It's Never About the Money - Sarah Leslie - Episode 116

It's Never About the Money - Sarah Leslie - Episode 116

After 20 years of work Sarah Leslie had a very high paying career doing something she was really good at… but it was killing her. The job was so intense that she was literally sleeping with her cell phone in the bed so she wouldn’t miss any work related calls. People were starting to comment that she was losing weight and turning pale.

One day during the final rest pose of a yoga class, lying there in the dark with about 50 other people, she started crying uncontrollably. That was totally out of character and it was enough to finally move her to action. When she got up from that mat she knew she had to make a change and resigned from her job the very next day.

Sarah is now an Identity Artist who helps highly motivated individuals become strategically liberated CEO over their whole lives, including the way they create money. In addition to sharing her story, in this episode Sarah reveals the underlying causes of why we get stuck in our money beliefs and how we can start to break free.

"Money is just paper. Money doesn't mean anything unless you and I agree it means something."

-Sarah Leslie

About Sarah Leslie

Sarah spent the first 20 years of her career working from the therapy chair and as the Director of Clinical services over a 150 bed residential facility.

After a dramatic shift in her own life, she pivoted to the virtual space allowing her the freedom to work from anywhere!  Now, she helps highly motivated individuals become strategically liberated CEO over their whole lives, including the way they create money.

She stands out from others in her field as she is fiercely committed to her own personal growth so that she can continue to push past her own limits.

Service Without Sacrifice - Linda-Ann Stewart - Episode 115

Service Without Sacrifice - Linda-Ann Stewart - Episode 115

Many of us, especially women, are taught that in order to serve we must sacrifice something precious to us. Frequently, the sacrifice we make is our own well being. We sacrifice our income, our physical health, and our and mental health to be what we believe to be the most helpful and the most useful person possible.

For years Linda-Ann Stewart did exactly that. She volunteered regularly and helped out with every event until her health took a turn for the worst and she was forced to learn to say “no”. As she practiced saying no she made some key discoveries about being of service versus giving a gift. Most importantly that service doesn’t have to be for free and that it’s incredibly hard to give when your energy and finances are low.

In this episode Linda-Ann shares her story and we discuss how value, priorities, feeling indebted, and feelings of  resentment all play into this theme. Linda-Ann does a wonderful job of teaching us where to draw the line, creative ways to say no with confidence and kindness, and how to serve without sacrifice.

"Service is different than a gift."

-Linda-Ann Stewart

About Linda-Ann Stewart

As a focus coach, hypnotherapist, speaker and writer, Linda-Ann Stewart works with women entrepreneurs and small business owners who have gotten stuck and distracted by shiny objects. She empowers them to focus, master their mindset and manage their priorities, so they manifest greater prosperity, well being and freedom. She opened her private hypnotherapy practice in 1990, a few years after moving to Sedona, Arizona.

A dozen years ago, she transitioned her business to coaching women to be more effective, efficient and productive. Over 300 of her articles on mindset, motivation, and empowerment have been published in magazines, newsletters and online. Many can be found on her website, and her Monthly Coaching Tips videos can be found on her YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/LindaAnnStewart

Money Mantra:

"When I'm being of service, I accept an equitable exchange of energy or reward that benefits both sides."

Linda-Ann and I are both big fans of Renaissance festivals. She suggested wearing chainmail we’d each gotten at a faire along with some matching garb. The hardest part for me was choosing which chainmail pieces to wear!

Taking the Risk - Jennifer Vellenga - Episode 114

Not too long ago Jen Vellenga (Jen V) and Jennifer Rettele-Thomas (JRT) started a company dedicated to helping women speak with presence as a side hustle. Then after a few months, they decided to take a big risk. They chose to resign from their steady, stable, university jobs and make their side hustle their main gig.

In this episode, Jen V shares what it was like to take such a risk (yes, there was last minute panicking involved) and how they knew it would be worth it. She talks about her supportive husband and a few others who were much less supportive.

Jen’s big concept for starting Voice First World was to help women speak with presence without being perfect. When she told me about her “Perfection is Overrated” t-shirt I decided to use that as the costume theme for this episode.

Then, because irony loves me, I forgot to take a pic while in costume and had to pull a screenshot from our video recording. Genius.

Robert spent 10 years traveling the world and working as a missionary. During his travels he learned many important lessons. One was that smiles and hugs translate into any language. Robert realized the more money he had the more he could affect change in the world. In this episode he shares how he came to this conclusion and how he’s built a business based on teaching other entrepreneurs to do the same.

