Ep 34: Week 9 - Postpartum Diaries With Steph
I had a baby nine weeks ago and decided I’d like to share a bite size update each week of what postpartum has been like for me.
This is real and raw, no editing, no scripts, just me waffling on. Today I share about my Velcro baby who wants to be attached to me 24/7, how babywearing has really helped, and the frustration I feel at not being able to work, create and contribute to the postpartum world in the way I’m used to. I think it’s FOMO but I’m gently reminding myself that I have enough going on right now! I also chat about my postpartum wardrobe and a few changes I’ve made so I can feel a bit more comfortable in what I’m wearing.
I hope you enjoy. Come find me on Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

Ep 33: Weeks 6, 7, and 8 - Postpartum Diaries with Steph
I had a baby 8 weeks ago and decided I’d like to share a bite size update each week of what postpartum has been like for me.
This is real and raw, no editing, no scripts, just me waffling on. Today I’ve combined 3 weeks together as let’s be honest, they all blur together at some point! I’ve decided I hate the word Colic because it’s so broad and finding answers to it is so difficult! We are still experiencing a pretty disgruntled, gassy babe. I also share about hubby being back at work (waahhhhh!) and my six week check up.
I hope you enjoy. Come find me on Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

I had a baby five weeks ago and decided I’d like to share a bite size update each week of what postpartum has been like for me.
This is real and raw, no editing, no scripts, just me waffling on. Today I’m talking about the C word… Colic, and how difficult it is to manage because it’s difficult to pinpoint the cause. I also talk about how this week has been the most challenging so far due to sleep deprivation and breastfeeding issues.

Ep 28: Fighting to breastfeed, with Steph and Clay
Breastfeeding never came easy for me. I feel like I was constantly fighting an uphill battle, wading through misinformation from midwives, stress, and overwhelm.
On today’s episode of the podcast I’m joined by my lovely husband Clay, as we remember back to three years ago when our breastfeeding journey began. It’s not all sunshine and roses I’m sorry to say.
Some of the issues we faced includes our son losing more than 10% of his body weight, nipple damage, quick feeds that didn’t meet the expectations of the hospital, and pressure to introduce formula top ups.
But we did get through it and now we are about to hit three years of breastfeeding.

Ep 27: When your breastfeeding experience shapes your career, with Amberley Harris.
How does a breastfeeding expert go breastfeeding her own children? Was it always easy? Did it come naturally? Were there any challenges? These are the questions I've always wanted to ask the amazing Amberley Harris.
If you don't know who Amberley is, you are in for a treat. She's a registered and endorsed midwife in private practice who helps women through the challenges of breastfeeding (I actually met her when my little one was 6 days old). She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to breastfeeding, you can actually go back and listen to episode 10 of the podcast where she talks more specifically about breastfeeding in general.
Today though, Amberley shares her own postpartum experience with both of her kiddos. She talks about how the experiences compared to one another, the challenges she faced breastfeeding her first bub, tandem feeding, the huge adjustment of going from one to two children and how all of that combined led her to the career she has now.

Ep 26: The importance of pelvic floor health, with Kath Baquie
Did you fall into the trap of doing too much too soon after your baby was born? It’s ok if you did, I think we all feel a sense of pressure to return to our “normal” activities in postpartum. But what we often find is that we can’t immediately do all of the things we used to with ease.
My guest on today’s podcast is Kath Baquie, the founder of FitNest Mama. She chats about her first postpartum experience where a casual walk to and from a cafe with her 2-week old bub left her feeling an intense pelvic floor pressure. As a physiotherapist for women she knew something was up and quickly learned she had a pelvic organ prolapse. This diagnosis changed the way Kath went about her days in that early postpartum as she began to rest more and listen to her body.
This experience also propelled Kath into the work she is doing now with women in her online community called FitNest Mama which helps to provide pregnant and new mothers with the exercises, support & resources to help get their bodies and minds strong again.
She also chats about her breastfeeding experience, the work that she does, and the juggle of going from one to two kids (and then to three!)
You can find Kath on her website: www.fitnestmama.com or on Instagram @fitnestmama

