Halloween Jokes Bonus! 🎃 🐶 👻

Halloween Jokes Bonus! 🎃 🐶 👻

Who's ready to get this party startled?!

We love Halloween and jokes so much that we decided to throw together this bonus episode of just super fun Howl-o-ween dog jokes and some of our favorite regular Halloween jokes for spooky season.

And, if you haven't yet, be sure to check out our super sweet "Howl-o-ween" special! It’s a fun, exciting, and magical tale of tails- about a pair of young raccoon-type twin dogs living on Dogland. This story can be listened to without having listened to our serial episodes in Seasons 1 & 2. Although the story has some mild suspense and Halloween-adjacent fun, it is mostly fun and silly and meant to delight young listeners (age 4+) and old. It will lift your spirits and give 'em pumpkin to talk about!

Special thanks to our creative partner Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. This episode featured a bit of Jason's Howl-o-ween version of a family favorite song, In the Hall of Mountain King by Grieg, who hated the song and wrote it to be a parody of the music of the time that he disliked. We love all of Peer Gynt and encourage you to check it out! Stick around to the very end of this jokes episode to hear a public domain symphony arrangement courtesy of Orange Free Sounds- a great resource for free audio.

This podcast was made possible, in part, by a grant from The Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland, OR.

Bonus | Guide Dogs for the Blind are Power Dogs on Earth!

This is a very special bonus episode of The Adventures of Power Dog in Dogland that we decided to make during Summer break because we got to learn more about some superpower dogs right here on planet Earth this summer. Our deaf-blind cousin Lindy came to visit us and attended a summer camp created by Guide Dogs for the Blind. When we reached out to the organization, they were happy to teach us more through emails, conversations, and even a tour of the Guide Dogs for the Blind campus in Oregon. In this episode, you are going to hear our talks with cousin Lindy before camp, Outreach Specialist Jane Flower, and then Lindy again, after camp. Not only did we learn about Camp GDB, but we also learned about the very 🐾pawesome🐾 K9 Buddy Program. Thank you to Lindy and Jane! For more information on Guide Dogs for the Blind’s FREE programs for youth who are blind or visually impaired, visit guidedogs.com. Special thanks to our creative partner Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. He also provides original music including our opening theme song, which is sung & performed by him and the wonderful, talented Jen Bernard. Even if your child doesn’t grow up to discover their LGBTQ+ identity, it is paramount that they become staunch LGBTQ+ allies if we want to lower these horrific statistics and save the next generation LGBTQ+ youth. Yes, the situation is that dire. This is not a light burden to carry, especially as a parent trying to raise kids in a world that is hostile to the LGBTQ+ community, especially while you[re juggling busy schedules. But you’re in luck because we’re here to help :)

Valentine's Day & Dogland Love Day Bonus 💓

Valentine's Day & Dogland Love Day Bonus 💓

We are taking a break from our regular, ongoing story while we celebrate Valentine’s Day here on Planet Earth and Love Day on Dogland. We revisit the speech Dogland President Bernie Sandals gave about loving their world. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we all made Valentine’s Day about loving this world we live in? We also talk about how it isn’t exactly accurate to say that dogs are colorblind, and we share a bunch of silly jokes!

Special thanks to Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. He also provides original music including our theme song, which is sung by him, and our background music. Jason was not able to edit this episode, but he set Phoebe & Hank up for success and a fun learning opportunity, which they enjoyed wholeheartedly. They had a blast using the free and fantastic resources at freeSFX dot com. We sourced nearly 30 fun sounds from their site!

Jim Cheff, the creator of Mary Farfisa's Outer Space Radio Theater, illustrated Power Dog for our cover art, which was designed for this bonus episode by Phoebe and Hank using Canva. If you like the design and our jokes, check out our free, printable Valentine's Day cards!

We overjoyed to have been given permission to share the song that plays at the very end of this episode–called I-L-O-V-E-Y-O-U by Melanie Dill, from the album Rainbow Lemonade, which was one of the best children’s albums ever created and followed one of the other best children’s albums- Alphabet Parade. Thank you, Melanie Dill! Fun fact, Hank learned to spell the word “love” from singing along to this song, and he still sings it in his head when it’s time to write it down.

Thanksgiving Bonus | Dogsgiving & Native Heritage Month: Grateful for Every Plateful!

