Mormon Movie Reviews - Johnny Lingo (1969)
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! Johnny Lingo (1969) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXIj5zfFsk0 Running time: 23 minutes Synopsis Johnny Lingo (1969) is a film often remembered for its exotic setting and cultural backdrop but falls short in its portrayal of morality and gender dynamics. Set on a Pacific island, the movie follows the story of Mahana, a young woman whose worth is measured by her dowry, and Johnny Lingo, a wealthy trader who offers an exorbitant sum for her hand in marriage, surprising the islanders who had previously deemed her worthless. While the film attempts to convey a message of self-worth and inner beauty, its execution is marred by problematic portrayals of morality and gender roles. The central premise revolves around the idea that a woman's value is determined solely by her dowry, reducing Mahana to a commodity to be bought and sold. This perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces the notion that a woman's worth is contingent upon her monetary value rather than her inherent dignity and humanity. Furthermore, "Johnny Lingo" is rife with instances of sexism and outdated gender dynamics. Mahana is depicted as meek and submissive, existing solely to fulfill the desires of the male characters around her. Her transformation from a timid young woman to a confident bride is framed as a triumph, but ultimately, it rings hollow in the face of the film's underlying misogyny. Additionally, the film's portrayal of morality is questionable at best. Johnny Lingo's decision to pay an exorbitant dowry for Tama is framed as a noble gesture, but in reality, it only serves to reinforce the idea that women are objects to be bought and sold. The lack of agency afforded to Tama throughout the film further undermines any attempts at conveying a meaningful moral message. In conclusion, while "Johnny Lingo" may hold nostalgic value for some viewers, its portrayal of morality and gender dynamics is deeply flawed. By perpetuating harmful stereotypes and reinforcing outdated notions of female worth, the film ultimately fails to deliver a meaningful or uplifting message. Mormon Movie Reviews: Together Forever (1989) Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! today is January 11, 2024, and what are we going to review Together Forever (1987) Link: https://youtu.be/do1tUMzUwTQ?si=C0zynZWsY67rB46i Running time: 29 minutes Rating: not rated Genre: religious drama A brief summary Summary: This is a presentation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints missionaries use to teach people about families being together forever. Several families who have experienced tragedy are chronicled as well as wayward souls who are brought back to the fold. The end of the film testifies that families can indeed be together forever Together Forever, was directed by Michael McClean who also contributed several landmark songs to the film such as the eponymous “Together Forever” as well as “Stay with Me,” and “Be that Friend.” It is a series of four different vignettes of couples or individuals who discuss how they found meaning in life through their discovery of Mormonism, oops, I meant to say the plan of salvation. Although this short film is available on videocassette, the church also broadcast Together Forever on network television. In the beginning of 1989 this film aired in every U.S. city with an LDS mission headquarters. The film won the Catholic-sponsored Gabriel Award and received an 8 out of 10 on a Neilsen TV survey. Together forever repeatedly emphasizes the importance of making time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that, again? This and other similar church videos of this era could be ordered for free through a phone number provided in church purchased TV commercials, viewers could elect to have this and other LDS tapes delivered personally by missionaries instead of through the mail by a postman These VHS tape orders became known to missionaries as Media referrals. As a full time missionary in the 1990s, I remember getting calls a couple of times a week to hand deliver this specific VHS tape to investigators and deliver a message. They really made missionary work a lot easier. The most ironic thing about media referrals like together forever, is that the message we gave had little to do with the video! Instead, regardless of what video they requested, we would give the standard missionary first discussion which covered God, Jesus, and never forget, Joseph Smith Lemme turn up the volume, I think I’m gonna cry…or throw up…. video emphasizes that it is important to make time for families, it doesn’t deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that? Mormon Movie Reviews - Uncle Ben (1978)
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your humble host, Dives, today is Feb 18, 2023, this is episode where we will review EP : Uncle Ben (1978) Link: https://youtu.be/HaR1GgGibQg Running time: 26 minutes Rating: unrated Genre: Drama This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Spoiler alert Synopsis The true story of an alcoholic who seeks custody of nephews and a niece orphaned by an accident. As he faces the challenge to overcome his alcohol problem and be a good father, he realizes a greater reward than he had imagined. Email MormonMovieReviews@gmail.com Never find out why mom dropped dead How does a middle aged woman go from tucking her kids in the night before, to stone dead the following morning? I am not a doctor, but I did a little research, and I’m willing to go out on a limb here that mom died from steadying an ark… Uncle Ben is yet another church movie with a mysterious death. This film reminds me of Cypher in the Snow and the Mailbox where people just die suddenly as a convenient plot device. No explicit COJCOLDS elements in this film, probably in an effort to make this more appealing to a broad non-LDS audience. Released in a set https://ldsfilms.fandom.com/wiki/Uncle_Ben I would love to see a modern remake of this film, but with Uncle Ben’s booze problem replaced by coffee. #Lucifer’sBean Final Thoughts But seriously, this film does send a simple, down to earth good message of the importance of taking care of family and the benefits of avoiding excessive alcohol consumption. The Home Teachers (2004) Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong!