Ep 25: My baby will love sleeping in the bassinet right!? With Fiona Weaver (Mama Matters)
When your baby arrived did you have all these expectations around sleep, like that they would sleep for hours at a time in their bassinet and easily drift off each night to the land of nod? Yeah me too. Did you feel pressure to have them on a schedule and linking sleep cycles? Samesies. Are you incredibly familiar with the term ‘wake windows’? Yep, I am you.
And when that little bundle arrived, and none of your expectations around sleep were met how did you feel? Overwhelmed? Alone? Lost? Frustrated? Babe, you are not alone.
Today on the podcast I’m joined by Fiona Weaver from Mama Matters. Fiona candidly shares her experience of sleep expectations not being met and how it led her to learn more about biologically normal infant sleep. In fact, she now works with parents to support them through sleep challenges in an honest, gentle way.

Ep 24: Finding your “no” in motherhood, with Lulu Well
Yay a new podcast episode!!
Today I’m joined by the wonderful Lulu Well who shares her very vulnerable and raw postpartum story that was very much influenced by her traumatic birth.
Like many of us, Lulu went through a period of pleasing everyone around her except herself, saying yes to everything to keep everyone else happy and finally getting to a point of embracing the word “no”. Whilst dealing with PTSD which stemmed from her birth, Lulu sought help from a psychologist and started to rewrite her own birth and postpartum story. Her experience has also led her to become a postpartum doula (go gurrrrl!)
It was an absolute joy to hear Lulu’s story and I hope you enjoy it.

Ep 20: Your postpartum questions answered, with Steph
You asked, I answered.
Today’s episode is with little ole me, where I answer the questions you sent me via Instagram. I touch on village building, finding support, creating your ideal postpartum and looking after yourself holistically.
The tips and ideas I use here are really just scratching the surface in terms of the work I do with clients (I wish I could tell you all of the things but then the podcast would run for 6 hours!)
As I mentioned in the intro, bookings for 2021 are officially open! And I’m already booked out for February. You can download my packages at www.postpartumwithsteph.com and get in touch for a obligation-free chat.

Ep 19: When empowered birth leads to a career change, with Karli Smith
On today’s episode I’m joined by Karli Smith. Karli is a kick-ass doula living in the Mornington Peninsula, and has two children.
Her experience of postpartum was overall positive, as she had realistic expectations around sleep, and newborn needs (like how they want to sleep on you all day!!) She struggled with sleep around the six month mark, and feeling isolated at times.
Karli’s two positive birth experiences were also the catalyst for her career change. Concerned at hearing so many stories of birth trauma she quickly realised that her positive experience was considered rare and trauma had become normalised in the birth space. So she became a doula. And now she empowers women to find their voice, know their rights and prepare for a positive birth experience.

Don’t forget to enter my competition for a free 1:1 Postpartum Pep-Talk with me. Just leave a review of the podcast and send me a screenshot!! Winner announced October 9.

