Episode 76: Bassey & Iwobi both score as Fulham stun Man Utd at Old Trafford + Osimhen back to scoring!

Iwobi and Bassey scored the goals for Fulham that earned them a win against Man United at Old Trafford. Calvin Bassey opened the scoring in the 65th minute and Manchester United had to start chasing the equalizer till the end of the game, Harry Maguire found the equalizer in the 89th minute, but Alex Iwobi and Fulham had other plans. Substitute, Adama Traore set up Alex Iwobi in the 7th minute of stoppage time and Alex Iwobi made no mistakes when he cut in and slotted the ball into the left-hand side of the net. It was lovely to see two Nigerians win such a big game for their team

Taiwo Awoniyi assisted Niakhate’s first half goal. He was taken off at half time and will be assessed as he really hasn’t returned to full fitness.

Emmanuel Dennis scored Watford’s only goal in their loss at home to Huddersfield. Dennis put his team up in the 55th minute, but goals in the 70th and 83rd minute from Danny Ward won the 3 points for Huddersfield and leaves Watford 11th in the EFL Championship

Victor Osimhen returned to the starting lineup for Napoli in their UCL round of 16 home game against Barcelona. Robert Lewandowski put the visitors ahead in the 60th minute before Osimhen pulled on back for Napoli in the 75th minute to earn a draw before heading to Barcelona for the return leg on March 12.  Away at Cagliari, Osimhen put his team up in the 65th minute and Napoli seemed to be on their way to a victory that would have moved the team up to 8th, but Zito Luvumbo scored a 96th-minute equalizer for both teams to share a point.

Cyriel Dessers scored two goals against Hearts in Rangers home game against Hearts. Rangers won the game 5-0. Dessers continues his wonderful season in which he now has 16 goals and 5 assists in all competitions. Could be catching the attention of some clubs in the top 5 leagues.

Ebenezer Akinsanmiro (19) made his Inter Milan debut in their away game against Lecce in which they won 4-0. Inter remain 1st on the table. Akinsanmiro had previously played for Remo Stars and Inter’s U-19 team.

The Super Falcons defeated the indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 1-0 in the Moshood Abiola national stadium in Abuja. Esther Okoronkwo scored Nigeria’s only goal in the 2024 Olympics qualifying match and the team will face the winners of the South Africa vs Tanzania game which will be played tomorrow. Their next match will be in April against South Africa

Other performances to note:
Moses Simon got the assist for Nantes’ only goal in their 1-0 win against Lorient. Nantes now 12th in the league from 16th

Yira Collins Sor scored Genk’s only goal against in their 1-0 win against Chaleroi

Episode 68: Zaidu Sanusi scores 1st Champions League goal in Porto win & Lookman scores winner for high-flying Atalanta in Serie A

Zaidu Sanusi came off the bench to score his 1st ever Champions League goal as FC Porto brushed aside Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Tuesday night!

Prior to that in Italy, Ademola Lookman scored his 2nd Serie A goal of the season, which was the winner as Atalanta beat Fiorentina 1-0 to stay 2nd in the league

In the Premier League, Alex Iwobi bagged his 3rd assist of the season for Everton as they came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 away with Joe Aribo netting the solitary goal for the Saints, which was his 2nd of the league campaign

Chidera Ejuke bagged his 3rd consecutive assist in the Bundesliga in Hertha Berlin’s 1-1 draw against Kevin Akpoguma’s Hoffenheim over the weekend at home as he put on yet another impressive performance

In Belgium, Paul Onuachu finally scored his 1st league goal of the season for 2nd placed Genk, who beat KV Oostende away over the weekend

We also saw Peter Olayinka get on the scoresheet for Slavia Prague in their 3-0 win over Slovan Liberec while Chidozie Awaziem scored the winner for Hadjuk Split in their 1-0 win over HNK Rijeka

In international news, the Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Algeria over the international break with Terem Moffi getting on the scoresheet resulting in Nigeria dropping in the World Rankings from 31st to 32nd earlier today while the Super Falcons lost 2-0 to Japan earlier today

The NFF have voted in a new president Ibrahim Gusau who will take over from Amaju Pinnick and the NFF also announced a friendly match in November against Costa Rica taking place in the USA

Episode 66: Ejuke bags assist in Hertha Berlin draw & Onyedika’s Club Brugge thrash Sanusi’s Porto 4-0 in the Champions League

Chidera Ejuke bagged his first goal contribution in the Bundesliga with an assist in Hertha Berlin’s 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend at home & looked generally lively for his new club

In Portugal, Saviour Godwin continued his great start to life in the Portuguese top-flight with a goal in Casa Pia’s 3-2 win away to Pacos Ferreira leading to the newly promoted side impressively occupying 6th spot in the Primeira Liga after 6 games so far

In France, Moses Simon scored a consolation goal in Nantes 3-2 loss away to Terem Moffi’s Lorient side, who are currently occupying the 4th spot in Ligue 1 after an impressive start to the season helped by Moffi’s 5 goals in 7 games so far this season

In the Champions League, Raphael Onyedika played 90 minutes and looked very assured in the middle of the park during Club Brugge’s 4-0 win over Zaidu Sanusi’s Porto on Tuesday night with the Belgian side securing maximum points from their first 2 games in this season’s group stage and I fully expect Onyedika to receive his maiden call up to the Super Eagles later this week

Calvin Bassey also put in yet another good performance in the Champions League for Ajax as they narrowly lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night

In international news, I anticipate the release of the Super Eagles squad list for the Algeria friendly over the coming days & I also ran through the Ones to Watch over the next few days in Europe & the respective leagues

Episode 65: Consecutive clean sheets & assists for Bassey as he makes his UCL debut + Moffi hits 5th Ligue 1 goal of the season after 6 games

Episode 65: Consecutive clean sheets & assists for Bassey as he makes his UCL debut + Moffi hits 5th Ligue 1 goal of the season after 6 games

Calvin Bassey’s reputation continues to grow massively as he’s been in excellent form for Ajax, initially starring & getting an assist in their 4-0 win league over Cambur over the weekend before making his UEFA Champions League debut on Tuesday against his former team Rangers. He went on to get another clean sheet & assist as Ajax ran out comfortable 4-0 winners on the night! He is easily the present & future of the national team’s defence and he needs to be a certain starter at left centre-back going forward ideally alongside Kevin Akpoguma of Hoffenheim who has also started the new season well.

In France, Terem Moffi continued his excellent start to the season by netting his 5th Ligue 1 goal in 6 games on Wednesday as Lorient beat Lyon 3-1 at home to move up to 5th position on the table. He is arguably the most in-form Nigerian striker in Europe right now and looks well on course to surpass the 14 league goals he scored for Lorient in the 20/21 league season

In Spain, Umar Sadiq scored his 3rd La Liga goal in 4 games this season while making his debut for new club Real Sociedad in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid over the weekend & he could be in for a monumental season if he can maintain his form. Samuel Chukwueze is also back in form after notching a goal & assist in the UEFA Conference league 4-3 win for Villarreal against Lech Poznan on Thursday night

In Italy, Ademola Lookman starred for top of the table Atalanta and notched an assist in 2-0 win away to Monza on Monday night while in England, Kelechi Iheanacho scored his 1st Premier League goal of the season as Leicester continued their poor start to the season with a 5-2 loss away to Brighton on Sunday with Wilfred Ndidi having a game to forget at centre back as he gave away a penalty.

In transfer news, Super Eagles captain made the move from Fatih Karagumruk to Sivasspor and made his debut off the bench on Thursday in their 1-1 UEFA Conference league draw against Peter Olayinka’s Slavia Prague with Peter also scoring his team’s sole goal of the game

Episode 64: Moffi scores back to back brace for Lorient & Sadiq scores winner for Almeria before completing transfer to Real Sociedad

Episode 64: Moffi scores back to back brace for Lorient & Sadiq scores winner for Almeria before completing transfer to Real Sociedad

In France, Terem Moffi seems to have regained his 20/21 season form as he bagged a brace over the weekend in Lorient’s 2-1 win at home against Clermont Foot before scoring another 2 goals on Wednesday night in a 5-2 loss away to Lens leaving him as the 4th top scorer in Ligue 1 so far with Lorient sitting comfortably in 7th place. Moses Simon was also on target over the weekend in Nantes 3-1 home win over Toulouse before he unfortunately suffered an injury that should keep him out for two weeks

In Spain, Umar Sadiq scored his 2nd La Liga goal in Almeria’s 2-1 win over Sevilla before he completed a transfer to Real Sociedad on Wednesday night where he will replace Alexander Isak as their man striker after the Swede moved to Newcastle in the Premier League

In Belgium, Victor Boniface opened his account for Union St Gilloise in a 2-1 win over Anderlecht over the weekend before grabbing an assist in their 4-2 loss on Wednesday against Alhassan Yusuf’s Royal Antwerp who currently top the table.

In the Premier League, Alex Iwobi continues to put in impressive performances despite Everton’s struggles and he grabbed an assist on Tuesday night in Everton’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds United.

In transfer news, highly rated Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika completed a move to Belgian giants Club Brugge and is in line to make his debut tonight against Cercle Brugge and he could also make his Champions League debut on Wednesday when they take on Bayer Leverkusen at home

Episode 59: NFF confirm appointment of Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles head coach on 1 year contract & Awoniyi reaches 15 Bundesliga goals for the season

Episode 59: NFF confirm appointment of Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles head coach on 1 year contract & Awoniyi reaches 15 Bundesliga goals for the season

The Nigeria Football Federation announced the appointment of Jose Peseiro on a 1 year deal on Sunday with the Portuguese manager expected to charge of the upcoming friendlies against Mexico & Canada as well as the AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone & Mauritius. Usman Abdallah will be the 3rd Assistant while Eboboritse Uwejamomere will be the Match Analyst & Ike Shorunmu will be the Goalkeepers’ Trainer.

I also ran through how our Super Eagles players performed in the top European leagues over the past week including Taiwo Awoniyi scoring a brace on the last day of the Bundesliga season in Union Berlin’s 3-2 win over Bochum to reach 15 league goals & 20 goals in all competitions to cap off a very impressive season in Germany as his side finished 5th to qualify for the Europa League

In Italy, Victor Osimhen scored his 14th league goal of the season for Napoli in their 3-0 win over Genoa over the weekend. David Okereke also scored his 7th Serie A goal of the season for Venezia in their 1-1 draw away to Roma as their relegation was confirmed.

In European football news, Asisat Oshoala will be competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final this Saturday for Barcelona against Lyon & she ended her league campaign as the league’s top scorer with 20 strikes, which is super impressive considering her spells on the sideline during the season.

Also Rangers Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey & Leon Balogun will contest the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt this Wednesday in Seville with the chance to secure both a prestigious trophy and Champions League football for next season if they win the final.

Episode 58: NFF announce Nigeria squad for Mexico & Ecuador friendlies, Sanusi goal clinches league title for Porto + Simon’s Nantes win French Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation announced the Super Eagles squad list for the friendly games taking place in the USA against Mexico at the AT&T stadium in Texas on Sunday May 29th and against Ecuador on Friday June 3rd taking place at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey including a recall for Cyriel Dessers & a first call up for Royal Antwerp’s Alhassan Yusuf. The NFF also called up 8 home based players but surprisingly excluded the Bundesliga pair of Taiwo Awoniyi & Kevin Akpoguma although we anticipate a separate list to be released in the next fortnight for the AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone on June 9th and Sao Tome on June 13th.

I also ran through how our Super Eagles players performed in the top European leagues over the past week including Zaidu Sanusi having the best day of his career scoring the winning goal in stoppage time for Porto away to Benfica over the weekend to clinch the Portuguese league title in style!

In France, Moses Simon’s Nantes won their first trophy in 21 years by beating Nice in the French Cup final!

Feyenoord & Cyriel Dessers will also be competing in a European final for the UEFA Conference league against Jose Mourinho’s Roma after beating Marseille 3-2 on aggregate following a 0-0 draw at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Thursday! He then followed that up with a brace in Sunday in a 2-2 draw at home against 2nd place PSV Eindhoven

In international news, the NFF have been ordered by FIFA to pay Gernot Rohr the final sum of his contract (reportedly $377,879.46) which was terminated early late last year prior to the January Africa Cup of Nations

In international news, the NFF have been fined by FIFA for the crowd trouble following the Super Eagles World Cup qualifier loss to Ghana and the Super Eagles will have to play our 1st AFCON 2023 qualifier at home against Sierra Leone without any fans. The Super Falcons have been drawn into Group C for the AWCON kicking off in July against South Africa, Botswana & Burundi and they’ll need to finish as one of the top 4 teams to book a place in next year’s women’s World Cup taking place in Australia & New Zealand

I ran through how our Super Eagles players performed in the top European leagues over the past week including Victor Osimhen scoring the opener in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Ebuehi & Okereke’s Venezia. It was his 1st start in Serie A since he fractured his cheekbone on November 21st against Inter Milan at the San Siro and the win moved Napoli within a point of Inter Milan in the title race with both teams set to face each other on Saturday in Naples.

Kelechi Iheanacho was also on the scoresheet for Leicester as they crashed out of the FA Cup after losing 4-1 away to Nottingham Forest while in Belgium, fit-again Paul Onuachu got an assist in Genk’s 2-0 win over Zulte Waregem

The Nigeria Football Federation also announced earlier today that Augustin Eguavoen will remain in charge of the Super Eagles for our crucial World Cup qualification double header against Ghana with Super Eagles legend Emmanuel Amuneke also drafted in to become his primary Assistant Coach

Finally, Senegal were crowned Champions of Africa on Sunday after beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw with Sadio Mane scoring the winning penalty to bring Senegal their 1st ever continental title

Episode 46: Super Eagles vs Tunisia Round of 16 Game Preview & Nigeria will face Ghana in March for a World Cup spot!

Episode 46: Super Eagles vs Tunisia Round of 16 Game Preview & Nigeria will face Ghana in March for a World Cup spot!

Nigeria fielded a line up with 8 changes against Guinea-Bissau to round up the group stage, winning 2-0 courtesy of goals from Umar Sadiq and on-field captain William Troost-Ekong to claim maximum points so far. Moses Simon also had another incredible game after coming on as a substitute culminating in him and Troost-Ekong being named in the XI of the group stages.

As a result of finishing 1st, Nigeria will play Tunisia in the Round of 16 on Sunday night in Garoua after the Carthage Eagles lost 1-0 to Gambia to finish 3rd in Group F in a game where they missed their 3rd consecutive penalty at the tournament.

I previewed the game in detail on the podcast as I expect Augustine Eguavoen to retain the starting XI who played against Egypt & Sudan for the crucial fixture

Also, earlier today, the draw for the World Cup qualification playoff round took place with Nigeria drawn against our close rivals Ghana for a place at the world’s greatest sporting event taking place in Qatar later this year.

It’ll be the first competitive fixture between both countries since the 2010 AFCON semi final and I fancy our chances of coming through the tie. The first leg will be played in Ghana on Wednesday March 23rd before the return leg in Nigeria on Saturday March 26th or Sunday March 27th
