35. Dancing Toward Change: Dan Watt’s Journey from Stage Performer to Emmy Winning Filmmaker

35. Dancing Toward Change: Dan Watt’s Journey from Stage Performer to Emmy Winning Filmmaker

In this interview, Emmy Award-winner Dan Watt joins Teisha for an exciting and heartfelt conversation about his journey from dancer to director, producer, and documentary filmmaker–and all the pivots and setbacks in between. We begin by exploring Dan’s love for performance, recalling childhood memories of putting on neighborhood shows, learning ballroom dance in his parents’ basement, and having his natural rhythm discovered by his dance teacher during a freshman talent show—early experiences that planted the seeds for his future in the arts. Next, we dive into the depths of his incredible career, including the early challenges he faced such as fierce competition and personal rejection like being told he was “too masculine” for a Janet Jackson video; his transition to director in which he choreographed 100+ sold-out performances like Annie and Foot Loose, and worked to increase access of lesser known productions by bringing them to the L.A. market where they became unexpected hits; and his break into TV and film in which he spent 10 years working with Columbia Pictures and Simon Cowell realizing the value of transferable skills and age-based wisdom–but not before he experienced a discriminating rejection by the Dr. Phill Show. Then, we zoom in on his greatest challenge—and most rewarding project—producing the Emmy Award-winning documentary, Everybody Dance, a film that follows children with disabilities who find joy and empowerment through dance; discuss how spending 10 months filming these families profoundly changed Dan forever, opening his eyes to the daily challenges these kids face and the incredible strength and resilience they show; and highlight how the experience deepened his understanding of disability inclusion and inspired him to continue creating projects that give a voice to underrepresented communities. Packed with humor, insight, and real-life lessons on overcoming adversity, this episode is a must-listen for anyone passionate about storytelling, the arts, and making a difference. 34. From the Projects to a Ph.D with Bryan Samuel: Defying Discrimination Through Fierce Determination

34. From the Projects to a Ph.D with Bryan Samuel: Defying Discrimination Through Fierce Determination

From his roots in the Longsdale housing projects of Knoxville, TN to obtaining his Ph.D and championing educational equity, Dr. Bryan Samuel's journey is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance.  Bryan and I dive into his childhood and the experiences he had growing up in poverty, his health challenges including prone-belly syndrome,  an incarcerated father, and the numerous resulting obstacles he faced–including the heartbreaking Christmas of 1978 when he received no presents and a greuling four-mile walk to school every day no matter the weather. Despite these hardships, Bryan was determined to pursue higher education, but would end up having to overcome a punishing ACT score of 12, academic probation during under-grad, and five rejections from Doctoral programs because discriminating admissions officers claimed he would never be able to write a dissertation–that is, until he squashed their skepticism by presenting a briefcase with dozens of A+ research papers. We then explore Bryan's 30-year career in higher education, marked by his dedication to helping students overcome similar barriers. He shares inspiring stories of his impact, like assisting NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in completing his degree by challenging rigid residency requirements, and helping a student obtain a degree in a program they weren't officially admitted to due to GPA restrictions, showcasing his commitment to looking beyond traditional metrics. Now a leader in diversity and inclusion, Bryan's mission is to increase educational access for all students, including those with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Throughout, we emphasize the importance of flexible policies and recognizing diverse perspectives in higher education. Bryan’s story is a powerful reminder that personal struggles can fuel a passion for creating equitable opportunities, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in the life-changing potential of education and the impact of unwavering determination. Zach Tidwell is many incredible things–from a former Marines machine gunner to an extreme sports athlete to now a published game developer–but not least incredible is his drive, resilience and ability to embrace being uncomfortable head on. In part one of this conversation, Zach and I explore what it was like growing up as a nomadic military brat, the impact of having a younger sister with Down syndrome had on him and his family, and the role wrestling and snowboarding played in developing his passion for extreme sports; explore his life as a Marine, including the exhilarating and high-risk job of being a machine gunner and the two deployments that took him all over Asia and the Pacific; and dive into the traumatic experiences that set him spiraling into deep-rooted depression that climaxed on one tragic night when he put a bullet in his head. 12. Becoming Sober Out Loud with Jessica Williams

