Barry, Abigail, and special guest Bill Boyle (finally) discuss Bill’s “Phone-a-Friend” submission, Tim by The Replacements, and sample Senate Beer, Raised By Wolves, and Big Tomorrow from Right Proper Brewing Company in Washington, DC.Barry first discovered The Replacements after friends of the pod Terry Anderson and Jack Cornell performed (as members of The Woods) a cover of The Replacements’ Can’t Hardly Wait. Evidently, The Woods and The ‘Mats crossed paths many a time when both bands were actively touring the East Coast circuit. In fact, Barry commented that the dark humorous writing of Waitress in the Sky is similar to Terry’s Anderson’s writing style.Bill referenced this ad for Piels Beer. This album has been remixed by Ed Stasium, a producer and engineer who worked on albums by The Ramones, Talking Heads, and The Smithereens! Bonus: Stand Up! with Pete Dominick DNC Correspondent

Bonus: Stand Up! with Pete Dominick DNC Correspondent

When Abigail had the incredible opportunity to attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, in August of 2024, friend and mentor of the pod Pete Dominick offered her an even more incredible opportunity: to serve as the official DNC Correspondent for the Stand Up! with Pete Dominick podcast. This is a compilation of the two segments she recorded for the podcast, as well as an exclusive segment for Pete’s Patreon supporters - of which Barry and Abigail are two.For a dozen years, Pete hosted a fabulous public affairs show on Sirius XM Radio. His unique and humorous perspective on current events coupled with his great long-form interviews made this Barry's primary source of news for many years. In October 2019, Sirius XM made the awful decision not to renew his contract, due in large part to his resistance to the rehiring of Steve Bannon as a Sirius XM host. With nowhere else to turn, Pete started his own daily podcast, relying on subscribers as his sole source of income. Shortly afterwards, the COVID-19 pandemic afforded Pete the opportunity to create a weekly social hangout for subscribers. This quickly became an important means of connection for people isolated during the pandemic. This community quickly became a new group of virtual friends from all across the country. As the world has reopened from the pandemic, many of those newfound friends have met in person - most recently at the 2024 inaugural Stand Up! PodJam, at which we recorded our first-ever live episode!Pete and his community have been amazing supporters of our podcast from the beginning, and Abigail was extremely honored to be his DNC correspondent.Up next… Who’s Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. Christmas Beers (Straight No Chaser and Gifted Beers)

Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow  and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I’ll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen’s harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes’ version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser’s version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail’s second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser’s version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who’s Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. Is This Wit (The Strokes and Brooklyn Brewery)

Barry and Abigail discuss Is This It by The Strokes and sample Brooklyn Pilsner, Brooklyn Brown, and Pulp Art Hazy IPA from Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn, New York. Abigail was most familiar with The Strokes’ fourth album, Angles, featuring the epic opening track Machu Picchu. Abigail read into the lyrics of Soma trying to find a connection to the fictional drug from Brave New World. Barry shared that there is an actual drug called Soma (Carisoprodol), a muscle relaxant with addictive potential! Neither Barry or Abigail believed that the band was referencing the lingerie company of the same name! Abigail compared the meaningful comma in Alone, Together to that in Take a Break from Hamilton. Barry, of course, compared it to the comma in the Second Amendment… Up next… Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Ed Sheeran and Passenger recorded an acoustic mash-up of No Diggity by Blackstreet featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen and Thrift Shop (feat. Wanz) by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Watch it here! The Rise and Fall of the Chapel Monks (Chappell Roan and Barrel of Monks Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan and sample Single in Savannah, Abbey Terno, and Three Fates from Barrel of Monks Brewing in Boca Raton, Florida. Read more about how Chappell Roan spent 7 years becoming an overnight success. Listen to Good Luck, Babe! Watch the music video for Red Wine Supernova. Watch Chappell’s performances on The Late Show and The Tonight Show. Learn about the theory that Chappell is referencing Miss Piggy in her looks. Barry shared a mashup of HOT TO GO! and Hey Mickey by Toni Basil for credit at the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music. Compare the two music videos as well! Amateur Podcasters (Lil Dicky and Woven Water Brewing Company)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Dinos Korominas discuss Dinos’ Jukebox submission, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, and sample Failsafe, Banana Split Fusion, Luminous, and Matterhorn from Woven Water Brewing Company in Tampa, Florida. Dinos recommended the music video for Lemme Freak. Molly features Brendon Urie of Panic at the Disco. Listen to our recent Panic! At the Disco album review, A Crowler You Can't Pour Out (Panic at The Disco & Disco Witch)! Barry loves the music video for this song! Bruh… reminded Abigail of Live at Union Square, November 1986 - Live by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Listen to our review of that album, Jukebox: He’s the Drinker, We’re the Talkers (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Evil Genius Beer Company). Abigail first saw Hannibal Buress’ comedy on @midnight, a comedy panel game show that focused on the Internet’s reactions to current events. Barry correctly recalled that a viral joke from one of Buress’ comedy sets started the chain of events that eventually led to Bill Cosby’s downfall. Read more about that story and listen to Buress’ reaction to the events. Watch the music video for $ave Dat Money (feat. Fetty Wap & Rich Homie Quan). Cans (k.d. lang and Cigar City Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don’t Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies’ version (in Barry’s eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band’s The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang’s vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland’s performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time. We discussed the incredible backstory of Till the Heart Caves In, which is a “cover” of a Roy Orbison song that was never recorded. lang and Orbison had a previous connection as lang performed in Roy Orbison & Friends - A Black and White Night in 1988. Read more about the special! We believe that Jane Siberry wrote Hain’t It Funny specifically for k.d. lang. On Siberry’s album, “Hain’t It Funny” is preceded by k.d. lang, a series of recorded voicemails between Siberry and lang. Classic Rewind: Hoptenders (The Pretenders and Chapman’s Brewing Company)

