Mood Disorder’s with Dr Ajufo

Mood Disorder’s with Dr Ajufo

Hello & welcome the audience to episode 1, season 3 of deep roots with NaijaBabeinTexas. I have a fabulous guest, “Dr. Ijeoma Ajufo,” on the show today; she is a licensed physician specializing in Psychiatry. We will discuss mood disorders, especially depression and bipolar, in our communities. In my experience, Africans, African Americans, Nigerian Americans, etc., don’t understand mental health illnesses. We allow the sigma and our religion to impact our ability to ensure our family gets the care they need. People forget that mental illness is as severe as any other health disease, i.e., cancer, diabetes, etc. Our goal is to educate our audience on this topic. Dr. Ajufo and I discuss the causes, risk factors, types, and stigmas of mood disorders. How to recognize the patterns. As well as how to get management and treatment. There are several ways to get care. If you have suicidal thoughts: Please get care immediately by calling 911, going to an Emergency Room, or texting 988 is a Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. For care in Texas: Don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Ajufo at her practice. Gist Corner - Naija’s Election

Gist Corner - Naija’s Election

Well! It’s been a hectic weekend. Nigerians had their elections this past weekend (25-Feb) and as usual, the fraud and irregularities festered this presidential election. The old fathers, don’t want change and let the peoples voices be heard. Wahala dey ohh…

Gist Corner with NaijababeinTexas - New Series on Amazon "Riches"

Gist Corner with Naija Babe: I am sharing my experience with this NEW series on Amazon titled “Riches" Wow…. I watched it this weekend, and it was a fantastic series. It’s only six episodes long. Not happy about that because I want more. Episode 1 is filled with DRAMA—a must-watch. My review on this show is five stars, or should I say 10 ++++ … a Great show, and I am hooked. It can be found on Amazon prime. This is the 1st Season and a new series, and I hope amazon renews for another season with 10 or more episodes. This show is HAWT, and do not miss watching it. Anyone who knows me knows I love watching shows. It’s how I unwind and relax. I can watch anything but not period pieces.  I love mysteries, action, and documentaries. What I love about Riches is that it has a few African cast members, including Nigerians. It’s great to see a representation of myself and our culture in this series. All I can say is watch it. I Love the Naija phrases, Yoruba language, music, and accents. The click hanger, wawu… drama. There must be season 2, please, amazon. I dey beg una. Abby Ajayi created the series Riches (2022), As well as the First Lady (2022) and Inventing Anna (2022). All great... I love her work.  PLOT: With the sudden death of their father, the family is left in disarray to determine the management of the family’s empire. It’s a series based in the UK and filled with drama. Africans are known for secrets, money drama when a parent passes, lies, cheating, paternity issues, etc. Let me not give away the plot; you will not be disappointed. The fashion is on point, and the story plot is around a cosmetic company; we know our peeps don’t play with looking good. I love the presentation of our people managing companies and wealth. We need to see more of that representation. Summary and Conclusion: Thanks, audience, for your time and support. I will continue to share regular gist corners that bring awareness of great content that highlight our people and culture. Get ready for some gist and with no wahala. Please provide your feedback and join in the Polls/ Q & A. Resources:  https://www.amazon.com/Riches-Season-1/dp/B0B8MTCYVM

Going to a therapist is not shame but courage. It shows you want a different outcome from what you have been dealing with.  Therapy often provides an opportunity for value clarification. Values, which may be described as behavioral standards and needs that work to support a person's purpose and vision, are often a guide in decision making, and a particular individual's values can be defined as what that person holds to be right or good.

Season 2/Episode5: Ogechi/Tiffany

  1. Introduction of Tiffany
  2. What is therapy, and why is it important?
  3. Why do people in our community struggle with getting therapy?
  4. How to choose a good therapist?
  5. What is the value of exercise to our mental health?

Conclusion/Thanks

Thanks for taking your time to listen to this topic and Tiffany Uzor for sharing her knowledge. This topic is to provide insight and action to keep our society healthy to live their best lives.  We all deal with stress and traumas, and we need to ensure we encourage ourselves or others to take care of our mental, environmental and emotional health. There should be no shame in going to therapy; I look at it as part of your preventive and proactive care. Don't forget to answer the poll questions and provide your feedback. I would love to hear from you.

The Ugly Truth About the Value of Nigeria Women in 2022

The Ugly Truth About the Value of Nigeria Women in 2022

Introduction to the Episode: Hello & welcome audience to Episode 3 of Deep Roots with NaijababeinTexas.   Last month, specifically March 8, we celebrated “International Women’s Day”. I am going to discuss the ugly truth of my Nigeria cultural rooted issues that continues to discriminate against women, that require changes. Basically, we don’t value our Women in our culture. We must ask ourselves what we want to embody because it not Justice, Kindness, Equality and Humility.  This episode, I will give you some insight into the negatives of what women experience in Nigeria today and what we can do to make changes, we need our men to effect changes. Let’s deep dive into my deep roots. Podcast Topic: We need to Break these Bias Nigerians don’t value our Women in our culture.  Women are objectified, required to cook, clean, bear and rear children, support the men and serve him. Take whatever the man does to her and make her responsible for her man's behavior. By teaching her what she should recognize to do differently, so he does not act in ways that are unhealthy to her or the family.  Insight:  What’s the ugly truth of women in Nigeria?  Why do these behaviors exist? What are our solutions to resolve these issues?  Conclusion: I have promised you; I will be transparent and vulnerable regarding everything that pertains to my culture. It does not mean progress has not been made, it just means we have continued opportunity for growth. We need our men to support the changes and narrative. This topic is to provide awareness, create solutions or participate in existing solutions to be a better society now and for the next generation of women. Ezioma's Experience with Grief

