Coaching Session Notes:

The Magical Leader

A magical leader enters Joe’s life - and changes everything.

Setting Expectations

Great leaders set clear expectations that set up their people for success.  They understand the struggles they’re going to encounter, and preempt how they should be handled.  They understand the learning curve that will be necessary, and give them permission to make mistakes to learn.  They understand the inertia of mediocrity, and set the expectation for excellence.

Keys to Recruiting

Hiring mistakes are incredibly common.  We bring someone onto a team with an impeccable resume, and we’re quickly disappointed.  It’s not a good fit.  Their work is subpar.  We can’t get them to where they need to be.

This is often a result of improper recruiting.  While most managers screen primarily for things like experience + education, great leaders screen primarily for what that person believes - about themselves, about the industry, about the world.

To make great hires, we must screen for motivational intelligence first, before weighing education + experience.

The Habit of Self-Reflection

Feedback is not good, it’s not bad - it just is.  It’s information that helps us improve.  But we need a framework for processing this information, and making use of it.  Enter: the habit of self-reflection.

99.99% of the time, the information you’ll receive is not all positive, and it’s not all negative.  So we must categorize accordingly, then apply what we’ve learned.

We do this with 3 simple questions:

  1. What did I do right?
  2. What did I do wrong?
  3. What will I do differently next time to get the result I want?

Helping People Become the Best

Great leaders recognize that their responsibility is not just to manage the tasks and activities of their people.  It’s not just to marshall the time + resources of the team.  It’s not even just to accomplish the team goal.

The responsibility of a great leader is to help people become the best version of themselves; to realize their full potential; to self-actualize.

When leaders show this level of commitment, dedication and care - their people can’t help but improve in their role + develop a newfound sense of loyalty.

“You must love and care for your people to such a degree that they’ll do the right thing when you’re not there - because they don’t want to let you down.” - Randy

Coaching Session Notes:

Big Goals by Big People

Before we can have, we must become.  This is as true today as it has ever been. So we should dream big. We should think abundantly.  We should be ambitious.  That comes first.  But the next step is to become the person capable and worthy of accomplishing the lofty goals we set.

When we dream big, we often feel unworthy.  And that’s because often, we are! We’re not capable of achieving that ambitious goal yet.

But just because we’re not now, doesn’t mean we’re not ever.  We must now dedicate ourselves to the process of becoming - day by day, week by week, year by year.

Knowing Intellectually vs. Knowing Viscerally

There is a difference between knowing and knowing.  It is one thing to understand something on an intellectual level.  “I understand that I can achieve this.”

It is another to really believe something.  “I know that I can achieve this.”

Almost everyone understands intellectually.

Very few understand viscerally - and that’s where the difference is.

Overcoming Information Overload

In the modern world, we are constantly bombarded with information. Text messages, push notifications, breaking news, social media mentions and hours of endless scrolling.

With all this information coming in, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed.  Stress and anxiety have become the norm.

But a big part of this feeling of overwhelm is simply an improper use of the human mind.  We’re not using our brain the ways it’s designed to be used.

When we try to process everything in our conscious, thinking mind - we feel overwhelmed.  Because quite literally we are! The conscious mind can only process 40 bits of info per second - but it’s receiving way more.

But when we process everything in our subconscious mind - not trying to think everything through, but trusting our subconscious to direct us where we need to go - we feel calm. Controlled. At peace.

Our subconscious mind can process 20,000,000 bits of info per second - we just need to trust it.

Right Actions, Right Results.

The physical world operates on the law of cause and effect.  When we take the right actions, we get the right results.  When we take the wrong actions, we get the wrong results.   When we take a mix of right and wrong actions, we get the all-too-common mediocre results.

This is a beautiful thing, because it means we are in complete control of our destiny.  We just have to study + execute on the patterns that will get us where we want to go, by studying the people that have done it before.

The Third Entity of the Mind: Self-Esteem

We’ve talked so far about 2 entities of the mind: the conscious and the subconscious.  But this begs the question - why can’t we just hand someone a plan for achieving a goal?

If we can tell them exactly what to do + how to do it, and know the result they’ll get when they do - why won’t they do it?

There’s something holding us back.  And it lives in this third entity of the mind: self-esteem.

We don’t take actions we don’t believe we’re capable of.  We don’t take actions we don’t believe we’re worthy of.  We don’t take actions we’re afraid are going to bring us negative feedback.

Self-esteem is formed early in our lives.  But the good news is, we can reshape it.

