Something For The Weekend - The Oban Times

A quartet of hardy seafarers paid a visit to region recently to test the choppy West Coast waters ahead of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge. In December the Atlantic Nomads will be leaving the safety of La Gomera in the Canary Islands in their 28ft ocean rowing boat 'Doris' and rowing unsupported 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Antigua in the Caribbean. Known as 'The Worlds Toughest Row', the challenge will strip the team of all the comforts of modern life and test every part of their mental and physical resilience. Fiona caught up with the team at Dunstaffnage Marina following their recent training camp and here's what crew member Euan Fraser had to say about the epic adventure.

Fiona caught up with Barcaldine-based psychologist Marion Elkin-Greener to find out how the pandemic had affected our mental health and what can be done to help. Marion is best known for her Oban FM slot Mental Health Musings by Mer which began in December 2019. Following a break during lockdown Marion is back on our airwaves with a new day and some new ideas. As well as the radio show the mother of three talks about plans for podcasts, reaching out through social media, setting up her own business and getting rid of the stigma surrounding mental health issues in both adults and children once and for all.

The Something For The Weekend Team will soon be back recording their regular podcasts – its always busy here at the Oban times at this time of year and is difficult to get the team together for a recording session. As we approach the end of our Summer Specials we thought we would bring you something that was done earlier this year but we never managed to broadcast in full. Fiona caught up with Lorn Healthy Options fitness advisor Rob Graham to find out a wee bit more about the Oban-based community run charity and what they had been doing to help people with long and short term health issues during lockdown and beyond. During the interview Rob talks about the charity itself, his inspirational Messages from Mull, the importance of looking after both our physical and mental health, and how the community can put something back into the service. Lets have a listen.

- The something for the Weekend Team get even busier than usual during the summer – It not that there is nothing to podcast about  far from it – but it’s  its difficult to get the whole gang together even from their remote locations to record the weekly show.  However we don’t stand idle and have managed to record a few podcasts in advance.  This week –  A new project is being launched by Oban Men's Shed to restore a little piece of maritime history. Kathie has been  chatting to the project's John McAllister and Colin Turtle to find out how they plan, with the help of willing hands and council funding, to restore clinker boat the Mary Jane and get her back on the water. Built about 90 years ago on Easdale, and registered as a small craft in World War Two, this special lady is badly in need of some tender loving care - to become seaworthy once again.

The something for the Weekend Team have decided to take a wee break over the summer  to enjoy the rain/midges/sun/downpours please delete as appropriate – It not that there is nothing to podcast about  far from it – but it’s a busy time with people off on holiday and its difficult to get the whole gang together even from their remote locations to record the weekly show.    That’s not to say they havn’t been busy and recorded a few things in advance –    This week's podcast takes you on a Calmac ferry then a Basking Shark Scotland rib boat as Kathie and fellow open water swimmers Jeanette Sheldrick and Catriona Petit chat with Lorna Evans, one of the founders of a new charity called Seaful whose mission is to encourage more people to get out on the ocean, fall in love with it and keep it safe. Also on the journey was Seaful's other founder Cal Major, a world-record stand-up paddleboarder currently working her way around the wild Scottish coast while her partner James Appleton captures it all on camera for a documentary.

A Summer Special  Here at the Something for the weekend studios we do like to have lots of different inserts bringing you audio of things that normally you would only get to read about.    The something for the Weekend Team have decided to take a wee break over the summer – it’s a busy time with people off on holiday and its difficult to get the whole gang together  but Kathie has been down to the Bridge over the Atlantic to catch up with Seil crofter DJ MacDougall who is picking up his pipes to raise £1,000 for charity.  On August 28 he will be marching five miles, while playing the pipes, all the way from the Oban side of the Bridge Over The Atlantic down to the seafront at Ellenabeich.  Funds raised are for Royal British Legion Scotland's Easdale Branch. Kathie caught up with him.

This week the team totally blindside Ellis by sending him a fake running order which includes a nightmare of an intro full of made up Scottish words for him to fall over.   Yes it's the Butcher boy's final podcast before he escapes to take up a new role in the Lake District and Steevie, Fiona and Kathie have been working away in the background to make it a memorable one. Ellis is running late for this week's podcast while Oban 'Gym Guy' Innes Hughes is just running. South Yorkshire's Jim Morton is taking things at a slightly easier pace and takes a break from his round-the-coast odyssey to tell us all about it and songstress Dot Allison provides this week's music, taking inspiration from the wildlife around her Hebridean Cottage. Fiona, Kathie and Steevie are all present and correct and Lesley Duncan has another mind boggling Scottish Word of the Week.