After years of trying to work harder and faster Rita was at a breaking point. She was overwhelmed and feeling intense pressure to take care of her children, be a supportive spouse, and be a successful entrepreneur. Her business wasn’t generating the income she desired and she was becoming increasingly more distraught. Rita knew she was an intelligent person but for some reason she just couldn’t figure this one out.

Rita hired a coach and started working with him over the phone. One of the first things he asked her to do was to pause and start taking care of herself. Over the next few years she completely changed her views on abundance and worthiness and discovered how she had been blocking all the goodness she desired. Join us as Rita shares about her transformation and gives us mindset tips on how we too can create extraordinary abundance in our lives.

“When you when you feel that not enoughness, there's not enough time, there's not enough money, there's not enough love, there's not enough food, nothing is enough. There's not enough goodness... and you're coming from that place.”

- Rita Desnoyers-Garcia

"I am open to money appearing in all forms and in all ways."

Costumes

Rita chose not to dress in costume for our episode, so that gave me an opportunity to play. I chose a costume inspired by Dr. Olivia Octavius from Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. One of my kids volunteered to make the signature glasses for me. I love how they turned out.

You Don't Have to Go It Alone - Anna Roszak - Episode 105

You Don't Have to Go It Alone - Anna Roszak - Episode 105

As Anna Roszak was listening to Episode 082 of MoneyHeart, Recovering from a Money Fight, she realized not enough people were speaking about emotional and financial abuse. In that episode my guest, Stephen Finney, recommended that rather than blame your partner for all the money problems, start by taking at least 1% ownership of the problem. Excellent advice. And he included one caveat which was… not if you’re in an abusive relationship.

Anna was so glad we brought that up because when she was in an abusive relationship she was blaming herself all the time. This realization sparked her to reach out to me and ask if we could record an episode about her experience in hopes that we may shed some light on this issue, help others to recognize their situation, and get help on the path to recovery.

In this episode, Anna shares her experience of emotional and financial abuse. It is different from many well known abuse cases because her husband never hit her. There was no physical abuse so for years she didn’t realize there was a problem. This is very common. She explains what happened, what the clues were, how she got help, and what you can do if you notice a friend who might be in a similar situation. I’m so grateful to Anna for being brave enough to share her story in support of the greater good.

“I didn’t know I was in an abusive relationship until I was out of it for years.”

Anna told me she had a bee costume on hand so I matched her theme. I think we make excellent bees and I love the underlying metaphor of a colony who works together for the benefit of all.

Myths that Keep Your Kids in College Debt - Denise Thomas - Episode 101

Does the idea of paying for your kid’s college keep you up at night? Denise Thomas was terrified of her children being stuck with nearly lifelong crushing college debt so she got to work. After more than 7,000 hours of research she figured out how to help her kids win scholarships. Between the two of them they won over $199,000 in scholarships, each went to 4 years of college, and graduated debt-free with cash left over.

Denise emphasizes that her homeschooled teens weren’t geniuses or sports superstars. Her 6-step strategy is repeatable! In this episode she shares the story of how she and her family began this journey, the inside scoop on college applications and scholarships, and tips on how your kids can graduate from college debt-free, too.

"Back when I was in college, colleges were looking for what we now call the jack of all trades. You had to dabble in a little bit of everything. Many parents still believe that to be true. Yet another myth."  -Denise Thomas

About Denise Thomas

Denise Thomas is a TEDx speaker, international best-selling author, and coach to parents of college-bound teens. Her mission is to ‘flip’ the student debt statistic in the U.S. using her Cracking the Code to Free College strategy.

They attended college on 17 scholarships exceeding $199,000, graduating college with cash left over. Denise says you can keep your money. Send your kids to college on other people’s cash!

Flip the Script - Camille Diaz - Episode 100

Flip the Script - Camille Diaz - Episode 100

Almost at a loss for words when trying to say something about this episode. Episode 100!!! I can hardly believe all the amazing stories and learning that have come out of creating and producing the MoneyHeart podcast for the past couple of years. For this very special episode I’ve asked my friend, mentor, and former MoneyHeart guest, Peter Biadasz, to interview me. He got to make up all the questions and I had no idea what they would be going into the recording session.

"Peter: We'll start off with an easy question. What is the meaning of life?

Camille: 42"

If you got that joke your nerd game is at least as strong as mine and I’m impressed. If you didn’t get it and want to level up, you can read about that answer here: https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/42/. Peter and I have a great time on this show and it will probably remain one of my favorite episodes. I hope you enjoy it as well.