Coaching Session Notes:

The Happiest People in the World

The happiest people in the world are in a constant state of creation.  They’re constantly dreaming, building and creating the life they want. And when they achieve it, they set their sights on what’s next - envisioning the next item they’ll add to their life’s resume.  This is the secret to happiness - not necessarily because of what we accomplish, but because of who we become along the journey.

The sweetest juice is in striving for something greater, becoming something more - and as a uniquely human capability - to dream something up in our mind and make it a reality - it should be the center point of our focus.  It’s where the greatest innovations come from, it’s where our great accomplishments originate, it’s where we are at our best.

It all starts with the dream - so think big, think bold, think abundant.  We’ll cover the rest as we go, but it all starts there.

Before We Can Have, We Must Become

Before our dreams can become a reality, we must become the person that is capable and worthy of accomplishing it.  Big dreams, big goals, big ambitions don’t happen by the handiwork of small thinking people.  They come to fruition when a person can do what they need to do in order to make them happen.

The good news, we all have the ability to become whatever it is we need to become to get where we want to go. We’ve been doing this our whole lives - turning weaknesses into strengths.

At one point we could not walk - but through trial and error, we learned how. At one point we could not ride a bike - but through trial and error, we learned how. At one point we could not do anything we can do now that makes us effective at work - but through trial and error, we learned how.

None of our weaknesses are a life sentence - we just need to know the proper way to use our minds to turn them into strengths.

Setting the Goal (Conscious Mind)

To accomplish anything, we must first use the conscious mind to set the goal.  Our dreams originate here, in the conscious mind. But to turn them into reality, we have to crystalize them.

Goals must be clear + specific - so as to tell the next part of the mind how to direct us.

Developing the Plan (Subconscious Mind)

Once we set a clear + specific goal, the subconscious mind begins to develop the plan for how to achieve it. As we envision exactly what it is we want - what it looks like, what it feels like, what it tastes like - our subconscious mind works relentlessly to figure out how to get it for us.

It will generate new ideas, solve problems + overcome obstacles - delivering new ideas + tasks to the conscious mind for that beautiful “aha!”.

So there’s no need to overthink, no need to worry.  Just focus on what you want, and just like driving to work - your subconscious mind will take you there on autopilot.  Over time, it will tell you what to do, and how to do it. Just listen, and execute.

The Highest Plane of Performance

The highest plane of performance in any role arrives when we master the fundamentals - because the world operates on the law of cause and effect.  And in this world, we’re all operating on the plans we’ve internalized to date.

The keys to mastery are not easy, but they are simple - and they’re all around us

Coaching Session Notes:

IQ vs. EQ vs. MQ

We all have that little voice in our heads that talks to us all day long. What most people don't recognize is that this is actually a third category of human intelligence: motivational intelligence (MQ).

Based upon Nobel Prize winning research and supported by studies out of Yale, Harvard, Stanford and Oxford, this unified theory of motivation unveils the single best predictor of success (and how we can use this to our advantage).

Commonalities of Successful People

Regardless of role, industry or demographic, there are common traits that all successful people share.  They're motivated, they're determined, they're accountable, they're resilient, they're adaptable, they take initiative, they move with courage.

But simply knowing that these traits make us successful doesn't necessarily help us become more successful.  And it certainly doesn't help us embody those traits. People say, "be more adaptable". Okay, but how?

The truth is, the underlying reason people hold these traits is what they believe.  And that's what we're going to talk way more about as we journey through this program.

The Myths of Success

There are plenty of reasons that people become successful. But almost none of them have anything to do with anyone other than that person.  We say certain people are lucky, or more naturally gifted, or know more people in high places.

While sometimes this is true, there are plenty of examples of people who did it without. And more importantly, using these as excuses is simply going to keep us exactly where we are - holding us back for the rest of our lives if we let it.

The Definition of Success

There is no universal definition of success.  No one attribute or milestone or income level that is what the entire world agrees is the line we must cross to be considered a success.

The truth is, there is only one person who decides what the definition of success is: you.  Because your definition might be different than my definition, which might be different than their definition.  And that's okay.  That's what keeps the world interesting.

But most people never take the time to really define what success means to them.  They drift from job to job, from house to house, from year to year without ever deciding: what do I really want?

That's not going to be you though. Because it's never too early, and it's never to late to start the next chapter of your life.  And you're here, in Mojo, which means you're already ahead of the ballgame.

Power to Create

"Life changes when you realize one very simple thing: that the whole world around you was made up by people who were no smarter than you.  And you can change it, you can mold it.  Once you realize that, life is never the same." - Steve Jobs