Thanksgiving Bonus | Dogsgiving & Native Heritage Month: Grateful for Every Plateful!

We’re taking a little break this week, but we still put together this bonus episode to share fun jokes & ridiculous food puns, and some more fun music from Hank’s Granny, aka Jeanie Murphy.

We also share a bit more about the famous Dogland saying, “We are all connected at our roots, and rooted in our connection.” It feels perfect to talk about connection at this time. We round out the episode with a talk about Native American Heritage Month and share a trailer from one of our favorite shows and a special song from their incredible composer.

Stay past the jokes to hear the trailer for Coin Trick, https://www.cointrick.net/, a narrative series that follows 12-year-old Cassidy and the flute-playing mischief-maker Kokopelli on their adventures through a fantasy world based on Native American mythology.

We are blown away, honored, and excited to share a song gifted to us by Coin Trick’s composer, Shelley Morningsong, https://shelleymorningsongonline.com/. Shelley has also written a gorgeous children’s book, and it includes a free audio download that we are loving in our house.

This resource from IllumiNative called "How to Center and Be a Good Ally to Indigenous People this Thanksgiving" is an excellent read. https://bit.ly/3FIELv2

We really enjoyed this article from PBS about finding ways to honor the real history of this time in the US: https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/thanksgiving-practicing-gratitude-and-honoring-the-real-story

We are really impressed by this coverage in Teen Vogue: Land Acknowledgements: https://www.teenvogue.com/story/indigenous-land-acknowledgement-explained

We create this show in the ancestral lands of the Multnomah, Wasco, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Cowlitz, bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other Tribes of the first people who made their homes along the rivers here in what is now called “Portland, Oregon.” These groups created communities and summer encampments along the Columbia and Willamette rivers and harvested and used the plentiful natural resources of the area for thousands of years. Today, the Native community of Portland is the 9th largest urban population in the USA.

Bonus | Three Turkey Songs from Granny 🪕

Bonus | Three Turkey Songs from Granny 🪕

Hank's Granny, aka Jeanie Murphy, recorded three fun old-time turkey songs with her banjo for us, and we thought they were too great to keep to ourselves--especially in a season of giving! Hank had a lot of fun singing this particular Turkey Lurkey song with his fantastic music teacher at school, so he rang his Granny when he got home and they sang it together. We feel so fortunate to have a musical Granny, and Hank has been musical since before he was born. The two of them have been noodling on songs together since he was knee-high to a penny whistle!

"Turkey in the Straw" is an American folk song that first gained popularity in the early 19th century.

"Turkey Lurkey Run So Fast" is a classroom rhyme that Hank has really enjoyed.

"A Turkey Ran Away" is a traditional Appalachian song.

Musical Bonus | The Dogstrologer’s Song by Granny Dog

What problems, what forces

Against us shall bide

While the stars in their courses

Do fight on our side?”

You may have noticed that we are really grooving on the concept of the universe wanting all of us to succeed, to thrive, and to love ourselves as well as each other. During a recent visit with our own Granny Dog (AKA Jeanie Murphy,) we were honored to receive and record a banjo-backed song version of our epic poem from Season 2, Episode 15 called The Dogstrologer’s Song.

We illustrated this cover art using Canva.

S2E20 | The Yang in the Yin

Finally! We have found President Bernie Sandals! And, he has got to be the YANGist thing to ever happen to TIME YIN. Where has Bernie been? Who is behind the mysterious voice of Time Yin? And where will these dogs go next? Will there be pizza? Many season-long mysteries are at least partially solved in this illuminating episode. Listen closely, and you may hear what Bernie’s middle name is, and it’s a doozy!

We also meet a new, special character based on one of Hank’s teachers. If you’ve been with us from the beginning, then you know we’ve based a couple of characters on our wonderful teachers, and there will be more to come! Join Power Dog as he bids adieu (for now?) to the characters and place from Stories For Wonderful Children, and continues along his fantastical journey. Will he finally get to the dragon world of Draconus?

We discuss the concepts of emotional flooding, feeling overwhelmed, and attempting to shut down in this episode. We also begin a mini storyline about the moments when someone else is challenging us.

S2E17 | Power Cat?!

S2E17 | Power Cat?!

