#02 - The Current Worldwide Status of the Avian Influenza Virus - Dr. Joseph Giambrone
The latest outbreaks of avian influenza have raised concerns for the poultry industry. We already know a lot about influenza, so what are we missing? Are we prepared to deal with an endemic outbreak in the United States? What aspects should be taken into account when designing avian influenza control and mitigation strategies? In this episode, I talk to Dr. Giambrone about all of these issues, including the current situation of avian influenza in the United States and around the world, and possible strategies to handle it.
"In case of a new avian influenza outbreak, I think the US will wait and see how these other countries vaccinate and control it to know how best to respond themselves." - Dr. Joseph Giambrone

A molecular virologist, immunologist, and epidemiologist, he has been working on understanding viral pathogen ecology for 42 years. As well as developing new and effective vaccines, he led efforts to improve the detection and surveillance of viral diseases. He also developed vaccine strategies to protect commercially grown chickens against pathogens, like avian influenza viruses, that have infected humans. His research has had a profound impact on practices used today to reduce the incidence and severity of viral diseases in commercially grown poultry.

#01 - How can disease diagnosis help to promote poultry production? - Dr. Saad Gharaibeh
Poultry production faces disease challenges every day, Avian influenza being one of the most critical. Thatโs why we must better understand how the diagnostic process works so we can help our veterinarians reach a timely diagnosis and evaluate our biosecurity programs properly. In todayโs episode with Dr. Saad Gharaibeh, we talk about the importance of disease diagnostics and how it can help improve the poultry industry.
"There are different diagnostic techniques for different diseases and stages of the disease, so you must be wise in choosing the one that best fits the situation you have on your farm." - Dr. Saad Gharaibeh

๐ ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ด๐๐ฒ๐๐: Dr. Saad Gharaibeh grew up in Jordan, where his father ran a chicken farm. In 1996, he completed a bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. Then he completed a Ph.D. Program and a residency in veterinary pathology at the University of Georgia in 2001. Dr. Gharaibeh has held positions as a diagnostician at the Clemson University Diagnostic Center, a diagnostician, researcher, and poultry disease instructor at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and as a poultry disease instructor, researcher, and avian histopathologist at the Poultry Disease and Research Center at UGA. He currently works as a poultry pathologist at the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, both at UMN.
