129 - How the REVISED WFTDA Return to Play Guidelines Affect Your Team
The REVISED WFTDA Return to Play Guidelines are FINALLY here! What do they mean for your team? It means most leagues can go directly to Baseline and get on this flippin' ladder and SKATE! In this episode, I will do my best to summarize these guidelines as well as the Audience Guidelines for Return to Play.

127 - Small League Survival Guide
Coach Dan is here! After last week's episode about taking on obstacles, I wanted to follow up a topic we've been wanting to discuss for a long time. What are the challenges smaller leagues tackle regularly? And what can small leagues do to survive? All leagues around the world have been wondering about their mortality as of late, but we fear small leagues will be hit the hardest and since the majority of leagues in the world are small (like our own league), we want to show them some love with this episode.

126 - Facing Obstacles Unlocks Your Superpowers! (aka Play the Unplayable Piano)
In this episode, I'm sharing stories of how obstacles pushed people to new creative heights and made them try things they never would have attempted otherwise and how we can relate this to our growth as roller derby athletes and taking on challenges our leagues and teams face regularly (especially after last year, amiright?). Bottom line -- experimenting with obstacles and facing your challenges head on can unlock superpowers you didn't know you had! Inspired by the Cautionary Tales Podcast by Tim Harford, check it out!

125 - Coaching the New Curriculum! (with special guest Chili of the WFTDA Task Force)
Many listeners have been wondering, what is it going to be like to return to play? And how do we help our coaches use the new curriculum?
In this week's episode, I was joined by Chili, Coach of Pink Peril Roller Derby in the Netherlands and member of the WFTDA Task Force for the new curriculum, This Is Roller Derby. Chili's league got to return to play for several months last summer and shares the story of the league's challenges. He also elaborated on how he has been implementing the core values of the curriculum for his league while sharing tips for all the coaches out there listening.

123 - What if...? (on HBO's "Women of Troy" documentary)
What if Michael Jordan's injury in his second season in the NBA was the end of his story and we never heard from him again?
This episode is a Story Time with Jackie episode! Based on the HBO documentary "Women of Troy", I'll be telling you the story of Cheryl Miller and the rest of the USC basketball team that changed women's basketball forever. This amazing team made up of Cheryl Miller, Pam and Paula McGee, Cynthia Cooper, and more changed the sport and challenged issues of gender and race. This team got the world's attention and laid the groundwork for being a professional sport today. What if Cheryl Miller hadn't gotten injured and became the most famous professional athlete in the world? How would the world be different? I can't help but compare this journey to roller derby and wonder....what if?...

122 - Answers to YOUR Questions about the New Curriculum!! (featuring special guest members of the Task Force)
We're moving into a new era of roller derby without minimum skill requirements! This means we can get more people involved in the sport and playing the sport more quickly. But what does that look like? Do we still do tests? Are laps gone forever?
This episode will be very beneficial to your team and league as an introduction to the new curriculum. Our guides on this quest are special guests who all worked on the curriculum as part of the WFTDA MSR Task Force. We dive into the history of the task force, the research into how other sports looked at the skill level of their players, the goals, the challenges, and answers to the frequently asked questions about the future of what roller derby will be.

121 - Crash Course on Culture (What Your Team Needs Right Now) with special guest leadership coach, Iggy Perillo
Let's clean out your league's culture closet and only keep what sparks joy!
This year might be your best opportunity EVER to have a real impact on your league's culture. The team you return to will not be in the same place mentally, physically, or emotionally after the long off season. So what better time is there to have a chat together about what you want your team and league to be going forward? What will your new goals be like? What changes would you like to make before getting back on the track?
Bringing back special guest leadership coach, Iggy Perillo (she/her) so we can clean out this culture closet together. Who decides your team's culture? Listen to find out!

120 - I'M BACK!
Where you started does NOT determine how far you will go. Anything IS possible.
This episode is about:
- my continued recovery from Post Concussion Syndrome
- how using self compassion instead of a drill sergeant mentality whenever you are making lifestyle changes can help you better on your journey long term
- how exercise impacts cognitive growth in your brain (wow!)
- what I've been watching during the break that I really think you'll enjoy.

119 - Identity Loss and Post Traumatic Growth
This week, I want to talk about Identity Loss after Trauma and Post Traumatic Growth. I think this is a very relatable topic because even though I came to it through concussion recovery, I feel like these ideas are sooo applicable to so many situations in life so I think I can reach every one of you out there with this one and I love it when an episode can touch everyone. Trauma could be a concussion (It's called traumatic brain injury!), any type of injury, maybe being diagnosed with a chronic illness, a traumatic incident in your life or even a world-wide pandemic perhaps. This has been a traumatic experience for many around the world and I’d argue we all have a bit of trauma to one degree or another from living through these times. Any incident in your life that makes you see the world as "Before" and "After" leaves you at a crossroads figuring out who you are and who you can be going forward as a better athlete, teammate, leader, and human being.

118 - Derby Names
Let's talk about derby names! How do you pick one out? Are derby names necessary? Are derby names outdated? What do derby names mean to you?
Special note: When picking out a derby name, please please take time to evaluate if your derby name could be hurtful to any group of people. If you're not sure, run it by several people of different backgrounds that you trust to help.

