In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes The Doghaus Co-Founder Kevin Simpson. The Doghaus is a sports bar and a dog park. They welcome dogs of all breeds as long as they are being taken great care for by their owners. Located in St. Louis, Missouri, The Doghaus is a dog-friendly park where owners can chill and where pets can play.

What inspired the founders in opening their park is the demand for pubs and bars in their local community. Kevin and his co-founders thought about opening a unique business that is also inclusive to animals. Once they made their announcement on social media, they received a lot of positive feedback from the locals themselves.

Aside from operating as a business, The Doghaus supports and raises funds for local animal rescues and shelters. They make sure that animals in their community have a home and family to live with and to spend the rest of their lives. They also organize animal-centered events such as birthday parties for dogs.

Since they started in 2009, the rescue has grown over the years with their services for dogs and pet-owners. They facilitate foster and adoption programs in the western Hayes County, Texas. By providing medical and emotional care for dogs, the rescue also collaborates with local organizations to fulfill their mission.

This year, the rescue is planning to expand their nursery which they started last year. This facility addresses the need for puppies to have a safe and comfortable environment as they develop into adult dogs. The rescue is also setting their sights on building a healing house for recovering dogs.

As a non-profit rescue, Animal Rescue Mission aims to save abused dogs and cats in Los Angeles. The organization provides them with  adoption opportunities and safer places to call home. With a shelter based in Mexico, Animal Rescue Mission also takes in animals in need of rescuing from different places in the world.

Despite some challenging and overwhelming circumstances where they had to take in a great number of dogs, Animal Rescue Mission continues to pursue their advocacy in finding the right foster families for their animals. By doing a background check with foster homes, they make sure that the people who will provide homes for their animals are the right fit.

Addressing modern-day animal issues like the scarcity of spay-and-neuter clinics and the overpopulation of strays, Animal Rescue Mission supplies resources to communities that need solutions the most. Shira also cites that the inhumane dog breeding activity perpetuated by unlicensed organizations also poses a major problem that results in overpopulation. This is rampant in Los Angeles where awareness about animals needs to be raised and disseminated among communities.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Doobert Founder and CEO Chris Roy. Described as an “Airbnb for volunteers and homeless animals”, Doobert is a software and app that connects animal rescue organizations with volunteers and resources that will help locate animals in need of saving, transport them to shelters, connect them with potential adopters, and provide them with homes.

As a former pilot, Chris got involved with rescue organizations after a friend asked him to help transport dogs via an airplane to their shelter. Realizing that there was a lack of resources for rescue organizations to connect and access these animals, Chris took the chance to come up with the software as a database to address this issue. Chris and his team launched Doobert in May 2014.

Today, Doobert is still growing as a software and is proud to support more than 5,000 organizations and 35,000 volunteers with the mission to provide animals the homes and families they need.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Tails Humane Society Executive Director Michelle Groeper. Located in Illinois, Tails Humane Society has been taking care of 3,400 animals a year. Most of the animals they take in are dogs, cats, mice, and all friendly and vulnerable species with fur. They aim to provide homes for these animals and medical care such as spay-neuter services.

Michelle defends kill shelters in communities that lack resources and assistance for adoption programs. While other shelters have the right connections and access to directly provide immediate homes for their rescues, some shelters lack these opportunities due to their location and environment. That doesn’t mean that they are not working on ways to uphold the animals’ lives and their chance to live.

Taking animals within their area and from those of southern communities as well as their partner organizations, Tails Humane Society maintains the mission to help animals in need and offer the immediate care they deserve. For them, keeping up with effective communication and establishing genuine connections are fundamentals to running a successful animal organization.

The idea came to Alison after vacationing frequently to the islands with her husband. Starting their organization to address the problem of animal neglect and abuse, Alison has connected compassionate people in the area to help facilitate the process. Their process involves connecting interested adopters with their partner rescue organizations that will keep and save animals from the streets. Volunteers will help transport the animals to their new owners and homes.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Krista Almqvist, the Executive Director of Badass Animal Rescue. Based in New York, Badass Animal Rescue has rescued an approximate number of 3,400 dogs since they began operations in 2011. Their primary focus is saving dogs at risk in high-kill shelters in the rural south. They take in and treat dogs with skin conditions such as mange, dogs in need of immediate medical attention, and dogs with injury.

Badass Animal Rescue connects with their partner organizations in southern states to know the animal situation in these areas. Dogs will then be treated in these organizations and receive care in temporary homes before being transported to New York. Once the dogs are relocated, they will be given immediate medical assistance and a comfortable shelter while the rescue is working on ways to provide them with the best homes and potential adopters. They spend quality time with each dog. Donations help run the rescue.

