Seth Isaacson on Muzzleloaders and the Rock Island Auction Company

Seth Isaacson on Muzzleloaders and the Rock Island Auction Company

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

Today we are talking with Seth Isaacson, the lead historian at the Rock Island Auction Company. While Seth has an interest in a variety of historic firearms, his personal passion and specialty is with muzzleloaders.

This episode is a packed one, we talk about Seth, the best muzzleloaders of Rock Island Auction Company history, shooting with friends, and more. We hope you enjoy listening!

Raised in a Victorian home in Illinois, Seth has had an interest in history and biology for as long as he can remember. Now, a young father, Seth spend a lot of his time analyzing firearms as they pass through the Rock Island Auction system. Getting a hands-on look with fine original and contemporary muzzleloaders is something many of us dream of, but that is Seth's day-to-day. Whether handling a fine rifle from Jud Brennan, or Alexander Hamilton's personal pistols, each day brings something new.

Muzzleloaders don't just stay at work for Seth, when not researching and writing about fine muzzleloaders he and a group of coworkers from RIA head to the range with their personal blackpowder arms for a day of fun and friendship. From what we hear, Seth and his friends are working on converting more RIAC employees into muzzleloading enthusiasts (an initiative we can get behind!)

Listen to the full episode today wherever you get your podcasts and be sure to check out the Rock Island Auction Company to see great photos of these beautiful muzzleloaders.

Jamie Hancharick talks muzzleloader accessory manufacturing, hunting, and helping those new to muzzleloading

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

This week we’re talking to Knight Rifles Pro Staffer Jamie Hancharick about his muzzleloading accessory designs, muzzleloader hunting, and what it takes to get new people interested in muzzleloading.

Jamie is based in the eastern United States, right on the Chesapeake Bay. Calling himself a seasonal outdoorsman is an understatement, Jamie takes every moment he can to get outdoors. It’s this love of the outdoors that got Jamie hunting at a young age. His first experiences with muzzleloaders were during Pennsylvania’s Flintlock season. Jamie was out hunting with his brother when his ball started broke, leaving part of the rod lodged in the barrel. While this misfortune ended the hunt, it didn’t end Jamie’s interaction with muzzleloaders.

Jamie went home and removed the stuck starter, and let the muzzleloader sit for some time, understandably frustrated. It was this situation that helped fuel Jamie’s interest in becoming a machinist and designer.

Eddie Davenport, editor of "The Skirmish Line" on the N-SSA, Muzzleloading, and Mental Health

Eddie Davenport, editor of "The Skirmish Line" on the N-SSA, Muzzleloading, and Mental Health

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

This week we're talking with Eddie Davenport, the newest editor of the N-SSA's magazine, the Skirmish Line. Eddie grew up in the N-SSA and has won many of their national championships and still holds some records.

It's not all competition shooting for Eddie though, he loves hunting with his muzzleloaders. From traditional sidelocks to a new inline now and then, Eddie loves muzzleloading. As the editor of The Skirmish Line, Eddie hopes to bring a fresh spin to the magazine and engage more readers with all of the cool things associated with the N-SSA. From history to firearms, tools, and trades Eddie's goal is to build on the great history of the magazine and bring it into a new era.

Like all editors, Eddie brings his own perspective to the magazine. 2020 was hard on the N-SSA like it was all shooting organizations and it brought unique challenges to the young editor. Eddie's background as a first responder and EMT helps him think quickly on his feet to add new content and promote the N-SSA.

When he's not shooting on the firing line, hunting, or editing, Eddie is a mental health professional. In a short time from now, he'll be a licensed therapist in North Carolina. Combining his love of firearms with mental health is important to him.

"Firearms aren't the most used item for suicide, but they are the most lethal", he says, "And that's where it's important for people to know they can talk to someone who knows about guns and the shooting sports culture. When they don't have someone who understands, it can be alienating."

Eddie volunteers with "Walk the Talk America", an organization dedicated to "Bridging the gap between mental health and safe firearm ownership. "Walk the Talk America" has spearheaded pro gun mental health advocacy, integrating range time as a form of therapy to help veterans and first responders use the firearms they are familiar with to aid in a patient's mental health journey.

We had a lot of fun talking with Eddie and getting in deep about just about everything covered. Eddie is a great guy and we can't wait to see his work continue at the N-SSA.

Feed Drop: The Evolution of Muzzle Loading with the Backcountry Rookies Podcast

Listen to the full episode today

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

In 2020 we were asked to be a part of the Backcountry Rookies “Muzzleloader March” series as they share insights and history on how muzzle loaders can be used in Western Big Game Hunting to increase odds and lead to memorable hunts.

It was great to talk to Chad about the history of muzzleloaders and how they have changed over time. Be sure to check out the full series from the Backcountry Rookies as they plan their custom build with NMLRA Match Sponsor Arrowhead Rifles and start hunting with a muzzleloader.

