Episode 119 - Are championships worth the effort

With the NFAS 3D championships just round the corner I askthe question are the championships worth the cost and effort? I give my views on the costs and benefits to the society and individuals who attend.

There is a huge financial and time outlay when organisingsuch an event, especially when you think that it might have between 500-700 competitors, needing parking, camping, marshalling etc. This from a society that have over 6,000 members.

The truth is though far more complex than just financial, asthere are so many less tangible benefits such events provide. These include the opportunity to see otherwise restricted or private woodland, social aspects of catching up with friends, opportunities of making new ones, the mental health of being in the community. The list goes one.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the people involved with finding the venue, course laying, administration and everything else. Without your hard workthe society would not be what it is today.

So, in my view are events like the champs worth it? Yes, theyare. Thanks.

Episode 117 – Shoot Report – Duvelle Bowmen

In this episode I provide a shoot report on the Duvelle Archers NFAS open held at the end of April.
It proved to be a really good 3D shoot, in beautiful weather and woodland. If you are looking for NFAS open shoots to attend I would recommend this one, especially for new archers as the targets are set at sensible distances while still being challenging.

Micro podcast - The pain of social media

I hadn't planned to record anything this week as away visiting my Mam in Wales, but there has been a lot going on in the past week and a couple of things that have made me think.

I wanted to share my thoughts and dare I say feelings on the topic of posts on social media. It appears I have offended some , who believe I'm having a go at the volunteers , even in-sighting anger towards them.

If you know me that is the very last thing I would ever do.

It has left me pondering on whether to continue posting or to join the silent majority.

Episode 112 - Quick update on coaching, ski holiday and appearing as podcast guest

Another quick podcast today, giving you an update on what’s been going on over the past few weeks.
I’ve been spending some time enjoying a family, taking our son on his first ever skiing holiday. Then helping to sort the clubs field course, doing some coaching, taking people round the woods for their NFAS assessment, whilst trying to get rid of a persistent cough. So yes, been pretty busy.

Episode 109 - Shoot report - NFAS indoor champs 2025

This is the first shoot report of 2025 and it is for the first ever NFAS Indoor archery championships. Yes, you read that correctly NFAS goes indoors, with a 2 day competition.

In this episode I cover the 2 days of shooting 3D and paper faces, telling you how it went, targets shot, and lots more/ Offering my thoughts on the good bit and where it could be improved for next time. If there is a next time.

Micro podcast episode on lessons learned

I've put together this micro episode from a few clips I shared on YouTube and Instagram in an effort to show everyone how easy it is to make mistakes when your heads not in the game and you are trying to do some work on form and shooting down on the archery range.

As the title says there has been quite a lot of things going on over the past couple of weeks, some positive and others less positive. The important thing is everyone is okay.

Thanks for all the feedback I’ve received from the last podcasts and based on this I’m going to dive into some coaching tips and advice. This time focusing on your shot sequence and why it’s a good idea to work out what you are doing right and where there are elements that can be improved.

Episode 101 – Yes, I’m back

I’ve come to the decision to restart the podcast series.

I have been very humbled by the support that has been offered to me online, face to face or via phone calls. Thank you all. I’ve also had some very positive feedback on the impact my material has had on individuals. I’ve also realised I enjoy trying to help people and stopping recording and writing has a huge negative impact on how I feel.

My goal remains the same, that is to provide perspective of field archery here in the UK. I am hoping to include some product reviews include Core takedown recurves, shooting gloves, Wildcrete 3D targets and a few other ideas.

I’m also updating some coaching material on the Archers Triangle.

I've been fortunate enough to have an article published in the latest issue of Bow International issue 181It's a 3 page overview on using feather fletchings rather than plastic.

Episode 98 - Shoot report - Duvelle Bowmen - May 2024

This episode is another shoot report thus time it's for Duvelle Bowman, for NFAS competition which they hosted a couple of weeks ago.

Overall it was a really good day, with some fantastic weather and good company. The course was 40 targets and all but 2 were 3Ds.

Episode 97 – Shoot report Long Eaton Bluebell shoot

This episode is a shoot report for Long Eaton Field Archers NFAS competition which they hosted last week.

Overall it was a good day, with some fantastic weather and good company. The course was 36 targets and all 3Ds, with some very cleverly set shots.

Episode 96 – Shooting gloves and tabs – the basics

In this episode I am trying something a little different and recording it as a video. Don’t worry I’m behind the camera.

I’m talking about the different finger tabs and shooting gloves you can come across in traditional archery.

I’ve had a couple of questions recently about the differences between tabs and gloves when running some coaching sessions so thought this would be a good way of showing the differences.

I know that some people prefer a glove, while others prefer a shooting tab. At the end of the day it’s what works for you and you are allowed. I’ve used both and tend to lean towards using a custom tab over a glove.

I also offer a quick tip on improving the fit of your shooting glove by adding some velcro to the wrist strap.

Episode 94 – Listen to the feedback, don’t block it out

Over Easter I was in Wales staying with my family and I managed to record this episode whilst sat outside in the garden, trying out the new Lavaller microphones I mentioned on Instagram a few days ago. Let me know what you think of the sound quality as I’ve been quite impressed. I do wonder off topic a bit and talk about the wildlife that’s surrounding me.

The topic of the session is feedback and what I can feedblocks, The points in your shot sequence where you have the opportunity to stop before you make a mistake or error in judgement.

Whether you are an instinctive archer or a process based shooter you need to have points in your draw and shooting sequence where you can take a moment and decide whether you should or should not be moving forward to the next step.

Just because you draw up does not mean you have to shoot.

In this episode I ask you to consider using your vote, by going over briefly the proposals in the National Field Archery society round of voting.

For those that don’t know each year members of the society can put forward rule amendments for the larger membership to vote on. This year there are several such proposals and I try to summaries some of these and offer some thoughts and my views on them.

I’m not telling you to vote for or against any of them. What I am trying to do is encourage you to use your vote.

Episode 84 – Have your voice heard

In just over a week there is the AGM for the National Field Archery Society here in the UK. It’s the opportunity for people to contribute to the society and even if you can’t physically get to the meeting you can join via zoom link if you contact the general secretary in advance (general.secretary@nfas.net).

Likewise after the AGM in the following months there will be the voting on the proposals discussed at the AGM. Don’t waste your chance to vote.

Episode 83 – Be the guy or girl, not a Panda

This episode idea was partly inspired by Angel at High Power Archery and as I said he’s just put out a really good short video titled” Put it in neutral!” which I would encourage people to view (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgmT4j6O1E4)

I try to adapt the don’t be that guy that he is made famous to a “Be that guy”

Be the guy who offers to help or tries to help, offers a friendly ear or non-judgemental viewpoint.

Be the person at the club who spots a target face needs replacing and rather than just tell someone else or complains about it, but the person who grabs a load of faces and goes out and replaces them.

I use the phrase don’t be a Panda i.e. someone who Eats, shoots and leaves.

Episode 73 – NFAS 50th anniversary 3D championships

A few weeks ago there was the National Field Archery Society 3D championships, it also marked the 50th anniversary of the society formation.

In this episode I’m going to give my view of how it went. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these styles of events, it’s 2 days of shooting, with over 600 archers and 4 courses of 40 3D targets of all shapes, sizes and distances.

It was in my view a great success and huge thanks to all involved.

The new 3Ds I mention are I believe Wild Crete.