12. Becoming Sober Out Loud with Jessica Williams

Despite being once in the thick valley of alcoholism, Jessica Williams has reached many incredible peeks throughout her life. But even so, she is still on the journey to becoming the person she was always meant to be. In this conversation, Jessica and I explore the detrimental impact of bullying, including her sad yearning for death as a child; the role popularity and ensuing “power” played in Jessica’s high school metamorphosis into a bully herself; and the lack of escapism and emotional safety children today have to deal with as a result of our “always on and with you” digital world. Next, we dive into the thick of Jessica’s alcoholism, including the extremely dangerous alcoholic-incentivized reward system she put in place in college in exchange for a 4.0 GPA; the role promotions and other outward successes played in fueling her discrete “functioning alcoholic” status for years; her journey to sobriety in Jan. 2020, including the multiple rock bottoms she had to hit along the way; and discuss the very sad struggle she and many others face regarding disclosing at the risk of backlash. Then, we talk about Jessica’s tough experiences as a female of color in the workplace; discuss her social impact work through Hidden Gem Career Coaching, a company on the mission to help women of color find upward mobility in their careers; and discuss the immense value of belonging, and tangible steps privileged leaders and organizations can take today to create a true sense of belonging in the workplace. 11. Terrell Jackson: Emerging from Darkness into The Color BLCK

From abusive foster families to violent racism to extreme depression, dark experiences tortured Terrell Jackson for most of his life, but he found a way to turn these trying times into the fuel that powers his dream of promoting, supporting and connecting Black creatives. In this conversation, we explore what life is like as an orphan, including the impact of physical abuse and nepotism; Terrell’s journey traveling from family to family; and struggles with  not feeling “normal” and life-long anxiety. Next, we dive into Terrell’s Air Force career; talk about the immense, racially-charged culture shock he faced moving from California to Florida in the early 90’s; and some near-death attacks and internal squad corruption he faced for being a Black man. Then, we zoom in on the extremely severe depression Terrell fell into during the pandemic, causing him to lose over 60 pounds and his grasp on reality; discuss his journey to crawling out of the darkness; and talk about his initiative with The Color BLCK, and how his mission to increase the representation and promotion of Black talents was ultimately born out of his own dark story. Resources The Color BLCK: Black creatives continue to pave the way in all forms of entertainment and this magazine offers a unique opportunity to display these talents to the black community and beyond. However, black creatives are still underrepresented in many mainstream media outlets. This is why platforms like The Color BLCK were created – to give black content creators a platform to showcase their work. Then, we dive into Brae’s own neuro divergence and struggle with mental health, including anxiety and ADHD; shed light on the plethora of misconceptions that exist around these conditions; and talk about the incredible power of a “keep going” mindset and the importance of self-empathy. 9. Healing from Suicide Loss One Layer at a Time with Braelyn Rasco (Part 1)

Braelyn (Brae) Rasco’s animated personality and connection with dance is  proof you can absolutely be the evidence of your loved ones without being the evidence of traumatic circumstance–but Brae will be the first to admit it’s been “one hell of a journey” sorting through all the layers to get here herself. In part 1 of this conversation, we explore Brae’s life-long passion for creativity, including writing, drawing, and the special emotional tether she has to her mom through dance; reflect on each of our “young” memories of the 9/11 tragedy; and discuss Brae’s career in marketing and the incredible—and sometimes detrimental—impact social media has on our lives. Then, we dive into what it was like growing up with a parent suffering from chronic vertigo and some of the regret Brae still holds for not fully understanding the illness back then as well as “shrugging off” unique burdens placed on her; discuss the unfortunate role society and the government played in the early 2000s—and sometimes still plays today—in not supporting people with depression as well as vertigo; and set the stage for Brae’s mother’s tragic suicide. And throughout, we talk about the importance of dreams and how it is NEVER too late to pursue any of your passions, as well as the tremendous power of, and need for, “the conversation” when it comes to mental health. 8. Noor: Freedom Beyond Tensions and Trauma: Realizing My True Self—Personally, Sexually and Spiritually

