Episode 4: Human Trafficking in the clinical setting
Human trafficking continues to be a terrible reality in our society. In Texas alone, there are an estimated 313,000 victims at any given moment, and 79,000 minor and youth victims of sex trafficking. While we have examined the basics of human trafficking in a prior episode (Season 1: Episode 10), in this episode we dive into the clinical setting with Dr. Beck. Join us as we talk about how we identify it, what to do when we suspect trafficking, and resources that can be helpful.

Episode 3: Gun Safety in the Era of Constitutional Carry
In Texas, Constitutional Carry becomes legal at the beginning of September. What does this mean for gun safety? How can healthcare providers, gun owners and the general public ensure that gun-related injuries are minimized? We talk about these topics and more with North Texas expert Dr. Dan Guzman, a pediatric emergency room doctor at Cook Children's Hospital. His program Aim for Safety (Aimforsafety.org) has engaged with numerous parties within the North Texas area.

Episode 7: Racism in Housing and its impact on health
In the third episode of the special arc, we discuss housing issues, racism that surrounds it, and the impact that it has on health outcomes. Our special arc panel is joined by Ms. Demetria McCain of Inclusive Communities Project, as well as Mr. Jonathon Serafini, a housing attorney. Our discussion dives into concepts such as redlining, as well as disparities that exist at the ground level.

In our first live-stream episode, we discuss structural racism in health insurance, and explore concepts surrounding it. We are once again joined by our expert panel, Dr. Christina Robinson, Dr. Erica Spears and Misty Wilder.

Episode 5: Racism and social injustice in healthcare and research
As part of a major medical school in Texas, we felt compelled to have a dialogue about racism and social injustice in healthcare and research. Our three-episode arc starts off with an examination of the history of racism in healthcare, including the Tuskegee study. Along with our regular hosts, we are joined with a panel of experts who bring varied experiences to the discussion. Drs. Esplin, Jones, Robinson, Spears and Misty Wilder join us on this important and necessary dialogue. Our goal, as it always has been, is to open our hearts to our community, and try to help in some small way. Conversation is a critical part of this process, and learning from our past can help us to have a better future for all our fellow human beings.

Episode 4: Food Insecurity in the COVID era

We are joined today with a very special guest, who serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Ms. Julie Butner. In addition to her role as CEO, Ms. Butner is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian and has held leadership roles in multiple multinational corporations in the healthcare industry focused on food and nutrition, such as Aramark and Compass Group. Episode 3: Black Maternal Health Week
In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we discuss the issues that affect Black mothers, and what may cause the 3-4x increased death due to pregnancy among the population. This striking disparity exists even when health insurance status, education, and chronic diseases are taken into account suggesting there is something dangerous about being black pregnant and giving birth in the context of the United States. The month of April is recognized in the United States as National Minority Health Month – a month-long initiative to advance health equity across the country on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities. Our guests for this episode are Misty Wilder, Director of Healthy Start, Brianna Henderson, Founder of Let’s Talk PPCM and Jen Sarduy, President of ReBirth Equity Alliance, Their experiences are crucial in understanding our topic for today.
