Lessons from Leaders with John Argent | Let's talk about... Change

Lessons from Leaders with John Argent | Let's talk about... Change

Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with John Argent, CEO Six - a creative marketing agency.

As always, we encourage you to listen while you walk and we do the talking!

In this conversation, John reveals that change is the biggest disrupter that he is seeing right now and he talks through how they have learnt to adapt to change, the strategies and ways they work to ensure they continue to grow amidst change, doing great work for their people and clients alike.

The agency, like many other businesses, has seen considerable change in recent years due to the pandemic but also due to the nature of how the creative industry has evolved and diversified - with advancements in technology and digital.

For himself as the founder of the business, John has also seen considerable change as the agency has grown from 10 people in the early days to now being 50 strong.

John describes their business as human-centric and this comes through in how he talks about the focus they put on the people that work within the business.

John attributes the culture to the people that work within the business. They are encouraged to co-create solutions for their needs based on what’s relevant and meaningful to the people that work there.

We discussed flexibility and what this looks like for them as an agency. Rather than mandating a certain amount of days in the office, he wants his people to want to come into the office. They’re treated like adults, and they have created an environment that supports this thinking.

Initiatives such as their weekly Talkie Tuesday and monthly (in person) Connection Day encourage psychological safety, human connection and enjoyment.

We hope you find the conversation valuable. If so, please share with someone you think might be interested.

And if you’re interested in finding out more about how POINT3 Wellbeing can support your organisation then please don’t hesitate to get in touch at point3wellbeing.com

Lessons from Leaders with Nick Pritchard | Let’s talk about… Culture

Lessons from Leaders with Nick Pritchard | Let’s talk about… Culture

Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Nick Pritchard, People & Resourcing Manager from Cadence Innova.

In this conversation Nick generously shares some background about his own mental health journey and how this inspires him to support the mental health and wellbeing of all those that work at Cadence Innova.

Culture is the business challenge that Nick feels is most pressing right now. Particularly, the importance of social connection and the value of being together in person at work, to support the mental health of all of us better. We discuss how culture and ways of working have changed over the last 3 to 5 years and how this is having a detrimental impact on levels of loneliness.

Nick shares the initiatives and structures that they have in place at Cadence Innova from their families of peers who support each other in place of traditional managers and reportees, through to the office anchor days and social activities they introduce to create connection.

We talk about the different cohorts of people that need particular support - from the younger generations through to those who are juggling the demands of work with the demands of parenting through to those going through peri/menopause.

Nick reminds us we are human beings not human doings… and how the pandemic has provided us with a window (through Teams or Zoom) into people’s home lives, giving us a more holistic view of the people we work with - helping us to be more empathetic and understanding of everyone’s different worlds and struggles.

Listen for great ideas on how to build engagement in your people through trust, the power of listening, vulnerability and peer to peer support.

As always, we encourage you to listen while you walk and we do the talking.

We hope you find the conversation valuable. If so, please share with someone you think might be interested.

And if you’re interested in finding out more about how POINT3 Wellbeing can support your organisation then please don’t hesitate to get in touch at point3wellbeing.com

Lessons from Leaders with Dr Sarah Berry | Let’s talk about… Menopause

Lessons from Leaders with Dr Sarah Berry | Let’s talk about… Menopause

Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Dr Sarah Berry about the (peri)menopause.

Sarah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King's College London and Chief Scientist at ZOE. She’s also the Lead Scientist on the ZOE Menopause Advisory Board.

Sarah’s academic background is nutritional science but in this conversation we talk specifically about the important subject of menopause and how nutrition and lifestyle are so connected to the menopause.

More and more the menopause is becoming recognised as an important subject to be discussed in the workplace - helping to demystify and bust the stigma that surrounds it.

There is still much mystery around the menopause - which affects more than 50% of the population (women and trans-gender men roughly between the ages of 45 and 55 - that said, it can begin earlier).

And with women over 50 now representing the fastest growing demographic in the UK workplace, that means that an increasing number of employees are going to be experiencing menopausal symptoms during their careers, which can be very distressing for them.

Not only will it impact those experiencing symptoms and this life change, but also those around them - their colleagues, friends and family, so this is an opportunity to continue to normalise the conversation, raising everyone’s awareness and understanding in this natural process of change for women and trans-gender men, so that those going through this life stage feel less lonely, more supported and understood in the workplace and beyond.

In this conversation we hope to raise awareness and provide some practical solutions too for those who are struggling now or in the future and for those looking to support someone they know going through this period of their life.

Awareness is always the first step to getting the right support for you.

Lessons from Leaders with Gemma Bullivant | Let's talk about... Grief

Lessons from Leaders with Gemma Bullivant | Let's talk about... Grief

Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Gemma Bullivant, a specialist in grief coaching and training, helping individuals to positively address and recover from all forms of traumatic change and loss, including bereavement, redundancy and divorce.

In this conversation, we navigate the subject of grief, in a bid to break down the stigma that surrounds the subject and help those struggling with their own grief and those around them to support themselves and each other with more compassion, greater understanding and awareness.