Serving Central Texas area for 22 years, Highland Lakes Canine Rescue takes medically critical dogs out of shelters and save them from euthanasia. They treat animals in critical condition and help them in their recovery process.

Critical conditions include severe injuries and diseases such as heartworms and mange. They give these dogs a second chance at life and help them find families who can provide a suitable home for them. Their facility has all the resources for the dogs’ comfort and healing, such as a wide backyard and air conditioned indoor spaces.

When it comes to looking for families, Highland Lakes Canine Rescue conducts an intensive process in making sure that the adoption is the right fit. They also have partnerships with other animal organizations to collaborate on projects that help animals in their communities.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Genevieve Frederick, Founder of Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a non-profit organization that aims to provide care and support for the pets of displaced and houseless individuals.

The inspiration behind the organization comes from Genevieve’s experience in New York when she witnessed a homeless man who was taking care of his pet dog despite having no resources at all. Seeing compassion first-hand, she realized that the homeless community needed more than just a space to live, but also resources to provide care for their animals. She began reaching out to businesses and church organizations that donated pet food, grooming services, and clothing for animals. Soon, the organization expanded with volunteers and partnerships.

Today, Feeding Pets of the Homeless provides immediate care and services for the pets and animals of the homeless community, as well those in the company of veterans. This includes discounted medical services from veterinary hospitals and clinics within the organization’s network for the injured and sick pets. Their programs also enable them to provide livable spaces for the pets in temporary shelters so they don’t have to part ways with their owners whenever they stay in these shelters.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Amber Rose Beck, Special Projects Coordinator of Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T., and Ellie Lofts, Adoptions Head of the organization. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Successfully Managing Animal Rights Today. With their mission to raise awareness about animal welfare, the organization commits to finding homes for animals, mostly cats, and has expanded their campaign to countries like Greece.

Ellie explains that the organization has been working hard to help address the overpopulation of stray cats, a prevalent issue in Greece. Due to this overpopulation, residents don’t really find the need to adopt cats. This is why the organization opens doors for adoption opportunities overseas. They help transport the rescued cats in their shelters to interested owners in countries like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. also offers the opportunity for volunteers to help save the lives and advocate for the welfare of cats who are in need of homes and families. In Greece, they provide an internship program for vet students who can render their expertise in medicating animals and keeping them healthy.

Stand Up for Animal Rights with Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T.!

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, host Kris McCauley welcomes Antonio Lopez, the animal care supervisor of Humane Society of Sedona. The humane society saves around 600 animals per year. They work with rescue partners within and around Arizona, with the scope of their services and adoption opportunities reaching as far as Phoenix.

Apart from their programs that raise awareness about animal welfare and their services to provide adoptions for rescues, the humane society addresses common issues in their local area. Among these issues, the most rampant include the number of stray dogs roaming in the northern communities. Antonio wishes for people to help reunite these potentially lost dogs with their owners first before bringing them to the rescues. The rising number of community cats population also poses an issue. But they conduct activities with local veterinarians to engage the community in TNR activities so that issues of overpopulation and animal homelessness will no longer affect them.

The humane society has built partnerships with local businesses to pursue their mission. Most often than not, local businesses offer services to the animals they rescued. Pet food, as well as their donations, helps the organization provide the care and support that their animals need. When Kris visited their shelter last January, he was amazed by the quality of condition of the kennels that house the animals.

But what makes this radio station unique is its animal-centered informational program that plays every 30 minutes.

Gerard also hosts the Pet Cafe Program on the radio where he announces the list of adoptable animals from rescues and shelters across the United States. These animals are currently in need of families and lasting homes.

In this special episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we are honored to welcome Senator Scott Wiener of the California State Senate. Sen. Scott represents District 11, which covers the scope of San Francisco and its southern areas, as well as Broadmoor, Colma and Daly City. In his work as a government official, Sen. Scott has advocated for solutions to address housing problems, mental health issues and food security. He champions the LGBTQ+ and civil rights. Among these advocacies, he also campaigns for animal rights and welfare.

This year, Sen. Scott reintroduces the Senate Bill 879, also known as the Prohibiting Extraneous Testing (PET) Act. The bill will put an end to activities that involve testing household animals such as cats and dogs to determine the effectiveness of chemical-induced products. Some of these products include pesticides, food additives, and medications.

Sen. Scott also explains how San Francisco has been partnering with the humane society to address animal issues in their community. By phasing out pet stores that sell pets and closing down puppy mills, the government encourages people to adopt rescues from shelters. Providing homes for animals in need of care is one of the priorities in San Francisco.

Sen. Scott also encourages communities to collaborate with local advocacy organizations to campaign for certain legislations that need to be implemented in their locality. He points out that people’s engagements matter during a bill’s legislation process and a certain bill would have more possibility of being passed once people express their support for it.