With Kathie away to Yorkshire, it's up to Steevie, Fiona and Ellis to hold the fort at The Oban Times' Something For The Weekend podcast. Up first is David Glennie of the Scottish Slate Islands Heritage Trust about the reopening of the Tardis-like museum at Ellenabeich and why it needs both visitors and volunteers. Plus in this week's music segment, there's some relaxing tinkling of the ivories by talented local pianist Marek Kochmanski who usually does his stuff at the Bridge Cafe on every last Saturday in the month. There's also an exclusive interview with the lost walkers on Jura who recount their epic rescue which saw them set off on a Thursday but not make it back until Saturday night! Intrepid reporter Kathie regales us with another of her watery adventures as she steels her to take part in an eight-mile local leg of a row around Scotland. Our obscure wordsmith Ellis digs up another baffling Scottish word of the week that he can't pronounce and the team has never heard of, but have you? And that's not all. We find out who's been responsible for all the yellow knitted wellies that have been appearing, and have an upbeat new single from Glasgow-based folk singer-songwriter, Scott McWatt, called 'Where We'll Be'.

In this week's episode of Something For The Weekend Ellis goes to a street festival, Kathie visits a new garden taking root at Oban's Rockfield Centre to eventually provide natural dyes for creative workshops  there and Steevie stormtroops in about a certain Empire that has come to town to film a Star Wars spin-off Disney channel series - or has it?  Fiona also treats us to music from indie-roots artist Hector Shaw who gently brings us back down to planet earth with a track from his new  album ..... This week Kathie catches up in Oban with endurance cyclist Harry Lidgley who is on a 7,000km mission to wheel his way round all the UK mainland lifeboat stations raising funds for the RNLI. Celebrity Robson Green's been in town making a new TV show and a new friend after meeting Ellis and we have some wonderful music from Patsy Reid who will be leading the team of expert tutors at Mull Fiddle Week this summer. And for those wordies out there, we have a weather-related Scottish word of the week. It's not that dreich!

It's a jam-packed edition of Something For The Weekend this Friday as Kathie returns full of hugs and holiday cheer. She brings us an interview with Laura Mandleberg who tells of Mull's first ever fiddle week due in August. Continuing the music theme Fiona has music from Glaswegian Indie-roots artist Hector Shaw and engineered by a whole host of local musicians. Meanwhile Ellis needs a sit down after speaking to Oban's James Armour who is planning to swim, run and cycle and the Outer Hebrides to raise £10,000 for a charity. Our man with the dictionary also manages to baffle the Oban Times team with another obscure Scottish Word of the Week - which definitely does not describe our very own Stephen Day! 

Elections are a hot topic In this week's edition and Fiona bumps into Joy Cameron at the Benderloch Palladium Polling Station where the pair reminisce over the many uses of the once bustling Victory Hall and look forward to an entertaining and safe reopening. There’s also music from the multi genre musical duo The Romanas featuring Oban friends Rhianna McMahon and Rory O’B. Ellis has Fiona and Steevie flummoxed over Scottish Word of the week and there's some talk of a Brave new world at Oban Phoenix Cinema.

There's much drama in the SFTW studio this week with dark and mysterious happenings in Fort William among the talking points, but what famous Doctor does Steevie really want to play? Ellis is a bit too interested in the Jilted Lovers Helpline despite all his talk about winching while Fiona takes us back to the 70's with a smurfing good tune.

The sun has got his hat on hip hip hooray and we are getting ready for a bright and brilliant  weekend with banter from the Oban Times crew Kathie, Fiona, Ellis and a little extra input from our IT marvel Stephen Day - accompanied by special guests - the builders!    In this week's podcast Kathie catches up with Angie Bird who, along with a group of other mums and supporters, has been taking a daily dip in the sea this month to raise funds for Oban Toy Cupboard. Kathie's off sunning herself in the Cote d-Seil this week leaving Steevie, Fiona and Ellis to hold the Fort. Spring is in the air and The Oban Times crew are definitely feeling it in this week's podcast. While Kathie, Ellis and Fiona celebrate nature all the extra chirping and frenzied bird feeding going on in our gardens - Steevie is not so chirpy and is after those pesky squirrels who have been stealing and stashing away his conker collection from which he had hope to sprout some trees.