Read Uncle Todd Sider's obituary. If you are so inclined, charitable donations in his honor can be made to the Dr. Todd Sider Training, Education & Excellence Memorial Fund at the Parkview Health Foundation or to the Congregation Achduth Vesholom fund for Adult Education. Barry, Abigail, and guest Todd Sider (Abigail’s uncle and Barry’s brother-in-law) discuss Todd’s Jukebox submission, Pretenders by The Pretenders, and sample Harvester, Undaunted, Dr. Jekyll Low Cal Hazy IPA, and Mr. Hyde High Cal Imperial IPA from Chapman’s Brewing Company in Angola, Indiana. Abigail's only knowledge of The Pretenders prior to reviewing this album was their Christmas song 2000 Miles. Other woman-led punk rock bands of this era mentioned were Pat Benatar, Heart, and Blondie. Try listening to Eminence Front by The Who or Where’s the Orchestra by Billy Joel with only one headphone in! This album includes a cover of Stop Your Sobbing, originally by The Kinks. Dadzapita (Shana Cleveland and The Tank Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail and special guests Matty and Maddie Carlson discuss Manzanita by Shana Cleveland and sample La Playita and El Farito from The Tank Brewing Co. in Miami, Florida. With this appearance, Matt, who literally just founded our five-timers’ club, is the inaugural member of our six-timers’ club. Barry called him the Larry "Bud" Melman of Pops on Hops. This episode came out of Matt’s interview of Maddie on her favorite albums of 2023. He also interviewed fellow Substacker Kevin Alexander on the same topic. Shana Cleveland is also in the surf rock band La Luz, who just released a new album! Watch Shana’s live performance in the KEXP studio. Matt educated us on the Mellotron! Abigail and Barry both entered Light on the Water into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music: Abigail with a comparison to Baby Genius by Eels, and Barry with a comparison to Rain by Hans Zimmer. Abigail shouted out Hoplark, which brews nonalcoholic hop teas! Maddie used Gold Tower to talk about her interest in tarot. Read more about the tower card! Matt compared Ten Hour Drive Through West Coast Disaster to 9th & Hennepin by Tom Waits. Though we didn’t discuss it in this recording, Matt is one of the most prolific men we know. He is a member of Harborcoat, The Stick Arounds, and The Pantones, in addition to touring as a solo act. In fact, Matty is probably coming to a city near you! Check out his tour dates! Abigail helped to host one of his house shows last summer, and it was an incredible evening. Parrotbarley (Natalie Merchant and Florida Avenue Brewing Co.)