Robin also shares advice on how to handle, address, and overcome compassion fatigue, a common experience among animal organization volunteers and staff members. She puts emphasis on taking an ample amount of time for rest. With proper self-care, no one will ever lose the original intention of the mission to help animals in need.

They have an open communication line for animal adoptions. They also conduct training programs for dogs in their behavior department.

The Animal League of Boston offers care and services to all kinds of animals. While animals commonly under their care are dogs and cats, they also cater to rabbits, birds, and aquatic and amphibians. They provide their services to the local community, but they also cater to animals nationwide by helping states with overpopulation issues alleviate and address their problems. They help them by providing these animals a means of transportation to get to their new homes or shelters.

Recently, The Animal League of Boston has just reached a milestone as an animal welfare organization by celebrating their centennial year.

She explains that animal communication can vary from one situation to another, and the best way to unravel what they mean to say is to listen and to rely on energy. Marth also explains that animal communication can help rescues and animal organizations by letting animals understand that they are being taken care of.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Kerry D’Amato, Executive Director of Pet Haven. Pet Haven is Minnesota’s first and long-time running foster-based rescue. Since it was established in 1952, Pet Haven has gone a long way in helping animals in their community. From giving temporary shelters to cats and dogs previously surrendered by their owners to connecting them with their forever families and suitable homes, Pet Haven addresses local issues concerning pets and animals.

Kerry also explains that animal behavioral issues often discourage owners from adopting rescues. She believes that animals always have second chances, and even when they have behavioral issues, they are able to overcome them through effective methods. Because of this, Pet Haven provides the care and rehabilitation programs that animals with behavior issues need and deserve.

Kerry also believes that lives need to be saved, even those of pets. Pet Haven is working towards reducing the animal euthanasia rate in their community, as well as saving dogs and cats who are in crisis because of this.

In this episode, we welcome Nikki Ruhl, founder of the Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center. Based in Camarillo, California, Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center aims to provide forever homes and loving families to stray and homeless cats in their community. As a cafe, their coffee drinks and treats complement their homely ambience where cats are sheltered.

As a veterinary technician, Nikki splits her time between managing the cafe and helping animals get medicated in animal clinics. Her passion in helping cats has inspired her to start this cafe. She explains that addressing cat euthanasia is one of the issues that the cafe aims to resolve. Today, Purrmaid Cafe and Adoption Center works with non-profit organizations that go into shelters to pull adoptable cats. The non-profit organizations will then find homes for the cats. The cafe provides a temporary home for at least 15 of these cats that remain unadopted until they find suitable owners for them.

After saving a dog from getting euthanized due to a broken leg, she decided to keep the dog forever. She named him Oliver. Lindsay also shares how she welcomes new dogs into her home and helps them adjust in their new environment. She encourages dog owners to take their time in letting old and new dogs interact so they can get to know each other and avoid conflict. Today, Lindsay is an active volunteer in her community in helping rescues and foster dogs find suitable homes and loving families.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Sandy Branham, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Digital Studio Director of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Jonathan Rust, President of the PAWS. As a student-led organization, PAWS carries out the mission to conduct TNR for cats within their campus and foster abandoned kittens for adoption. Members of the organization try to balance this mission in the midst of their academic responsibilities.

One unique feature that the organization maintains is their feeding station located outdoors on their campus property. This is where students feed the cats twice a day. Since they started as an organization in 2018, PAWS has served 123 cats. Currently, they are working on a new feeding station so they can provide food for more cats and encourage other students to participate in this humane initiative.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Emily Wright, Founder of the Barn Cats Project. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the Barn Cats Project aims to rehome stray and feral cats, as well as address their overpopulation issues in their community. Emily shares that the overpopulation of cats often threaten the population of native species and wildlife in Australia. Founded in January this year, her rescue aims to rehabilitate homeless cats so they wouldn’t have to prowl the streets and antagonize wildlife in rural areas.

Emily explains some of the initiatives that the Barn Cats Project is taking to fulfil their mission. Some of these examples include raising awareness through education programs, responding to calls related to the concerns involving cat colonies in neighborhoods, and providing homeless cats with proper homes. Although trap-neuter-return is illegal in Australia, the Barn Cats Project takes the necessary approach to connect homeless cats with the right owners and suitable homes.

In this episode, we welcome Kaitlyn Morris, founder of Mandy’s Paws Rescue. Kaitlyn started this rescue in 2019 to honor her late mother who had been an advocate for animal rescues for most of her life.