This week Chad talks with Ethan Yazel from Muzzle Blasts about the  evolution of muzzleloaders. These guys dive into the origins of the  muzzle loaders and take a walk through history to modern-day firearms.  Ethan is a wealth of knowledge and explains some of the biggest  discoveries that led to today’s long-range muzzleloaders from the  discovery of gun powder by the Chinese to rifled barrels from Germany.  Ethan even talks about shooting competitions with a muzzle loader. This  is a great history lesson, and it leads perfectly into the custom  muzzle loader build show next week.  Don’t forget to check out the  Muzzle Blasts podcast and magazine to learn much more about  muzzleloaders!

Bringing a Muzzleloader Only Hunting Season to Montana - Caleb Hinkle

Bringing a Muzzleloader Only Hunting Season to Montana - Caleb Hinkle

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

Did you know Montana is the ONLY state in the union that doesn't have a dedicated muzzleloader season?

We just got off the phone with Caleb Hinkle, a state representative from Montana who is sponsoring a bill to bring a muzzleloader exclusive season to hunters in Montana.

Read more about Caleb's bill here

Caleb's love of muzzleloading and it's accompanying history started when he was a young boy and his father sat him down to watch the movie "Gettysburg", released in 1993. It was during that first viewing that young Caleb fell in love with American history and it’s companion, the muzzleloader.

Hunters in Montana can use their muzzleloaders during the normal rifle season, but Caleb wants to reward those who hunt with “heritage” arms some extra time in the field. “It can be hard to introduce a new hunting season.”, says Caleb, “We don’t want to step on any toes. The other seasons have their time and we respect that.” Caleb’s bill, Montana House Bill 242, would give hunters using traditional muzzleloaders an extra 9 days in the field.

If you are interested in watching the hearing, you can do so at 3pm Mountain Standard Time online at Leg.mt.gov. Click “Watch and Listen” and then select “Fish and Game”. You can also click here to go directly to the hearing.

We’d like to thank Caleb for his dedication to muzzleloading hunters in Montana. It’s not often we hear of new muzzleloader seasons being introduced, and seeing one lead by a young man such as Caleb shows us there is a bright future ahead for muzzleloading enthusiasts.

Tyler Mazer is the artist behind "Stonefield Accoutrements, but he's also a father, husband, and muzzleloader at heart. Tyler's first experiences with muzzleloaders came from his uncle, who would take Tyler to the range to assist with loading his muzzleloader. As a boy, Tyler's grandfather would pack up the family each year and travel to the NMLRA National matches to compete. While he doesn't shoot much anymore, Tyler's father has passed down a love for muzzleloading and its accompanying traditions to be enjoyed in the years to come.

Tyler was born and raised in Virginia, a hotbed of American history and has loved the outdoors for as long as he can remember. Listen to our full interview today to hear about Tyler's history, his family, and how he finds artistic balance in the world of muzzleloading.

It's always wonderful to talk to young muzzleloaders like Tyler, and we can't thank him enough for taking time out of his day to talk with us. If you are interested in getting started in muzzleloading I hope you've enjoyed this episode.

You can reach out to Tyler online via his Facebook page and his Instagram profile , be patient though, he has two young kids and works a full time job!

CVA Paramount HTR- Everything you need to know | New Precision Muzzleloader 2021

CVA Paramount HTR- Everything you need to know | New Precision Muzzleloader 2021

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

CVA released the latest in their Paramount Muzzleloader line, the  Paramount HTR. It’s available in a .40 and .45 caliber.   Much like the Paramount Pro that we talked about last year, the barrel  in the Paramount HTR is free floating, promising greater accuracy down  range. The barrel is 26” long, threaded with a 3/4 x20 thread.

The Paramount HTR Barrel Twist rates are

1:20” for the .40 cal

1:22” For the .45 cal

The barrel comes with CVA’s Nitride treatment over stainless steel  The HTR weighs 9.6 lbs, making it lighter and easier to carry over long  trips into the woods up up a mountain. One interesting note here on the  specs for the HTR is that it comes with an aluminum range rod. Could  this be a nod to the competitive muzzle loaders out there wanting to get  into precision muzzle loading without needing to purchase a custom  muzzle loader to get started?

To combat what seemed to be an easily lost collapsing ramrod, CVA is  including a MOLLE pouch in the box to help you keep track of your ramrod  while hunting.   The stock features a nice adjustable cheek rest, the internal chassis is  aluminum. You’ve got a Variflame Breech Plug, to go with the solid  “Super Magnum” Blackhorn 209 loads the Paramount HTR Can handle.

“HTR” Stands for Hunter, CVA has built this with hunters at the  forefront of every descision

Here is some more information straight from CVA:   The Paramount HTR is the new addition to the PARAMOUNT Series for  2021, and it will be offered in both .40 and .45 calibers.