We are so pleased to share part two of this next leg of Power Dog’s adventure- a crossover tale of tails in which we visit the characters and place from Stories For Wonderful Children! Hosted by Dan Wendelin, this podcast is a fellow member show in the wonderful organization we belong to dedicated to high-quality audio for families called Kids Listen. You can also read more about Dan and his show on the Kids Listen Medium channel here: https://medium.com/kidslisten/get-to-know-a-show-stories-for-wonderful-children-d383379ecea9

Hank would like to especially recommend that you listen to all of Dan's stories, and especially the short series featuring the Cats of the Elysium. From Dan, "Deep in Antarctica lies the mystical Cat Elysium, a magical paradise for Flibbertygibit's feline subjects. Flip-Flop, the prankster of the royal cat family passes idyllic days there as caretaker. But when trouble comes to the Elysium, will Flip-Flop's joking ways be able to rise to the challenge?" The best place to start is with Stories For Wonderful Children Episode 37: Where's Flibbertygibit.

Bonus | Sea Stories for Wonder Ears & Sleepy Heads

Bonus | Sea Stories for Wonder Ears & Sleepy Heads

Thank you for tuning in to a special, bedtime-friendly bonus episode of The Adventures of Power Dog in Dogland about falling in love with the sea! There’s no loud, be-bopping rock anthem or toe-tapping banjo fun in this episode. Instead, you’ll hear Phoebe’s “sleepytime” voice, soothing ocean waves, and gentle music. We even end the episode with a solid five minutes of ocean waves gently splashing on soft, silky sand.

And, as many listeners have requested, this is a story about Taffy, Power Dog’s first cousin, and Tuffy’s twin sister. We have sometimes referred to her as the bravest dog in all of Dogland, but a quality she has that we really admire is her curiosity. For this young pup who sat by the sea and who wondered — and for other puppies who wonder — What sea stories are yet to be told?

We explain what “zoomies” are, how water travels through the world to become part of the ocean, what is left when you dry out ocean water, and what salt and lime crystals look like under a microscope.

This story is based on the first part of a short and lovely book in the public domain called Sea Stories for Wonder Eyes by Mary Earle Hardy. You can hear the book read to you for free at Librivox.com- an incredible online catalog of free, public domain audiobooks read by volunteers from around the world. A note to grownups: because most of the books, short stories, and poems featured in Librivox are from around a century ago, some content may not feel suitable for your families to listen to and might be worth a preview before sharing with your younger people. Feel free to reach out via our many social channels or email if you want to discuss this further.

Special thanks to Anders Lund for helping us record this episode. And, thanks as well to the über-talented artists at Orange Free Sounds, who provide a robust library of music and sound effects for others to use. This episode was edited using the phenomenally easy & intuitive Descript App, which we wholeheartedly recommend. (Affiliate link benefits our show.)

If you catch a moment, and can follow, rate, and/or review the show, we would be so grateful! It really helps get the word out for our small, indie, mom & pop & pup, family operation.

S2E15 | The Dogstrologer's Song

S2E15 | The Dogstrologer's Song

“What problems, what forces

Against us shall bide

While the stars in their courses

Do fight on our side?”

Adapted from Rudyard Kipling’s The Astrologer’s Song, this episode uses epic poetry to visit a dream state before Power Dog goes on to the next leg of his journey in our unfolding epic tale of tails for season two.

We strongly believe in the power of poetry! If you’d like to read more about why it is so important for students, then we highly recommend reading this article from Edutopia: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/five-reasons-poetry-needed-schools-elena-aguilar. Art is the crucial language of emotion, and poetry refines our language. Poetry is music, and poetry is therapy. Poetry is joy, and poetry can be a righteous rage. It can teach social-emotional learning and help us find better ways to understand ourselves and others.

If you love this episode, and it leaves you hungry for more great poetry for kids, we highly recommend checking out our friends and fellow Kids Listen member shows Buttons & Figs, Kids Poetry Club, and Mary Farfisa’s Outer Space Radio Theater- a musical story podcast with wonderful poetry and poetic language stitched into the music and dialog.

