How data science helps to keep the lights on

How data science helps to keep the lights on

In this episode, I'm interviewing Sam Young, Lead Data Scientist at one of the UK's major energy suppliers, Ovo. Sam uses complex maths from the smart meter and weather data to predict power demand and, ultimately, keep power networks stable and customer bills - cheaper.

However, the history of power supply reaches far beyond the invention of computing - how come we use data science in the energy industry? What does it tell us about the future promises of digital innovations in that space? Finally, how do we innovate for the public purpose - to mitigate climate change and avoid pushing people into fuel poverty?

Coding for democracy and security?

Coding for democracy and security?

While we often hear about the 'big tech' advances and mishaps, we often forget that there's more to digital technologies than Amazon and Facebook. In today’s episode, I invited two developers, Will and Simon, to talk about their work in "small tech" :), namely, sustainable fin-tech start-up Tumelo and a cooperative local media outlet, the Bristol Cable.  We will discuss their security practices and ponder about the role of computing in democracy.