Ep 18: Becoming a single mother on the day your baby arrives, with Dr Sophie Brock
In the middle of the night when Sophie was 41.5 weeks pregnant, she had a gut instinct to look in her husband’s phone, something she had never done in the six years they had been together.
What she learned in that moment would go on to shape her postpartum experience and the rest of her life. Her husband was having an affair.
She confronted him immediately after finding the texts, and in that moment, she went in to labour.
I’m so grateful to Sophie for sharing her story on the podcast this week. While it is heartbreaking, it’s also an empowering story of motherhood, sisterhood, and discovering strength and resilience.
Dr Sophie Brock is a Sociologist who specialises in Motherhood Studies, and a single mother to her three-year-old daughter. Her work advocates for the liberation of mothers from the myths of perfect motherhood. Ep 17: Are you having a boy or a girl? Turning the tables on gender stereotypes, with Dr Kyl Myers
Today’s episode is a big one and I’m so excited to bring it to you!
I’m joined by Dr Kyl Myers who candidly shares her experience of Gender Creative Parenting.
In 2016 Kyl and her husband Brent welcomed Zoomer into the world. They didn’t assign a gender to Zoomer and use they/them pronouns when referring to them. When Zoomer is ready they will decide who they are. The idea behind this is to not assume Zoomer’s gender based on their anatomy and to raise Zoomer in an environment where they can understand gender beyond stereotypes.
As we know, gender stereotypes are forced on children when they are still in utero, with baby clothes separated into pink and blue in stores, couples throwing trucks or tiara gender reveal parties and slogans on onesies reading ‘future president’ for boys and ‘daddies little princess’ for girls.
Kyl also shares her postpartum story navigating breastfeeding, loneliness and how it took her nearly two years to start feeling like herself again.
She has recently written a book called Raising Them: Our Adventure in Gender Creative Parenting, she has a TEDx Talk, and was recently featured in Time Magazine.
Kyl is warm, funny and so generous in what she shares with me in this episode. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Ep 16: YOU GOT THIS SERIES: Why am I peeing myself? Pelvic floor health, with Kelly Pendlebury
Here are some stats that might shock you:
-1 in 3 women will experience in continence after giving birth
-1 in 2 women live with prolapse
-90% of women will experience sexual dysfunction in the 12 months after giving birth
-30% of women are doing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly
If you’re like me you would have received a pamphlet from the hospital with the 1 in 3 stat about incontinence, but no other practical, ongoing support.
So I’m excited to bring you this podcast episode today during Women’s Health Week with Pelvic Floor Physio Kelly Pendlebury where we chat about all things core and floor. Kelly shares her wisdom and insights about women’s health post-birth and offers advice for anyone who falls into any or all of the above groups.
I learned a lot from this interview and I would strongly encourage anyone suffering to contact a women’s health physio for support. Unfortunately this is another area of postpartum where women can be left behind but hopefully with more awareness (and Medicare funding!) we can help make some changes.
You can find Kelly on Instagram @flourish_physiotherapy and on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/FlourishPhysiotherapy/
Also, I have a new website! Learn more about me and my offerings here: www.postpartumwithsteph.com. And come say hi on Instagram here: @postpartum_with_steph

Ep 15: The pain and pleasure of motherhood, with Regan Figg
This is an exciting one, and listeners can join in a giveaway too! On the podcast today I’m joined by the amazing Regan Figg. With a background in exercise physiology and yoga teaching Regan never believed she would develop postnatal depression and anxiety, as she looked after her mind and body for a living. Fast-forward 6 months postpartum and she received the diagnoses of PND.
Through her struggle and overcoming the challenges of living with PND, Regan came out the other side. Like a caterpillar wrapped in a cocoon, eventually she emerged with wings, the butterfly goddess within had been awakened.
She used her experience and dark days to learn and grow, and now she is running a business that coaches, mentors and supports mothers to find their spark.
This episode not only covers the early postpartum but the equally important conversation of what comes next?
Regan has generously offered listeners of the poddy a chance to work with her for free in her Divine Days course starting September 9. This course shows you how cultivate ‘goddess energy’, living with intention and harmonising your feminine and masculine energies. It honestly sounds amazing and perfect for mamas who are currently in lockdown.

