Planarians are rather wonderful and challenging beasts whose rather special biological and psychological talents and properties can make them fascinating subjects for scientific investigation. The worms will provide the fascination—it is up to you to provide the science.

It may, of course, be argued that these ideas, too, are speculative, but on the whole, speculations based on known phenomena are to be preferred to those which have their origin in pure fantasy.

The Baldscientist Podcast - Episode 018 - Dr. C. Andrew Frank - The Best Scientists

The Baldscientist Podcast - Episode 018 - Dr. C. Andrew Frank - The Best Scientists

***Note: I say the word "bas*ard" (very quietly) in this episode.***

Episode notes

Dr. C. Andrew Frank (Andy) is a Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, who studies neuronal plasticity using the arguably best understood animal model in genetics, the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster).

In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Andy is a kind and sensitive person. The conversation that you will hear in this episode centers on a twitter thread that he posted a few months ago, a poem titled: “The Best Scientists”. I am not ashamed to admit that when I read it, I got misty-eyed, and right then and there I decided to share it with the world.

His poem undoubtedly has something to say to scientists of any persuasion:

Academia or not.

Tenure-track or not.

Girls, boys, or none of the above.

Students, young and… not so young.

With doctoral degrees, or not.

Any ethnicity.

Citizen scientists.

And many others.

I’d like to think that this poem will inspire much-needed conversations about inclusivity, collegiality, and respect.

And, well, we also nerd out about science!

Andy kindly gave me permission to reproduce the poem; I posted it at baldscientist.com. I hope you like it as much as I did.

Enjoy the episode!

“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”

Episode notes

I thank you for your patience. It was quite difficult for me to record this episode. I know that I am not alone when I state that I have anxieties over this issue, and I thank heaven that my family and I are safe. I cannot even begin to imagine how is it like to lose a loved one in this way. Still, it was difficult for me to do this.

  • I must thank you in advance for you kindness and patience with me. This is the very first time that I have ever interviewed someone, and I was nervous as heck, but I eventually calmed down and began to actually have fun with it. So again, thank you!
  • Peter and I had a fun conversation where we talked about science, astronomy, biology, global warming, astrobiology and the origin of life, the writing process, advice to aspiring writers, and many other topics.
  • And I hope I heard right, but I'd swear I heard a duck (Yes, a duck!), at some point in the recording. I hope it was on Peter's side, because there was certainly no duck anywhere near my house.
  • There were a few technical glitches in this interview, as I had to record it with my phone (more on this in part 2 of this interview). That said, the important part (Peter’s voice) came out beautifully clear. Enjoy!**