Like all of the Paramount models, the HTR is designed to handle   “super-magnum” propellant charges up to 170 grains by volume (119 by   weight) of Blackhorn® 209.  Therefore, the Paramount HTR can provide   muzzle velocities comparable to centerfire rifles.

Paired with PowerBelt ELR 225 grain .40 caliber or 285 grain .45  caliber bullets,  which were specially designed for the PARAMOUNT™, the  HTR can produce  muzzle velocities previously thought unattainable from a  muzzleloader --  like 2850 FPS in the .40 and 2475 FPS in the .45,  which are comparable  velocities to a .300 Win Mag and a .308,  respectively.  But speed is  worth nothing without the accuracy to put  those shots where they belong,  and with its nitride treated, stainless  steel Bergara® barrel, sub-MOA  groups are easily attainable.

Unlike the original Paramount, the HTR (which stands for “Hunter”) has a more hunting-oriented stock design, and it is dipped in the new

Realtree Hillside camo pattern for excellent concealment capability in a   variety of terrains.  While this stock is slightly lighter than that  of  the original PARAMOUNT, it still has an adjustable comb for perfect   eye-to-optic alignment and the internal aluminum chassis that provides a   rock-solid foundation for the action and free-floating barrel.

Truly, the Paramount HTR provides serious muzzleloader hunters with the most long-range capable hunting muzzleloader ever developed.

Talking Shop, Shooting, and Barrels with Jason Schneider of Rice Barrel Company

Talking Shop, Shooting, and Barrels with Jason Schneider of Rice Barrel Company

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

This week we’re talking with Jason Schneider, owner of Rice Barrel Company. Rice barrels has been known in the muzzleloading world for fine barrels for many years now, and with interest in muzzleloading growing, we wanted to sit down with Jason and learn more about how the record setting Rice Barrels are made.

Jason had a background in machining well before he picked up his first muzzleloader. While at work on day, Jason asked a couple of his coworkers about what they used to hunt with and muzzleloaders quickly came up as a topic of interest for them all. Wanting to know more, Jason was pushed to talk to the Rice brothers about getting started in muzzleloading. At the time, Rice Barrel company was a small side business for the Rice brothers and neither Jason or the Rice brothers knew what the future would hold for all of them.

Jason quickly fell in love with muzzleloading after getting started with hunting season. At the time, he joined two local clubs and began traveling with them to matches across the Carolinas, Tennessee, and even to the NMLRA Nationals in Friendship, Indiana. Though he had experience in competitive shooting from his time as a highpower 1000 yard bench rest shooter, the challenge of muzzleloading sucked him in.

Jason’s interest in hunting pulled him west, where he guided hunters in search of big game in the mountains. After the last hunt of the season, Jason’s first call east was to the Rice Barrel Company, where he hoped he could secure a job to help pay the bills, Rice obliged and offered him some part time work in the shop helping with barrel production. Over time, Jason moved up the ranks in the company and began to oversee production. When the Rice brothers began discussing retirement in the early 2000s, Jason stepped in and purchased the company he had fallen in love with many years before.

Jason has now been running Rice Barrels for over 10 years now. The quality of Rice Barrels remains the same, but some of the technology has changed. Jason invested in several CNC machines to make the production of a variety of new barrel profiles easier, they no longer had to hand develop a pattern or master for each barrel. Expanding on this, Jason developed a set of CNC rifling machines, adding even more precision machining to the well known barrels.

Over the course of the interview Jason and I cover a variety of topics, from muzzleloading to competitive shooting, hunting to plinking. It was great to sit down with Jason, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Bob McBride talks Black Powder TV, history, and falling in love with muzzleloaders

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

Bob McBride grew up like many young boys dream of growing up, as far north as you can go in the United States, deep in the Alaskan wilderness. With a father who loved the outdoors, Bob’s life revolved around hunting, winter trap lines, fishing, and exploring the Alaskan bush. As a boy, his family would take yearly winter trips north into their winter hunting camps. Most of his time there would be spent hanging around camp playing mountain man until he began hunting and trapping himself around the age of 9.

“School would let out, I’d drop the books, grab a pocket full of shells, and off I went… I was 10 years old and I could be 20 miles down the frozen river, it was like a highway for a little kid.”

As a young adult, Bob would join the Marines and end up in Houston, Texas. He recalls his time in Houston as an oddity in his life, it was such a change from his home now in the mountains of Tennessee and even more of a change from his formative years in Alaska.

Suzanne Thomson on Portraying Historic Figures, Outdoor Wilderness Ladies, and Historic Trekking

Suzanne Thomson on Portraying Historic Figures, Outdoor Wilderness Ladies, and Historic Trekking

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

This week we’re joined by Suzanne Thomson. Suzanne is known for her portrayal of “Mad Anne Bailey” at living history events all over the United States, but during a year without events, she’s been able to focus more on her organization, “Outdoor Wilderness Ladies”. We talk about that and more on today’s episode of the Muzzle Blasts Podcast.