Kaitlyn shares how she has become inspired by her mother’s initiative to help and adopt animals. They would usually take in injured animals found on the streets of Los Angeles and nurture them back to their feet. Kaitlyn also shares some of the obstacles that she often encounters in running a rescue, most of which include facing criticism by sponsors. But eventually, Kaitlyn has learned the important ways to support the rescue. This includes vetting of foster families and checking if they have the ideal home and environment for rescue animals, getting connected with shelters and other rescue organizations, and keeping engagement with opportunities to help animals.

Currently, Mandy’s Paws Rescue has helped around 300 animals. They continue using their social media channels to network, amplify causes, and raise awareness. They are also currently working on their process to make the organization achieve a 501(c)(3) status.

Today, Doggy Dan trains packs of dogs at the dog daycares near his home.

The organization focuses on spay and neuter services for companion animals and free roaming cats. Their education programs and adoption opportunities raise awareness for potential pet owners to be fully informed about the ways and means in properly taking care of their animals. Francesca stresses the importance of forging community partnerships with TNR organizations. By teaming up with them, the organizations coordinate with trappers who are going out in the community and identifying cats that need their services.

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Gina Carbonari. Gina is the Executive Director of the Ulster County SPCA, a private non-profit organization based in Kingston, New York that aims to reduce animal cruelty and provide shelters for animals in need.

Gina shares the programs that the organization is currently handling to fulfill their mission. These include temporary homes for the dogs, cats, and other animals that they take in, adoptions to connect them with the right loving families, community assistance to make sure that pets stay in their homes, a food pantry,  and low cost veterinary services. Ulster County SPCA is the only organization within their community that carries out humane law enforcement and addresses complaints about animal abuse cases. They also host the Artists for Animals program where they feature an artist’s works every month  on their website and Facebook page and raise funds to support their organization.

Gina also shares the common issues related to animals in their community. Overpopulation is one that they seek to address by providing spay/neuter services. Serving the county for 130 years, they continue to pursue their mission by educating the community about pet ownership and enforcing laws that protect animals.

By establishing a network of rescues and building their partnerships, Pet Rescue Pilots continues its mission to help animals that are in need of loving families. Whether or not their potential adopters are located in different states, the organization makes it possible for these animals to become united with people who are committed to taking good care of them and giving them the best lives that they deserve.

In this episode, we welcome Sheryl Joyce, Founder and CEO of the Pet Pardon app. As the first platform of its kind, Pet Pardon aims to reduce animal euthanasia by spreading awareness about this issue and establishing a network and support for animal advocates, welfare and organizations, and pet owners.

Sheryl shares how she got the idea for the app when she discovered accounts of rescues and shelters on Instagram. When she learned about the rates of euthanized animals, even healthy ones that end up in shelters, she found the need to address it by using modern technology and utilizing current trends that educate and inform. By documenting the situation of animals in these shelters and releasing photos and videos on social media platforms such as Instagram, animal advocates can spread awareness about the animals’ situation and find support from similar communities. Pledging can also help support this advocacy.

Today, Pet Pardon app combines these features for a more convenient experience and to become a sustainable resource to help operate, fund, and support smaller rescues. After launching the first version of the app in March 2020, Pet Pardon now has hundreds of pledges from animal advocates and organizations. Currently, the app maintains its mission which is to support campaigns and advocacies that help reduce and entirely eradicate animal euthanasia in many countries around the world.

Jon recalls the time when he founded the organization. He says his passion in helping animals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with fitness programs like crossfit has inspired him to create the organization. With over 4,000 dogs being euthanized in the United States every day, he makes it a mission for his organization to help reduce these cases. His dog, Jackson, featured in the organization’s logo, continues to inspire him to acknowledge the importance of a dog’s life. Today, he and his wife are the core members of Reps for Rescues.

Aside from hosting and organizing fitness programs and raising funds through these activities, Reps for Rescues also releases educational videos for pet health awareness. He shares how Reps for Rescues has coped with the pandemic by maintaining engagement with their followers through an online competition.

Currently, Jon and his wife are raising awareness for adoptable dogs and supporting interested pet owners by helping them pay their pet bills and other resources that they need. They are also looking forward to hosting fitness programs for crossfitters, body builders, and fitness enthusiasts with the goal to support their mission in helping animals and animal shelters.

Serving the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico and the surrounding areas, Street Cat Hub provides humane spay and neuter services for homeless cats in these communities. Jayne recalls how she started the organization in 2014 as a follow-up to a program conducted by another animal welfare organization that partnered with city shelters in providing spay and neuter to feral cats.

Jayne also shares details about Street Cat Hub’s upcoming initiatives, such as their clinic and their partnership with the local shelter. Their organization finds it easier to provide services for feral cats when they are connected to the shelter. She also shares the common misconceptions on stray cats, especially when they need to adjust to a new environment before they can be comfortable in a new home.
