S2E11 - FINDING NEMO & DORY: Swimming Through Stigmas
Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.Â
This week on MHM we are joined by a special guest to discuss the Disney/Pixar movies FINDING NEMO & DORY!Â
HB, LB, and Jenny discuss how 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory' address the stigma around mental health and disability, while also emphasizing the importance of self-healing, self-discovery, and empowerment through characters like Marlin, Nemo, and Dory.
Questions, themes, and topics we touch on include:
- Disability rights
- Trust
- Community
- Genuine kindness
- Overcoming self-doubt
- Perceiving others & oneself
- Post-traumatic growth
And more!
âHi friends! My name is Jenny, Iâm 32 and live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my partner and pup. Some fun facts: I love coffee, my favorite place is Monterey, CA, and Iâve spent eight years of my professional life working in academic libraries.
Iâm a big fan of Disney/Pixar, and an even bigger fan of disability rights and raising mental health awareness. I feel these topics are often misunderstood and stigmatized which only perpetuates the cycle of isolation and harm. I love that MHM is utilizing something many of us love (movies) to discuss a variety of topics that many of us may find difficult to talk about.
Thanks for having me and I canât wait to dive into this movie with you all!â - Jenny S.
You can follow Jenny on Instagram @alwaysgrowing_alwaysenough, where she shares her findings on learning to navigate new pathways in mental health and life while raising awareness about topics such as OCD, cPTSD, Migraine, Grief, and more! Go give her page a peek, a follow, or any kind of support!Â
Jenny was kind enough to provide us some resources on navigating disability rights! Check them out here:
Person-first vs. Identity First Language
Models of Disability (this concept really changed my perspective and was totally new to me even with all my experience with people with disabilities. I realized how outdated my understanding of disability was).
Defining Barriers
âAssume That I Canâ ad
Interesting because it really challenges stereotypes and preconceived ideas of what disability means.
(I can see this in Finding Nemo with how Marlin treats and talks to Nemo)

08. POCAHONTAS: The Nuances of Disneyâs CharacterÂ
Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.Â
This week on MHM looks a little different. HB & LB wanted to talk about Pocahontas and while she is considered a Disney Princesses â and is definitely an empowering Disney character â we know that the Disney movie is nowhere near the true story of Matoaka. So, out of respect, we arenât going to do a full, traditional episode.Â
After some discussion between us and feedback from Indigenous folks and friends, we understand itâs hard to navigate the nuance of this colonized, whitewashed story. We had talked about maybe bringing on an Indigenous Disney fan to discuss the movie but then also received the feedback that could be seen as asking for emotional labor. But we fully and completely recognize the Disney-fied character has been empowering and inspiring to many.Â
Itâs not easy to separate and compartmentalize the Disney movie and the true story. But as delicately as we can, we'd like share what we like about the Disney character and empowering takeaways we may have noticed from the movie.Â

Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.Â

Fantasy First has a variety of characters, but their most popular and most booked are their princesses! Her favorite is Cinderella and we had a really good time debunking some myths about this misunderstood princess.Â
We talk: breaking cycles of abuse, the power of kindness and friendship, subconsciously internalizing problematic messaging, and most importantly, LB finally gets to dispel some of the common misconceptions about Cinderella as a âdisempoweredâ princess.Â

Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.Â
This week on MHM we talk all about the main characters of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with special guest Abelle! Abelle is a queer non-binary person whoâs also a lifelong nerd, artist, and fan of all things spooky. Theyâre also a giant animation nerd who absolutely loves geeking out about what makes it such a unique medium for storytelling and expression. We are so excited Abelle was able to join us for this discussion.Â
We talk about the more problematic areas of Hunchback as well as reasons we love the three main characters - who all serve as the damsel in distress of this story at some point throughout the film. Some themes that come up in our conversation include religious trauma/upbringing, racism and unconscious bias, manipulation/abuse, and jealousy/lust. Is this the DARKEST Disney Movie?