Suzanne got started in living history by attending local muzzleloading clubs and rendezvous. Being a long time hunter with modern arms, Suzanne loved the competitive muzzleloading aspect of these events, but also the friendships in the evening around camp. Once she was hooked, Suzanne got a hold of a Thompson Center Renegade to shoot with. Her love of muzzleloading changed how she hunted as well, with her Renegade replacing her modern arms to bring more of a challenge to the hunting season.

As living history took up more and more of her free time, Suzanne took interest in the “School of the Longhunter” program at Prickett’s Fort. There she was inspired by author Mark Baker to dive deeper into the history of the United States and the people that started it. She left the School of the Longhunter with an armful of books and ambitions to share the history she loved with as many as she could.  Suzanne loves the historic portrayals done by John and Carol Jarboe, Steve Caudill, and Mel Hankla. She would strive to bring a similar quality to her efforts.

*Suzanne misspoke when she said Anne rode to Fort Lee to get gun powder, Anne rode to Fort Savannah and returned to Fort Lee. She also implied Gallipolis was in Virgina or West Viginia. Gallipolis is located in Ohio. Suzanne did not mean to insinuate in any way that it was Mark Baker was the famous guy who uninvited her on a trek."

From the Muzzle Blasts Archives, 1990, this story from Jean A Taylor-Starr recounts the tale of the first annual muzzleloading moose hunt in Lake of the Woods, Ontario Canada.

The first annual muzzleloading moose hunt and Rendezvous in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada was held amidst the vibrant October color of 1989. Based out of the small village of Sioux Narrows, Ontario, and organized by Dean Crist, this was a new adventure for most of the participants.

The area we hunted is a striking mosaic of inland waterways, islands, and quaint towns with a rural laid-back atmosphere. Sioux Narrows consists of several businesses including lodges with boat rentals and numerous docks for said boats, public, private, and government.

Pushing Blackpowder to the limit | Shooting at 1200 yards with Ian Egbert

Pushing Blackpowder to the limit | Shooting at 1200 yards with Ian Egbert

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

This week we’re talking with Ian Egbert, an active muzzleloading and blackpowder cartridge shooting competitor. Ian was drawn to the history of muzzleloaders after attending a civil war battle reenactment at 8 or 9 years old, but soon fell in love with shooting and competing with blackpowder. At the age of 14 he acquired his first muzzleloader, falling in love all over again. As a young adult, Ian became active in the NSSA ( North/South Skirmish Association. Returning to his roots, Ian participated in NSSA Matches with muzzleloaders from 50 to 100 yards for many years.

14 years ago however, he was drawn to a different type of blackpowder shooting, blackpowder cartridge. After seeing photos and hearing stories about the NMLRA 1,000 yard matches, Ian knew this was something he wanted to shoot. Now, at the age of 39, Ian eats, breathes and lives competitive blackpowder cartridge shooting by practicing, developing his own loads and traveling to matches around the eastern half of the United States.

During our talk, Ian goes into detail about his rifles, loads, practice regime and more, but we’re giving you a basic run down below.

Ian shoots one of three rifles depending on the match and how he’s feeling.

C. Sharps High wall, in 45-70 set up for iron sights or a scope, this has been his main rifle for 2020

Shiloh, which he admittedly hasn’t used much lately.

CTA rifle as a backup iron sighted rifle.

When using a scope, he’s enjoying his DZ Arms 8 power scope, it gives him enough to see and isn’t distractingly overpowered. He’s using paper patched bullets, with a 14:1 Lead to tin ratio. While his bullets aren’t pure lead, Ian mentions that this is a historic recipe used by BPCR shooters in the late 1800s. The tin brings a low level of hardness to the lead, making sure the nose of the bullet does not crumple and stays aerodynamic in flight. In the past Ian primarily used 81 grains of Swiss 1 1/2f blackpowder, but this year he's been using Swiss 2f with great success. In his 45-70 rifle, this load is flying at 1300 fps out of his rifle’s 33” barrel.

We’ve been following more BPCR matches this year as they picked up in the summer and it was great to follow the shooters progress around the country. If you are interested in lat 1800’s blackpowder history, blackpowder competition, or just learning how to be a better shooter, you’ll enjoy this podcast.

Thanks again to Ian for coming on the show, and special thanks to his wife Deanna Egbert, for sharing her photos from the 2020 matches.