Barry and Abigail discuss Tigerlily by Natalie Merchant and sample Dead Parrot, Passion of the Heights, and Luminescence Hazy IPA from Florida Avenue Brewing Co. in Wesley Chapel, Florida. Modelo is now the top-selling U.S. beer! Read more. Barry has seen Natalie Merchant in concert twice, most recently in 2023. Check out the setlist from the 2023 show! Abigail compared Wonder thematically to The Boy in the Bubble by Paul Simon. Barry was reminded of the story of The Elephant Man. I May Know the Word was written for the film Philadelphia but did not make the soundtrack. Cowboy Romance reminded Abigail of Price to Pay by Blues Traveler and Barry of The Fourth Drink Instinct by Cute Is What We Aim For. Abigail described Jealousy as “You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette without the problematic behavior.” Up next… Manzanita by Shana Cleveland, featuring Matt and Maddie Carlson! A Crowler You Can’t Pour Out (Panic! At the Disco and Disco Witch Brewing)

Barry and Abigail discuss A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco and sample Studio 54 Blues Blueberry NEIPA, Disco Sally’s Cookies, and Night Fever Porter from Disco Witch Brewing in Yulee, Florida. Barry heavily compared this album (for better or for worse) to The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch by Cute Is What We Aim For, which we discussed in Yeast is What They Brew With (Cute is What We Aim For and Yeasty Brews Artisanal Beers). We contrasted the Disco Witch’s succinct beer descriptions with the lengthy ones of Burial and Petty Thieves. Camisado is the name of a military technique: a surprise attack occurring at night, or at daybreak, when the enemy is supposed to be asleep. Read more! Barry entered the final note of Intermission into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison not to The Green Bee, nor to Flight of the Bumblebee, but to A Day In the Life by The Beatles. Barry gave Abigail a quick lesson on the baroque period. We learned all about Candi Syrup, Inc.! Barry compared But It’s Better If You Do thematically to Risque by Cute Is What We Aim For. Although our previous Beatles reference is not from The White Album, Abigail did organically bring up Savoy Truffle (it has been zero episodes since our last White Album reference!). Barry compared There’s a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven’t Thought of It Yet to this scene from Young Frankenstein. Also, The lacing of the smokes reminded Barry of the spiking of the eggnog (and the vocalization and the harmonies!) in Who Spiked the Eggnog? by Straight No Chaser. Barry’s second entry into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music was to compare Build God, Then We’ll Talk to My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music. Bonus: Moscow’s Revenge (Ginger’s Revenge)

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Lory Willard (who previously joined us for POH [Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Appalachian Beer Tour]) sample Moscow mule cocktails made with Original, Hibiscus Lavender, and Cranberry Herb from Ginger’s Revenge in Asheville, North Carolina. We have previously sampled several Ginger’s Revenge offerings in their pure forms on FrancePants (MuteMath and Ginger's Revenge), POH (Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Appalachian Beer Tour), and Malty Little Beers (Alanis Morissette and Leftover Beers). Barry picked up his habit of eating an apple “from top to bottom” from the semi-autobiographical novel Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. We took an opportunity to plug Dry Wrought Cider in Gainesville, Florida! We also plugged the NC Pickle Festival in Mount Olive, North Carolina. Lory is a fan of U Talkin’ U2 To Me?, the show that inspired us to start a podcast! We dove into an episode of “I Love Films” to discuss Lory’s dad appearing as an extra in The Lesser Evil, an early film in the Adam Scott canon. Watch Mr. Willard’s scene in the film! Lory plugged Botanist and Barrel Cidery and Winery in Cedar Grove, North Carolina, which brews their ciders with foraged fruits. Up next… A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! Jukebox: Rees-O-Rama (Silverchair)

Jukebox: Rees-O-Rama (Silverchair)

In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian’s Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,’ ‘It's a “B” Movie,’ ‘Cutting Edge,’ and ‘Worthless,’ all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we’ll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian’s dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks’ work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry’s weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C’s multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian’s new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. Twoflight Time (Bennie Wallace and Hiatus Brewing Company)

