Escaping Moral Adventure

Escaping Moral Adventure

By Mark & Fallon Sparks

By almost any measure, the world is "better" today than ever. We have reduced poverty and the child mortality rate while increasing literacy and education. Yet mental health issues are drastically rising, happiness is in decline and marriage is becoming less common. We will discuss a potential cause, the concept of Moral Adventure. Moral Adventure leads to inaction, the shedding of responsibility, the refusal to make commitments and in the end, aimlessness. We will discuss some of the traps of Moral Adventure and how to escape through the concept of Spontaneous Obedience.

37. You Messed Up, Now What?

37. You Messed Up, Now What?

Now what? After you’ve made a mistake in life, what do you do next? Today, we discuss three ways people typically handle mess ups. Do you find someone or something to blame, try to justify your mistake, or do you own it? One of these choices can make you a better friend, family member, or even coworker, and the other two choices will cause you to lose integrity.

We used the following website to help us gather information for this episode:

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/integrity

We referenced the following scriptures in today’s episode:

Proverbs 10:9 (ESV) Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

Proverbs 28:6 (ESV) Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.

Proverbs 11:3 (ESV) The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.

Proverbs 20:7 (ESV) The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him!

Psalm 84:11 (NASB) For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

36. Don't Judge Others?

36. Don't Judge Others?

In this week’s episode, we discuss whether or not we are to judge others. On the surface, it seems the Bible may contradict itself on this matter of judging others. However, after digging in a bit further we find a much deeper and consistent idea of what the Bible teaches about judging. We *should* discern/judge right from wrong. We should *not* judge the person - that is God’s job and his alone.

We used the following resources in this episode. Please take the time to read these articles to learn more about right and wrong judgments.

35. Building Better Friendships

Having great friends is key for your physical, mental, and spiritual health, but building great friendships can seem daunting. Today we discuss the benefits and characteristics of great friendships and some practical ways to cultivate strong friendships in your own life.

We referenced the following articles and scripture during today’s episode:

The data and studies behind the benefits of friendships:

https://www.livescience.com/53315-how-friendships-are-good-for-your-health.html

John 15:12-15: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.“

Proverbs 18:24: “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,  but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Proverbs 22:24-25: “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.”

1 Corinthians 15:33: “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Proverbs 13:20: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

31. Grace Is Free And Costly

31. Grace Is Free And Costly

Grace is a free gift from God, which is an incredible truth about Christianity—there is nothing we can do to earn it. What we oftentimes fail to realize, though, is that accepting this free gift of grace costs us something…our life.

In today’s episode, we discuss the difference between cheap grace and costly grace as introduced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in The Cost of Discipleship. We find that cheap grace is grace without discipleship. We look to scripture to discover what it means to actually be a disciple. It’s no simple task, but it’s totally worth it!

We mentioned the following resources during this episode:

2) The Real God by Chip Ingram

3) Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

27. The Good News

27. The Good News

Today’s episode is all about The Good News….The Good News of the Gospel! We share The Gospel – the good news of Jesus Christ and his plan of salvation – during the first half of the episode. In the last half of the episode, we reflect on our own lives with Christ and give encouragement to those who may be seeking Christ.

If you’re on the fence about accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior, it’s time to get off the fence. Accepting Jesus as Lord of your life will be the best decision you ever make!

When sharing the Good News of The Gospel in today’s episode, we referenced the following passages of scripture:

1. Genesis Chapters 1 through 3 – The Creation and The Fall

2. Colossians 1:16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.

3. John 3:16 For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

4. Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

5. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

6. Romans 10:9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

7. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

The following scriptures were referenced during the last half of the episode when we were chatting about our experiences.

1. Luke 15:10 In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.

2. Philippians 4:6-7 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

3. Ephesians 3:20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

4. 1 Corinthians 12:27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

5. Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

6. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Additionally, we referenced the following scriptures:

Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT - Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.

John 14:9 - Jesus replied, "Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Psalm 119:33-34a NLT - Teach me your decrees, O Lord, I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions.

James 1:5 NASB - But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

25. Beyond Forgiveness: Reconciliation

25. Beyond Forgiveness: Reconciliation

Today on the podcast Mark takes us beyond forgiveness, into reconciliation. While forgiveness is something one person can do on their own, reconciliation requires the one who forgives to desire reconciliation and the one who was forgiven to act.

This perfectly mirrors how Christ freely forgave us through is actions on the cross, yet to receive reconciliation, we must accept this forgiveness by believing in Him, repenting of our sins, and therefore being reconciled to him.

Mark also referenced the following scriptures in today’s episode:

2 Corinthians 5:18–19 NIV

18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.

2 Corinthians 5:11a

11Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others

2 Corinthians 5:17

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

1 Peter 2:21

21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered[a] for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.

Romans 5:10

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Additionally, we leveraged several scriptures throughout this episode including:

Ephesians 5:25, 31-32 NLT

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her. 31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.

Ephesians 4:29 NLT

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Proverbs 10:19 NLT

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.

Proverbs 10:19 NASB

When there are many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable, But one who restrains his lips is wise.

Proverbs 18:21 NASB

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

James 3:2 NLT

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

James 1:19 NLT

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

11. Training For Godliness With Pastor Mike Plummer [Part 1]

We have a special guest on today’s episode, Pastor Mike Plummer. Mike is the pastor at Fillmore Baptist Church in Fillmore, IL. As we’ve visited Mike’s church over the years, we’ve become big fans of his passion for and focus on biblical teaching.

Today, Mike paints a great picture for us as he explains some parallels between physical training and training for godliness. Physical training requires us to sweat, and training for godliness is no different. It will take some “spiritual sweat.” Join us as we learn what it means to truly train for godliness and why it matters.

During our conversation, Mike mentioned the book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1615216170

3. Revealing Our Focus Words To Escape New Year's Resolutions

Many people give up on their New Year’s resolutions after just a month. So, instead of making a New Year’s resolution, we choose a focus word for the year. In this episode, we share our focus words and discuss how we plan to integrate these words into our daily lives. We hope this will help give you some ideas for how to possibly integrate your own word into your daily life as well.

We referenced two books during the episode:

1) "Gospel Fluency" by Jeff Vanderstelt

2) "Storyworthy" by Matthew Dicks

The 'homework for life' concept comes from "Storyworthy."

2. How To Love Your Neighbor

In this episode we discuss what it means to love your neighbor. Can you love someone without liking them and is love a feeling?

We know loving our neighbor is important because Jesus commands us to do it. But what does ‘love’ even mean? And how can we practically love our neighbor?  We'll discuss the definition of love, as well as four principles we believe are necessary to follow in order to love your neighbor well.

During our chat, we referenced the book “The Servant” by James Hunter. We also mentioned a couple scriptures without their reference. Those are below.

2 Chronicles 16:9a (NLT) The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”

James 1:17 (ESV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

1. Escaping New Year's Resolutions

The new year represents a great time to start something new, stop a bad habit or just make a change in general. However, the most common approach, a New Year's resolution, typically fails. We'll discuss an alternative to New Year's resolutions aimed at providing the motivation to act without the likely failure and disappointment that comes from failing to keep a new year's resolution.