Returning to the Wabash | Reliving History by Surviving in a Dugout Canoe with Eli Froedge and Jason Jacobs

Returning to the Wabash | Reliving History by Surviving in a Dugout Canoe with Eli Froedge and Jason Jacobs

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

** The audio is a bit rough in this one, sorry folks. It was a damp,  windy morning during the interview. We're working on upgrading our  equipment to better deal with conditions like these**

One year to the day later, we’re back at the frontier home of Eli Froedge and Jason Jacobs as they recover from another expedition in their dugout canoe. In 2019, the pair set out to travel the Wabash river, not far from Eli’s home, south into the Ohio River.

After 6 days of cooking under the summer heat on the Wabash, they pulled to shore and ended the trek for this year. Jason noted that the trip was wonderful, but played out a bit like a Navy SEAL Challenge. They left the river with their heads high, knowing they had survived for 6 days on the river, a feat not earned by many.

Fast forward to September of 2020, the group announced they would be continuing their expedition in an effort to complete last year’s goal. This year the pair had some more friends to join in on the adventure. Keith and Jen Syers of “Ramshackle Homestead and Survival” would join them in a period homemade bateau, and Heath Hoffmann & son who joined in on part of the trip last year will be joining Eli and Jason once again in their canoe.

The paddle driven armada put in north of New Harmony, Indiana, setting their sights on the Ohio River.

During the 4 day trek, the team covered a total of 80 miles of water, performed a water rescue the Coast Guard would be proud of, traversed class A rapids, and created a lot of memories with good friends. Listen to their full interview now on the official NMLRA youtube channel, or in the latest episode of the Muzzle Blasts Podcast.

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

The Press Release

Hodgdon Powder Company is pleased to announce the acquisition of the  Ramshot and Accurate smokeless powder brands and the Blackhorn 209  muzzleloader brand from Western Powders. This acquisition is effective  October 1, 2020, with the company set to immediately begin shipping  these new products to wholesale and retail customers.  “This acquisition of the Ramshot and Accurate brands further solidifies  our portfolio of smokeless brands and products for our handloading end  users,” said Steve Kehrwald, president and CEO of Hodgdon Powder  Company. “And the addition of Blackhorn 209 to our world-class  muzzleloading brands like Pyrodex and Triple Seven uniquely positions us  to serve the muzzleloading consumer. With these brands, we also add the  capabilities of an additional ballistics lab to continue developing the  data our customers demand from our Reloading Data Center tool and  publications like our Annual and Basic Manuals.”

“Hodgdon has always been a strong competitor in the reloading powders  industry,” said Doug Phair of Western Powders. “The Hodgdon family has  built a robust company. Ramshot, Accurate and Blackhorn 209 will make  excellent additions to the Hodgdon family of powders.”  “For years, our friends have referred to the Hodgdon family and company  as ‘The Gunpowder People’ and this acquisition is another example of our  dedication to the handloader and muzzleloader hunter,” said J.B. and  Bob Hodgdon, co-owners and sons of the founder of the Hodgdon Powder  Company. “We have experience in acquiring the IMR Powder brand in 2003,  the Winchester Powder license in 2005 and the GOEX brand in 2009 and we  plan to put this experience to use in expanding the reach and customer  base of the Ramshot, Accurate and Blackhorn 209 brands.”

Ian Pratt on iron mounted rifles, working collaboratively, and passing along the craft

In this episode, talk with contemporary craftsman Ian Pratt. Ian has spent the better part of the last 20 years building iron mounted long rifles.

Learn more about how Lucas Oil is working to promote shooting sports

As a younger man, Ian saved up enough money and took some time off work to attend the NMLRA / WKU Seminar to learn Lock Building from Jim Chambers. During any break in the class, Ian would run across the hall to catch bits from the House Brothers classes. From there he traveled to their home shop to chat and learn before stepping out to develop his own style of rifle building.

Visit thorbullets.com/nmlra for your chance to win a pack of premium THOR Bullets.

Since taking those classes, Ian and his wife Maryellen have started teaching their own classes in a variety of locations. Both Ian and his wife teach classes at the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi Ohio, as well as at Canter's Cave in Southern Ohio with the Southern Ohio Artisans Guild. If you like Ian's work and want to see it in person, you can find him behind a table and in the crowd at several events during the year including the large CLA show in the fall, as well as several other "Mini" CLA Shows through the year.

Luke Horak | From sparrow hunting as a kid to building modern muzzleloaders with Arrowhead Rifles

Luke's work has been making the round at NMLRA competitions, it was great to sit down and chat with him about his life, hunting, and  Arrowhead Rifles. We'd like to thank Luke for sponsoring our "Long Range  Muzzle Loading Hunter" Match for July 2020. Keep a lookout for the video coverage of that event next week.