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives EP 65 - The Home Teachers (2004) Running time: 80 minutes Genre: A religious comedy Rated: PG Synopsis "The Home Teachers" is a delightful 2004 Mormon comedy film directed by Kurt Hale. The story revolves around two mismatched home teachers, Greg and Nelson, who are assigned to visit and support a struggling family in their congregation. Greg, played by Michael Birkeland, is a well-meaning but somewhat clumsy and disorganized individual, while Nelson, portrayed by Jeff Birk, is a meticulous and by-the-book perfectionist. Despite their differences, the two are paired together as home teaching companions and tasked with the responsibility of uplifting and assisting the Callister family. The Callisters, consisting of the father Jared, played by Kirby Heyborne, and his two daughters, Sarah and Rachel, are facing a variety of challenges in their lives. Jared, a single father, is struggling to balance his job and parental responsibilities, while his daughters are dealing with typical teenage issues such as school, relationships, and self-esteem. As Greg and Nelson attempt to fulfill their home teaching duties, they find themselves in a series of hilarious and awkward situations, often due to Greg's clumsiness and Nelson's rigid adherence to protocol. Despite their best efforts, their visits to the Callister household seem to only exacerbate the family's problems rather than solve them. However, as they continue to interact with the Callisters, Greg and Nelson begin to realize that their presence and friendship are making a positive impact on the family. Through their genuine concern and willingness to listen, they are able to provide much-needed support and encouragement to Jared and his daughters. "The Home Teachers" is a heartwarming and humorous film that highlights the importance of community, friendship, and compassion. It emphasizes the idea that sometimes, the greatest help we can offer to others is simply being there for them and showing them that they are not alone in their struggles. With its endearing characters, witty humor, and heartfelt message, "The Home Teachers" is a charming cinematic experience that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds, regardless of their religious affiliation. It reminds us that even in the midst of life's challenges, laughter and friendship can be powerful sources of strength and comfort. Conclusion The RM is hilarious, and the singles ward is funny, but the apple fell far from the tree when it comes to the home teachers. I recently spoke with Jim Bennett who plays a small role in the movie, and even he acknowledges that it is a bad film. The film begins with Chris, a troubled teenager struggling with the recent loss of his parents, and Clay, his rebellious younger brother. After an argument with their foster parents, the brothers run away from home and embark on a journey that leads them to an unexpected portal in the woods. Upon entering the portal, they find themselves in the ancient land of Zarahemla. In Zarahemla, Chris and Clay are separated, each encountering different groups of people. Chris meets a kind-hearted Nephite girl named Zarahemla, while Clay is captured by the Lamanites, the enemies of the Nephites. As Chris and Zarahemla embark on a quest to rescue Clay and find a way back home, they must navigate the dangers of the ancient world and confront their own inner demons. Throughout their journey, Chris and Zarahemla learn important lessons about courage, friendship, and faith. They discover the power of forgiveness and redemption as they strive to overcome the challenges they face. Along the way, they encounter various characters from the Book of Mormon, including the righteous prophet Alma and the villainous Amalickiah. As the film reaches its