2. Leave a five star rating AND review of the podcast in Apple Podcasts

Ep 14: YOU GOT THIS SERIES: Baby brain, isolation and the patriarchy, with Julia Jones
Did you know that back in ‘hunter gatherer’ times our children were cared for by up to 14 adults each day!? Mind blowing right?
Today I talk to Julia Jones who runs the postpartum doula training company called Newborn Mothers.
We talk a lot about the village; what it used to look like and what it looks like now (hint: it’s basically non-existent) BUT we talk about ways to recreate it in the 21st century.
Julia is also really well versed in the science behind “baby brain” and how our brains change when we become mothers (you can even see the changes on a brain scan!)
She chats about isolation, and how to overcome it, especially now during stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne.
Julia has written a number of books about postpartum life including a recipe book which can be found here: www.newbornmothers.com
You can also find her on Instagram @newbornmothers and Facebook: www.facebook.com/NewbornMothers/

Ep 13: Grief and the fourth trimester, with Nicola Street
In this episode I chat with Nicola Street who is a postpartum doula in Auckland , New Zealand.
She’s a single mum of three kids so she has a lot of experience of the early days and months of postpartum.
After the birth of her first two children she had amazing support from her mum Bronwyn, who was an independent midwife. Sadly during Nicola’s third pregnancy Bronwyn passed away from a terminal illness.
Nicola speaks openly about what her experience was like in postpartum and beyond without her mother by her side, and how she copes with grief alongside the many emotions that play a role in early postpartum.
Nicola has embraced her experience to help her work and support with other women in postpartum, especially those who have or are experiencing grief at the same time.

Ep 12: You ate what!? Eating your placenta, breastfeeding, and newborn crying, with Joelle Thom
On today’s episode I’m joined by nutritionist and doula Joelle Thom. Joelle lives in Melbourne with her partner Zephyr and her 10-month-old son Elio.
Joelle shares her experience of early postpartum, what it was like to have support from her partner, private midwife and doula. She basically had the postpartum dream team! She talks about recovery from an episiotomy, breastfeeding and what support looked like for her.
We also have a very interesting conversation about placenta consumption, which I’m always fascinated about! Joelle had her placenta cooked and she ate it for lunch. She also encapsulated some too.
She also shares about the hardest few weeks and months for her when her son would cry for hours on end each evening. It’s such a difficult thing to experience but Joelle really had to learn to surrender to it and ride the wave.
You can find Joelle on Instagram @joelle.constance and as always you can come say hi to me here @postpartum_with_steph

Ep 11: Beyond the first 40 days - breastfeeding, co-sleeping and casual racism, with Lauren Parr.
On today’s episode I’m joined by Lauren Parr. Lauren is a single mum to her 2.5 year old son Marley. She’s recently moved back to England after living in Australia for a few years. She is a yoga teacher and emerging doula.
Lauren talks about how she had plans to sleep train and start formula feeding at six weeks. Then her baby arrived and that all went out the window!
She talks about her first 40 days of postpartum where she really honoured herself and her boundaries, and spent that time bonding with her son without too many interactions with the outside world.
She speaks about her experience of pregnancy and postpartum as a mixed race woman, and how she has found her voice to standup for herself and her son when confronted with racism.

Ep 9: What happens when you are treated like a Queen after birth? With Georgi Fitzpatrick
I know I say this about every episode BUT I love this one! I’m joined by Georgi Fitzpatrick who is originally from Romania but now lives in New Zealand with her two sons and husband.
She works in a range of different ways with women and birthing people. She teaches about pelvic floor health and returning to exercise postpartum, teaches yoga and kanga training classes.
On the podcast she shares about her first postpartum experience where she had great support from her family and was basically treated like a queen for the first few months after birth (like all women should be!) But after those initial few months she moved to a new town in New Zealand where she knew no one. She talks about the ways she tried to meet new mums and find her community.
After the birth of her second son she talks about the challenges she had breastfeeding compared to her first son. Coupled with postpartum was also the diagnoses of her first son with autism. Georgi speaks so openly about this, about her sons autism and how she navigated all of that during early postpartum.