Luke has been a hunting and shooting fanatic as long as he can remember, "I was homeschooled through high school.  My brother and I  could usually wear our mom down in 2-3 hours tops and get kicked out of the house for the rest of the day which meant lots of time for hunting,  trapping, and fishing.  In my very early hunting years (probably around  10) my younger brother and I would go on frequent all-day sparrow safaris at the neighbor’s dairy farm.  From there I graduated to squirrels, rabbits, and pheasants.   I have a lot of wonderful memories of chasing Iowa roosters with my dad and brothers. In high school, I  began hunting Iowa Whitetails which have been my primary pursuit for the  last 15+ years."

Frontier Reckoning: The Battle of Fallen Timbers

Frontier Reckoning: The Battle of Fallen Timbers

This week we dive into the Muzzle Blasts Archives and bring you this article on the Battle of Fallen Timbers by Joshua Shepherd.

For the new administration of President George Washington, the first few years of national governance had proved disagreeable. Mounting tensions abroad threatened to entangle the young republic in foreign disputes for which Washington had little stomach; domestically, financial instability endangered the nation with economic calamity. Worse yet, antagonistic ideological factions - pitting those who opposed a strong central government against those who favored increased Federal power -were laying the seeds of partisan political parties.

But perhaps the greatest threat to the new nation lay beyond the western frontier, where a confederacy of Indian tribes had repeatedly bested American forces. The day after Christmas,

1791, Secretary of War Henry Knox presented Congress with the president's plans for pacifying the hinterlands of the Ohio Country. Because the region's hostiles had refused "offers of peace on reasonable terms", Knox requested an unprecedented expansion of the Army. The tribes were flushed with "the pride of victory'', claimed Knox, and "a strong coercive force" was needed to secure peace. Despite the horrors of an all-out conflict on the frontier, as well as the tremendous cost of blood and treasure it would entail, Knox advised Congress that there was little choice. ''. An Indian war of considerable extent," he warned, "has been excited."

He loaned me a shirt and I was hooked | Jason Gatliff from Muzzleloader Magazine

This week we are talking to Jason Gatliff, owner of Muzzleloader Magazine and American Pioneer Video.

A native of Georgia, Jason got involved in living history at a young age thanks to a family friend. By the time he was 16, he began driving himself to rendezvous in the American south. As he grew, so did his interest and involvement in the muzzleloading community. While in college, he published his blacksmith club’s newsletter. This experience gave him a head start when “On the Trail” Magazine came up for sale. With investment from a friend, he had met while camping the rendezvous circuit, “On the Trail” became the first of many ventures for Jason.

Listen to the podcast to hear how Jason went from a young man who enjoyed camping and throwing tomahawks to publishing some of the best articles and videos in the muzzleloading community.

This chat isn’t all business, at his core, Jason loves the muzzle loading community and takes time to trek, camp, and hunt just like his readers. We dive into the shape of the hobby, how it’s changed over his 20+ year involvement, and where he sees muzzle loading and living history in the years to come

By God they made it | The 50th Anniversary of a canoe expedition of the Ohio River from Pittsburg, PA to Friendship, Indiana

By God they made it | The 50th Anniversary of a canoe expedition of the Ohio River from Pittsburg, PA to Friendship, Indiana

The following is an actual account of the three men, Ed Keney, Tom Grant, and Gordon Byrd who set out from Pittsburg, Pa., in an eighteen-foot canoe and paddled 525 miles in 15 days, to the Walter Cline Range at Friendship, Ind. A feat of endurance, determination, hardship, and not excluding the heartbreak loss of equipment. As you follow along with these men, part in the narrative, part . in actual daily entries from their diary, you will see they still have the fiber of the frontiersmen who opened this country.

This story is from 50 years ago nearly to the day. Expedition participant Tom Grant reached out to share his story with us. This episode features the telling of the tell by Tom Grant as well as reciting of the original article from 1970.

Greg Murry on recreating the Crockett Longrifles, the creative process, and more

In this episode we sit down with Greg Murry, the craftsman behind the Crockett Longrifle Project.

After having built his first longrifle for his 9-year -old son in the 1990s, Greg was bitten by the bug of muzzleloader building.  Having never thought himself an artist, he built 4 muzzleloaders before diving in headfirst into making original works.

Greg's work is not tied to a specific medium, he builds long rifles, knives, tomahawks, accouterments, and creates his own version of hanging art he calls "Steel Canvases".

Listen today to hear Greg's story of getting into the world of muzzleloading and how he stumbled into seeing some of the only original Crockett Longrifles in existence and how he works to preserve their history. Greg shares some wonderful down to earth stories about his life and his work. With historic references to back up his work, this episode is a great point of reference for anyone researching the Crockett Family Longrifles.

Greg delivers an exact copy of the original Crockett rifle with a  certificate of authenticity documenting the reproductions serial number,  along with a smoke print of the hand-engraved reproduction stamping die of the signature on the original rifle.

See more of Greg's work on Facebook, where he shares delightful daily videos, and on his website, CrockettLongrifle.com

Greg is currently accepting custom work, you can contact him through his website.