climax, Chris and Zarahemla must confront Amalickiah and his army in a final showdown to save Clay and return home. With the help of their newfound allies, they are able to defeat Amalickiah and find their way back to the present day. "Passage to Zarahemla" is a heartwarming tale that combines elements of fantasy, adventure, and spirituality. While the film's low budget is evident in its production values, the storyline and lame performances from the cast add to its shortcomings. The film laughably brings the world of the Book of Mormon to life, offering viewers a glimpse into the ancient civilization of the Nephites and Lamanites. Overall, "Passage to Zarahemla" is an uplifting and but not at all entertaining film that is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. While it may not have the polish of a big-budget Hollywood production, its heartfelt message and engaging storyline make it a worthwhile watch for anyone looking for a howlingly bad cinematic experience. Truly terrible film. Absolutely nothing redeemable. They ought to put a warning on movies like this. When it comes to the passage of Zarahemla, I’d like to put the DVD into the time portal near Leeds Utah so that no one ever watches it again. Mormon Movie Review - How Near to the Angels REVIEW (1956)
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your humble host, Dives, and I’m here with Mormonish podcasting legend, Rebecca Biblioteca, today is April 23, 2023, this is episode where we will review EP: How Near to the Angels REVIEW (1956) Link: • How Near to the Angels (1956) Running time: 41 minutes Rating: not rated Genre: Religious Drama This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Spoiler alert We will watch this short together while we make insightful and occasionally irreverent commentary. Synopsis Janet is a latter-day saint who wants a temple marriage, but her steady boyfriend, Kent, is inactive. But while Janet attends a church fireside, a young Mormon man named Tim introduces himself and proposes suddenly. Tim’s mission president told him to get married within six months of coming home. Now Janet faces a tough choice. Yes this is an official Church video brought to us by the Young Women’s Mutual Improvement Association which was founded by Brigham Young under a different name way back in 1869. We are a bit lucky to have this film in color because some other church films in this era like ‘And Should We Die’ were shot in black and white. And this film was produced by Judge Whitaker, the most prolific LDS filmmaker of all time. What is the film's overall message? One small step off the straight and narrow like skipping mutual or listening to jazz, can lead to heartache and jeopardize your life plan Hanging out with the wrong friends is nothing but trouble Marriage in the temple is the single most important life event for a young woman No man can compare to a returned missionary who bears a strong testimony Even if a less active Mormon says he will start paying tithing, go to church, and is willing to marry a young woman in the temple, he is not to be trusted A young woman’s personal feelings about her marital suitor are of lesser importance than her lover’s Mormon bona fides Mormon utopia is achieved by going to mutual, attending firesides, playing in the church sports league, getting married in the temple, and of course women bearing tons of kids, bottom line: one’s entire life should be built around the church Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon / mormonnewsroundup Email: kolob@mormonnewsroundup.org Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: / mormonnewsroundup Instagram: / mormon_news_roundup Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... Cipher on the Snow (1974) Mormon Movie Reviews! Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong!