Before you listen, it’s important to acknowledge upfront that this is an emotive subject that we will be discussing, so, please take care throughout and after.

If you do need to speak to someone, you can call the Cruse Helpline on 0808 808 1677 for grief support right now.

And if you would like to speak to someone at POINT3, we are all Mental Health First Aiders and Nicky and Sarah are trained instructors too. Contact the team here.

Grief and bereavement present enormous emotional and practical challenges for people in the workplace. The bereaved often feel alone and isolated. Talking openly with others is a way to help process the grief but it also helps others understand what people are going through, so they can be more supportive.

As always, we encourage you to listen while you walk and we do the talking.

Julian shares some of the organisational challenges that are coming through in the conversations he’s having with leaders on his podcast and in the coaching sessions he’s having.

Lessons from Leaders with Julia Phillips | Let's talk about... Burnout & Balance

Next up in our Walk The Talk – Lessons from Leaders series, we talk with Julia Phillips, Owner, Founder and Event Director of Potting Shed Events.

As always, we encourage you to listen while you walk and we do the talking!

Julia recently launched her latest agency Potting Shed Events in June 2021 and now works with a small portfolio of clients on their event programmes both in the UK and overseas.

This was a special conversation for us as Julia was our first ever client at POINT3 Wellbeing back in June 2018. Five years later we are proud to still be working together.

In this conversation Julia shares the journey she’s been on over the last five years and what’s most important to her in terms of building a business and culture with mental health and wellbeing at its very core.

We discuss burnout, work-life balance, flexibility and how it relates to the events industry now and to the organisations that Julia’s agency works with.

Julia is passionate about creating a culture which promotes prevention, one where her team of mostly women feel supported with relevant ways of working, resources and benefits for them.

Within the conversation Julia references a book and a podcast which can be explored here - How to Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell and Dr Maryhan, How Not to Screw Up your Kids.

We hope you enjoy the conversation, we certainly did!

Meet the founders

Meet the founders

In June 2022 we celebrated our 4th business birthday, so to mark this milestone, we are hosting a special edition of Walk The Talk – our podcast for HR professionals and business leaders interested in the mental health and wellbeing of their people.

In this episode the tables are being turned and we the co-founders – Nicky, Sarah and Siôn – will be in the hot seat answering the questions for once!

We’re delighted that Zoe Tuffs, Talent Development Coach will be hosting this special episode. Zoe has been working with us over the last 6 months, helping us to crystallise our longer term vision for POINT3 Wellbeing. Zoe has helped to challenge how we work and what we’re working towards – as we strive to be a business with true purpose, that is delivering genuine impact and value for our partners and their people, whilst fulfilling all our own personal goals and aspirations.

Why join this episode of Walk The Talk? Zoe will pose some pointed questions to us about our vision, purpose and values, what we’ve learned as a business and people, how we’ve changed as a business and people, as well as asking us the questions you want to ask us…

Be the change you want to see within an organisation

In this episode of Walk the Talk we are delighted to be joined by Matt Vickers for this conversation. Matt is a practising Integrative Psychotherapist and a  Corporate Mental Health specialist - recently leaving BP where he played a pioneering role in driving a culture of wellbeing.

The conversation covers human connection in the corporate world. We will look at why this is important and how it is weaved into an organisations culture.

We unpack the power of culture and how we drive positive shifts within organisations - did you know it requires just 13.5% of an organisations workforce to be on board to start a movement.

We take stock and look at the easy wins for an organisation - from Conversation Cafe’s to a regular drumbeat of wellbeing and mental health inspiration.

And if you are interested in learning more about our Mental Health Awareness Training this page details more about how we support businesses when it comes to safeguarding employees from a mental health perspective.

Unpacking psychological safety

Unpacking psychological safety

Listen to our webcast with Executive Coach and HR consultant, Gemma Bullivant FCIPD PCC where we unpack psychological safety, why it’s so important in the remote world of work at the moment, why it’s the core ingredient to high performing individuals and teams and ways to promote a culture of psychological safety in the workplace.

As discussed in our previous episode with Dr Megan Swanson, employee burnout is on the rise… so we need to look at ways we can reduce this in the workplace… and one of the first things an employer can do is promote a culture of psychological safety… as this encourages people to talk openly and to ask for help where needed.

And it’s arguably even more important to discuss this today… as it is more difficult than ever to create a culture of psychological safety due to the remote / hybrid nature of how we are working. It requires more trust and engagement than ever before… so the more awareness and consideration we can apply to how we are approaching our conversations and managing our teams at the moment with the principles of psychological safety, the more engaged employees will be, leading to higher performing teams.

Check out our dedicated page about our Building Resilient and High Performing Teams manager training which covers psychological safety.

How to burn bright and avoid burn out

How to burn bright and avoid burn out

In this Walk the Talk episode we talk with NHS clinical psychologist, Dr. Megan Swanson, M.Ed., PsyD where we discuss burnout, and ways to burn bright in 2021 and beyond.