117 - Concussion Phenotypes and being your own Health Care Advocate
This week, I want to go into detail of the different types of concussion symptoms and what different types of specialists you can follow up with in your recovery. In the second half, I talk about advocating for your own health care when you are injured, particularly if you have bad health insurance. I want to help you with avoiding getting shuffled around, asking the right questions, finding out the different options you have, getting multiple opinions, and when you are FINALLY in front of the right specialist, making sure you get the right treatment.

115 - NO MORE 27 IN 5???
In this episode, Coach Dan and I discuss the newly announced Vision and Objectives that have been released by the WFTDA concerning the future of Minimum Skill Requirements. New curriculum? No more official test?? Program recommended but not required?? What does the future of roller derby look like when the individual leagues determine qualifications for playing derby? What pressure does this put on coaches and leadership? Will more skaters come back to roller derby? Will there be favoritism? And biggest of all, does this mean NO MORE 27 IN 5?!?

What are YOU doing in your roller derby league that makes people want to move off your island? What can you do to make your island (league) more welcoming to others? 110 - FUN vs SERIOUS...A Roller Derby Struggle
Some of us want to be super duper serious in roller derby and achieve way hard. Some of us don't want to play this sport unless it's fun. How do we find the balance? I share the story of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal butting heads over their different personality types and experiences with different roller derby leagues and how we tackled this age old dilemma.

109 - I'm Great and You're Not...Level Up Your Team
If roller derby goes away, are we still friends? Or is this all our relationship is built on?
This week's podcast starts off examining different types of relationships and their foundation. Then our main focus is the FIVE stages of organizational culture that determine what you can achieve together. How do you overcome trust issues, apathy, and sarcasm? How do you put aside egos and constant squabbling to unite for the good of all? How can you use a crisis or common enemy to come together?

PUNCHY O'GUTS Special Guest! - 105 - Inclusive Coaching and Return to Play Training
This episode, I spoke with Punchy O'Guts of 4EYES Coaching + Publications. Punchy is invested in using positivity, compassion, and forward-thinking to connect with, challenge, and inspire athletes. Punchy has published FIVE manuals for training those in roller derby as well as several articles in Five on Five Magazine.
This conversation focuses on a curriculum for safely returning to training on the track. What should we watch for? How do we know when our skaters are ready for the next stage? (apart from WFTDA guidelines, of course)
Then we turn to the topic of Inclusive Coaching. To quote Punchy's blog: "Coaches have an incredible amount of power. It’s so important to acknowledge the power we have and use our leadership role to make derby culture more inclusive and safe. We can make intentional decisions so that our behavior, decisions, and language are not focused on creating a space that is only safe for white, cis folks. We must actively choose to create a space that is inclusive and safe for marginalized folks."

104 - Racism in Roller Derby: Don't Pass the Star
We need to address racism in ourselves and in our teams and leagues. Don't juke around it. Break through the wall. It's a harder path and can be really uncomfortable at times, but we can come out stronger on the other side. Do the work.
In this episode, I talk about the broader meaning of words we have heard for decades. We can't go further in our pursuit of Anti-Racism in roller derby and our lives until we understand more about what these words mean. I'll be sharing a couple examples of what this looks like in roller derby and want to give a trigger warning in advance for any BIPOC who don't have the space to deal with that right now. I believe changing our systems and way of thinking about racism has to take place before we can go on a mission of recruitment for people of color to join our leagues. We can’t bring them in until we take some meaningful steps to make our house better before we invite people over. There are cracks in the foundation and we’ve been throwing a rug over it and not noticing they exist. Then I’ll go over some examples of how to approach meaningful interactions to help correct these problematic situations one on one. How do we talk to someone when they say something racially problematic? And how can we receive this information graciously when we make a mistake ourselves? Let's hold each other accountable and move forward together.

ERIN JACKSON Special Guest! - 102 - Embracing Opportunities to Learn
This week, we get to learn about the inspirational journey and competitive mindset of Erin Jackson.
Erin Jackson is a jammer for Jacksonville Roller Derby AND Team USA Roller Derby. Erin grew up in inline speed skating with many national championships and was named Female Athlete of the Year for Roller Sports three times. Months after learning to ice skate, surprising everyone including herself, she qualified for the 500 meters long track speed skating event at the 2018 Winter Olympics. It was also announced in early May that Erin is on the US Speedskating Long Track National Team for 2020-2021. Did I mention she’s doing all of this while furthering her education?

BALLER SHOT CALLER Special Guest! - 101 - Racism and Call-out Culture in Roller Derby
This episode is NOT sponsored by Mota.
“Don’t stop having conversations because it’s uncomfortable. I’ve been uncomfortable 32 years of my life. It’s ok for white people to be uncomfortable for the next couple years if it means that everyone is going to be equal and not judged because my skin is different...
Social Media has given people this keyboard warrior mentality where they just say awful things about human beings. Ok, this person messed up and they’re trying to remedy it. NOPE! Once this person, always this person and there’s no rehabilitation and you’re awful and you should jump off a cliff. What in the world has our community and culture come to?...I think the issue is that we’re calling people out with no resolution.”
Please share this episode...the message is really important.
This week's topics are racism and call-out culture in the world of roller derby. The special guest is Baller Shot Caller. Baller has played for Gold Coast Roller Grrls, Atlanta Roller Derby, and Team USA Roller Derby and has been voted as captain for all three. She excels at jamming and blocking and often plays as pivot and is a traveling coach with Tuff Love Coaching.