We're under lockdown in Indiana due to COVID19, please see NMLRA.org/covid19 for updates on how this affects the NMLRA. (5/2020)

We're joined by Andrew and Hanna Davies to talk about being NMLRA youth competitive shooters, what it's like growing up in a shooting household and more.

Follow Hanna on Instagram and Facebook

Follow Andrew on Instagram and Facebook

Hanna Davies is 16 and has been shooting since about age 6 or 7. She began shooting black powder trap competitively a few years ago. She has numerous wins under her belt but her most recent accomplishment was tying for first in the NMLRA women’s national championship. When it was all said and done she placed 3rd.  Hanna shoots a single shot shotgun converted By Jeff Fisk to shoot black powder. Hanna began shooting steel challenge matches last year and is progressing quickly. She enjoys the lifestyle and wants to continue to be a better shooter.

Andrew is 14 and has been shooting since at least age 5. He began shooting black powder trap competitively a few years ago. He has numerous successes in black powder trap at the jr level. Andrew likes flintlocks and with the addition of a custom flintlock shotgun by Mike Longstreth has moved into more flintlock clay matches. Andrew is a big fan of the quail walk as well. Andrew also began shooting steel challenge matches last year. He is a high-speed kid.

Both are great kids being raised in a shooting household. They both hunt and fish but are more into shooting as opposed to sitting and waiting for a critter.  Both kids shot at least 13 events last year including both NMLRA national shoots, steel challenge matches, and some sporting clays just for fun. 2020 holds a lot of opportunities for the kids. They are on schedule to shoot the South Carolina state steel challenge championship, matches at Oak Ridge Shooting association, and both NMLRA national shoots to name a few.   They are honored to have the support of the NMLRA, Steel Target Paint and Wiland USA! And look forward to spreading the word about them

"They were good soldiers" A conversation with author John U. Rees

"They were good soldiers" A conversation with author John U. Rees

We're under lockdown in Indiana due to COVID19, please see NMLRA.org/covid19 for updates on how this affects the NMLRA. (3/2020)

This week we are talking to author and historian John U Rees about his new book on African Americans serving in the Continental Army, but that's not all, we head down several interesting rabbit holes on period footwear, recreating Continental Marches and much much more.

A native of Bucks County, born in the year of the Hungarian uprising, and currently living in Solebury,  Pa., John Rees has written over 150 articles and monographs since 1986  on various aspects of the common soldiers' experience. He focuses primarily on the War for Independence and American soldiers’ foodways.

In autumn 2019, John published his first book, "They Were Good Soldiers’: African–Americans Serving in the Continental Army, 1775-1783 (From Reason to Revolution)". The role of African-Americans, most free but some enslaved, in the regiments of the Continental Army, is not well-known; neither is the fact that relatively large numbers served in southern regiments and that the greatest number served alongside their white comrades in integrated units.

A self self-proclaimed obsessive researcher, many of John's articles are published online and accessible for free, if you are interested in hearing more from John, please check out the links to his work in the show notes below.

A natural evolution | Why Nate Bailey is adding a muzzleloader to his traditional hunting gear

We're under lockdown in Indiana due to COVID19, please see NMLRA.org/covid19 for updates on how this affects the NMLRA. (3/2020)

Today we're talking with Nate Bailey of BarebowHunters.com. Nate is a traditional archer and lover of all things traditional. His family was among some of the first pioneers to make the trip west, setting up a shop to service wagons and tools for those that would later come on the Oregon Trail.

Nate started Barebow Hunters, Nate wanted to encourage and support traditional archers. Barebow Hunters strives to return to the roots of bowhunting by learning, sharing and living traditional bowhunting.

Seeking more time in the woods hunting anything he can and wanting to extend his reach, Nate recently completed a Traditions Hawken kit. We talk with him about that process and more in this weeks episode of the Muzzle Blasts Podcast.

The European Powder Flask by Carl Dumke | Historically and Economically | Hornguild.org

This week's episode comes straight from our time at the 2020 Horn Fair with the Honourable Company of Horners. Listen as Carl Dumke, Master Horner, gives a wonderful presentation on the European Powder Flask. This hour long presentation is packed with information and history on an often overlooked subject.

Carl Dumke is a self-taught artist, woodworker, sign maker, and hornsmith with the Honorable Company of Horners (HCH) guild. Over the past fifteen years, he has studied artwork extensively across the United  States and Europe.

Traveling throughout Western Europe he gained an appreciation for Renaissance and Gothic art, which is mirrored extensively in his early work. Upon returning to the United States, he studied arts of the trades at Colonial Williamsburg and began concentrating on styles associated with early American history.

He opened Grinning Fox Studios in 2006 and, fascinated with fledgling art in America, began to focus on 18th- and 19th-Century  tavern and trade signs. In 2008, he became a member of the HCH and started studying hornsmithing and scrimshanding (scrimshaw), advancing to Master in 2014.

