#102: "Secret" Option Number Three
When we are in that intense moment of temptation, when that intense craving is flooding us to pull up that image or website, we typically only see two responses. Either we give in to the craving, or we try to RESIST the craving.
And this is a serious conundrum, because these are both terrible options.
If you want to live a life free of the downward cycle of porn doom, then giving in is not a good option.
But if you've ever tried to resist the temptation and the craving, then you know how difficult this is as well. Resisting the craving can almost never give you a winning track record, and as the saying goes, "what you resist, persists."
Both options are lacking. And if neither one will lead to lasting freedom, then what in the heck are we supposed to do in those inevitable moments of temptation and craving?
The life-saving news is that there is a third option. In this third option, you don't have to try and resist, you don't have to give into the behavior that you want so desperately to stop, and this third option is actually the option that finally set me free from a 20+ year porn addiction.

Oftentimes, when we feel an urge to do that behavior that we don't want to do, it can feel like this big, overwhelming force. We experience it as a powerful tidal wave that seems to take over and drive us to do what we don't want to do. It feels too powerful, too immense to resist.

On the freedom journey, there can be some intense moments. Maybe you've made a decision, and you're committed to being done with porn, to move on to something better and brighter. But though you've made the commitment, you still feel that familiar temptation, that craving. And it is still intense.
Just because you've made a decision to pursue freedom and be done with porn, this doesn't magically make the urge stop appearing. You're now having to face the crux and the front line of your journey: how to experience that intense urge, AND not give in to it. And not just one time, but many times.
In addition to having a clear, effective, actionable plan in place, something else greatly impacts those intense moments of temptation: What you're thinking.
How you THINK about that intense feeling, and what you're believing in that moment, can either aid you and give you that extra boost you need, or it can hamstring you, and make the experience of that urge even more difficult than it already is.
In the next two episodes of this podcast, I'm going to share two thoughts/beliefs that I regularly remind myself about when I'm feeling tempted to watch porn. And it helps me tremendously to get through that feeling, to go through it and to process it.

#79: How to Get Unstuck
Pain is often a powerful catalyst for change. Few things motivate us more than pain that we're experiencing, or the fear of future pain.
When it comes to pursuing real freedom from porn, what are YOUR catalysts? What pain have you experienced because of porn? What pain are you currently still experiencing? What future pain do you desperately want to avoid?
It's been said before that to create change, we need REASONS. #73: Make Your Enemy Your Friend
Back a couple episodes ago, we looked at three "mistakes" that I was making for many years in my pursuit to be free from porn. And I believe that these are very common mistakes that so many guys are making right now, possibly including yourself.
In the previous episode we drove a bit deeper into the first mistake that I was making, which was tracking my streaks rather than my wins. And in this episode we're going to dive a bit deeper and get a little more practical around the second mistake that I was making.
This second mistake that we're going to dive into today is viewing the urge to watch porn as an enemy, rather than as a friend simply trying to help.
Now, you may not even be fully aware of how you SEE that urge. You may not even be THINKING about how you THINK about your struggle! I never did. It never dawned on me to explore how I VIEWED that desire within me.
But this is absolutely huge to explore for yourself, because how you view your desire for porn will directly determine how you HANDLE and RESPOND to that desire when it hits you. The way you see your desire for porn is your internal roadmap, your automatic response, to how you will handle that urge when it hits you, and whether that response is an effective strategy, or an ineffective strategy.
This is why our perspective on our struggle is not only essential, it will significantly (if not absolutely) determine whether or not you will achieve freedom, and how QUICKLY you will start experiencing it. This is why it's so important to examine and discuss your PERSPECTIVE, and how you view your desire for porn.
In this episode we're going to discuss why viewing this struggle as an enemy, rather than as a friend, hindered my progress rather than helped it. I'm going to give you one specific exercise you can do immediately that will help you make this shift, and put you in a better position to effectively handle and process the next urge that you feel, and build that skill that will lead you to the exhilarating freedom that I know you desperately want for yourself.

#71: Don't Make These Three Mistakes
When trying to stop watching porn, there are a few default habits that we tend to fall into, ways of going about trying to pursue freedom. We usually don't question the approach we're taking. We just start doing what seems to make the most sense.
And if we're not seeing results, we figure we just have to try harder.
Back in episode 41, we discovered that when it comes to HOW to pursue freedom from porn, what appears "obvious" is often not the case. We sort of default our way into the HOW, not realizing that the default, common sense way of doing it may actually not be the most effective.
And actually, the common sense way can actually hinder our progress.
This is what I gradually discovered when I finally started experiencing the exhilarating freedom that I didn't know was possible.
When I shifted my approach, freedom came not be trying harder, but by doing things differently.
As I discovered a different way to take steps towards freedom, there were three specific things that I had gotten in the habit of doing previously. They seemed to make perfect sense, but I started to see that they were not helping me. They may have actually been part of the reason WHY I had been experiencing freedom in the first place.
In this episode, we're going to look at each of these three "mistakes" that I made, and that I think most guys are currently making as well. And most importantly, we'll discuss what you can start doing INSTEAD, that will help you finally start to gain some serious traction. #70: Perform the Pause, Clarify the Cause

Those obstacles of difficult feelings that arise in the moment, are actually where your growth and progress BEGIN. In other words, they are not barriers, they are doorways. Those difficult feelings are your frontiers.
And if you can learn the skill of moving through those difficult emotions, on the other side is that vision of the man you truly want to be. On the other side is freedom.