Barry and Abigail discuss Twilight Time by Bennie Wallace and sample Time Stands Still, Twinger, Mangoes At Work, and They Call Me Baltastic from Hiatus Brewing Company in Ocala, Florida. Barry has a personal connection to Bennie Wallace through his friend “Uncle” Steve Moore, whose Oscar-nominated animated short “Redux Riding Hood” features a score written by Bennie. Watch "Redux Riding Hood" or read Uncle Steve’s blog post about its production! Many thanks to Lucas Frank, owner and brewer of Hiatus Brewing Company, for sitting down with us to talk about the history and the branding of the brewery! Barry shared his other Los Angeles jazz experiences at Chadney’s, across the street from the NBC Studios. One memorable performance was by trombone player Matt Finders, who was part of Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band led by Kevin Eubanks. Check out Barry’s playlist of the songs that were covered by Bennie Wallace on this album! Abigail could not help but hear Silver Bells in The Tennessee Waltz. We were delighted to share the stage in Henderson, Nevada, with live recordings of six other podcasts: What Am I Making, Matt and Mattingly’s Ice Cream Social, Making Podcasts Great Again (on which Abigail appeared briefly; full episode on Patreon), Parenting is a Joke (on which Barry and Abigail were interviewed together, but the live episode has not yet been released), New Music for Olds (typically a written medium), and The Muckrake Political Podcast (full episode on Patreon). Nick Martino previously appeared on Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Not Just Our Two Hosts (Granian and Hops & Grain Brewing)

Barry, Abigail, and surprise special guest Becky Richey discuss On My Own Two Feet by Granian and sample The One They Call Zoe and A Pale Mosaic from Hops & Grain Brewing (brewed by Austin Beerworks) in Austin, Texas. Hops & Grain no longer has a taproom in Austin, but the two beers we sampled continue to be brewed by Austin Beerworks and are available at certain venues around Austin! Garen Gueyikian (the songwriter, lyricist, vocalist, and primarily instrumentalist behind Granian) co-wrote BOOM BOOM with Teddi Gold, which has been used in multiple commercials, including in an Old Navy commercial from spring 2021. Garen later formed Kill the Alarm. We played Kill the Alarm’s versions of Uncovered and Collide (compare to Granian’s versions of Uncovered and Collide). Abigail entered On My Own into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Survivor by Destiny’s Child (secondarily, I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor). Becky posed the question of our favorite song that employs the radio static effect. Barry entered Honey Pie by The Beatles (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!). Becky compared her love of Uncovered to her love of On the Way Down by Ryan Cabrera. Becky shared this video of Garen performing My Voice and breaking his guitar. Bonus: Guest Spot on "Stand Up with Pete Dominick, Episode 750"

Barry had the opportunity to spend some time with the man who introduced him to podcasting, comedian Pete Dominick. For a dozen years, Pete hosted a fabulous public affairs show on Sirius XM Radio. As the world has reopened from the pandemic, many of those newfound friends have met in person. Our podcast has benefited greatly from this community. We have had a number of guests from among the many musicians in this community, and you can spend some time with our new friends, including Jon Carroll, Matt Carlson, and Nick Martino in these episodes: Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Bonus: Guest Spot on "What Am I Making Podcast #006"

We had the pleasure of joining our friend, and frequent guest, Matt Carlson on the podcast portion of his new project, What Am I Making, back on March 27, 2023. Matt is a talented musician and songwriter from East Lansing, Michigan, whom Barry met as part of an online community created by Pete Dominick, the host of the Stand Up With Pete Dominick podcast. During one of their weekly hangouts, Matt shared the name of his latest band, Harborcoat. Barry caught the R.E.M. connection, which led to a Pops on Hops episode to discuss the album Joy is Elusive. The outtakes alone from that conversation also led to a Pops on Hops bonus episode to discuss Matt's Top Five R.E.M. albums. Matt has also contributed songs to our Christmas bonus episodes in both 2021 and 2022. So, obviously, when Matt asked Abigail and Barry to chat about the Pops on Hops podcast, they jumped at the chance! It is a fabulous discussion of the origin story of the Pops on Hops podcast! If you want to check out other episodes of the What Am I Making podcast, here are a few of our favorites! WAIM #044 - Kevin Alexander's Ten Best Albums Of 2023 WAIM #031 - Matty C & Rockin' The Suburbs - Live at The Lost Rhino What Am I Making #016 - Kevin and Scott Robertson of The Vapour Trails Up next… The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch by Cute Is What We Aim For. This episode will be released on March 3, 2023. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry’s condition. Barry and Abigail discuss Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (Music from the Original Motion Picture) by Bryan Adams and Hans Zimmer and sample Green Zebra Watermelon, Green Zebra Peach, Green Zebra Pineapple, and Green Zebra Mango from Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