Ep 8: Life after birth trauma, with Anna-Maria Flynn
Today’s episode is with Anna-Maria Flynn. Anna-Maria is a first time mum to Alaska who is 8-months-old.
Anna-Maria talks very openly about her experience with early postpartum after experiencing birth trauma. Her plans to have a quiet 40 day postpartum experience were quickly dismantled when she realised how much she needed her friends and family around her for support. So much so that when Alaska was two-weeks old the two of them flew from their home in Hobart to Melbourne to be with her village. She also talks about how her husband experienced post-natal depression, and how that effected their relationship. Anna-Maria also shares about the challenges in her breastfeeding journey after the removal of her breast implants.

Ep 7: Baby sleep and the pressure to sleep train
Today it’s just me, Steph, chatting about my experience with baby sleep and sleep training. I must admit I was feeling quite angry when I recorded this, so really this is a huge vent from me! This episode stemmed from a post I put up on Instagram about how my dad was left to cry it out when he was a baby. It was accompanied by a photo of him literally strapped down into his cot. The photo breaks my heart and it struck a chord with many people, mainly mums, who have felt this pressure to sleep train. This episode is just my thoughts and opinions, I’m not an expert and don’t claim to be. You can see the original post on my Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

Ep 6: Motherhood and Martyrdom with Marnie Hillier
Today’s episode is with Marnie Hillier, a New Zealand based business owner, mum, and wife. Her business, Ms Marnie, is a t-shirt and accessories line, but like she says, it’s so much more than that. Through her business she’s created a women’s empowerment movement. Through the slogans and images in her products she has brought together a community of women who are supporting each other and themselves through the ups and downs of mum life.
Marnie also shares openly and honestly on her Instagram about the challenges she faces as a mother and a wife. She is a deep and critical thinker and is always willing to question the things in her life that aren’t serving her.
Today a lot of our conversation focuses on sleep, baby sleep, adult sleep, sleep deprivation. We also talk about martyrdom and motherhood, about how for a long time Marnie felt like she needed to put all of her needs last in order to be a good mum, which in the long run left her burnt out, and exhausted. 18 months ago her husband became a stay at home dad so Marnie could run her business full time from home, which she talks about too. You can find Marnie on Instagram @msmarnie_is_here.

Ep 5: Life after miscarriage, with Steph
In 2017 I had a miscarriage. I decided that I wanted to talk about it in more depth so on today’s podcast that exactly what I do. I talk about the period of time after pregnancy loss where the world just seems cruel and unfair. Where you go from loving this tiny little baby, to losing everything you had dreamed of, and all the plans you had for this little life come crashing down. I talk about how I learned to cope with loss, how I grieved, and how I commemorated this little soul. You can connect with me on Instagram @postpartum_with_steph

Today’s episode is a big one! I’m joined by Melbourne based doula Jess Quain, who has three earth babies and one star baby. Her most recent little boy was born five weeks ago so Jess has been navigating postpartum life during a pandemic. She talks about isolation with a newborn and two other children, breastfeeding after a breast augmentation, and the ups and downs of new motherhood. Jess also shares the story of her first daughter Lily-Ann who was born sleeping at 33 weeks. This lead to Jess experiencing postpartum depression and psychosis after the birth of her second daughter. Jess is a remarkable woman, full of warmth and wisdom. She has come so far in her journey as a mother and it is beautiful to witness. You can find her on Instagram @jess.quain. I hope you enjoy today’s episode.

Ep 3: Can your first postpartum journey help shape your second? With Rachael Rose
In today’s episode I’m joined by Rachael Rose, a mother of one who is pregnant with baby number two. We chat about her first postpartum experience where she navigated breastfeeding challenges and loneliness, and how she has taken the lessons from her first experience to help shape things second time round. She speaks candidly about trusting her gut and shunning strict routines and schedules like ‘feed, play, sleep’. Unlike her first postpartum experience, Rachael has built a community around her to help support her and her family during postpartum. Rachael is a Wollongong based birth and postpartum doula, a heart centred business mentor and women’s circle keeper. You can find her on Instagram @the_rachael_rose.