Cultural, religious and familial tensions as well as childhood trauma stunted Noor’s identity for awhile, but through twists and turns, she eventually evolved from inward thinking and meek to out and loud! In this conversation, Noor and I explore what it was like growing up in India in a multi-generational household; discuss the impact Sikhism and the anti-Sikh riots of the 1980’s had on her and her family; and share mutual stories and perspectives about our very tough experiences with sexual abuse as children. Then, we explore the culture shock Noor experienced coming to the U.S. for the first time for her under-grad, as well as the unique experiences she had while attending Oxford University for her M.B.A.; talk about her passion for positively impacting Delhi’s urban slums and the $0.5 million incubation she co-founded to  help improve transportation infrastructure; and dive into her journey to realizing her Gay identity in her 30s and how her long battle with body disassociation prolonged this discovery. And throughout, we explore what it’s like living as an empath and the significant toll that can have on some; the value of shaping your own identity to fit your true self; and how we could all benefit from finding more happiness in the simple things—just like our fur babies. 7. Overcoming Cultural Shame, Chronic Pain and the Curse of the Rose-Colored Glasses with Madeline Ruiz

7. Overcoming Cultural Shame, Chronic Pain and the Curse of the Rose-Colored Glasses with Madeline Ruiz

Despite the tremendous hurdles of shame and pain Madeline Ruiz has faced, her passion for empathy has never faded. In this conversation, we explore the magnitude of shame Madeline endured as a Bolivian/Honduran female throughout her childhood and young adulthood—both inside and outside her culture walls—stemming from her “wifery” grooming; a Mormon upbringing; in-school racism and bullying; and pressures and expectations placed on her as a first-generation Hispanic. Then, we dive into her super painful, 12-year battle with two hormonal conditions, including endometriosis and PCOS; her tough experiences being undiagnosed and mis-treated for over a decade; the unsettling lack of care that’s given to female health conditions today, especially by male doctors; and her eventual, life-changing road to “recovery.” And throughout, Madeline exemplifies how crucial it is to think for yourself and challenge “commonly just accepted” philosophies; the immense power therapy, especially culturally-competent therapy, can have on ridding shame; and her long-time love of creativity and commitment to empathy, and how she’s been able to marry these two together in her work as a designer. ** The name of this week's guest has been altered to protect privacy and preserve anonymity. 6. Chelsea Gilchrist: From Finding My Own Voice—to Becoming a Voice for the Voiceless

Gaining confidence and finding her own voice is something Chelsea Gilchrist, MGS struggled with for awhile, but once she conquered it, she not only had the courage to speak up for herself, she also became the loud vocals for many older adults who had become voiceless themselves. In this conversation, we talk about what it was like for 14-year-old Chelsea trying to cope with her grandmother’s dementia; some of the regrets she still has today about not fully understanding the disease back then; and many myths and misconceptions that exist about dementia as well as Alzheimer’s today. We also dive into her extraordinary career in the gerontology/aging space. We explore her work in social isolation and falls prevention; touch upon several issues plaguing the aging community today (e.g., poorly managed long-term care facilities, a lack of resources for younger caregivers and the unfortunate reality of many older adults getting separated from their beloved pets despite myriad data illustrating their immense value); and the incredible contributions Chelsea’s made as the volunteer President of the junior board of the D.C. area chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Then, we zoom in closely on some of the ironic ageism Chelsea herself has had to face while working in an industry “dedicated” to fighting ageism, and discuss what it means to be a true leader—especially as it relates to women. 5. Being Bipolar with Stephan Ringer: Embracing My Misfit (Part 2)

