Zoom Out - How 7 Days as a Lumberjack led to Clarity & Gratitude

Sometimes we get caught so caught up in the daily grind that we forget to take the time to take a valuable look at the journey we've been on and how far we've come. If you haven't done this is in a while, make sure you do. The clarity, perspective and gratitude it will bring you is invaluable. Listen to how 7 days cutting down trees on the Thruway was the perfect way to clear my head and prepare for what's next.

Navigating Major Transitions w/ Chris Niemeyer

I'm excited to interview one of my dear friends this week. Chris Niemeyer has been married to his wife for 21 years, he's a father of four and has a successful Real Estate business. Chris was the valedictorian of his high school and was forced to leave the stage before his speech by his principal because they wouldn't allow him to speak about his faith. You won't believe what happened. He is no stranger to difficult transitions in life and career. After building a thriving travel agency over a 14 year period, he suddenly lost over 95% of his business during Covid. The real estate business he runs today is nothing short of impressive.  Today's conversation is filled with wisdom and inspiration that will spur you on in life and business. He also shares his journey transitioning from 20+ years in the corporate world to a full time coach and business consultant.

He shares practical ways a leader can uncover blindspots and become a better leader immediately.

I asked him a tough question on how to craft a clear vision when you're not sure what you want and what God wants and how those two things intersect. His wise perspective helped me find more clarity on how to move forward and I know it will help you too.

We also talked about what it means to experience true freedom in your life and work. The conversation was dynamite.

  • Creator of Rock Retirement Club, an online community providing education, tools, and support for building an amazing retirement

Growing up, my mother was always worried about the future.

She lived her life saving more, sacrificing more, and settling for less —all with the hope that one day she would have the financial and time freedom to spend it all on the family and activities she loved.

Mom passed away at the age of 48.

It's tragic, and not just because my mom was an amazing human (she was). It's sad because I see this kind of thing happen a lot. How many of us will spend most of our present saving for a future we never get to have?

The answer will always be too many. And I've dedicated my entire career to helping people shift what's possible in retirement by changing how they live, work, and celebrate what's possible right now—and keep doing it.

Quality #16 of an Extraordinary Leader

Quality #16 of an Extraordinary Leader

Everyone gets lost, confused, overwhelmed, stuck in a rut, off track, etc.

You’ll have a bad day, lose a customer, get fired from a job, get some bad news, make a mistake, get sick, have your feelings hurt, get in a bad argument, etc.

It’s part of life and business. It’s not necessarily your fault. It doesn’t matter.

What matters is WHAT you do when this happens.

If you give into the feelings of defeat, it can lead to destructive behavior, unhealthy ways of coping and even dangerous forms of medicating.😖

“Great leaders get stuck but they don’t stay stuck.”

👇🏼 5 ways to get unstuck

1. Get up and Move!🏃🏽‍♂️

Stress on your body can bring peace to your mind. Do a challenging workout, take a walk outside and breathe the fresh air or go for a bike ride. Physical activity is a great way to interupt a mental downward spiral. You’ll experience the feeling of accomplishment. Your body will release endorphins that will immediately improve your mood. You’ll feel healthier and more empowered to face the challenge in front of you.

2. Talk About It 🗣

Tell a friend, a mentor or your spouse about how you were derailed today. When you share your struggles with someone else, what sounds insurmountable in your head, often sounds manageable out loud. you are also giving someone else the opportunity to offer support and perspective that you can’t get on your own.

3. Ditch the Quest for Comfort ☺️

It’s all right to feel uncomfortable. It’s part of life and an essential part of growth. A successful person understands that doing the right thing is more important than feeling comfortable. Deep satisfaction will come when you don’t strive for a quick fix. Success is a collection of several small decisions to do the right thing. Ask yourself, what would be best for me and others around me in the long run?

4. Get Inspired 🦸‍♀️

You have free access to incredible content that can help you develop a positive mindset almost immediately. One short video or podcast could completely turn your day around. Jump on YouTube and search for Jim Rohn, Les Brown, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Og Mandino or Tony Robbins. Before you know it you’ll be ready to climb a mountain.

5. Start Over 🌞

Maybe today was a wash. Don’t let it carry over into tomorrow. You have an opportunity for a fresh start. Go to bed early, wake up early, start your day with a run and a healthy breakfast. Drink a lot of water. Take time to pray or meditate. Let the weight of your disappointments go. Focus on being your best from this moment forward.

What has helped YOU when you find yourself stuck?

Quality #13 of an Extraordinary Leader

Today we're talking about a plan that every great leader has. My eyes were opened to this idea when I was building a deck as a full-time construction worker ten years ago. It's changed my life forever and it's something I will never stop doing as long as I'm alive.

I found something written on my whiteboard in my office that blew my mind. It just might mean that I'm launching something new and exciting!

Quality #11 of an Extraordinary Leader

Quality #11 of an Extraordinary Leader

One of the most significant challenges leader's face is the constant tension between work and personal life. Did I accomplish enough today? Am I spending enough time with my family? Will I miss dinner again? Will I get a chance to see the kids before they go to bed? When's the last time we got away to enjoy our marriage? These questions are haunting for the busy executive. If I asked your spouse who gets more of your attention, would he/she say your work? What would your kids say? The world's standards for great leadership don't seem to include a solid marriage and family. Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and more like them who have achieved remarkable success in the marketplace have left behind them a trail of broken relationships. Let's talk about what extraordinary leadership looks like in terms of the tension between work and family.

Quality #7 of an Extraordinary Leader

So many leaders lack access to unbiased perspective and feedback. Where can you go when you're at the top? Who can you trust and lean on through your struggles? Who is really in your corner? Every great leader has a team of trusted friends they can rely on. People who tell them the truth and have their back. If you want to reach your potential as a leader, don't go another day without putting this in place.

If you or your team want to take the Enneagram Assessment, send an email to Michael@mcgreevyleadership.com with the subject Enneagram. The cost is $40  per individual.
