Avoiding Blanket One-Size-Fits-All Money Advice with Dana Miranda - 156
In this eye-opening episode, we’re joined by returning guest Dana Miranda, personal finance journalist, author of You Don’t Need a Budget, and creator of the Healthy Rich newsletter. Together, they challenge the traditional narratives around money management, including budgeting, debt, and investing. Dana shares insightful perspectives on how our cultural approach to money often leans on restriction and shame, and she offers empowering alternatives to create a healthier relationship with finances.
Key Takeaways:
Budgeting Doesn’t Have to Be the Only Answer:
- Traditional budgeting, rooted in restriction, can sometimes harm our relationship with money.
- Alternatives like the money map or a yes fund offer intuitive and empowering ways to manage money without feeling constrained.
Avoid Blanket Financial Advice:
- Financial advice that assumes a “one-size-fits-all” approach can ignore individual needs and circumstances.
- Focus on personal goals and values to make financial decisions that align with your lifestyle.
Reframing Debt:
- Debt can be a valuable tool when used thoughtfully to support life goals.
- Understanding the mechanics of debt products (e.g., interest rates, credit score implications) is key to using them wisely and avoiding unnecessary stress.
Investing Beyond the Norm:
- While low-cost index funds are widely recommended, they are not the only path to growing wealth.
- Alternative options, such as peer-to-peer lending and community investments, may align better with personal ethics or goals but often come with more risk.
Cultural and Systemic Barriers:
- Many financial challenges stem from systemic issues, not personal failings.
- Awareness and education can empower individuals to navigate these barriers more effectively.
The money talking points for this week are:
- Do you view budgeting in a way that’s damaging to your relationship with money?
- What does your money map look like?
- How can you use debt to support your life goals?

The 60/40 Principle and How It Can Help You with Janine Bolan - 146
In this episode of Money Talk, I delve into the 60/40 principle with Janine Bolan, a biochemist turned financial educator. Janine shares her journey of creating this principle to help her family live on a single income after transitioning from a two-income household. The 60/40 principle is a straightforward approach where 60% of found money (unexpected income like bonuses and gifts) goes into your checking account, while the remaining 40% is divided equally among short-term savings, long-term savings, philanthropy, and charity or spirituality. Janine emphasizes starting with found money to gradually build the habit of saving before applying the principle to your regular income. This method not only aids in habitual saving but also helps in reducing debt. If you're looking to improve your financial situation and develop a strong saving habit, this episode is packed with valuable insights and practical advice. Tune in to learn how you can implement the 60/40 principle in your life and start your journey toward financial stability.

Renting vs Buying with Heather Eason - 140
Today, we're diving headfirst into the age-old debate: renting vs. buying a home. Spoiler alert – I’m firmly in the pro-renting camp right now, but we’ll explore all angles.
We'll chat about the freedom of renting and the personal touches of home ownership. You know, like the thrill of painting walls and adding rooms – if that’s your thing – or the convenience of calling your landlord when something breaks instead of dealing with it yourself. We’ll also talk dollars and cents. Ever wonder why your rent keeps going up? And what's the deal with down payments and emergency funds for buying a house? I’ve got you covered. Plus, we’ll ponder the timeline – should you really buy a house if you plan to stay put for less than seven years? Is home ownership really the golden goose everyone claims, or just a goose? We’ll debate whether it's a smart investment or if you'd be better off betting on the S&P 500. And let’s not forget the flexibility and perks of renting, like having a gym, bar, and coffee shop right downstairs – who needs a backyard when you have all that? I'll also share my personal take on why it’s okay to go against the grain and keep renting as a long-term option. Remember, life’s too short to follow societal norms that don’t fit your lifestyle.
So, grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and let’s dive into this episode. Let’s make the rent vs. buy debate as fun as possible!
The Money Talking points for today’s episode are:
1. Should everyone buy a home?
2. Should homeownership be considered an investment?

Building Generational Wealth Through Retirement with Kevin Benson - 133
In today’s episode, we're diving into a topic that's often kept under wraps but is crucial for financial success: talking money in the workplace. We often spend most of our time around those we work with. Yet we don’t turn to them for advice on money. Why not? Talking about money in the workplace can seem uncomfortable but it is a great place to learn from each other and even promote change. The only way your workplace retirement plan is going to get changed is by talking about it with your co workers.
In today’s interview Kevin Benson, founder of SERC (Southern Education Retirement Consortium), will join us to discuss how talking about financial matters openly in the workplace can have profound benefits, especially for educators. We explore why it's essential for educators to engage in conversations about money, the impact of retirement plans like the 403b and 457b, and how services like SERC are revolutionizing retirement consulting for educators across the nation.
But this conversation can extend beyond just educators. Are you heading to work and wondering why your retirement options at work aren’t any good? Well start talking to others. I’ve been able to promote some change and conversation at my work by talking about money more. I know my co workers will bounce financial ideas off of be because of my podcast. But I’ve also been able to talk with HR to get some 401k education from the company that runs our 401k. But I’ve also gotten them to consider adding a Roth option to our 401k. Thought it hasn’t happened yet, simple conversations get the ball rolling whether you’re an educator or in any other profession. Make sure you stay tuned for today’s great interview and some great content after the interview as well where I’m going to talk about an article I found outlining if Door Dash is worth it or not!

1. What retirement changes would you like to see at work?

The Keys to Increasing Your Financial Confidence with Christopher Hensley - 130
In today’s episode, we’re talking with Chris Hensley about his podcast, talking about money, talking about investing, money fears, and feeling confident with money in our lives. Chris is a podcast host for 10+ years and a financial coach. He hosts the podcast, Money Matters. I was recently a guest on his podcast. So if you want to go listen to that episode, I’ll leave a link in the show notes!
But to outline a little more of what were talking about today. Should you talk about money with friends? Should you talk about Investing? These are great questions to be asking and Chris and I dive into how that can be helpful and sometimes harmful. So you may hear an example of when I don’t think it’s a good idea to talk about money! But Chris and I also get into why we like podcasting so much and I would even encourage anyone who has a field of interest to start creating some content around it so you can use it as a way to talk to the people you want to be around. Want to be around your favorite authors, starting talking about the books you’re reading and so on! Podcasts and other content is a great way to get around the people that you look to for help in your own life
Today’s segments are going to include the Money Talking Points of course as well as a handy hint, a personal finance power up, and I’m debuting a new segment called the Water Cooler. So make sure to stick around to the end for today’s great episode!
