#39: How To Write (by Other Writers)

Marc happened upon this lovely clip of writers talking to Women's Hour about their writing tips and advice. Writers such as Prue Leith, Angie Thomas, Ruby Wax, Allison Pearson and Nina Stibbe talk about how to write and how they write, and how to write that book! Jenni and Marc pull out their highlights, what resonated with them, and also how Prue Leith manages to get her laptop into the toilets at cocktail parties (what if she needs a plug? Does she carry a rucksack? Does everyone else think she's just doing a massive poo? SO MANY QUESTIONS!).

Jen and Marc finally get chance to catch up on our thoughts about RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 4 (has Latrice had more chances than Shangela? Did Naomi make the right choice? Who's the real winner?) and we also chat all things season 11 (which has just started on Netflix/VH1), particularly which queens are standing out to us and who are early predictions might be.

Our next episode is nearly ready for your ears, so keep an eye out for that too x

Yes! We're approaching Eurovision season already! Whilst you're waiting for our next regular episode to emerge from the editting studio, Marc thought he would put together a tiny, bonus episode talking about one of the things he loves the most...no, not Kylie...Eurovision!

Just over half of the competing countries have announced which song will represent them this year, in Tel Aviv, so Marc takes us through some of his favourites so far, and also has a look at who the bookmakers are predicting to come out on top.

#26: How Do You Plot Your Book?

#26: How Do You Plot Your Book?

We have hit a wall in our book writing process, so we’ve decided to work on our plots.

Jenni and Marc break down some plots from famous novels and try and apply them to their own book. We also look at classic plot structures from Well-Storied.com, using Freytag’s Pyramid, the Fichtean Curve and the Hero’s Journey.

Also in this episode:
· Writing down the Status Quo
· Who is the main character in Lord of the Rings?
· Is Harry Potter the main character in the Harry Potter books? (yes, yes he is)
· Our main plot line appears to be ‘he’s being a naughty boy and shagging about a bit’
· Jenni’s kids book plots – 'The Dog Stuck in the Fence' and 'The Trip to the Post Office'
· An update of the effect of the lovely Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s book on Jen and reducing phone time
· Our amazing idea of a pub, where your loyalty card gets you story updates! Plus red wine and steak night!

#25: What’s The Right Writing Challenge for You?
Jan 28, 201934:24
#24: Reading for Pleasure VS Reading for Challenge

#24: Reading for Pleasure VS Reading for Challenge

We’re talking about reading for pleasure versus reading as a task. Following on from Jenni’s 2018 reading challenge against friend-of-the-show-Gemma’s husband Scott, Marc and Jenni discuss how the challenge went, how it affected Jenni’s love of reading and, crucially, WHO WON!

If you’re reading with one eye on the total, it really makes a difference about what and how you read. We discuss the choices that you make, as well as the books Jenni really enjoyed this year, which ones she read really quickly, and which ones she abandoned because they were just taking too long.

We also discuss the perfect environment for competitive reading, which may or may not involve a spa break paid for by Marc, and whether listening to an audio book counts as reading an actual book.

#21: 10 Useful Ways to Approach NaNoWriMo

It’s episode 21 of POW Podcast UK and with NaNoWriMo 2018 just round the corner, Marc and Jen look at 10 useful ways to approach National Novel Writing Month.

Are you planning to write 50,000 words in November to create a novel? Do you need some help with how to plan your month and stay motivated?

We used NaNoWriMo in 2017 with the aim of writing 5,000 words each, and we’re planning to do the same this year. We give you some ideas to help you along the way from our experience and other great tips we found about organizing your writing. We don’t want you to feel like it’s a chore, so follow our advice to really enjoy NaNoWriMo and the community it creates this year.

We talk about pacing yourself, freewriting, using practical support and much more. We also manage to digress into our tsundokus, some terrible singing, even worse inventions and the importance of making sure your dinner choices take exactly 25 minutes to cook so you can write a book while you wait.

