Ep 13: SPECIAL - The Island of Misfit Toys: Diseases Edition
Welcome back to another episode of Organs, Tissues & Other Issues! Today’s episode is a special episode because today is... RARE DISEASE DAY! Have you ever found a case study — one that said “the first of its kind to be described” — and though ‘someone else has it too!?’ only to realize the case study was about you? This has been a part of the rare disease — or rare manifestations of a disease — experience for co-host Karyssa. 1 in 10 people is thought to be impacted by one of the ~7,000 rare diseases. In the US, a rare disease is defined as a disease that affects less than 200,000 people in the country. However, there is a difference between a disease that is truly rare, and one that is rarely diagnosed — the self-fulfilling prophecy of a disease receiving the label of “rare”. Join co-hosts Karyssa and Siv to learn more about rare diseases, the experiences of a rare patient and those around them, and ways that you can start to help to make a difference for these patients. The co-hosts use humor to laugh, to share their insight, and discuss the challenges of rare diseases. We hope you enjoy this special episode!
