Overton Window...but for Food
he human body needs to eat real food most of the time in order to survive and thrive. Today we use the idea of the “Overton window” to assess our diets and look at a strategy for influencing and creating change within our diet.
Actionable Change
To obtain health, give the body what it needs and stay away from what it doesn’t. We are firm believers in the idea that we are “reformed and always reforming”. Meaning there is always opportunity to continue to challenge what we do and move closer to an optimal state of human flourishing. In this episode we discuss that process of continually assessing and changing and how to turn new behaviors into repeatable tasks
What is your favorite recreation activity?
The human body needs times of work and times of recreation in order to survive and thrive. If you’re like me, you tend to fall heavily on one side of the spectrum and your recreation muscles are a little weak. This week we talk through some of our favorite ways we recreate and how to bring some order to this arena.
Sleep Environment
The human body needs sleep in order to survive and thrive. EVERYBODY knows “you’re supposed to get 8 hours of sleep” but that blanket statement about the quantity of our sleep is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to looking at overall sleep hygiene. So the piece we are looking at today is in regard to the environment you’re sleeping in. Is cool? dark? quiet? calm?
Rhythms of Rest
The human body needs times of rest in order to survive and thrive. We are also extremely habitual creatures. All of the principles should be practiced in a rhythmic and structured way. Rest is no different. In this episode we talk about rhythms of rest we have cultivated on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
What makes you feel like you’re working as hard as you possibly can?
The human body needs to be physically challenged in order to survive and thrive. Most of the time that challenge should come in a dose that is appropriately challenging and allows us to have adequate recovery day over day to remain active while progressively gaining strength and capacity. Every once in a while we should push our bodies to a place we don’t go to every day to maintain access to that ability. The question is, what tools allow you to get there safely?
Can you touch your toes?
The human body needs access to its full physical potential in order to survive and thrive. One of those positions being full flexion at the hip. To assess this we simply ask, can you touch your toes?
How do you stay active through the winter?
The human body needs to move in order to survive and thrive. Cold temperatures, snow, and limited sunshine really put a damper on that throughout the winter months. How do you combat this?