The positive feedback I get from listeners and the stories you tell me about how various episodes have impacted your lives is really what keeps me going. Thank you all so much and stay tuned for Season 3!

PS: For those keeping track and paying attention to details like I do without even trying… in the show I said Peter’s episode was 016. I was wrong. It was actually Episode 014, Making the Best Out of the Worst: https://serenityfinancial.us/2020/07/30/making-the-best-out-of-the-worst/.

Peter’s company is called Total Publishing and Media. You can get in touch with him through LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-biadasz-bb73102/ and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peter.biadasz

Wisdom from a Seasoned Bookkeeper - Jo Ann Richards - Episode 096

Wisdom from a Seasoned Bookkeeper - Jo Ann Richards - Episode 096

Earlier in life Jo Ann made the mistake so many women make of relying on her husband to handle the family finances. That’s what her mother had done and she thought everything would be just fine. Unfortunately it wasn’t. It led her down a path of poor investments and eventually to bankruptcy. Now a seasoned bookkeeper Jo Ann teaches her clients just how important it is to have a knowledge of your finances even if you’re not the primary income earner.

“You need to have some emergency money.”

Jo Ann shares a wealth of knowledge in this episode including her top tips for women and top tips for business owners.

Tips for Women:

1. Have someone work with you to set up a budget for planning and bill paying.

2. Have savings ‘buckets’ for taxes, emergencies, fun, etc.

3. Work with a financial planner to get solid advice on retirement preparation.

 Tips for business owners:

1. Keep biz and personal finances separate.

2. It’s best to start with a bookkeeper from the beginning. Let a bookkeeper set up the accounting system and then maintain the books. Just because you know how to enter items in QB does not make you a bookkeeper.

3. Collect W9 forms from service providers/indie contractors as you start to work with them and ideally before you pay them.

4. Tell your bookkeeper everything related to money and assets owned.

5.Have the bookkeeper do the sales tax return. Set aside the sales tax collected for future payment.

6. Venmo – share the transactions with the bookkeeper.

7. Amazon – bookkeeper needs to know the categories of the purchases.

8. Be prepared to be specific…can’t just call something a ‘biz expense.’

9. Keep track of biz mileage. Note odometer reading on 12/31 or 1/1.

10. Set up bank/credit card logins for the bookkeeper so they don’t have to bug you for a security code, especially if you’ve changed your password.

11. Be sure to save money for taxes.

12. Set money aside for reserves.

13. Understand that a profit on paper does not = bank balance.

Jo Ann Richards is a native Californian now living in Portland OR. She has been a bookkeeper since 1976, has worked as an employee and has been self-employed for the 2nd time since 2007. Crunching numbers is a skill inherited from her father and grandfather. Her thriving bookkeeping practice has clients on both the East and West Coasts of the US plus a client in England. She is the mother of a grown daughter and proud grandmother of three. She’s been married for over 19 years.

Jo Ann’s book is available at dragonhillbooks.net. To get in contact with Jo Ann you can email her at joann@midlifemagic.biz. She is also on LinkedIn, Facebook, & Instagram.

Shifting Your Reality - Jacqy Stewart - Episode 094

Shifting Your Reality - Jacqy Stewart - Episode 094

During our initial discussion to plan this episode Jacqy and I discovered we had both held and removed the same limiting belief around money. We always had enough, but we never had extra. We would both put off doing fun activities or buying things we needed to replace because we felt we couldn’t afford them. For both of us, this lack mindset stemmed from childhood events. Independently from each other, we each went through the process of identifying and clearing this block to move forward into an abundance mindset.

“Awareness is the key to all change.”

Throughout this episode Jacqy teaches how to identify and begin to clear limiting beliefs. She emphasizes the importance of our words and how we create our reality with our words and thoughts. She not only explains the importance of being aware of our current thoughts, but how critical it is to decide what program you would like to run instead. If you don’t ask for what you want, you won’t get it.

One of the most helpful tools is when Jacqy walks me through an anxiety protocol during the show. It only took about a minute and it really worked! My thoughts and my attitude around the money issue I chose completely changed. I’ll be returning to this exercise regularly.

Jacqy is a Mindset Coach and Transformational Trainer. She worked as a High School English and History Teacher for 16 years before discovering the untapped power and potential of the unconscious mind and completing a set of intense trainings in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy (TLT) and NLP Coaching.

After experiencing the tools herself as a client, she went from being a depressed, anxious, people pleasing perfectionist on the edge of burnout to an empowered, perfectly imperfect Coach and Transformational Trainer who is on a mission to help others step into their power and light up the world.