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives, today is Sep 21, 2022 this is episode and will we be reviewing EP - Cipher on the Snow (1974) Running time: 21 minutes "Cipher in the Snow" is a poignant and thought-provoking Mormon short film released in 1974, directed by Kieth Merrill. The story revolves around a tragic event that leaves a profound impact on those who witness it. The film begins with a young boy named Cliff, portrayed by Bruce Kimball, who is depicted as a quiet and withdrawn student struggling to connect with his peers. Despite his attempts to reach out and make friends, Cliff is often met with indifference and even cruelty from his classmates. One winter morning, Cliff's teacher discovers him sitting silently at his desk, unresponsive and seemingly lifeless. The school staff and students are shocked and saddened by Cliff's sudden death, and they struggle to understand what could have led to such a tragic outcome. Through a series of flashbacks and interviews with Cliff's classmates and teachers, the film pieces together the events leading up to his death. It becomes apparent that Cliff's isolation and loneliness were profound, and despite the efforts of some individuals to reach out to him, he remained deeply troubled and disconnected. As the story unfolds, viewers are confronted with themes of bullying, social isolation, and the devastating impact of indifference. "Cipher in the Snow" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and reaching out to those in need. Despite its short runtime, the film leaves a lasting impression, prompting viewers to reflect on their own interactions with others and consider the profound impact small acts of kindness can have on those who are struggling. "Cipher in the Snow" is a moving and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, offering valuable insights into the complexities of loneliness, empathy, and the power of human connection. References A DVD of the movie is available through BYU's Creative Works Office. https://creativeworks.byu.edu/Creativ... Conclusion there’s a lot of people who like to mock this movie, but I WANT to treasure this movie while some aspects of the short are a little far-fetched, you can also take the moral of the movie to its logical conclusion: If I am not kind to others, they will die, which is not a good lesson I remember watching this film as a young boy at church, and while I did think that some of the parts were a little cheesy, the message of the short left me wanting to be a better person. I too experienced divorce and family trials as a youth, perhaps one reason that I connect so strongly with Cliff. Now that I am older and a former public school teacher who taught some potential ciphers in the snow, I also easily find myself sympathetic to Frank. Mormon Movie Reviews - Children of Promise: Jesus in America (1980)
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives, today is Nov 1, 2022, this is episode 138 and will we be reviewing EP 138 - Children of Promise: Jesus in America (1980) • 1980 Children’s Filmstrip for Mormons... Running time: 14 minutes Synopsis Tells the story of two little children in Zarahemla during Book of Mormon times. One girl is a good Lamanite and she tells us that Jesus made her dark skin white because she was righteous. The filmstrip details Jesus' post-crucifixion appearance to the new world in which he anoints his disciples and heals the sick. Film Background Not an official church production 1980 filmstrip by Eternal Quest Productions. Filmstrip #11 of 12, “Jesus in America”. Dramatized telling of the Book of Mormon for children. Email MormonMovieReviews@gmail.com Conclusion This filmstrip is almost comically bizarre, but far from being out in left field, it represents the culture and ideals of a generation; my generation when I was growing up in the church. While The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints once taught that native people in North America and South America were the descendants of the Lamanites and that the Book of Mormon was a history of their ancestors, the church has now backed off of that teaching and says that no one knows who the descendants of the Lamanites are today. Final Thoughts Children of Promise is blatantly racist, anachronistic, historically laughably inaccurate, and particularly harmful for young persons with disabilities. Synopsis
A group of children come to Lethe Tatge's home to hear about the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Film Background
technically speaking, this is not an official church video
this film was brought to us by the visual transit authority under the direction of famed Mormon filmmaker TC Christiansen
please let me know your thoughts on this film by sending me an email to
MormonMovieReviews@gmail.com
Conclusion
The children in this film are doing what Mormon children are supposed to do, accept elders wisdom and marvel at how lucky they are to be born into the one true church
this film is a vehicle for mythologizing Joseph Smith, to make him larger than life, to make him a legend, to lionize him, it never deals with any of Joseph’s troubling legacy, much less bring it up, no sir

EP 74: That Which Was Lost (1969)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzkdiSYmiIQ
Running time: 27 minutes
Rating: PG
Genre: Religious Drama
Synopsis
As Rick becomes associated with hippies, the concern of an adviser and an unpleasant experience help him to realize the importance of some of the things he thought he could give up. Shows how love and persistence can bring back the "lost sheep."
Film Background
This is an official video produced by the COJCOLDS. Along with this version, a non-denominational cut and a secular cut were also produced. But I couldn’t find the other cuts video on the video library churchofjesuchrist.org
Let’s briefly analyze the movie’s message.