The adventure continues for the power pals on Dogland in this thrilling 8th episode of Season 2. The dogs are off again, but not before we examine the role of the fight, flight, or freeze response and how it is a natural part of your amazing brain, more specifically, the amygdala. Studies have shown that just learning about this can help kids manage anxiety and regulate themselves after surprises, stress, and fright. We love Anxiety Canada’s approach here, too: https://www.anxietycanada.com/articles/fight-flight-freeze-anxiety-explained-for-kids/

The adventure continues for Power Dog and his friends on Dogland in this exciting sixth episode of Season 2. We open with a recap, a reminder of where everyone is at this moment in the story, and a rousing speech from President Bernie Sandals about the call to love our world in uncertain times. Thank you to author Joanna Macy for inspiring the talk that inspired the addition of this speech into our story. Our conversation was a response to Hank’s growing awareness of ecosystems and climate change. Thank you to his wonderful 2nd-grade teacher, Mme. Kate, for raising awareness through creativity for Hank and his peers! We discuss the words ‘ecosystem” and “phenomenon” in scientific and contextual meaning in this episode as well!

S2E5 | Rewind to Bernie Sandals’ Super Circle Summit & The Deep Talk

S2E5 | Rewind to Bernie Sandals’ Super Circle Summit & The Deep Talk

We are so excited to be sharing this special episode with you, based on conversations we’ve had as we try to understand what it feels like to process, feel, define, and heal from trauma, what it means to find balance when you might be afraid of failure, and the strength we gain from family and community–making any adventures pawsible.

As many parents and carers of kids know, the daily practice of guiding young people through life ranges from challenging to silly, and back again, and it can take us to deep places on a dime. This episode goes deep. We talk about how trauma can pass from body to body, how interconnected we are, and why it’s a gift in life to experience failure. We use tools like deep belly breathing, rhyming jokes, EMDR to unpack distressing memories, affirmations of love, speaking our stories, and asking for help to lean into strength. And, we also share more about Mom Slice’s past as a champion swordfighter!

Also, one of the sweetest things Hank has ever shared about Dogland is information about the planet’s “Great Great Tree” and the slogan, “We are all connected at our roots and rooted in our connection.”

Some further resources for grown people are:

On trauma and somatic healing: My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem

On everything from failure to shame to healing to living a wholehearted life, Brené Brown.

And, for people of all ages, we recommend listening to fellow Kids Listen member show, Best Day Yet Podcast, a show serving affirmations, adventures, and mindfulness tools for calmer, kinder, more confident kids.

Special thanks to Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. He also provides original music including our theme song, which is sung by him and the wonderful, talented Jen Bernard. Jason was not able to edit this episode, but he set Phoebe & Hank up for success and a fun learning opportunity, which they enjoyed wholeheartedly. They had a blast using the free and fantastic resources at freeSFX dot com and Orange Free Sounds.

Bonus | Happy Howl-ukkah & Go Tail it on the Mountain Replay

We are continuing our break while we celebrate Hanukkah here on Planet Earth, known as Howlukkah- the festival of lights on Dogland. Phoebe and Hank have a few silly jokes to share, followed by a replay of our Winter Howliday tale- Go Tail it on the Mountain!

We’re so happy we can share this special Winter Howliday episode with y'all! It’s a little different, as it’s not part of our serial, ongoing story. Join the dogs and Tick Tock Bunny as they celebrate their shortest days of the year together.

We close out the episode with a very sweet Hanukkah song by one of our most favorite bands, Peanut Butter Jams. It’s called Chanukah Lights from their delightful Holiday Bops album.

S2E1 | In the Hall of the Dancing Dogs

S2E1 | In the Hall of the Dancing Dogs

Awwwoooooooooo! 🚀 🐶 Our new adventure kicks off with this exciting episode!

We are so excited to launch this new season's story this week! Season 2 is as adventurous and exciting as the last, but it's also got some great lessons about friendship, healing from trauma, why it's important to take risks, and how community and family are what makes risk-taking possible. We're also very proud of some great in-show and after-show jokes—one of which made Hank laugh harder than he ever has in his life! His parents had to check on him as he almost passed out from laughing!

We're putting our whole doggy hearts out here for this one, and we're thrilled you'll come along for the ride!

So come with us to Dogland, we've got special tales to tell! And when we come together all our tales will wag as well!