We’re back with the second half of Stephan Ringer’s incredible story. In part 2 of this conversation, we travel back to the U.S. with Stephan and his wife and explore what it was like trying to get back on their feet (and almost hitting bankruptcy); the “hard sell” of having kids in today’s world and their experience starting a family; and what it was like learning their son had a developmental delay and trying to navigate a new style of parenting. Then, we dive head-first into the three days surrounding Stephan’s manic period and bipolar diagnosis; talk about his experience while in the mental hospital and what it was like trying to re-integrate into “normal” life; and discuss what it was like realizing his wife was also bipolar and a very difficult, yet necessary, decision Stephan had to make in order to “save” his wife. Threaded throughout this conversation, Stephan talks about the shame and misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder and neuro divergence, and opens up about personal struggles as well as shares advice and helpful metaphors to try to reassure those who might be “in his shoes.” And at the end, we talk about what it was like for Stephan recently choosing his own mental well-being over work, and the decision to leave his job. 4. Being Bipolar with Stephan Ringer: Embracing My Misfit (Part 1)

4. Being Bipolar with Stephan Ringer: Embracing My Misfit (Part 1)

The label “bipolar” is one that Stephan Ringer leans into wholeheartedly, and is what ultimately enabled him to be himself always—regardless of relationship or environment. In part 1 of this conversation, we set the stage for Stephan’s incredible journey to being diagnosed bipolar in his late 30s (and spoiler alert!), what it was like discovering that his wife was also bipolar in the same year. We dive into Stephan’s childhood, including what it was like being raised by a Korean mother while also having three older sisters; the intense seven-year experience of him and his family delivering the Washington Post to help make ends meet; and his young performing arts career. We also share perspectives on the value of higher education today; talk about how Stephan ultimately decided not to finish his degree, but instead launch his career at AOL during the hype of AIM, where he ended up meeting his now wife; and dive into the early years of his marriage, including some struggles and baggage that manifested itself during their three-year stint living in London, which became the catalyst that dropped them into the “insanity pit.” Throughout this conversation, we attempt to break down stigmas and “judgment” barriers by talking about what it means to be a “misfit,” and how we are all misfits in one way or another. 3. The Black Perspective with Kisha Brown: Showing up Consciously and Impacting Greatly

From a Black lawyer to a female leader to a loving mother, Kisha A. Brown, Esq. is dedicated to always showing up in the world, and doing it consciously. In this conversation, Kisha and I journey through her extraordinary legal career—from her time as a practicing attorney, to becoming the first woman to hold the role of Director of Civil Rights for the Baltimore City Office of Civil Rights, and then to today as a legal tech entrepreneur—and deep-dive into a plethora of civil rights and economic issues impacting the Black community, including police brutality, poverty, voter intimidation and more. We also talk about her journey to becoming the founder of Justis Connection, a Black lawyer referral and legal resources platform, and her mission and vision around impacting the world from the “Black perspective”–including what her and her team are doing to develop solutions that’ll make technology more equitable and inclusive for people of color. And through this conversation, Kisha opens up about multiple adversities she’s encountered throughout her life, including challenges trying to navigate the culture shock and a “double life” as a child when she moved from a very diverse NY to a very segregated Georgia; racism and workplace discrimination; and internal struggles with female disempowerment in leadership. 2. Yza Shady: Journeying Through Surreal Moments in Time as a Dark-Skinned Artist

Across four careers and just as many continents, Yza Shady’s journey through life can be described as many things, but plain isn’t one of them! In this conversation, we talk about Yza’s extraordinary career pivots, starting with her dancing days in 1980s’ NYC go-go bars and Parisian cabaret clubs, as well as cruise ships; to her time as an off-Broadway actor; then her transition to teacher at an elite boarding school for protege golf and tennis students; and finally her  move to the corporate world as a proposal writer. We also dive into what it was like growing up in a multi-cultural, Hispanic/Black family; her experience traveling solo at 15 to live abroad in South America for a year; and some of the prejudices she’s faced being a “dark-haired, dark-skinned” artist, beginning as an eight-year-old ballerina. And through all these experiences, Yza shares several surreal, sometimes life-altering, moments in time that have shaped her, as well as some adversities, including a couple near-death encounters; an unexpected divorce; and workplace inequity. We end by talking about Yza’s dream to eventually become an author and share her autobiographical essays with the world. And at the very end, Yza graces us by reading one of her essays, and it’s packed with so much emotion!