Keeping to the nautical theme, Kathie has a chat with Jack MacGregor who has come to the rescue of stranded North Kerrera residents by putting on a ferry service funded by emergency resilience cash to connect them to the mainland during lockdown and we've also been catching up with mum of two Nikki Wasik who set up Oban Buggy Club, all Covid restriction approved, to throw out a lifeline to new parents and other caregivers for tots longing for a bit of normality at such a testing time.

Happy Valentines! While Kathie, Ellis and Steevie keep an eye out for the postie ever hopeful of sacks of cards being brought to the door - the trio caught up with each other virtually speaking to talk about romance and needle phobia! There's also a wee bit of serenading going on from the wonderful Oban Gaelic Choir and friends - Enjoy!

After a frantic start, where Kathie looks for somewhere to sledge and Fiona prepares for a weekend of rugby action, the Something for the Weekend team relax with some Golden Years zumba and some wise words from Seil poet Kenneth Stevens. Ellis and Steevie add their calming influences before the gang drift away to more magical music from the Celtic Connections 2021 Big Band and guests.

It's all happening on the podcast this week as the OT team give January a good kick up the backside and look towards spring for some eternal hope. Kathie is joined by adventure sport enthusiast Andy Corbe who is off on a watery magic carpet ride while Fiona chats to Breege Smyth about the future of festivals. Ellis is crying over spilt cocoa and Steevie holds everyone together (literally) from base camp. Music this week comes from the 2021 Celtic Connections Big Band.

There's nothing sleekit, cowrin or tim'rous about the Oban Times team this week as Steevie, Fiona, Kathie and Ellis launch into their Rabbie Burns special to celebrate the birthday of the national bard on Monday. The quirky quartet discuss the merits of the haggis before putting their own stamp on some of Burns' best kent works. Joining in the celebration are Lerags couple Rab and Michelle Woods, who have muckle ado this weekend at their own Burns night ceilidh, and Oban High School pupil Megan Day who closes this week's edition with a beautiful rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Happy New Year everyone! Goodbye 2020 and hello 2021 with wide open arms. We've high hopes for the next 12 months with expectations and resolutions from Fiona, Kathie, Ellis and Steevie from going more bananas (if that's possible!) to embracing creativity and getting a move on when it cones to keeping active and getting fit'ter'

We've got a chat with retiring boat skipper Duncan Phillips from Croab Haven who has notched up enough nautical miles in his 31 year career to go round the world eight times - and a musical gift from a talented chap from Barcaldine.

With just seven more sleeps to go until Christmas morning, the Something For The Weekend Team are getting festive with a little help from Seil Sound community choir and  Ellis getting retro with his lookback at Top of the Pops Christmas Specials - remember Father Abraham and the Smurfs? Or what about a Womblin' Christmas? Bringing us up to Christmas present....Kathie catches up with Morvyn Finlayson from the Salvation Army to chat about the phenomenal response they have had  to the 2020 Christmas Appeal, receiving hundreds of donated gifts for this area's most vulnerable and needy of all ages. We also hear from Connel 20-year-old and rap artist Stewxrt with his music straight from the heart.

More journalistic jolly japes from Fiona and Kathie interspersed with some moments of sanity from IT whiz Stephen Day, who won't be talking sci-fi this week, and by our somewhat more sensible guests.

This week we have Dee Bradbury and her husband Nick to tell us a heart stopping story with a thankfully happy ending as well as a wee bit music from Dunbeg singer songwriter Mike Nisbet. Fiona and Kathie talk Christmas decorations, or the lack of them, while Steevie sits back with his baffies on admiring the Lochavullin tree.

More madcap banter from the OT team this week including Kathie having quandaries over whether or not to curb her wanderlust this weekend as she ponders a day trip to Gigha, Ellis needs to decide quick whether or not to dash back to the charity shop to buy that chunk of carved wood that no words 'not even for Ellis' can describe and Martin is Ballachulish-bound - but not in an inflatable kayak.

Kathie gets the wobbles in this week's Podcast after a too close for comfort encounter with a creature of the deep, Fiona's all packed up for her family reunion jollidays and Ellis is rejoicing in social liberation - of sorts while Martin is looking forward to more splendid solitude in his kayak.