Dumke’s work has been featured in various publications and has won numerous awards throughout the United States and Europe. His wares have been featured in the Abby Aldrich Folk Art Museum at Colonial  Williamsburg and in historic homes in Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Valley Forge.

This week's episode is brought to you by Muzzle Loader Magazine. Since 1974, MUZZLELOADER has been the leading magazine devoted to  traditional black powder hunting and shooting. Each issue is jam-packed with articles on hunting, shooting, gunsmithing, do-it-yourself projects, living history,  American history, book and product reviews, and much more!

We're talking with Daniel Howell this week. Daniel has been involved in rendezvous out west for many years now, but in adult life has transitioned into studying and living by "primitive skills". A woodworker by trade, Daniel has continued to travel back in time, so to speak, re-learning what our forefathers and mothers lived by.

Daniel is from the western US, so we get into some of the history and differences between what he studies, versus what someone like me from east of the Mississippi river studies. We talk about the skills and craft behind muzzleloading, as well as its history in the United States and how muzzleloaders went hand in hand with skills like foraging, woodworking, blacksmithing and more.

Today we’re talking with Eric Ewing about his traditional leatherwork and how he got into the traditional craft, hunting and more. He's always been interested in history, in part thanks to his Mother and family love of classic movies. Eric Graduated from the Manhatten School of Fine Arts in 2002 and wasn't sure where to take his skills. he painted off and on for many years, but nothing really stuck. In 2013 he created his first bag, a copy of "The Virginia Bag" as featured by Wallace Gustler. As of 2020, he's made 200 bags.

It was great to hear about his work, but also everything he's trying to do to encourage young makers to improve their work and get out in front of people. He organizes critiques and helps introduce new artisans to older ones they might be intimidated to approach. Eric's work varies from piece to piece. One may be a lovely gentleman's pouch, and the next a rough cut homespun bag with a coonskin flap. Last year he was the subject of a Contemporary Maker Portrait on the Contemporary Makers Blog by Art and Jan Riser.

Follow Eric on instagram for updates on his work, hunting trips and more  @forest_and_fowl

We’d like to thank the CLA Show as well as Art and Jen Riser for their work to promote traditional craftspeople through the Contemporary Makers Blog.

We're joined by Mike Beliveau to chat a bit about muzzleloading history, media and his own work in the field. Mike has been writing for Muzzleloader and Gun Digest Magazines for several years now, but you probably know him from his youtube channel "Duelist 1954". Mike was skeptical of making videos, but ever since his start in 2011-2012, it's become the thing he's most known for.

It was great to have Mike on, he talks not only about his own work, but his personal history in shooting sports, from tv shows as a kid to his first gun, competitive shooting, trekking and more. Mike has done it all over the years and I really enjoyed hearing about it, I think you will too.

A child of the Great Depression | A conversation with Author and Historian Tom Schiffer

A child of the Great Depression | A conversation with Author and Historian Tom Schiffer

This week's podcast is a little different, we are sitting down with Author and Historian Thomas Schiffer about "The History of the NMLRA" and early 1900s Muzzleloading.

Tom has always been a family friend at the range, but I never knew about how much he cared about history. History of the United States, World War 2, and the NMLRA. In 2017 he began writing "The History of the NMLRA", a comprehensive history on the origins of the NMLRA. You'd imagine this book is full of board minutes and photos of men in suits shooting chunk guns, but Tom quickly found out that history isn't so much about the paperwork as it is about the personalities involved.

Tune in to this episode to hear more, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

Check out Tom's Book, on sale now

This month was a little slow on releases with the Christmas rush, but we've got an action-packed January planned. We'll be talking to Mark Humphries of the "Black Powder Maniac Shooter" Youtube Channel at his Annual New Year's Day Shoot. We'll also be heading out to the SHOT Show in late January to bring you Muzzleloading focused coverage of the event.

Master Bowmaker and Archer Navio Occhialini on why he loves teaching, traditional archery, and muzzleloaders

Master Bowmaker and Archer Navio Occhialini on why he loves teaching, traditional archery, and muzzleloaders

We're very excited to bring you an interview with Navio Occhialini in this week's episode. Navio has been a staple of the NMLRA traditional archery range for decades now, he's one of the founding members of the archery range itself and has watched over it at each NMLRA event since it's founding.

We caught up with him Monday morning at the NMLRA National Championships in September 2019 to talk about his personal history in the craft, his bi-annual bowmaking class, and a bit about why he keeps teaching.

On the NMLRA youtube channel, you'll find more videos from Navio about the types of traditional bows, the history of the longbow in America, as well as his walkthrough of one of the NMLRA Archery woods walks, a challenging course with over 40 3D archery targets.
