Diyari Yawarra

In the Diyari language, South Australia, yawarra means 'language' and mithanhi means 'in the land', so Language Landscape. In this podcast we discuss how signs can be used to make a local language a regular part of the landscape that people see every day, and present some signs in the Diyari language. It also covers the mardu of each class -- this is the animal, plant or natural feature which people have a special relationship with. There is a plant called yawa in Dieri that is referred to in English as 'wild onion' or 'bush onion'. This podcast describes how Dieri people dig for yawa and prepare them to eat. Dieri people traditionally cooked food in earth ovens using clay balls (called tyaputyapu in Dieri) as heat retainers. In December on a trip to Killalpaninna in Dieri country, Michelle Warren and her daughter and niece revived this method of cooking and cooked some lovely damper.
