Double Feature

Double Feature

Surprise! Finally here is our "season finale" from our last season. It's fine to giggle a little. I'm giggling too as I type this. But this final episode is really fun and thought provoking because we discuss two short documentaries. First, we discuss the 9 minute documentary (yes, you read that correctly) Single Mother Only Daughter. Here is the synopsis from directornotes.com:

"In Single Mother Only Daughter Hong Kong born, Los Angeles filmmaker Ellie Wen has created a touching documentary exposing her own painfully honest and complex relationship with her mother. The piece is a revealing cathartic emotional journey which we witness unravelling before our eyes. I spoke to Ellie about how the film came into being and how she discovered that exposing her deepest, most agonising memories resulted in powerfully engaged audiences who related deeply to her personal story."

Our second documentary is the Academy Award winning Period. End of Sentence. A synopsis from the padproject.org who helped fund this doc:

"In 2013, Melissa Berton took a group of her students to the Annual Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. There they learned about the problem of period poverty and about Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented a machine that manufactures sanitary pads out of natural, locally-sourced materials at a low cost—just 5 cents per unit.1 His work inspired them to help expand access to menstrual products and menstrual health management education worldwide and to make the documentary Period. End of Sentence."

This is a great episode with laughter, serious conversation, and women truly inspiring other women. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Bethany Hamilton - Unstoppable

Bethany Hamilton - Unstoppable

Surprise! Yes, we FINALLY have a new episode to you all. I (Pamela) apologize for being so, so late getting this episode out, but I promise this episode is a great one. We are discussing the documentary, Bethany Hamilton - Unstoppable and it is incredible. Here is the synopsis of the film.

"One of the most accomplished athletes of her generation, Bethany Hamilton, became a surfing wunderkind when she returned to the sport following a devastating shark attack at age 13. As she continues to chase waves, she also now tackles motherhood."

Also, sorry for y'all being able to hear me breathe so much on this episode. I promise to be investing in a new microphone soon. This was recorded way back in February and some topics are a little outdated.

We will have a new episode next Wednesday, April 7 and in my message, I let you know what we are reviewing. (Also, I am whispering because I am trying to get my toddler to nap. You can faintly hear her in the background begging to get up.) Cheers!

A Courtship

Hello listeners! In this episode, we review the documentary A Courtship. It was an interesting one!

Here is the synopsis off of Amazon Prime.

A documentary about Christian Courtship, an alternative to dating that seeks to ensure purity until marriage. Kelly renounces dating believing that her parents along with God should find her husband. Enter the Wright family who become her spiritual parents. They discover a promising suitor, but when his religious beliefs conflict with theirs, they wonder whether he is the man God has chosen.

Quarantine Check-in #2

Quarantine Check-in #2

As the world continues the various lockdowns for COVID-19, we continue our check-ins through Zoom and tell each other how we are holding up. We are both having some good days and some bad days and we know you all are too. Side note, this episode was recorded several weeks ago before the death of George Floyd and the protests going on. We wanted to make you all aware of our sensitivity to this issue and why we did not post this episode last week. As always, we hope our show brings you some laughs as well as confirmation that we are all in this together.

Podcast Blackout

Podcast Blackout

Hi, mamas. Sarah here.

On behalf of Pamela and myself, I am here to say that Motherhood on Tap condemns all forms of racism and violence. We, along with many others in the podcasting community, mourn the loss of all those whose lives have ended as a result of senseless brutality. To show our support for people of color, we are participating in this week’s podcast blackout and will not be posting our regular episode today.

Pamela and I are well aware that we are two white women and that we exist within a society where we benefit from the color of our skin. It is likely that a lot of our listeners fit into this demographic as well. It would be easy for us to simply ignore the ongoing racial injustice in our country, but we are choosing to use our platform (and our privilege) to stand in solidarity with people of color.

Please take the time that you would have spent listening to this week’s episode to start educating yourself on the systemic racism in the US and how you can be a powerful ally and advocate. There are many educational books and articles available on these topics - I personally just started reading “White Fragility” by Robin Diangelo. If you are able, please also consider donating to organizations that are fighting for equal rights for all people.

Let us never forget those who’ve needlessly died, and let us work to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Quarantine Check-In

We have all been stuck at home now for several weeks due to the COVID-19 virus and feeling a little stir crazy. We decided to "meet up" through a Zoom call and record a check-in episode for you all. Sound quality may not be the best since it was over Zoom and we also had to record really late at night after our children went to bed. We hope you enjoy us discussing the hardships of working from home with kids and trying to entertain them.

Minisode: COVID-19 & Marriage

Minisode: COVID-19 & Marriage

Motherhood on Tap presents Salacious History - Sarah’s podcast about moments in history that were shaped by sex, romance, and people who were generally down to clown. Pamela and Sarah would like to share a recent minisode about how the coronavirus quarantine has impacted married couples...ENJOY!

As the coronavirus continues to spread, the CDC continues to recommend social distancing, which means only leaving one’s home when absolutely necessary, and when you are in public, staying at least six feet away from those around you. The six-foot rule, however, does not apply to partners or family members that you live with. With married couples and domestic partners spending an unprecedented amount of time together at home, what kind of impact does this have on their relationships?

Mom Quizzes (Minisode)

So, we all need a break and some fun, especially right now, so we decided to quiz each other and have some laughs. This was recorded before all of the quarantines happening all over our state and the country, but not a bad idea for a potential Zoom mommies call over coffee or other tasty beverages and quiz each other for a few laughs. We have some links in the show notes where we found our quizzes for this episode. We hope all of our listeners are staying safe and healthy. Bullying – Part 2

Bullying – Part 2

This episode we finished our discussion on bullying. Pamela dives into the signs to look for if you suspect if your child is being bullied and what steps you can take to stop and help your child with the bullying. These steps are for both home, school, sports, etc. She also discusses the other side of the situation, what if you suspect your child is the bully. She offers the signs that your child might be bullying someone and how you can help your child to stop bullying and understand why they are bullying someone. Pamela also highlights the most recent case of a young man who took his own life due to the bullying he received. This segment covers suicide, so please use discretion. Again, we hope this episode is informative and not judgmental because that is not our intention. This is a topic we want more people discussing so we all can help children be successful adults. Difficult Conversations with Children

Difficult Conversations with Children

Hello listeners! We are back with an important and uncomfortable topic. Have you ever been eating dinner and your child asks you an "adult" question and you are not sure how to answer it? Should you be honest? How much detail is needed? Is brushing it off for another time smart or could that affect them from coming back to you with other concerns or questions? It is a lot to think about. We tackle this topic from both professional research and our own personal experiences and offer what advice we found and what might work best and what has not.