My Gratitude Letter to Bonnie D. Stroir - A Very Special 100th Episode (The Puppy Talk and Leadership Lessons)
To celebrate our very special 100th episode, I am giving an audio letter of gratitude to Bonnie D. Stroir. She inspired me on my path to becoming a better athlete, teammate, leader, and human being.
I met Bonnie D. Stoir in 2013 about a month before she retired from roller derby after skating and coaching for over a decade. Bonnie D. Stroir was the first full time traveling roller derby coach and she spread her lessons all over the world, but it was more than just skating. It was about bettering yourself as a person in interpersonal communication and conflict management, treating yourself with compassion and improving your ability to learn, and developing leadership skills to inspire others and pulling the greatest potential out of the people you lead. In this episode, along with my sincere thanks, I am sharing lessons I learned from her that made the biggest impact on developing myself and others over the years to become as awesome as we could be in one lifetime.
When we met, I was at a crossroads in my derby career and wasn't sure if I'd make it another season. She opened my eyes to new ways of leading, communicating, and learning that gave me hope for the future again. If our paths hadn't crossed, I don't know if this podcast would exist.

099 - The Science of Gratitude
People love complaining. It seems harmless, it connects us as human beings when we can vent to each other or agree with each other on social media. Venting seems to make us feel better. It makes us feel less alone. But what does it really do? You might get a positive boost from that connection but what happens afterward?
We can improve our health and wellbeing, enhance our relationships, encourage healthy sleep, heighten feelings of connectedness and so much more...through the practice of gratitude. I'm going to take you through the science based research on the topic and all the benefits and share ways to express gratitude that go beyond the homework assignment of keeping a journal and are more sustainable for your life.

098 - The Future of Roller Derby with Double H (Executive Director of the WFTDA)
Releasing this special episode with Double H a day early!
In this episode, we discuss the future of roller derby and the big questions that are always being asked. Should roller derby be an Olympic sport? Will roller derby become a professional sport? Will there be a future where I tell someone I play roller derby and they DON'T ask if I elbow people? What's with the pay gap for women's sports and how is the pandemic affecting this? And the big one -- what does the return to play plan look like and when can we start playing roller derby again?
Erica Vanstone (Double H) is the Executive Director of the WFTDA. Erica previously acted as the organization’s Chief Media Officer, where she developed the mission-forward broadcast program, WFTDA.tv. After working in the film and television industries for more than a decade, Erica began a career in nonprofit management and sports. She has acted as an announcer for the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, the Arena Football League, and more. Erica is dedicated to expanding perspectives of inclusion around women’s sports and is shaping the WFTDA vision for transformation as it continues its mission to improve and grow the sport of roller derby and its service to the derby community.

The History of Roller Derby (Story Time with Jackie)
I researched the history of the sport of roller derby from 1935 to 1999. From Leo Seltzer and Transcontinental Roller Derby to RollerGames of the 1980s... What a strange journey our sport has had! The endurance races, the staged fighting, the Alligator pit, RollerGames the video game...there is SO MUCH to unpack here.

LOREN MUTCH Special Guest! - 094 - Growing Up in Roller Derby
“It’s so easy to fall in love with roller derby when you’re part of something bigger than yourself that pushes you.”
We have a special guest this week -- Loren Mutch!! After starting out in junior derby, Loren Mutch became a jammer for the Rose City Rollers in Portland, Oregon. Besides being A-MAZING at roller derby and one of the most driven athletes in our sport, Loren Mutch is very sweet, humble, and delightful to talk to.

This is the story of the highest scoring jam in roller derby that is NOT on the greatest of all time list...but it should be. Because it features two of the best teams in the world duking it out at the highest levels of game play at a medal game at Champs.

BORK BORK BORK Special Guest! - 091 - Rebuilding Your League
This week, we are joined by Bork Bork Bork of Windy City Rollers. Windy City had large turnover in 2015 and made organizational and cultural changes to rebuild their league over the next FIVE YEARS. (Yes, it takes a LONG time to rebuild!) Bork shares how it was done and the important areas of focus in the process as well as ways to stay better organized as a league.
Plus that BIG question -- how do you get people to do things they don't want to do and help out with the league?

Asking for Help, why is this so hard for us? (RUNBACK)
Why do I talk about Harry Potter in this episode?!??! You'll have to listen to find out. ;-) Continuing from our last episode of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, this episode focuses on asking for help. Why do we struggle with this in general? Is it a badge of honor to do it all on our own? Is admitting we aren't perfect or have it all figured out so bad? Let's talk about how asking for help can make you a better skater, teammate, league member, and human being and all the positive benefits.