Recall the three less active members at the beginning of the movie, the lazy teacher who just stayed in bed, the mother who refused to take her child to primary because she was too busy, and the young woman who liked the latest fashions. Those are the two basic stereotypes perpetuated by the church; less active members are lazy or just want to sin. Rick fits that second mold as well, he doesn’t like the church because he wants to sin.
But the film also introduces a rarely seen third paradigm with Rick and his father, Brother Baldwin is a faithful father, remember, he’s a return missionary, however, as a priesthood holder he is well intentioned but doesn't place a high priority on his son’s welfare. Rick went astray because brother Baldwin didn’t love him enough, as evidenced by his father’s trite obsession with hair length and refusal to spend time with him, like going to the priest quorum activity on the beach.
Finally, let's discuss the final scenes at Turtle’s house, especially Lilly’s manic episode. Deep down, sinners really want to be rescued. They are portrayed as truely unhappy, even though they may present a happy exterior.
The film perpetuates the idea that hippies like Turtle don’t actually care about one another. While they profess brotherhood and ‘free love’, they won’t be there when they are really needed because they are inherently selfish. Turtle bailed on his girlfriend at the drop of a hat, even though she was in serious distress.
Final thoughts
Only righteous members of the church like Larry can be counted on. Hippies are not to be trusted. Fathers need to prioritize time with their children.
The director of the short Wetzel O. Whitaker should have added the following subtitle to this movie: That which was lost: Be like Larry.

Saturday's Warrior (1989): Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong!
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives and will we be reviewing
EP - Saturday's Warrior (1989)
Running time: 115 minutes
This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required.
Spoiler alert
Synopsis
Two siblings make promises to each other in the pre-existence, but find themselves on very different paths once on Earth.
There is a lot to unpack with Saturday’s Warrior. Doctrinal issues, abortion, family planning, child abuse, loss of a loved one, access to emergency medicine during a storm, spandex, big hair. Shall I go on? This is a movie that knows it is cheesy, and embraces it
We never really understand why Jimmy leaves the family for a time. Although we suspect drug use and perhaps some other behaviors it’s never really clear as to why he leaves home. The musical duets and solos really help us understand the characters.
My favorite line in the movie remains when Jimmy sings Sailing on:
There is a distant lamp, that lights the way for me, I hope they hold it high so I can see.
If you hold this movie high, it will be a lamp for your entertainment as well.

Summer of Decision (1962)

The relationship between State College students Bill and Nancy becomes long distance after he transfers to Eastern University after which he starts doubting his Mormon faith. Bill proposes marriage, but Nancy insists upon a temple marriage.

Conclusion
Film sends three primary messages
attending higher education at a school without an institute can lead to apostasy (no international institutes until 1970)
those who doubt the church are lazy
Bill never offers one real reason why he is having difficulty with his testimony. If he just attends church and goes to priesthood meetings, he will be fine.
getting married outside an LDS temple leads to heartbreak and potentially even death
get married in the temple, or be prepared to lose your newly wed wife in a horrific car accident on your honeymoon night, have her turn into an undead zombie, and then lose her again to the mists of eternity.
The summer of decision left me questioning my decision to watch this movie.

Synopsis
Billy is a simple Native American shepherd boy living on the Navajo reservation. His father George heads a tightnit and prosperous Navajo family who starts to occasionally drink with friends, coming home to a tongue-lashing from his wife Nellie. A gifted silversmith, George gradually begins to neglect his work, which provides much of the family income. Then he begins to sell off horses, goats, and pawn his silver jewelry to pay for his habit. Billy leaves his childhood home to further his education while Uncle Bitaani chides George about his drinking to no avail. At first, Nellie begs George to stop drinking but eventually she starts getting drunk as well. Billy returns from school and he and old Aunt Dezba are the only ones left to look after the needs of the younger children, they face hunger and the bitter winds of the harsh winter. With fleeting hope, Billy searches for his parents, hoping to find redemption.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Placement_Program
The Indian Placement Program (IPP) or Indian Student Placement Program (ISPP), also called the Lamanite Placement Program,[1] t had its peak during the 1960s and 1970s. Native American students were placed in foster homes oof LDS members during the school year or LDS run boarding schools.