#20: How to Overcome Impostor Syndrome

#20: How to Overcome Impostor Syndrome

Do you worry about what your parents, significant other, or friends think about your life choices? As a creative person this can be an issue, so we can talk about how we can tackle this.

Jenni and Marc discuss unrealistic expectations – not everyone is going to write a best selling book or win an Oscar – and how we impose our standards on other people’s expectations. There’s also impostor syndrome – have you ever felt like you don’t belong beside your peers? We talk about the types of impostor syndrome and how you can overcome these feelings to motivate yourself to achieve more.

It’s a deep old chat for us, as we delve deep into what we expect from our children, our families and ourselves and how these change as we grow, so join us as we unravel our brains just for you.

#18: Wellness for the Creative

Should you be striving for wellness as a creative? Despite the notorious anguished artist stereotype, we believe that you should look after yourself if you want to create amazing things. Looking after yourself and making time for the self care is a priority, and we talk about how you can start to do that.

We talk about what makes us feel good and how to integrate self care rituals into our everyday lives. Big shout out to Emma from Shine for her teaching and advice, which forms a big part of what we talk about.

We’re also caught up in the "back to school" vibe, so we set ourselves some goals – personal, work, podcasting and more - to get us to the end of the year.

We are all about the wellness this episode, appreciating and nurturing our bodies with l’eau mineral and pink Vimto.

#15: Improving Your Character Development

In this episode we explore character development by looking at one of our characters in more detail – the lovely Darvin. We explore some popular and less well known ways to capture a personality that you are writing about, while drinking prosecco and gradually becoming more random (and slightly slurred).

How can you approach character development? We look at techniques and tricks for getting an in depth feel for your character’s personality and background. This includes looking at things like online dating profiles, questionnaires, theme songs, family trees and loads more. Jenni and Marc chat about how all of these factors shape the character of our Darv and how it adds to the story.

This episode also includes...

  • We are now on so many channels/apps/listening thingies! Find us on Stitcher and Player.fm.
  • The effect of prosecco – once you pop you can’t stop.
  • Writing a book based in the 90s is filled with problems, mainly related to TV programmes, films and other cultural bits.
  • Jenni’s son has super sonic hearing (he interrupts at about 3.40 after hearing us mention Pringles)
  • Puss-filled piercings of the 90s, and how hip and happening we were
  • Jenni is writing a play with the lovely Mandy (of Mud and Marriage fame)
  • The advantages and pitfalls of writing journals, including Fearne Cotton's Happy journal
  • We rant about the Royal Wedding and how we should care about the love and not about what people are wearing. Also how Amal Clooney is way more important than her husband.
  • Marc has met POSH SPICE!
  • Can you read 200 books a year? We question how many books the lovely Greg Jenner reads, and how long they are. We are clearly just jealous.

#14: Interview with Esther Fairfax and Jenifer Klepfer

This podcast features a wonderful interview with Esther Fairfax and Jenifer Klepfer - Esther Fairfax is the daughter of Lotte Berk, the creator of the Lotte Berk Technique, also known as ‘slutty yoga’ (although we found out after we recorded this that Esther hates that term!). Esther wrote an autobiography about her mother and her upbringing, and Jenni talks to her and Jenifer about the writing process, what they are writing now, and generally how to approach the wonderful ‘mish mash’ that is life and enjoying it for what it is. Apologies for the sound quality in this one, Jen really has to learn about microphone placement!

Thanks for joining us on our journey so far, it’s been lovely having you with us. Since we’ve been podcasting, we have over 40,000 words in our book!

Not only is this episode cram packed with our (and yours, thank you to those that sent us suggestions) favourite bits, we also review how our Jan-Wri-Cha challenge went. Or is it Wri-Jan-Mo, Na-Wri-Ja-Mo…? Who cares…but yay for the great word count… it’s looking good, guys. It’s looking good!

Since we started podcasting, some wonderful things have happened. We improved our sound quality, we got lovely tweets from fellow authors and we wrote a blurb:
