In Conversation with Ally Wilkes: Part Three
Ally Wilkes’ debut, the Antarctic tale of terror All The White Spaces, formed the focal point of our very first podcast, so we’re delighted to have her on the podcast to discuss her second novel, Where The Dead Wait, in which she returns to the frozen wastes, this time those of the Arctic. So wrap up warm and join Gemma and Simon as they talk sub-zero temperatures, queer subversion and cannibalism with Ally Wilkes.

In Conversation with Sarah Peploe, Fraser Campbell and Gavin Mitchell about... The Berg
Beneath the streets of London, in the capital’s ancient sewers, something is growing out of all the things we try to flush away. A fatberg: a solidified mass of fats, grease and non-biodegradable waste. But as a group of sewer workers down to deal with a blockage are about to discover, this one’s different. Because it’s alive…
Gemma Files and Simon Bestwick loved this dark and gruesome graphic novel, and they think you will too. So join them as they talk to writers Sarah Peploe and Fraser Campbell, and artist Gavin Mitchell, about The Berg.
If you’d like to help support Sarah, Fraser and Gavin in getting The Berg out there, there’s still time to contribute to the Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/frasercampbell/the-berg-1

Demian Regna's 'Terrified': Part One
Join Gemma Files and Simon Bestwick as they begin exploring this 2017 film from Argentina, in which a string of bizarre incidents in an ordinary city neighbourhood escalate to a nightmarish conclusion. The terror of the unknown, the fragility of all we know and love, and utter randomness of events that can unravel our whole world: it's all here in Demian Regna's - appropriately - terrifying film.

Lynda E. Rucker is one of the finest practitioners of weird fiction in contemporary horror, and the latest collection of her strange and subtle fiction, Now It’s Dark, is out now from Swan River Press. In the third of this four-part interview, she talks to Gemma and Simon about the creative process, the idea of fiction as dreaming with your eyes open and the importance of grounding the weird in the mundane. We’ll also be discussing Lynda’s love of experimental film and her thoughts on the short story versus the novel as a vehicle for strange fiction.

Lynda E. Rucker is one of the finest practitioners of weird fiction in contemporary horror, and the latest collection of her strange and subtle fiction, Now It’s Dark, is out now from Swan River Press. In the first of this four-part interview, she talks to Gemma and Simon about the influence of Robert Aickman, the role of horror fiction, the folk horror film Ynys Men, and the power of the ambiguous endings that we find in so many of her stories.

'Penda's Fen' by David Rudkin: Part Three
The 1973 television play Penda’s Fen, written by David Rudkin is an extraordinary work that still unsettles, beguiles and astonishes fifty years after it was made, and stands as a classic of folk horror. It revolves around a series of revelations and supernatural encounters that lead a teenage boy, Stephen Franklin, to question everything he’s holds certain – his sexuality, his religion, his right-wing political beliefs and his very identity as a ‘son of England.’ In the final part of our conversation about this film, we talk about the fundamental questions the film poses, and how Stephen tries to answer them.

19: Lesbian Horror: Part Four
We couldn’t talk about lesbian horror without discussing the work of Shirley Jackson, so this week Gemma and Simon turn their attention to her along with the stories of Hailey Piper and Caitlin R. Kiernan, in the final instalment of this discussion.

'Penda's Fen' by David Rudkin: Part Two
The 1973 television play Penda’s Fen, written by David Rudkin is an extraordinary work that still unsettles, beguiles and astonishes fifty years after it was made, and stands as a classic of folk horror. Last week, we looked at how its teenage protagonist is forced to recognise and accept his true sexuality; tonight, in the second of three episodes, we look at how the visions and revelations he experiences call his religious and social certainties into question too.

18: Lesbian Horror: Part Three
In the third instalment of this podcast, Gemma and Simon look at the queer horror fiction of Vernon Lee, Marjorie Bowen and Louisa May Alcott, and the bleak fictional portrayals of female queerness and sexuality in a world which denied those women any possibility of a happy ending.

17: Lesbian Horror: Part Two
In the second part of their exploration of Lesbian Horror, Gemma and Simon conclude their study of Le Fanu’s Carmilla and look at its various film adaptations, especially Emily Harris’ 2019 version starring Jessica Raine and Hannah Rae. Also up for discussion are the stories of Vernon Lee, the real-life horrors of Erszebet Bathory and much else besides.

Ben Wheatley's 'In The Earth': Part Three
In the final part of this subscribers-only podcast, Gemma Files and Simon Bestwick conclude their deep dive into Ben Wheatley's film In The Earth. Filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic and set at the height of it, this eerie, beautiful and hallucinatory work of folk horror is a feast for horror fans, holding echoes of Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood and Nigel Kneale's The Stone Tape and tinged with dark humour, but very much its own haunting self.
Take our hands, and into the woods we go.

16: Lesbian Horror: Part One
Stories about, by or for queer women have been a part of the horror genre from the beginning, not least in one of the classic vampire stories, J. Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla, which Gemma and Simon take as their starting point in the first of four episodes exploring the topic of Lesbian Horror.