The program was developed according to LDS theology, whereby conversion and assimilation to Mormonism could help Native Americans, who had been classified as Lamanites in terms of theology in the Book of Mormon. An estimated 50,000 Native American children went through the program.[2][3] The foster placement was intended to help develop leadership among Native Americans and assimilate them into majority-American culture. The cost of care was borne by the foster parents, and financially stable families were selected by the church. Most of these placements took place on the Navajo Nation, with a peak participation of 5,000 students in 1972. The program decreased in size after the 1970s, due to criticism, changing mores among Native Americans, and restriction of the program to high school students as schools improved on reservations. Many of the students and families praised the program; others criticized it and the LDS Church for weakening the Native Americans' ties to their own cultures.

Synopsis
Legendary actor James Stewart plays Willy Krueger, a widowed apartment janitor who lives in a basement flat with his cat George. On a cold Christmas Eve, he daydreams to escape his lonely life: he muses about being a man of culture and means, an ice dance at Temple Square, a sleigh ride, as well as the conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and also imagines himself in the stable with Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus.

Final Thoughts
A man of faith, Stewart played the venerable Mr. Krueger and spoke highly of the TV special, saying he hoped it would help promote the true meaning of that holiday in remembering Christ's birth.
This is always a great film to watch around the holidays. It is charming and magical. Jimmy Stewart will always be an honorary Mormon, and I looked this up on my premium account on ancestry.com, I am so relieved that Stewart’s temple work has been done for him not just once, but three different times just to be sure. #CovenantPath

What projects are you currently working on?
I have two things I try to maintain consistently:
The Mormon Question of the Day: Weekday Polls on Twitter (so follow @Enos_Envy to add your vote)
Could be something simple like “What’s the scariest room in a ward building”
or doctrinal “How many gods exist in Mormon theology”
The Aposties–the annual ExMo Awards on Twitter
I’ll be taking nominations starting in January and we have a panel of ExMos who select the winners which are announced each hour of April General Conference.
We’d really like to host a live Aposties in person at a Chili’s someday–Cultch would have to handle the parody musical numbers.
Shout out to Jacob Hansen for winning 2022’s Mental Gymnast of the Year award. He took home the Fanny (our digital trophy is named after Fanny Alger).
He’s sure trying hard to repeat in 2023, but the competition is FIERCE!

EP 90 The First Vision (1976) - Mormon Movie Reviews Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong
Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! Film Summary In Palmyra, New York in 1820, 14 year-old Joseph Smith Jr. wonders what church to join. He feels that none of the local religions are true and wants a divine answer. One spring morning, he goes out to pray in a grove near his home and starts to pray. He feels an evil spirit trying to prevent him from supplication. But he is freed from this malevolent presence by the most glorious light accompanied by two personages: Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ. Jesus tells Joseph to not join any of the churches because they were all wrong. EP 88: The Three Witnesses (1963) Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong
Movie Summary In 1881 David Whitmer seeks the signature of Gen. Alexander W. Doniphan on an affidavit attesting to his honesty and integrity, with plans to have it published in the local paper in Richmond Missouri with a statement refuting that he had denied his witness that an angel had shown him the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. Whitmer recalls the translation of the book in 1829 while Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery stayed at the Whitmer family home in Fayette, New York. After praying together, an angel shows them the plates. All three are later excommunicated from the church, but as Whitmer relates, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris testified to the end of their lives to the truthfulness of what they witnessed (dying in 1850 and 1875 respectively and after re-joining the church). Doniphan, a lawyer, signs the document and says that he would hate to argue in court against such strong evidence.