Ezioma's Experience with Grief

Ezioma (aka Aunty Vanessa/Ezi), meaning of Ezioma is "Good Home".
Feel at home with us as we discuss this deep-rooted issue of grief. As a culture, we don't manage grief well. We tend to have an attitude of being strong all the time. Chin up and keep moving vs addressing issues we are experiencing and knowing it's okay to be sad. So, we can deal with it in a healthy way.
Join us, as Ezioma becomes vulnerable and authentic as we discuss the impact, her journey, triggers and personal growth through grief. Our objective is to encourage our listeners going through grief of any sort (death, divorce, health or losing a job) that there is hope, people to support and uplift you.
Everyone's journey is different but here are tips that are helpful to manage through grief:

There are several stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance
Leverage your support system and if you don't have one create one.
The goal is not to go through it alone. Have someone to talk to in your circle, church, etc.
Some are connected through their religion to find hope and direction
When you feel off, please reach out to your primary care physician. Especially when you feel: Anxiety, Depression – sadness or feel stuck
Therapy is a great resource

Thanks for taking the time to listen to our episode. It’s important to emphasize the importance of patience, empathy, support, and community with each other. You never know what someone is going through or experienced or experiencing.

The Nigeria Fashion Industry with CEO Iheyinwa Onwuasoanya

The Nigeria Fashion Industry with CEO Iheyinwa Onwuasoanya

Happy New Year!

I wanted to kick off the year to focus on our dreams and how to accomplish our purpose. I have a special guest Iheyinwa, who is accomplishing her purpose. Iheyinwa is the CEO of DicheWear & ShopDiche, which is an excellent Nigerian American women's clothing brand.

We deep drive into one of Nigerians favorite pass time, which is fashion for our social events.  Nigerians are always ready for a party, i.e., Milestone Birthdays, Weddings, Birth of a Child, Funerals, etc. Of course, we need to dress to the ends for these events. Both our men and women are equal opportunity offenders :), but the ladies, from the shoe, bag to match, the head wrap (Gele) and of course the makeup. No one has anything on us when it comes to fashion.

What is exciting is seeing the fashion industry in Nigerian blossom to the rest of the world. Where major fashion houses are incorporating our designs, tv shows and the movie industry but what makes me proud, is the creation of our own fashion designers that have evolved from the basic wrapper/skirt and blouse styles.

Iheyinwa and I discuss how she got into this industry and her passion for Ankara. She provides the background of Ankara, the different types of Ankara and the evolution of the production houses. We also discuss sizing for my audience interested into getting a piece of her clothing.

DichWear & ShopDiche focuses on ladies ready to wear clothing for work, play and everything in between. You can definitely dress up or down her cloths for any events. I know because I own a lot of her pieces. She is available in the United States and Nigeria.

She can be reached via Instagram or her websites: she offers great delivery as well from nigeria as well.

  • United States:  @shopdiche or www.shopusdiche.com, Etsy-Shop Diche
  • Nigeria: @dichewear or www.dichewear.com.ng

It’s always a season to shop :), check out her beautiful pieces to look HOT all year long.

Don't forget to get vaccinated and wear your mask. Be safe and healthy.

Thanks for listening and hope you enjoyed this episode.

The Positives, Values and Importance of Friendship

The Positives, Values and Importance of Friendship

Listen as I deep dive into the positives, values and importance of friendship. I hope you learn from this episode and please share your thoughts by sending your voice messages or responding to my Q & A.

For the last few years, I understand and appreciate the friendships in my life. For me, I have friends from different backgrounds, and they are not just high school or college classmates that I cherish.  I worked for a company, during their annual surveys, would ask if I had a friend in the workplace? Now, I understand the reason & value of that that question.

We all need friends to support, guide and have fun with through our life journeys. We all need people to learn from, confide in, trust, be ourselves, respect, love unconditionally and to be there when you need them in any capacity. I used to be closed off and held everything close to my chest or should I say vest :). I have learned, sharing and opening up to others, reminds me that I am not alone, eliminates judgement of myself and others but most importantly I learn to be empathetic and loving to others.

Thanks for my support system, that include but not limited to the following: sisters, brothers, Chuks, Kenechi, Uzor's, Funmi, Jane, FGGC Benin sisters, Emeka, Bunmi, Kenny, Bukky*2, Folake*2, Rinu, Ifeoma, Rekiat, Sammy, Debo, Odun, Ade, Goke, Ike, Cara, Kaykay, Naija Group, this list is long, but you get the point. Without them, I would not be who I am today. I love all my friends; they all bring me joy and I value and respect them all. Be Safe and Healthy during the holiday season. Wear your mask and get vaccinated.