If you're new to our story, please go find episode 1, called "S1E1 | START HERE! | Power Dog Goes To College" as this is a serial story adventure that unfolds throughout each season. This story has been created by a mom+pop+pup team that started as bedtime stories with a toddler and grew and grew and grew! Over time, a whole, wonderful world emerged, and it was filled with good-natured (of course) dogs who believe in community, staying curious, and overcoming obstacles with mindfulness techniques and open hearts. At the center of this lovely pack is Power Dog, who is so named because he has so many powers that he doesn't even know what he is capable of yet.

Special thanks to our creative partner Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. He also provides original music including our opening theme song, which is sung & performed by him and the wonderful, talented Jen Bernard.

Halloween Jokes Bonus! 🎃 🐶 👻

Halloween Jokes Bonus! 🎃 🐶 👻

Who's ready to get this party startled?!

We love Halloween and jokes so much that we decided to throw together one more little bonus episode of just super fun Howl-o-ween dog jokes and some of our favorite regular Halloween jokes for the season! After the past couple of years, we all feel like celebrating just a little more than ever before, right?!

And, if you haven't yet, be sure to check out our super sweet "Howl-o-ween" special! It’s a fun, exciting, and magical tale of tails- about a pair of young raccoon-type twin dogs living on Dogland. This story can be listened to without having listened to our serial episodes in Seasons 1&2, but it is also how we are choosing to kick off Season 2.

This episode's cover art is by Mom Slice.

Howl-o-ween Musical Medley From Granny 🪕!

Howl-o-ween Musical Medley From Granny 🪕!

Here's a quick bit of Halloween fun from Hank's Granny, aka Jeanie Murphy, that we were so thrilled to have her record for us and our Howl-o-ween special with her banjo. We reworked this bit of old poetry over and over until it was ours, and then she set it to music. We feel so fortunate to have a musical Granny, and Hank has been musical since before he was born. The two of them have been noodling on songs together since he was knee-high to a fiddle!

Skin & Bones- a Spooktacular Tune from Granny 🪕!

Here's a quick bit of Halloween fun from Hank's Granny, aka Jeanie Murphy, that we love to play in our home and sing along with as well!

Jeanie played this old traditional songthat she learned and loved from Jean Ritchiefor and with her kids (that's Hank's mom & uncle) when they were little, so it's great fun to pass it along to another generation. We hope you enjoy it, too! If you love old songs and sing-alongs, we hope that you will check out Jean Ritchie! Bonus | Mary Farfisa's Outer Space Radio Theater

We are so pleased to share this first episode from this incredible, utterly beautiful, fun radio play story series, Mary Farfisa's Outer Space Radio Theater.

Mary Farfisa is an eight-year-old space-girl who travels the Galaxies on her space-horse, Briscoe. She goes from planet to planet, searching for “songs and sounds and music and noise” to share with the rest of the Universe. Mary catches the songs and sounds and music and noise in her “audio lasso.” Then she brings them to the Listener’s Library — an intergalactic collection of sounds, curated by music-loving super-beings called the “Listeners.” Over the season, you get to know quite a few endearing, exciting, and clever characters. Parents will appreciate the beautiful music, high audio quality, and refreshing dash of humor in the characters and dialogue.

Episode 1: THE SOUND STEALER - Mary Farfisa and her space-horse Briscoe visit Bazorbabill, where all of the sounds things make are mysteriously disappearing. Bonus | Merlin Tuttle, Hidden Hero of History! From the Dorktales Storytime Podcast

We are so pleased to share this episode of one of our favorite shows for kids, a fellow Kids & Families pick for Apple podcasts, Dorktales Storytime Podcast!

Hosted by Jonathan Cormur, this podcast is a fellow member show in the wonderful organization we belong to dedicated to high-quality audio for families called Kids Listen. It is also one of Hank's favorite shows. He loves listening to Jonathan & Mr. Redge discuss stories and historical figures, and he often has questions for both of them. The show creators love getting questions from kids, so if you and your family have any, be sure to reach out to them at this link!

We asked the fine folks of Dorktales Storytime if we could share this episode about Merlin Tuttle because it is one of our favorites and because bats play a key role in keeping our planetary ecosystem in balance. We love bats so much that we also collaborated with Jodi from Dorktales Storytime to compile a list of great show episodes about bats for Bat Appreciation Day that you can read here.

HIDDEN HEROES OF HISTORY | MERLIN TUTTLE

written by Molly Murphy and performed by Jonathan Cormur