Burnout is defined by the W.H.O as an occupational phenomena caused by chronic workplace stress.

It is of increasing concern for people as we navigate the modern day stresses of life and the changing ways we work as a result of the pandemic.

And while there is no single panacea for burnout, there are steps that organisations and individuals can take to help mitigate the risk of burnout.

In this first episode of Walk the Talk we chat with clinical psychologist Dr Megan Swanson about the rise of burnout during the pandemic.

We look at stress, the stress cycle and why we get ill after a prolonged period of being in the stress state, before we discuss solutions to overcome stress and to avoid burnout.

And if you are interested in learning more about our Mental Health Awareness Training this page details more about how we support businesses when it comes to safeguarding employees from a mental health perspective.

We’ve also created a special How to Hybrid Well(being) Series of mindset talks to help raise individual and collective awareness amongst employees during this time of change, so that they have the tools to help themselves and each other, so they can perform to their best regardless of the circumstances.

Breath for clarity

Breath for clarity

In today’s conversation we’re delighted to be joined by Allie Williams as we discuss the science and theory that shows just how powerful the breath to regain balance and control in our busy lives.

We finish today’s conversation with a 15 minute breathworks experience.

Allie Williams embodies a busy professional - she works in the corporate world of comms + PR which she manages alongside her busy career as a yoga instructor + breathworks trainer. She tells us about how using simple breathing techniques has enabled her to manage her work load, her ADD and to support her friends.

In advance:

Any comfortable seat that allows you to find a long, straight spine will help through the practical breathworks experience.

Session Disclaimer - we won’t be doing stressful breath holds however depending on your state of mind the holds might be stressful - if this is the case return to your own natural breathing rhythm.

For individuals with asthma we’re looking at controlling the pace of the breathing rather than creating anything artificial

If you’re interested in hearing more about this experience or any other training to help your people stress less and smile more then please do reach out to us through be_well@point3wellbeing

In the meantime, enjoy the conversation.

Shining a light on Gen Z

Shining a light on Gen Z

In the upcoming Walk the Talk episodes we will be discussing different demographics within the workplace in order to drive understanding and connection for all within organisations.

In this conversation we shine a light on Generation Z, joined by a trio of guests who bring fresh insight, knowledge and real world experience to the conversation to help us unpack the values, drivers and desires of Gen Z in the workplace.

In this episode we chat with Emma Richardson - Learning + Development Advisor at Carpmaels + Ransford, Jay Richards - Co-founder and CEO at Imagen Insights and Thomas Arkell - student studying mechanical engineering at the University of Bristol.

We hear that providing fulfilment, enjoyment and collaboration in the workplace are some of the ways that we can help Generation Z, the leaders of tomorrow, thrive in the workplace.

Referenced within the conversation are two recent reports that focus on Generation Z, they can be found here:

By having conversations specifically about mental health and wellbeing in the workplace we all have the opportunity to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, so everyone feels comfortable being themselves at work, helping individuals to stress less and smile more - in turn enabling organisations to thrive.

How to optimise your hybrid / remote work strategy

How to optimise your hybrid / remote work strategy

Listen to our conversation with Adam Jones, CEO Venn Media where we discuss how to hybrid and remote work well.

This time of change is an opportunity for organisations to reimagine their workplace… culturally, as well as practically, so that it’s one that is as high performing as it can be, and meets the needs of both the organisation and its people.

On the back of the launch of Remote-First, an online community of remote first leaders, Adam shared his perspective on the remote first workplace, what it means, how it works and how to create a positive, thriving remote first workplace culture that supports the mental health and wellbeing of people…

Listen to hear us discuss the challenges and opportunities that remote first working presents an organisation and its people, how to maintain culture and collaboration, how to help employees find that elusive work-life balance and other ways to ensure the mental health and wellbeing of people in a remote working model is prioritised as much as possible.

This is a fascinating conversation whether you are considering a hybrid/remote working model of working or not. There’s lots in here for leaders and HR professionals interested in the mental health and wellbeing of their people.

Busting the stigma of mental health in the workplace

Busting the stigma of mental health in the workplace

Listen to our conversation with Dan Strachan, Crisis Recovery Service Coordinator at Richmond Borough Mind charity, where we discuss the stigma that surrounds stress, burnout and mental ill health in the workplace and ways to help bust stigma at an individual and organisational level.

Stigma is sadly one the main reasons that holds people back from moving from minimum mental wellbeing to maximum mental wellbeing.

And there are some staggering statistics around stress, mental ill health and the associated stigma:

1 in 5 people take a day off due to stress. Yet, 90% of these people cited a different reason for their absence (Time to Change charity).

60% said that stigma and discrimination are as, or more, damaging than the symptoms of their mental health problem (Institute of Psychiatry).

Less than half of employees say they would feel able to talk openly with their line manager if they were suffering from stress (Time to Change charity).

So, the more we as individuals and as organisations can do to help break down this stigma, then the more likely people will be to open up and go on to seek the appropriate help and support that they might need.