You can connect with Jacqy on LinkedIn and on Instagram @jacqystewart.coaching. Sign up for her upcoming training an score some freebies on her website https://jacqystewart.com.

Leaving Legacies not Liabilities - Kimberly Tromatore - Episode 091

Leaving Legacies not Liabilities - Kimberly Tromatore - Episode 091

When Kimberly talks to her clients about the importance of preparing for their financial future it’s not just something she read in a book, it’s something she’s lived. Kimberly watched her grandmother build a financial empire of rental properties and businesses only to have it slowly whittled away by the expenses of caring for her mother, her brother, and her husband. Ultimately, by the time she needed the money to care for herself there wasn’t much left and she ended up living with family instead.

“After X time, maybe 2 years in, hey, I can’t really afford $6k a month.”

In this episode Kimberly shares her family story of having wealth but not being able to pass it on to the next generation because of lingering illness. We teach the rule of 72 and discuss the many benefits of life insurance as a wealth protecting and wealth building building tool.

Kimberly talks about the week she found search results for 780,000 posts on GoFundMe requesting help with final expenses just within the US. We talk about how many families use GoFundMe to cover final expenses for their loved ones and how this could be so easily changed through even a small life insurance policy.

Kimberly is a licensed financial educator, who teaches individuals what’s not taught in school. She can be reached through her Link Tree at https://linktr.ee/ktromatore.

12 Tenets of Abundance - Nichole Jones - Episode 090

12 Tenets of Abundance - Nichole Jones - Episode 090

I am where I am and that’s ok is just one of Nichole Jones’ 12 tenets of abundance. In this episode of MoneyHeart she shares them all (and two extras) to help us advance in our journeys to create the future we desire.

"Money doesn’t solve money problems."

After being stuck in the cycle of thinking “I just need ___” Nichole chose to break free and change her thinking about money and abundance. She has compiled a list of the concepts which have helped her the most and uses these concepts to help her clients ease into the flow of abundance rather than always fighting against the current.

Nichole’s 12+2 tenets of abundance are…

1. Money doesn’t solve money problems.

2. I am where I am and that is ok.

3. Don’t focus on reality!

4. Living within your means is an act of self-love.

5. Money doesn’t define your worthiness, neither does debt.

6. Act as if and feel like you will feel if you have money. Visualize and feel.

7. Money is prana (life force energy), it needs to flow.

8. Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership.

9. Feel all of your feelings, avoid spiritual bypassing.

10. Manifestation responds to vibration.

11. Is this an upper limit problem?

12. Your outer world reflects your inner world.

13. I am 100% responsible for my results.

14. Get curious.

You can download a copy of the 12 tenets at nicholejones.com/money.

If you would like to get in touch with Nichole you can email her at nichole@nicholejones.com or set up a consultation at consultwithnichole.as.me/consult.

Reflecting in Retirement - Aleta Laurence - Episode 087

Reflecting in Retirement - Aleta Laurence - Episode 087

Aleta Laurence has been retired for the past 19 years. She learned money management by necessity when pregnant with her first child, which was ME! In this episode she shares how she saved diligently and budgeted carefully to build up enough retirement savings to last her throughout her later years. Reflecting on her first full-time salaried job she points out that the take-home pay is never as much as you think it will be.

“Of course, then the taxes come out, and the social security comes out, and the copay for the health insurance comes out. And so of course I had a lot less money than I thought I was going to have, but I saved anyway."

More than once Aleta mentions how fortunate she feels to have had all the money stuff work out. She occasionally needed a little bit of help along the way in the form of loans which she paid back, but overall it was her consistency in saving and spending wisely which made the difference. She does mention that in hindsight, she thinks it would have been beneficial to have taken more vacations and time off to avoid burnout. Join us for a trip down memory lane!

Aleta has a matters degree in urban planning and is the former planning director for Riverside County, California. I feel very fortunate to have been able to interview my mom on the show.

After we finished recording she added that she should have told everyone to exercise and brush their teeth. She says if you do those all along you won’t have big problems later but if you don’t, you will struggle, and you can’t make up for it later.

The Emotional Side of Time - Conrad Ruiz - Episode 083

The Emotional Side of Time - Conrad Ruiz - Episode 083

Conrad Ruiz thinks about time a little differently from most. At time of recording he was 26 and his father was 95 years old. His entire life Conrad has felt the pressure of limited time with his “old man”. Several years ago Conrad was diagnosed with a kidney condition which essentially cut his life expectancy in half. After several years in biomedical engineering trying to discover a cure, he really starting thinking about how to maximize all the time he has.

