception

When you see the name Christopher Nolan you think brilliance, excellence, genius movie maker. Some would say that Inception is the example of a perfect film. Can Nolan do no wrong? Who makes the criteria of what a perfect film is? Did you even understand Inception by the end of the movie or did it just sound like it knew what it was talking about and you went along with it? Also, that ending! Thoughts? We cover all that and more in this rewatch review of the film to try and break down all its layers and if we still think it holds up today. I brought along a huge C. Nol fan to help review inception. I hope you all enjoy our conversation.

Ep. 109: Drop Dead Fred

Ep. 109: Drop Dead Fred

In March I think of Green and with that said, it makes sense to compliment our last episode of The Mask with another crazy and wacky character in green DROP DEAD FRED. Who didn't want an imaginary friend when they were little and if you didn't, this movie watching as a child definitely made you want an instant best friend. Watching this as an adult now, whoa, what a change and that is where this conversation stems from. Such a serious approach when taking all of this in, Suzy and I couldn't help but dive real deep into what was going on with Elizabeth and determine if this is a universe with imaginary friends or is this a metaphor for mental illness, trauma, depression, or maybe even both.

Ep. 106: Who's That Girl?

When you think of a Madonna film she has starred in or appeared in, I bet you this is the last movie you would think about let alone even have heard about ever in your life. That's what our podcast is for. Give you insight on the films you may have forgotten or don't know about and this is one of those titles. This review is for those who actually know this film and enjoy it but don't talk about it. We are here for you. If you haven't heard anything about this film, give this a listen so you don't have to watch it and find out one of the wackiest films she has ever been in and in my opinion one of the funniest. This should not be a guilty pleasure film. If you enjoy it be proud of it.

Ep. 105: Donnie Darko

Ep. 105: Donnie Darko

You thought Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal was a time loop mind fuck, check out his first trip down the pivotal time portal rabbit hole with Donnie Darko. Along with my friend Suzy, we dissect this film down to its last image from beginning to end to maybe finally make some sense as to what this movie was telling us. To make sense of the two universes, the time travel, the rabbit, and why I am so obsessed with him. Donnie Darko being one of my favorite movies of all times is finally getting the rewatch and the attention it deserves. If you also had feelings about this movie and still couldn't put your finger on what was going on, you might gain something from this conversation. 22 yrs. later, lets talk about the enigma that is Donnie Darko.

Ep. 104: Labyrinth

Ep. 104: Labyrinth

Say it with me MovieGeeks, "You have no power over me." That one line Sarah just can't seem to remember. Well, Suzy and I recall this line as well as our favorite songs and other tidbits that brings us joy while watching this Jim Henson film. Join us in a conversation that celebrates this classic with appreciation for its practical effects, puppetry, risk-taking, and all around unique and kind of dark film for kids. Would you have been happy with this film if it had someone other than David Bowie? How does this film work today? Was this a real place or did she dream it all? We talk about all of this and more in this latest Rob's Rewind to see if this movie still belongs on my shelf.

Ep. 101: Sister Act 2

Digging up an old review from back in the day. In fact, this was the last review i recorded before hearing about the pandemic. My last review where my guest for the review were in person with me. So not only are we reviewing a film to see if it holds up, ill be listening to a review to see if what we said still holds up. I along with two other friends revisit Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit just a month short of its 28th anniversary. Let's join the sisters in song and revisit a new generation of singers to form a new choir. Since I own this film, I will also be checking to see if this movie stays on my shelf or get tossed.

As you heard from our last episode. Noah was reminded of his favorite movie "Pleasantville" and I made a point that i would love to see how that movie holds up. We made a point to watch and review that movie and this is the outcome. Enjoy our review rewatching a story that touches on the subject that hits a little close to home but also enjoying some light-hearted fun and the good ol' days of classic black and white television. Noah of course had to come back again to talk about his favorite movie. How does this movie hold up today on the subject of race without hardly to no people of color to tell the story? Let's find out.

Relive the 80's, the fashion, and the brilliant comedic chops of Shelly Long. Find out which Girl Scout Cookie we favor, our memories of the cookie time song, and all the celebrity cameos we spotted in the film and much more.

From now until the end of August, there will be a new episode every week watching and reviewing different scenarios and locations of what and where you would be doing and going for the summer. This is a collaboration with the podcast Radical Retro Rewind Podcast. Ep. 90: The Baby-Sitters Club (1995)

This is a summer camp job like no other. 7 girls trying to make bank. They are in it for friendship and that paper. How do you handle two birds with one stone. Back in 95 there was work ethic and these girls known as The BSC knew exactly what needed to be done. We revisit the Baby-Sitters Club from 1995. Joining me is Ryan taking a break from Crystal Lake to review this with me as this is his first watch of the film.

Ep. 87: Holes

Ep. 87: Holes

There are kids that choose to go to camp and there are those that are forced to go to camp. Let's take a trip to Camp Green Lake, where there are no trees and not even near a lake. Reviewing the detention camp in the movie Holes (2003) starring Shia LaBeouf in his first feature film. This is also a first watch for me but I brought along David who is rewatching this and has also read the book. Can digging holes give you character? How does this movie hold up? Did I like it after my first watch? Find out in our review and hear a couple of summer camp stories from our guest.

Ep. 85: Sleepaway Camp

Ep. 85: Sleepaway Camp

Heading back to camp for my next destination and at Camp Arawak there is no picnic at the park. You have bees to worry about, sketchy staff members, and some campers who don't take shit from anyone. Sleepaway Camp is up next and with me to review the film is Drew from the Reel Feels Podcast. We give our thoughts on how this film compares to actual camp, discuss that amazing twist, and play FlickSwipe Horror Edition.

Ep. 84: Adventureland w/The Last Summer (2019)

Already scared from the oversexed band camp, I am going back to the city and see what its like having a summer job that you don't want. Try doing that job as a carny in the 80's. Ep. 72: Scrooged

Ep. 72: Scrooged

After almost a year on hiatus, I have decided to come back to the podcast grind and entertain you with my unorthodox taste and film and to continue to prove that every film has at least one fan. Things are a little different this go around as you will hear Rob do more solo and personal reviews but continue to review films with friends.

Rob's Rewind is an episode theme where I rewatch films from my collection to see if the film holds up and still belongs in my collection. To stay on the shelf it has to score 4 or higher out of 5. Anything below, it goes in the bin. Here is one of my beloved annual traditional holiday movies i watch around Christmas time. Scrooged starring Bill Murray. For those who enjoy a little grittiness, anti-Christmas feel to their movies, this episode is for you. Also, get a quick review of films that I have watched during quarantine in a new segment called Quarantine Quickie. Today's Quarantine Quickie is on the film Freaky (2020). I hope you enjoy this solo episode of Movie Geek & Proud. See you at the movies...Someday.