“We are all under this societal pressure that our time is our money and we need to figure out a way to make the most of it.”

In this episode Conrad and I discuss how individuals choose to spend their time and the concept of diminishing returns. We talk in depth about the value of time. Instead of exploring the emotional side of money (this show’s theme) we explore the emotional side of time.

Conrad is the Founder of Well Aware and Co-founder of Intro’d. Conrad studied biomedical engineering after he was made aware that he had only one kidney with multiple cysts. Rather than continue down his path of study, Conrad’s ultimate reflections on struggling with his and his father’s health led him to focus more on time and time management. Conrad loves communicating via email. To reach him you can send an email to cruiz@wellaware.me.

Recovering from a Money Fight - Stephen Finney - Episode 082

Recovering from a Money Fight - Stephen Finney - Episode 082

Just about every couple has been in a money fight at some point. Even a fight triggered by something else can have a root cause which is a money issue. Financial coach, Stephen Finney, helps couples stop fighting about money. He shares the importance of getting to the main issue to start to solve the problem which might be less complicated than we think.

“I’m not stressed because we don’t have the money. I’m stressed because I don’t have clarity and confidence around where our money’s going. If I did, it would probably be fine.”

Stephen shares his first 6 steps on how to recover from a money fight and we discuss the best ways to diffuse the situation quickly so positive actions can happen.

1. Take some time to process. Emotions are high, one of you needs time to process emotion.

2. Gain awareness around your thoughts. Are you blaming? Building your case against them? Just ask yourself without self-judgment what you are doing.

3. Find the 1% of the conflict that YOU were responsible for. Own it, admit it to yourself. Put them first in spite of it. This is hard. The risk is that they won’t reciprocate. Do it anyway!

4. Approach them and own your part, without blaming them.

5. THEN, and only then: Use a “when, I felt” statement. When this situation happened, I felt ______.

6. Get some help! Don’t wait. Use me or a counselor to be a third party. It’s ok to ask for help.

Charging What You're Worth - Chris Rivera - Episode 080

When Chris Rivera helps clients change their thinking he doesn’t focus on who they are now, he focuses on helping them become the person they want to be. We have an amazing discussion on the importance of charging what you’re worth and how you can change your mindset to feel more comfortable doing so.

Chris shares how important it is to set a goal which inspires you and to just get started. We can’t know all the steps at the beginning so stop planning and get going! Once you are committed to the goal and take the first step you’ll be in a better position to figure out the next step.

Many entrepreneurs start a business to create something special.  They have a gift or skill they want to share with the world through their business and in doing so, they want to create a sense of fulfillment, joy, happiness, and balance in their life.  There’s a sense of peace that comes with creating a successful business.

Unfortunately, those same business owners are struggling for a variety of reasons.  In many cases, they know what action steps they should be taking but they have difficulty following through.  It’s the gap between what they know they should be doing and what they’re actually doing.

Chris works with entrepreneurs and network marketers on how to close that gap to begin following through the action steps that generate revenue and clients.  Chris helps them build within themselves the future successful self that is worthy of achieving their goals.  When his clients begin operating from that future successful self, success is no longer a guessing game; success becomes guaranteed.

2021: A Year in Review - Camille Diaz - Episode 079

2021: A Year in Review - Camille Diaz - Episode 079

Solo episode! Last year’s solo episode, Hindsight 2020: A Year In Review, was a fan favorite so I chose to make it a tradition and record another one to wrap up 2021. I asked my audience via social media what questions you would like me to answer. I got some great ones which resulted in quite a few interesting personal stories including the one about my biggest business failure. After that failure I was all kinds of distraught but people started calling me and saying this:

“Really sorry you guys closed, but... would you help me with?”

What else did I share in a 26-minute episode based on just three questions? Guess you’ll have to listen and find out. The questions I selected to answer during this episode were:

1. I’m interested in a summary or common elements or attitudes of your guests who are “at ease” with abundance.  From LaurieAnn Powell

2. What was the biggest financial obstacle you overcame and how did you do it?  From Tabitha L. Taylor

3. What have been your greatest triumphs and challenges with your podcasts, and how did you respond/react to them?  From Peter Biadasz

A huge thank you to all those who submitted questions. If your question wasn’t selected for the episode I’ve sent you a personal answer via direct message.

Wishing everyone a fantastic 2022 and beyond!
